its just interesting how Zhongli's ascension stat is geo dmg and his weapon gives atk%, he was definitely made to be a support but they made some interesting decisions regarding his ascension stat and signature weapon
It's called _"being utterly clueless"._
He was released as useless Pixel Status pick and got useful after All the buffs done.
I mean, They couldn't do HP% on top of everything else and shield strength as a ascension stat would be broken. So I feel like it's a good middle ground because it incentivizes you upgrading his burst for some extra damage on top of the petrification stuff. Idk

I support this argument.
If you pay attention to his trailer, he can break his petrified enemies using his Skill. Which got nerfed and turned his skill only capable of breaking rock shields.
His skill got nerfed so hard you can actually use that elemental detection thingy on a petrified enemy and see that it's now turned into a Geo object. Zhongli's skill supposedly breaks all Geo objects such as Rock Shields by Hilichurls and Ores but somehow petrified enemies that's actually detected as a Geo object are unaffected by his skill.
If zhongli was never bad then they wouldn't have changed him based on the near unanimous back lash 99% of everyone shared.
the problem is that there are only 2 possibilities, mihoyo doesn't understand their own game or is forced to follow the player's will even though they have to change the gameplay they want to make..
and both are bad signs for the game..
@@caesart9264nah they did have a idea on how to use Zhongli in beta as a DPS+support, they just nerfed him too hard upon release and decided he was gonna be a support.
That vid didn't mention that the debuff was a part of his kit in cbt, after using his burst it was suppose to give a 20% physical and geo res shred while the enemies are petrified, they gave him back the debuff and made it even better to work on all elements and attached to his shield instead.
Nah you're still wrong. Zhongli's kit is all over the damn place to the point he fails to do every role possible, even Diona was better than him for floor 12 because her shield can not be interrupted, and cryo shields were 100% more useful than having a Geo shield since Geo enemies might as well be non existent in the abyss.
What are you talking about? I thought they literally showed that they changed geo shields to resist all elements, unlike other types like cryo. (Or I might be making that up can't be bothered to check the vid, but either way it says it right in his kit that he has all res shield buff by like 150%) But for the record I generally don't disagree, for someone who proudly spouts that he hasnt played in nine months teccy sure has a lot of takes about the game 🙄

Even to this very day there's just as good , if not better options than him in most teams where he can be slotted in. This character has singlehandedly rotted people's brains into believing no other characters can possibly compete with him for his job, but that's simply not true whatsoever.

Zhongli absolutely needed the buffs. Even his shielding abilities, what he's INTENDED FOR, were DOGSHIT at C0 with an R1 weapon. And Geo being a dogshit element at the time(worse than pre-Dendro Electro, can you believe it? lmfao) did not help at all. Both the buffs to Geo and the buffs to Zhongli himself were necessary to make Zhongli the best tank and shielder in the game. Otherwise him being slightly better than a C3 Noelle at shielding just wouldn't make him worth pulling for.
I would say literally every buff except for normal attack HP scaling was needed. Without additional pillar spawn from hold E he would create weird ass rotations and waste time + hard to get Tenacity proc in the future. Without additional universal resistance shred he would be too easily powercrept by any other shielding unit, since defensive characters need some party utility or they will be outclassed by future releases (literally every healer/shielder has more to them than just surviving).
Electro was never even bad . People live in this weird ass delusional world where electro was somehow one of the worst elements in the game when that has always been geo and cryo. (And no freeze alone does not make cryo a good element)
Agree, but they went overboard, he is still to this day the most fit all broken character in the game, even Kazuha and Nahida have their limits (you can't slot them in a geo team for example) Zhongli doesn't even have that you can legitimately put him in every team, and it works perfectly, the fact that he is geo just makes it better for him as he doesn't ruin any elemental reactions.

