One thing I'll never understand about Genshin is why they main characters barely show up in the game. Even in their own story quests, the majority of time is spent on random npcs you don't care about at all.
What's also dumb is how they also completely disappear from the world instead of just hanging out. Like, why can't Ningguang be in her own palace, why can't Barbara and Jean be in Mondstadt. If you could actually interact with characters, it'd make the game feel a lot more alive

It truly is a mystery. I can't even properly theorize about it. Like there's no real reason to do things this way, is there? I can't even make an assumption. It just makes no sense.
Star Rail is doing much better in this regard. For starters, we get a core cast of characters that we can get to know better over time. That's going to be a nice addition to the journey. But then all of the previous characters continue existing in the world, and then you get the companion side quests that even let them visit you on the train. Oh, and there's the random daily interactions via text messaging. Minor, but neat.
I'm low key excited to get all the Xianzhou characters on the train, lol. It'd be so cool to have Jing Yuan - general of the army - casually checking out your digs.
But something that's bothering me on that front is they didn't do all of the characters, for some reason. I think right now we're missing Seele, Bronya, and Herta. Hope they fix that at some point.

I agree but I believe you can "show AND tell". Most media (specifically movies, TV shows, Games, and Visual Novels/Manga/comic books) do exactly this all the time. The problem with Genshin is that they will TELL you something in the most long drawn out uninteresting way possible sometimes like reading a dictionary (and thats assuming the info given is actually important and not some random npc quest☠️).
You can tell things but need to undercut with visuals or at least have very good character dynamic and dialog. The black screen shit is atrocious. That could have been voice acted or just cut entirely if it felt like it would just repeat something you already know.

I think the issue with genshin impact is that while the story itself is progressing, your personal growth of your account and characters has long hit a ceiling. You don't feel like you need to become stronger for the next boss fight or threat so how do you build suspense in the story? You see a powerful looking new boss and you know you'll breeze through it with your roster of 20 maxed out fully farmed characters. I feel like genshin is the perfect example of "A game that was never meant to be as big as it was" because the amount of flaws the core game has is kind of insane because it trys to combine to game into one, specifically open world rpgs and gacha mechanics and at face value it does a semi excellent job at first but once you start actually progressing and leveling up charcaters and you start reaching the point where nothing truly new gets added thats when the problems start showing themselves.

The devs *intend* to make the content appealing to newer players and wider audiences, and not entertain older players. Isn't it obvious the game is "big" as it targets newer audiences?
And gacha mechanics? The main catch in gacha games is to slowly add content over time for profits. At face value it is obvious to me to expect "flaws" of running out of content once you progress - they add content OVER time

When he said "show don't tell" I almost jumped out of my bed cheering cuz THANK YOU FINALLY SOMEONE ELSE GETS IT.
Like honestly I personally don't mind the extended ass stories. I feel like I'm playing an anime sometimes. But what really breaks that feeling is when I have like 5-10 minutes of dialogue and then that stupid fade to black where they just HAVE A BLACK BACKGROUND WITH WHITE TEXT DESCRIBING WHAT THE CHARACTER(S) IS SEEING!!
And we have examples in game where they have done Show dont Tell so so effing well. Like how you mentioned the scene after Traveller leaves the encounter with Shogun and there's the visual and gameplay effect that shows the Traveller feeling disoriented (and even Paimon's dialogue aids in this as she shows genuine concern for Traveller). There was also a few scenes in the recent Archipelago with Kazuha's story/island that I also felt really told the story thru dialogue *and* gameplay. I feel like both these approaches become so underutilized nowadays for some reason.
But then in some of the Sumeru quests which to me arguably had some of the strongest actual lore backing with the whole Dharian/Khaenriah thing going on I feel like we could've had so many more Show don't Tell moments. There were so many moments where instead of it cutting to black and giving us text about the shared flashbacks of 500 yrs ago where they could've showed us in either a cutscene, some limited gameplay or even animated 2D scenes..
I feel like when they utilize Show don't Tell so so f*cking well but they just don't do it enough!
And he is so right with the events being related to the lore. Not only is this is an issue with Albedo and the Dragonspine event, but anyone who wasn't around for the really early game not only missed Scaramouche's intro but also that huge lore bit within that event intro about the "stars and skies" being a lie. Only reason I know about that is because of people like Ashikaii. I also feel like people who missed out on the original archipelago (which I thankfully started playing in time to enjoy) missed out on a signature weapon for Klee but also on a part of the lore for the next year's archipelago event. And it makes me wonder if they do another one this summer if newer players will find themselves lost or confused with the return of this beloved event since they never got to experience the time-gated stories of the past 2 years.

Genshin if you want to get through the quests it literally feels like you're clocking in to a second shift at work every day. It's painful and it's so sad that such a fun game is ruined by chore after chore after chore. Like where tf are the combat quests in this stupid game? You get one boss fight at the end of an Archon quest typically and that's like... it. Then it's back to the mines.

Instead they make you run pointless errands for 4-5 hours at a time before you can even get to some of the worthwhile stories and even then they're packed with unnecessary dialogue and told in drawn out and mind numbing ways even if the story itself could be pretty good.

