I don't think it's possible for me to be selfish even if I wanted to be. Other people's pain and animals' pain always weighs me down anyway. It's not because I'm better than anyone else, it's just how my mind works. I can't be happy here. I can only distract myself sometimes.

I LOVE the black screen, it inspired me. You are right. We got to focus on ourselves. We came here alone , we leave alone. If you can not put time in for yourself to realize you are really by yourself you will always be afraid of detachment. People are planning to be around groups of people for their future. I planning to be by myself, that’s self mastery!!👩🏽‍🦱

I don't think anything guarantees happiness, suffering is unavoidable regardless, but I would more or less argue the opposite. All other factors being considered I think that compassionate people are happier. One argument I could make is that when you think about or contemplate the happiness/suffering of other people you're projecting your own happiness/suffering on to them so the double-think required to hold conflicting attitudes about something (i.e. your happiness/suffering is ultimately good/bad but the happiness/suffering of at least some other people is either ultimately bad/good or neutral) creates a natural dissonance that makes it impossible to make sense of reality (when I say that anyone else's happiness is inherently good I'm affirming the value of my own happiness since it's the same thing. Because we experience happiness and suffering as inherently good and bad I think the same dissonance is implied if we deny that our own happiness and pain is always ultimately good and bad or if we claim that something other than happiness/suffering matters intrinsically). I think we're naturally moral/philosophical schizophrenics since we hold conflicting beliefs and values all the time and think nothing of it. Another argument is that as social animals a sense of being connected to others is pleasurable but I'm less interested in an argument that's rooted in how we just so happen to be wired (by natural selection) than an eternal, universal/logical truth that applies to every possible world. I don't think some of what you describe as selfishness qualifies (like needing the validation of other people which everyone, or at the _very least_ every psychologically normal person, must to some degree).
I can see how not being bothered by the suffering of other people can make your life much easier but I think distance also explains why some basically or relatively compassionate people don't ruminate over all the problems in the world (a lot of people don't spend much time thinking about how bad their own futures will be because of that 'distance' either). It's hard for me to imagine being completely happy and at peace and not caring at all about the happiness/suffering of others or even wanting them to suffer, being relatively insensitive is something else (not fundamentally or morally but in terms of how easily I can imagine being happy despite it). It's even harder for me to imagine someone in a perfect state of happiness being aggressive than their just being selfish (there may very well be people who want to torture or bully people just for fun but without anger or fear or the capacity to be emotionally threatened by others I can't understand why you would ever want to hurt someone). The greatest happiness I've ever felt was when I felt at peace with the whole world (when I didn't have to interact with them, obviously). Don't misunderstand me, I don't like or have any great compassion or sympathy for all people all of the time but I naturally don't like 'conflict' (if I could end my worst enemy's suffering by snapping my fingers I would but I'm not really invested in their well-being, it's just the reasonable thing to do and requires no sacrifice on my part. I don't want to explain). At times, if I think they suffer unbearably or if they're not an immediate threat to me, their suffering will emotionally bother me, I'm bothered by people's suffering by default in the absence of strongly resenting them, but there are times; not always, when I'm genuinely humiliated by the fact that I feel pity for people who would not feel the same for me.
I don't like the idea of not having compassion for all people, maybe you could say I have an all or nothing personality. I don't like the idea of their being a single exception to the universal compassion rule (just as I wouldn't want a bodhisattva or an angel to see me as the single exception to that rule). I don't like the arbitrariness of it. Again, I definitely do not care about all people, it's just something I can't really make peace with. I don't like having a personality that doesn't care about every single possible person's happiness/suffering. There are plenty of generally happy people who are very kind (I hate when people say people are 'happy' as though it were a personality trait and even being 'happy with one's life' or something like that seems to treat happiness as something other than a moment to moment emotional state. That said, even when I'm in an ok mood or enjoying myself there is always some deadly, threatening stressor that I must keep below the surface, if I was a dog my happiness would probably be pure) and miserable people who are selfish and cruel. In fact, I think many people are selfish and cruel because they are miserable and kind because they can afford to be; because they're happy and emotionally secure. I think it depends a lot on how someone 'uses' their pain and personality has a lot to do with it.
This is already long but I think egalitarianism is morally superior to both pure altruism and pure egoism. We should care about the happiness and suffering of all sentient beings whether it's our own or anyone else's, we shouldn't make a distinction to begin with. Whatever compassion I ever have for people there is always an 'egocentric' aspect to it in that I'm projecting myself on to them, I care about someone else's suffering because I care about my own suffering. I'm relating myself to their problem (even if the object of their pain is something that wouldn't bother me or something I have no personal experience with or if I reject a belief or value that enables or primes them to have a negative emotional response to something) which is why I could never get into something like deep ecology, I can't identify with the planet itself or other insentient things.

8:00 I was always someone who believed in the greater good, give to others and they'll give back. Nah, I was just a slave to be used, even with simple things like if I asked for a homework answer, they would just say no, I don't get it, is it that hard to lift up your notebook and just show me the answers? I was always the one who helped others. Now I'm just bitter and tired of people, 90% of people are at least subconsciously evil and narcy, no point helping ANYONE and I will just say No.

  • @HereToSuffer247

it seems that way doesn't it? logically we should understand that being selfish is just a human impulse because of course we find ourselves to be number 1 priority because we cant feel others pain besides our own. That's why pain is the meaning to life, without pain you cant have pleasure, you wouldn't know what bad is. If we pretend others cant feel any sensations, then we will find life to be meaningless which implies suffering is meaningless.

Makes perfect sense. Everyones in it for themselves. The problem is that we can only infer other people's consciousness and not directly access it which leads to so much unnecessary suffering.