@@tribopowerhe does ruin reactions lmao, his pillar can consume the element applied to an enemy, u can put it away from the fight but if you do that then he generates 0 energy, and no, you can't slot him in every team, hell he ain't even used in the best teams in the game aside from HT vape, literally all the other top meta teams that have the highest abyss usage according to akashadata namely, Freeze, raiden/childe international, and Alhaitham spread, hyperbloom, Nilou Superbloom. Out of all the top teams in the game, zl is only used in 1 lmao.

Lets do some Pre-buff Zhongli number crunching.
Lv90 HP: 14695
lv10 Shield: 23.04% HP + 2711 shield
Black Tassel 46.92% HP + 4780 HP flower + 20% HP substat + 3 46.6% HP Main stat: 206.72% HP + 4780 HP
25% Shield strength passive
Total effective shield: (14695 * 3.0672 + 4780) * .2304 + 2711.51 = 14,388 Shield
After 25% shield strength passive: 17,985 shield
With Fav Lance : 15,964 Shield
Post Buff shield would be: 25,179 Shield
Post Buff Fav lance shield: 22,349 Shield
18k shield sounds great right? Prebuff you can get knocked out of casting shield, and no pillar spawn. This means you can waste time or even die trying to put up a shield. Enegy is very important to make a team effective. Prebuff means you have 0 particle generating unless you have favonius lance.
Now lets look at Diona.
lv90 HP: 9570
lv12 shield: 14.4% HP + 1772.58 HP
Recruse Bow 46.92% HP + 4780 HP flower + 20% HP substat + 3 46.6% HP Main stat: 206.72% HP + 4780 HP
75% shield strength with Hold E + 15% shield strength on C2: 90% shield strength
Total effective shield: (9570 * 3.0672 + 4780) * .144 + 1772.58 = 6,041 Shield
After 90% Shield strength: 12,706 Shield
With Fav/sac: 11,478 Shield
The difference would have been 5.2k with HP weapon and 4.5k with Fav weapon. Thats about 1-3 hits depending on the type of attack from elite mobs. With a healing ult on diona, you will heal for about 4.5k x6 at lv12. What you have now is a 11.5k shield + 27k Healing + Energy particle generation + fav generation + 200 em buff at c6 against a 18k shield with 0 particle generation or 16k shield with fav particle generation. ZL shield itself is fine but he completely lacked everything else, like qiqi with the highest healing but provides absolutely nothing else. Qiqi had more healing than ZL had shield and both couldnt generate particles so if qiqi is terrible, ZL was worse in terms of damage recovered/prevented. Post buff ZL now gets to summon his pillar as well so there is at least a chance to get particles, a stronger shield, and 20% res shred.
Yall dont realize how bad Zhongli actually was. Even with 3x hp%, his shield was a little bit better than Diona's shield. He had nothing else useful in his kit at all.
Even to this day he barely has anything useful. 20% shred ain't shit when you could just switch him for someone who does off field damage and just get more overall dps. People will use the argument of "he removes the need to dodge" so does every other shield in the game. It isn't some exclusive trait to Zhongli. Even in mono geo Itto, Zhongli is the *flex* slot character , meaning he's an option for it, but not the absolute best one either.
Everyone does, its only tectone and other dense people that think he didn't need a buff, and despite what the above moron says he is still insanly good even now, the res shred and overly strong shield and massively powerful burst makes him still at the top of support.
I like Tec, but you can clearly see his pride talking in this one. Zhongli wasn't fine, never was.

Respect the dude and love his nonstop shenanigans, but Teccy is like allergic to conformity. Even when it’s in his best interest to just nod his head and let be what will… zhongli had problems at his launch. He needed some re-evaluation and a clearer design role. I don’t think they needed to go as far as buff the entirety of Geo just to accommodate its elemental god, but some of those Kit and scaling changes definitely need to happen.
i still think zhongli is weak,(cus he is not a dps) his attacks and burst can deal damage but then u can't support that much and zhongli is still not gonna be your dps so you gonna fall off.
i like the fact that i just put on 3 hp% and press E no problem +his res and damage support with the right arrifact is realy nice but bennett still gives a better boos while with 3 hp% he also can heal the entire team.
and those people who build zhongli for damage weird me out

Also both of us know that in abyss you use zhongli in every floor,and even if you don't the majority of the playerbase do cause his support capabilities are insane

To be fair back in 1.1 the need for shields wasn't as apparent as it is now. Enemies got 1 shot and didnt have much depth with their mechanics.