In Sumeru Aether/Lumine were also starting to get fed up with all the bs you just mentioned. No one really wants to help them find their sibling or seems to care, everyone is really self-centered and always asks for help and can't seem to fix their own problems by themselves. I remember some dialogue options you could pick that showed how annoyed they were and didn't want to help anymore. Nahida is the only character that actually tried to help the sibling on their quest so far. For Honkai Star Rail (I think it was a tweet from a developer or something. I found this out by someone commenting about it on another video i checked out a while ago) It was confirmed Aether/Lumine crashed into the star rail express after they finished their journey on teyvat and in the express you can find a wind glider in the ship which they decided to leave there. This next thing I'm going to say is just a guess on my part is but (and this might be a bit of a stretch), why would they not care about the wind glider and decide to give it away? Why did they not want to keep it? and I think they did it because they actually hate teyvat for trapping them and forcing them to help solve all their problems... I mean how would you feel if that happened to you? No one asking you how if you are ok and try to help you find your sibling. Loosing your ability to freely travel to whatever world you wanted. So even though the wind glider was a gift and something they could keep to remember teyvat and the 'friends' they made there. I think they probably didn't want to keep the wind glider because of what they went through... and thats why they just gave it away so casually. They want to forget teyvat and i doubt they would go back there again. if they kept the wind glider it would be something that will always make them remember all the bs they had to go through, when all they wanted to do was reunite with their sibling and do what they have been doing for god knows how long. I will stop here, this is just something random i thought of and wanted to share somewhere

And there were very long moments when I questioned why I was even playing. My fondest moments are still from when I was new to the game.

And they will do it for me. Gonna make it a family tradition.
Crazy how I don't agree with you on pretty much everything else, fighting in genshin is terrible, story is good (other than almost every quest adding to the pile of questions I have, solving none in the process), worst part is inazuma (ending sure is good, but how we got to that ending - it absolutely doesn't make any sense). Shit pacing permeates everything in Genshin Impact, from the dialogue (Paimon), to the story (filler), to the combat (a button-mashing slog without the stats, which is not something a whale or min-max artifact grinder would notice), to the exploration (the constant loading time when switching to an element that isn't in the party, but need to use to interact with something in the world, then switch back), to the pull income (anniversary, 'nuff said).

Honestly, i do agree with nearly everything he said.
    - Black screens should be considered Crime against Story telling.
    - You can skip 80% of dialog and still understand everything.
    - Aranara quest was Hideous. Did they really hoped me to read all that Alien language? C mon
    - Most Main story quests suffer from pacing.
    - Character Stories are SUPER Boring. You have lawyer, Tax officer, Dude who talks with rocks, Alchemy, Yae started good, later you find out you got on Writing competition or whatever, Eula has tragic story, but your quest is how to learn to dance.
    - Story based on characters always gonna end up like this, where they HAVE to shoehorn in some 5 star characters into the story. Honkai impact did it better since it's character based on story, not story based on characters.
    My Personal issues:
    - Combat is NOT that great when you think about it. All it does, it's focusing to much on elemental reactions. Which means, as long as you have certain elements, you see big numbers. I WANT FLASHY ULTIMATES. God coming down from the sky, Raiden raiding a dragon or some sh*t. When Raiden Shogun Boss came out, i thought "YES, finally we'll get a character which ACTUALLY FEELS LIKE 5 STAR" nah, all you get is tazer on a fishing stick. Crazily enough, That would be totally in Honkai impact 3rd, and it's like 5 year old, and they have Raiden Mei which rides a Dragon. Honkai Star rail have that, Why Genshin can't? On the same note, Ults with animations sucks. It's cool first 5 times, then... That's why Rosalya is one of the best characters in the game.
Nearly none of the characters FEELS like 5 star. Newest character? Awful he does absolutely nothing.
    - Abyss is a dogsh*t I dont see how people can have fun with that. EVERYTHING is made just to waste your time. Is it hard? NO. Is there incentive to achieve best team for that fight? NO. Since you have to go through same 2 chambers again to to get to 3rd for whatever reason. WHY? It's baffling how that never got reworked. While Honkai impact Abyss got reworked like 10 times. And it is, more fun.
    - Why limit Serenita pot building? WHY? Let people go crazy at it, let them build whatever they want ffs
+ What this game does VERY WELL is Exploration. That's the main reason i still play it. And sometimes comes out character i like design of. i have 30k gems as a f2p still waiting for next character i'll like. I just like run around, get some farming, visit a pot or something. about the gameplay there's something that i don't like in this game, because so far there's only the traveler that has an performance update on it's character (different element) while the other character stay same as you first met, so if the character is shit they stay shit, there's no alternate version like in other game, to add it worse there's almost no buff nor skill fixing on this game except zhongli lol
Tbh it's not really that problematic IF the character itself never appear again in the story, but in fact they're still relevant and marketed until now, what the point of game as service if the character itself never get an update? and why barbara and fischl still looks like that when canonically we already 3 years in teyvat, did they even get older?
and another thing is skin, for the company that has the best revenue out of mobile game, releasing 4 skins a year is horrendous (i'm not consider censorship as skin) , i don't think lack of resources and time is an excuse anymore
