  • Finally got my hands on the brand new 2019 CBR650R, really really surprised by how much I loved it. Would you buy one? I still think the MT07 is the best 650 but this is a VERY good option too.
    Smooth is fast and this felt just that, would you buy one? comment below....

    Nice review. I have been mainly a sport bike rider. Had two bikes over 20 years with each giving me around 10 years. Had a 92 Yamaha FZR600 from 1995-2004 & a 2003 Honda CBR600RR from 2004-2916.
    It is a great time to be a rider. So I got a little older and wanted something more comfortable for every day use. Settled on the Yamaha R3 which I love. It is regarded as a “beginner bike” but advanced riders can certainly own these bikes as they have decent power, are comfortable, have cheaper insurance and can use the saved loot on upgrades. People forget that the total cost of ownership can grow quickly. You’re not just buying the bike and paying insurance. You need gear and more than just a helmet and gloves. Plus you can do a lot of upgrades to improve the handling, power and safety of your bike.
    Even with all the power improving upgrades I’ve added to my 2015 Yamaha R3, it is still not a monster. Sure it can reach a out 115mph but it doesn’t gave the torque or acceleration you love that other bigger bikes have. It’s still got plenty though for commuting, carving and highway use.
    For now I am keeping the R3 but I do have an eye on an upgrade in the future. The new Ninja 400 looks brilliant and has rave reviews but it is an incremental jump over the R3. Same with the Ninja 400. So the two best bikes for upgrading back to a middleweight are the bikes you’re reviewing and mentioned. The P-Twin Yamaha MT-07 and Honda CBR650R.
    The MT07 is a standard bike and its O-Twin will have more torque but enough power for anything really. I love this bike. However, the CBR650R has really blended two bike segments perfectly. It has the sport bike look with full fairrings but is much more upright and comfortable than its brother CBR609RR, an R6 or ZX-6R. It’s Inline-4 will give you a lot of juice too. It is a really nice blend of a sport bike with standard bike. If I had the money, I’d love to own a Triumph Speed Triple or Ducati Supersport but I think when I upgrade, it’ll be the MT-07 or more likely the CBR650R. A lot of the points you made in the review have given the CBR650R the slight edge over the MT-07 in my shootout.
    I’ve always had sport bikes with full fairrings and clip-ons, and while the prospect of owning an open engine standard like the MT-07 is intriguing, the well balanced CBR650R seems just a little better all around though it is pricer. We’ll see, I guess.
    Thanks for the review!

      CBR650R is a very nice bike. Not boring atall, and nice to ride. I took one out for a test ride recently, but wasn't about to replace my CB650 F A, which is a bit older(2013), but still holds up well, in comparison.

    I'm riding 2 Ducati's here in Chiang Mai. I love the punch and the sound of them. They turn you into a Hooligan, yeah.
    But..... I'm sometimes missing the easy smooth rides of the CBR i owned previously. Also the fact that we don't have a Ducati Shop anymore in Chiang Mai. I seriously struggle to get my Ducati's serviced and not getting em back with even more or new problems. Sometimes i wish to get back the easy times i rode the CBR. No headaches.
    And right now i'm really considering to sell my old Ducati and get a CBR650R for my commutes. As much as i love my Ducati's, too much headaches. And the sad thing it's not the bikes fault. But hard to find mechanics doing the proper works a Ducati needs. I wish Ducati will return to Chiang Mai. Pleeeeease come back. 555

    In my country, between the Mt07 and the naked version of this, the price difference is $400.
    With that, you'd really have to wonder *WHY* anyone would buy an MT07, when for $400 more, you can get an INLINE FOUR compared to a twin.
    That's just talking about the engine alone, not even talking about the performance that Honda brings to the table.
    With that said, it's a pretty unfair comparison since the CB650 series pretty much outclasses all other 600-700 naked bikes, and it's in a league on it's own.
    The better comparison would be the Kawasaki, Suzuki, CFmoto and all other local / smaller brands that make TWINS.
    Again, for the price, and quality you get, the best deal is the Honda.

    I don’t think you can compare the MT-07 and the CBR 650 R as you do in this review. They are aside from fairly similar cc’s, two completely different bikes. The MT-07 is a cool little budget naked bike with a nice engine, but otherwise pretty crappy components. The CBR 650 R is a modern sports tourer with pretty much everything you would expect of a bike in this category. It has I nice sounding and very smooth inline four engine, beautiful styling, good wind protection all the electronic gizmos you would expect for a bike in this class, good suspension etc.
    I think you should know this as a serious bike reviewer. The "650 class" is twin cylinder ~650 cc bikes as the MT-07, ER-6 (Z/Ninja 650), SV-650 etc.

