  • The deadly school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, has revived the debate over arming teachers and posting armed guards at schools. Robb Elementary did have a resource officer, but he was unable to stop the massacre. Video has surfaced that shows the shooter effortlessly entering the school through an unlocked door. Inside Edition spoke to locals who said the door was unlocked because of an honor roll ceremony that took place earlier that day.

Changing gun laws might change that, but doesn't change the current reality as it takes time and doesn't always work. Hiring military personnel and making schools into prisons is extreme, but allowing educators with the proper training to arm themselves if they so choose is only a logical response to a present threat which those educators don't have the power to stop except by their own actions in the moment, which they can only take if they have the tools to do so.

Fix the school systems first, that would just about solve this problem entirely. The school systems do NOT punish bullies, they do nothing about it. Every school I’ve been to has had teachers who ignore bullying, and despite reporting it to the dean of your schools over 10 times that someone’s bullying you, the dean either ignores it and tells you that it’s okay and they probably don’t mean it, your best case is a warning. It gets to a point where the school staff begin to dislike you because you make them do there jobs.

It is weird to see in retrospect the amount of security changes that were made to my highschool after some bomb and shooting threats, good or bad.
They got the man traps, IDs and ID scanners, metal scanners both at the entrance and handheld, transparent bags, multiple cameras on every floor, police at every door and sometimes through the halls, including the lockdown drills, which all seemed to be put into place in the span of around 6-7 years in response to threats. Not including Covid happening and havin’ to wear masks and get checked every so often once you were able to go back to school.
I think me and the bois used to joke that we were the “Guinea Pig” class cuz we always went into each year with our expectations from graduates completely shattered as they implemented all these things and the overall flow and vibe got different.
Now there’s gonna be rounded hallways for less sight lines and teachers with guns. It seems normal for me cuz it’s been slowly integrated and we kinda had to adapt, but the school life do be weird nowadays.

I use to deliver to an Elementary school in North Dallas. You have to be buzzed into the first door and the second set of doors they have to open to let you in.... Any school out there that does not at least have that kind of security measure needs to re-evaluate their schools security.. If you have kids, I would suggest testing their schools security mid day, if you find a side door unlock or you can just walk in with no problem, raise all hell.... Sandy hook was the first, now this, if these schools don't start adding security it is on them... and the government for shutting down mental hospitals where these people need to be....

The school i went to in elementary school had a buzz in at the front door, every other door was an emergency exit and would set an alarm if opened. In my middle/ highschool (It was in the same building. I attended the school 6th-11th grade), we had an armed police sheriff stationed at the school. The only time he left was to do petrols for students skipping class and to watch the cross walks outside the front of the school for reckless drivers. The highschool also had the two door locking system but i believe the second lock was a lock accessible from the inside of the building (A manual bolt lock inside the door). It worked. Though i wished we had metal detectors. The school i graduated from was an alternative school. The school that accepts the kids that all the other schools have expelled them from. They had a buzzer system and the same alarm system as my elementary school, i think i metal detector too.

Every teen school shooter has been bullied. Systems need to be in place to document the bully and the person being bullied. Bullies should be harshly punished so they will not desire to bully again. The person being bullied needs to be documented and followed up with help, counseling, and monitored for possible tendencies for violent tendencies. The counselors responsible for follow ups and monitoring needs some accountability. It’s not perfect but better than what exists now.

Arming teachers shouldn't be a thing, teachers dont sign up to be a psuedo cop or soldier. They also shouldnt have the liability to take the person out either. As for vets, which i am, not every vet wants to do that line of work again and to have 1-3 vets per school in the US will literally cost multiple billions of dollars every year to pay them a living wage. So be prepared for a spike in taxes if that were to happen.

I dont get people against putting those special doors and armed personnel on school grounds. They're never gonna give up their rights to bare arms, so why wouldn't you want every saftey measure possible to prevent these tragedies? Were just coming out of lock down, there's going to be a lot of people who do these stupid things.
They don't have to make the doors "scary", they can decorate them for elementary schools, make a game out of it even. The armed guards could wear normal clothing, with a badge or lanyard for verification.
I'd rather have "jail" like measures, than a dead child...