@@softjytsu still wasn't as hard as floor 9+ of the spiral abyss, back then most players were running purple artifacts with characters that were between lvl 60-70, there was a much bigger desperate need for damage than survivability back then so most players felt that Zhongli held their progress back.
But back then players thought bennett was the worst healer and xingqiu was mid at best.
It was a different time.

Thank you for the video. First time I had a semi decent watch without crying. One of my Huskies just died. We still have the father and the daughter but after her loss the entire family has been depressed. I try to keep the other two happy but I can’t stop crying. One second she was fine and then suddenly she had a heart attack outside. It was so sudden.
Yep, that entire buff trivialized the game so much, they had to make mobs and mechanics that ignore or take advantage of shields while at the same time leaving in the dust the healers.
It was after those buffs that people began trashing on the healer class in general. Until of course Rifthounds.
It completely broke the Game’s balance, I agree. That was the beginning of things to come.

The balancing of Zhongli is that he does no dmg
Healers were bad from the start. People don’t mainly use shields to block damage, they use it to avoid stagger which heals do not do. Did we forget that Venti was the first to break the game’s balance? What about Xiangling? Bennett? Xingqiu? The games balance was already broken since the beginning lol anti-shield enemies were inevitable. To say they made them to counter Zhongli is stupid.

People use shields absolutely to avoid damage since there are many who can’t even dodge or don’t want to dodge. Stagger is, in the minds of most players, an afterthought.
And the amount of teams without shield characters proves it.
Venti didn’t broke the game because his burst is something that works or doesn’t depending on the mobs’ size. Hence why he quickly faded away from Meta as soon as heavier foes appeared in Abyss.
Xiangling is nothing without Xingqiu and Bennett and back in those days many people thought she was trash.
Xingqiu and Bennett do not break the game either because they’re as good as the Main DPS allows them to be, since they’re applicators and buffers respectively.
Xingqiu does not make Amber OP. Bennett does not make Qiqi OP. So, no. They do not break the balance of the game.
Zhongli did as it directly made every fight regardless of mob a walk in the park.

Back at launch noone considered Xiangling trash. They considered her amazing, the difference is people used her for physical damage instead of fire.
Bennet also broke the game just by how strong his healing + attack buff was. Xingqiu didnt, but he was still incredibly strong with stupid high off-field damage output.
I dont know why you are telling that other person they are capping, lol. Zhongli wasnt the first character to have a shield. Noelle's shield also made damage avoidance easymode. Its just that few people used her since she was only really usable as carry. Zhongli only made ''every fight a walk in the park'' if the player had his C6. Otherwise it was still weaker then Bennets healing that also gave a massive buff. It was also completely useless on my Noelle since she already had her own shield.

Tectone was wrong about Zhongli, just imagine pre-buff Zhongli agaisnt the consecrated beasts in floor 12, it would be a struggle to even get his shield up since he could get interrupted, once he had the shield that shit would barely take two taps cause of lower hp scaling.
Also at launch Diona was arguably a better shielder back then the Abyss floor 12 had only cryo enemies, so its not even like you didnt have another option. My man just can't take this L.
You know what, when the drama was happening i was busy pulling for him and got him in the hard pity last day last pull not even kidding, still have the screen recording on my phone, it was worth it.
Tectones takes are often funny but he was just wrong. Zhongli was legit qiqi level on release. Almost non existent particle gen, u had to choose between shield or pillar. His shield was as strong as 4 star shields like diona and weaker than layla or thoma. His ult did no dmg (still doesnt). He basically was useless in every way u look at it.

and people thought his buffs made him so overpowered when people here and there are excluding him from team comps in certain situations

