Vinnie always talks with knowledge and wisdom. I wish drum clinics were as popular today as back in the day. Such a shame they seem to be dying out as so much knowledge to be learned from the experience. The music industry today is lacking in so many areas that real musicians can't make a living. DC

David Curtis agree! But in the case of Vinnie he’s not interested in doing clinics any more I think, he doesnt want to do them. I think he changed a lot since those days 1988-1989 where he did those incredible clinics for Zildjian.

Totally agree: those musicians like Vinnie came up at a time when you learnt your craft by playing with the best musicians in a healthy atmosphere and gaining your knowledge through this, sadly lacking in the music industry today.

@@Jeroenvrolijk yes I haven’t heard of him doing any in recent years; up to a couple years ago he was busy gigging w Herbie Hancock so his gig schedule was full

You are right but the good thing here is at least to me all of Vinnie’s old clinics right here on youtube sum up pretty much anything you will ever need to know about drumming! He explains so well and in depth and plays stuff no one else can touch so it is all a win to me! I always thought if I ever got recognition and did a clinic I could get up there and just say everything Vinnie already said and played at his clinics, thanks for coming and good night lol!

You could spend the rest of your entire life learning about a tiny part of Vinnie’s playing alone and yes the clinics back then were part of a different time. I attended Drumtech in London 1993 and had the privilege of attending a Dennis Chambers clinic there

Thank you Vinnie!!!! I have been saying this for the longest. Best way to play the drums is to practice on the instrument. Well said, Vinnie!!

Playing drums is always my first choice, but not always one of my options. Often it's quieter practice or none at all!
But as all surfaces require a different touch, like he said, practicing on different things like pillows and drum pads can help develop the touch needed to work with a variety of instruments. I think it is most useful to maintain the same goals when drumming on anything - mainly staying relaxed, having a groove in mind, and going for a good sound. Hopefully the things that help me get good results from drumming on a couch cushion or on my knee will be relevant when I can get back on the drums themselves....

I believe practicing on a pillow is useful when you're just starting out and you need to get used to arm, wrist, and finger mechanics, maybe when you don't have a drumset yet. But that's it. Is not a type of practice you want to hold on to for too long if your goal is to get deeper into understanding the instrument.

Drums and cymbals have so much more sound nuances and facettes to offer than a pillow not to speak of their different rebound. Mostly you will play with too much pressure on drums and cymbals after extended pillow sessions because a pillow has no rebound and you always have to use your muscles to keep stix moving. Stixs can do a lot by themselves literally written. You never can rebound enough depending on the music you're playing. You should know the fine interplay of muscle action and rebound. A pillow just only trains one aspect of both, which isn't bad but is not all of the game to play drums. It's not even half of it.

And every drum is different, and so is every drum set. Ever sit down on a kit in someone's basement to find the heads play like they are underwater? Ever sit down on a kit whose dented, filthy heads haven't been changed in years? Ever play on cymbals that you just simply can't play? I want to practice on MY instrument and play on MY instrument. Man, drums are the hardest fffing things to play...pillows are for sleep.

I hope no one actually thinks that practising on a pillow equals practising on a kit. Of course not. BUT on a pillow it's about power and mostly technique (=control). When you gotta lift the stick up from the pillow it gives you the control of the movement instead of a rebound f.e. And of course, it's absolutely necessary to master reboud but it's also important to not to be slave to it.

    Practice on the instrument.
But it's ALSO good to train for better muscles and endurance. Let's call that exercise