      @@genericallyaccepted 650r is pretty much the cbr650r without fairings.
      The difference is pretty much marginal, and aside from a few tweaks for it to be a more "naked" bike (like I think a more upright seating etc.).
      Engine is the same good inline four.

    Honda have a great line up of motorbikes whether it is a Honda Scoopy, Honda Wave , Monkey, CRF250L, Rebel 500 and the CRB650R Those would be my choices living in Thailand.
    The Honda 650 is built in Thailand so the bike doesn't have import tax on it and therefore you get more bike for your bucks compared to the bigger bikes.

    I did a test ride with the CBR650R several days ago. My current bike is the MT-09SP. I really enjoyed riding the CBR650R even though it was a very short test ride. The exterior design is very slick as well. The engine is very smooth and the transmission is also super smooth. Sufficient power to boot. However, as you said, the riding position is too much leaning-forward for my taste.

    • @epicrider7861
      @epicrider7861 5 лет назад

      @@SplittingHUNTER The MT-09 has more low to mid range torque than the CBR650R. But, practically speaking, on the pulbic roads, both engines are powerful enough. The CBR650R's 4 cylinder engine is silky smooth and very easy to manage its power delivery. The MT-09's 850cc 3-cylinder engine and the CBR's 650cc 4-cylinder engine are completely different in sound, power delivery and engine feel. Both are good.

    • @SplittingHUNTER
      @SplittingHUNTER 5 лет назад

      Epic Rider I haven’t ridden any of the bikes but some people complain that the mt/09 has A jerky throttle and uneven power relievers but they do enjoy the torque in the low-mid ranges. Sounds like it’s very streetable. The Honda May be down on power but if it’s smooth it should be very controllable.

    • @epicrider7861
      @epicrider7861 5 лет назад

      @@SplittingHUNTER I bought mine brand new about 6 months ago as the 2018 model. I use the A mode for the riding mode all the time. The throttle is just fine with me, as I can do the delicate throttle control. When people say the MT-09's throttle is jerky, I think their throttle control is rather rough. With bikes with this size of engine, the riders should be able to control the throttle by milimeter by milimeter increment. You can be rough with the throttle if the bikes have less than 400 cc engine. But, over that displacement, a delicate control of throttle is the required riding skill.

      @kevinmckeon2543 2 года назад

      @@danieljurisic1810 In terms of riding around town or at low to medium speeds in general, a good rider will make the cbr faster because they'll use the revs, but getting the power takes a little bit of work, the average rider (most) will probably go faster on the mt because of the ease of getting good torque. At highway speed, the CBR should dominate but again gear selection and getting the revs up is more important so the rider has to be more switched on, like an average rider would probably do a fast overtake quicker on the mt. Then going flat out top speed the CBR should pull away easy.

    first of all people should understand that 600 and 650 are two different categories. 600 is more track focused more powerful machines like CBR600RR, ZX6R, R6 etc. 650s are more of touring friendly/ street bikes like CBR650R, Ninja 650, Z650, CB650, Mt07 etc. please stop mixing these two classes. if you want a track machine, if comfort is not your concern, if you are ready to pay a bit extra, go for a 600cc bike. if you want a touring machine or street bike with comfort and good gas mileage go for 650cc bikes.
    edit: This is only for Japanese manufactures. Brands like Triumph has track bikes in 650 segment as well like Daytona 675

    The CBR650R (or even the CB650R) has waaay better styling, more power, better suspension and traction control. Compared with the MT-07 I would say the CBR650R is better and I own an MT-07. I haven’t ridden one though so I can’t talk from experience. Do you actually think that the MT-07 torque alone makes it better than the CBR even with all those other factors?

    • @AndreasBrOlesen
      @AndreasBrOlesen 5 лет назад +3

      TheJaisah Agree with you. The CBR 650, even with comparable cc’s, is in another class of bikes than the mt07. The mt07 is a budget bike with a nice torquey engine but otherwise crappy components, the CBR 650 R is much more grown up. Not much "budget bike" about it. It has everything you expect for a modern sportstourer, nice suspension, the electronic gizmos (tc, quickshifter etc.) and really beautiful styling.

    Totally agree that the CBR650R (and CB650R) is well adequate for riding on the roads and track days in Thailand where I live.
    The CBR650R is about 324,000 bt and the ( Fireblade )CBR1000 is 850,000 bt in Thailand because the CBR650 is manufactured in Thailand and the Firebalde is manufactured and imported from Japan so subject to massive import tax.
    That CBR650R is best in red.
    Be honest, the Honda CBR has more class and is more sophisticated than the boy racer MT07

      It has increased horsepower from the 650f, but it also has a double intake. The timing and intake capabilities have been improved, as well as dropped 6 kilos. Because of this, it should be slightly more fuel efficient which mitigates the effect of the smaller tank.