And the abyss is filled with cryo back then so that made Diona way stronger than him.
He had a c6 Zhongli so he couldn’t know from experience how bad c0 Zhongli was

The 1.1 update was funny in general. Remember when people kept burning themselves in the grass because burning grass was supposed to scale with Adventurer Rank? I remember seeing multiple Reddit posts about how Pyro characters were a liability now because they kept killing themselves with fire.
Haha, I remember that. To this day I still think its silly how much people complained about that, and afterwards fire damage from burning grass became basically zero.
my friend had a cracked zhongli prior to his buffs and then with out any work he logged back in and noticed his damaged tripled. will Dehya ever receive such blessings

I'm still happy that I decided to get Zhongli during his first release whether he's good or not. Cuz at the end of the day, lots of veteran gamers already know that characters who receives big amounts of complaints have high chances of getting buffs. Which is a common scenario to lots of games. Hopefully, this common knowledge will reach those who are not yet enlightened by this fact. Anyways, the Genshin community did great! If we get enough drama, HoYoverse will definitely buff certain characters who deserve to get buffs 🌟

I think they're just afraid of the game failing badly because of how OVERWHELMING the backlash is and in such early launch too.

4:02 Also during the Demo there's this misconception about using his Hold E against Petrified Enemies by his Meteor kinda treats enemies as how he shred Geo Shields with the Hold E. I think that also add about the point of false advertisement.
I dont know why Tectone is still holding the stance that Zhongli was "good" on release. He was not good at all, he was "okay" but not "good". He probably forgot that his shield did not block anything but Geo element. So if he was struck by physical or any element but geo the shield he provided was not sturdy enough even if he was properly built. His dmg was also pretty below standard (even now with the buffs his dmg isnt so good).
But i guess that's tectone's hill that he will dai on.

i still can't fathom how anyone would take teccy seriously. His takes never mattered coming from someone who thinks on how much he can spend than actually learn the game mechanics. His opinion holds no weight especially for f2p since he never had any experience being one and only knows the game from c6r5 perspective. He whaled on genshin and has never tried playing as an average player with no resin refreshes or C6R5's yet talks like he knows it all.
When he said just add triple HP artifacts to ZL and staff of homa, that doesn't mean anyone would have one, or that if he is in triple HP and all he does is shield(even with homa), is he really worth that slot as an f2p. What this movement was for is so mihoyo won't intentionally make shit 5 stars in the future(ahem dehya) because if on 2020 we already have a shit archon what's going to happen in the future. Also Diona can shield, battery and heal and she's a 4 star.

@@grimmyboy161 Zhongli shield was very weak at release and so was the rest of his kit. Thats not up to debate. You either didnt play him then, dont remember, or only saw him at C6 like Tectone's Zhongli, which massively buffed his shielding and energy gain.

But pre-buff he barely dealt any damage to be forced as a dps, has no res shred so he has no way to help the team deal more dmg; and the one thing he has to offer which was to shield he was not even half good at for such 5 star rarity.

Before the buffs and after I enjoyed him either way. He seemed pretty op to me, he helped me with hard content when I lacked dps( and still does after 3 years). My artifacts are pretty crap too but my team feels pretty much invincible on top of complete cc immunity. Either of those things alone are crazy op... so ya imma have to go with Tectone on this

i still say inital release zhongli needed something, both from the prespective that some chars need buffs, and zhongli only had tank going for him. like diona and xinyan when you build for there shield support rivals them(yes xinyans shield does get that tanky) with attribute and uptime differences with both of these being 4 stars. diona is also a healer and provides other support aspects like 200 EM on C6 that is reasonable to obtain compared to multiple cons of a 5 star. its effectivly the C2/C6 zhongli that does make him feel like the tank archon

I was back then (kinda wild that it's been 3 years) and one thing that tectone always overlooks is that his zhongli was c6 with max ref staff of holma, so ofc his zhongli was beyond broken, but for the vast majority of f2p he had a lot of issues, but his buffs were overboard, and we must admit it (this comes from someone who plays since the beginning and has a c0 Zhongli).

