For me the biggest disappointment in bodybuilding was the introduction of insulin in 1995. Athletes started getting bigger but muscle quality and separation was not the same and of course that awful midsection distention came along. I remember when wheeler and dillet started the pro carreer in 1993 at the ironman and arnold classic. I was blown away by their physique and I was thinking "and this is just the beginning..." But the truth is wheeler never got better than at the 1993 AC and dillet's best year was 1994. After that 1994, in my view, bodybuilding went downhill.

He had an amazing frame though, and helped me out of a bad situation, so I have affection and respect for the dude.

He was known as one of the strongest bodybuilders at the time, so obviously he trained hard. He also got into fantastic condition, so he dieted hard. I don't think you have to live like a monk to succeed in bodybuilding? Some people live and breath it, but some don't.

He also entered many other shows in the early parts of the year as well. Maybe he had a month or 2 off here and there, but I don't see where he could have had the long breaks he claims. Matt mendenhall was just a point away in 1982 against one of the guys who has a case for being the greatest bodybuilder of all time. Crushing. As for Rory Leidelmeyer, I honestly don't understand how he lost to Bob paris. Looking at the contest it seems to be a case where he had Paris beat on every objective criteria but the judges just thought Paris looked more aesthetic or something.

Ferrigno is the biggest disappointment. If he didn’t retire he would’ve been a 5-6 time Olympia champ at least. He would’ve ushered in the mass monster era 15 years before it happened.
Since Richards is on the list as one of the best who wasn't a pro and didn't fulfill their potential I'd add Matt Mendenhall and Edgar Fletcher too. Fletcher had insane genetics. Not a great back though.
I always believed gunter deserved to win at least 1 olympia. I mean the man had it all. Size, aesthetics, near perfect posing, always in shape. It always baffled me how he never won

I'm 58. I watched a lot of disappointments unfold. Mentzer in '80 after a perfect score in the Universe was easily the biggest for me. And personally I always wanted to see Gaspari take one from Haney, but the Weider boys had their man for that time period so that was never going to happen. I remember the first time I saw Vic Richards. Very impressive. The original mass monster. Some might argue for Sergio Oliva but Richards had the more modern look with mass and conditioning.
You can't put Gaspari losing to Haney in any year down to favouritism, he was literally dwarfed in the frame department. If he'd hung that meat on a wider shouldered, smaller wasted, longer armed frame, he'd have had a good shout. In his prime he was like a anti-Brian Buchanan.
Can't believe Phil Heath and Jay Cutler won that many Olympias, then did not deserve it. Gary Strydom would have been an awesome Mr Oympia. Bertil Fox should have won the 1983 Olympia, disgusting IFFBB politics.
Strydom got a two year contract for million a year, mr Olympia was paying 100,000 at the time from memory I know someone a pro bodybuilder who was also asked to join the same federation but didn’t do it Financially strydom made it
I still think part of the qualifications for winning the pros is marketability, and Kai Green had a blatantly "unprofessional" attitude. Strydom, though... there is no excuse for him not to have been a superstar except for the resentment of participating in the WBF. But what is most frustrating is that what the judges prefer is constantly in flux, and some bodybuilders train their whole life to be massive only to find out that aesthetics is the new trend. It is very difficult to be both huge and proportional, but I think now judges are looking for a compromise - or a synthesis - of the two, which has always been my preference.

I was a fan of Gary Strydom and I question why he never placed higher than he did. Turns out, since I was never at a show he competed against Lee Haney with, I never saw a good back comparison. Facing front and from some side pose he looks on par with Lee, however turn them around and Haney's back is like a dense and thick cobra, while Gary looks like he skipped too many back days...
Personally, I think Strydem should be top 3 in this. He was incredible but just backed the wrong guy. But to be banned “for life” was the biggest kick in the nuts. Really sad
Paul Dillet was a freak but god damn he was a horrible poser… He shuddered when he posed and he hit every pose weird and on top of it all he made funny faces when he did it, like there’s front doubles where he starts doing a smile that looks like Jim Carrey version of the Grinch lol
I heard he had some sort of nerve issue, not to mention asthma which is why he seemed exhausted (he seemed exhausted because he was). People say he had perfect genetics but in my opinion a genetic illness that impedes your ability to pose should count as a negative aspect of your genetics.

He also had multiple injuries, both shoulders, lower back and both knees (back when he played football) which may have hampered his bodybuilding career. Not many people realise any of this, and are too quick to jump on the bandwagon dissing his posing without knowing any of his background first! There's no wonder he couldn't hold a pose due to how bad his asthma was and how poor his back was due to injuries!
I think you’re a little off here Marx. The guys of the 90s have said that if Dillet turned up in show condition he would’ve won way more than he did. He was always a little off plus had below par posing. Also victor richards never showed Dorian who the man was. Looking huge in guest posing shape is something all of the top pros can do, but in the 90s, turning up in grainy condition is what counted on the competitive stage, and in that respect victor never tested himself, and Dorian showed everyone who the man was in almost all of his Olympia wins, bar the Nasser controversy in 97 I think it was.
Matt mendenhall, Paul dillet , 97 Nasser and 2018 Olympia are the most disappointing. Matt and Paul never reaching they're potential, and Nasser and Phil loosing those years.
Strydom had very weak back compared to the top, from the front and side he was with the best, from the back he wasn't top 10. Dillet also had a weak back compared tot the top guys, shows are won from the back, from the front Dillet dwarfed anybody. Calling Flex an amateur because Dillet was bigger is stupid haha, Flex was perfection 🙌🏼 Vic Richards won his Pro card in Nigeria, but his proportions upper and lower segment weren't great.
I believe Vic Richards did actually earn a pro card by winning the Nigerian nationals, which he was eligible for since he still held Nigerian citizenship. He, of course, never competed as a pro though.

Paul didnt take training seriously and sometimes skipped taking gear when he should have. He definately didnt do what he could have.
Paul had a long torso and his symmetry was always off. He was a freak size wise though.

Matt mendenhall, Paul dillet , 97 Nasser and 2018 Olympia are the most disappointing. Matt and Paul never reaching they're potential, and Nasser and Phil loosing those years.

Strydom had very weak back compared to the top, from the front and side he was with the best, from the back he wasn't top 10.
Dillet also had a weak back compared tot the top guys, shows are won from the back, from the front Dillet dwarfed anybody.

I believe Vic Richards did actually earn a pro card by winning the Nigerian nationals, which he was eligible for since he still held Nigerian citizenship. He, of course, never competed as a pro though.

It's more likely that it was more confortable for him not to enter a competition and benefit from the image of being "that genetic freak who's bigger than the pros".