Geo+Pyro= i dont know what to call it but basically it spawns something like a dendro core, if you hit it with a pyro attack after, it explodes, if you hit it with a geo attack it splinters out and creates a damaging area that does damage based on percentage of the damage your attack did on the core
Geo+Hydro=Crystallize:but buff it to where it gives a shield based on defense or it heals based on you total hp
Geo+Electro=Thunderstruck:Kinda like Vap or Melt
Geo+Anemo=Splintered: DOT
Geo+Dendro=Rooted:Life drain+heal over time
Geo+Cryo=Shattered:defense shred

The only buffs alot of people asked for was for his energy regeneration to be consistent and his held E to be uninterruptible. The shred and overscaling shield with HP was really unnecessary. He's the only character in the game that could petrify giant hillichurl sized enemies and they topped it off with a shred and an almost invincible shield, making other shield type characters feel like they're trying to reach Zhongli's shield, even til inazuma. Venti was the first but THIS was where brain-dead gameplay was amplified to new heights.

some people here are saying that his shield was worse than diona, but i actually saw some people calculate the numbers back then, and his shield actually has higher numbers+no downtime. it was just that floor 12 used to have cryo enemies, thus makes diona's shield better+she can also heal and generate a lot of particles.
my take is: geo also needed the buff to be on par with other element. personally i think he needed the interruption resistance and more scalings on his pillar dmg, the pillar on hold E was also a nice touch.
edit: i just realized diona also doesnt have interruption resistance. i might have to rethink that about him NEEDING the resistance, but its really nice to have it and definitely improves the experience, especially in chaotic combats.
tldr: i wanted a buff too, but his shield wasnt that bad according some people who spent time to calculate
i know ur comment is old but dionas shield was better than zhongli. This wasnt because abyss had cryo enemies, it was because his shield was only 250% against geo, while dionas was 250% against cryo and on hold e, additional 75% bonus to everything. makes dionas shield inherently better.

I am playing a game-. I see Tectone thumbnails with some news or drama and try to guess if it's a new video or sth from years ago. I didn't think Zhongli news/drama would be sth from 7hours ago... more like 7 years.
- his hold E didn't summon a pillar, that means his energy generation is basically non-existent unless you do a non-optimal and weird rotation to include his tap E
- his hold E also didn't have interruption resistance when casting, kinda making him a bit uncomfortable to use in situations where he's supposed to make comfortable
- Geo shield back then didn't have 150% damage absorption to all damage, which is similar to Not having Xingqiu sword aura (which nowadays is very significant with all the really aggressive enemies hoyo are adding)
- his shield also didn't provide any buff/debuff, when diona shields grants decreased stamina consumption and increased movement speed (which basically makes him weaker than a lot of 4 star supports back then)
- even with geo buffs, geo is considered to be the weakest element rn
i'm glad he got "balanced" as other people like to call it, otherwise he would be so much weaker compared to other 'supports' nowadays. Though i wish we didn't have to resort to harsh measures for our voices to be heard by hoyo.

58K HP Zhong shields were still getting ripped apart by the consecrated beasts last abyss so idk what you're going on about. If it's for overworld content even a Thoma/Layla/Diona shield is thick enough. Lmao

i think he (or rather geo) did need a buff, but i found it baffling how people were confused on his role...is what id like to say until i realized his ascension stat and signature weapon did not help with this at all.

What's so funny is that a decade old game is still being played today, and it's main life-support is the modding community; Skyrim. I know it's an RPG game and not a gacha, but if Genshin allowed mods like Skyrim - it would maybe beat out any games in player base in both active and loyal players.

1.1 Zhongli was pretty bad tbh, no knock back resistance during that long ass shield animation means you can literally get interrupted before pulling out your shield, and geo resonance was so bad back then(it still is). and his shield only takes 250% geo damage, and no 20 percent resistance shred, I would really prefer diona over Zhongli back then, since he had almost zero utility besides a shield
