- As Sarah Jane Cavanaugh tells it, she earned a Purple Heart “for actions in Afghanistan,” and a bronze star with a “V” for valor. From handing out awards to acting as master of ceremonies, she certainly seemed like a true war hero. But there’s one small problem: the Marines told Inside Edition there’s no record of her serving in the military at all, let alone earning all those medals.
Absolutely disgusting that someone could take that honor away from our veterans. That is absolutely no way to pay them back for their service.
Nobody cares though. Someone could do this everyday, nothing changes in my life or yours!

I am a disabled veteran. I did not do a lot but I am proud of my few years in the Navy. This stealing valor and fraud behavior is beyond disgusting.

I simply meant that an honest life is a good life whether you were a SEAL and a CMH winner or an auto mechanic who did good work and charged a reasonable price. It's sad that some people have to invent alternate lives to get attention for things they never did.

She was also a submarine paratrooper assigned to the first Mars action brigade fighting giant spiders.
Wrong she was the Door Gunner for the Space Shuttle for the 1st Starship Marines Squad. Her awards and decorations actually came from WWI and WWII. After WWII she was cryogenically frozen to only be awakened during the dark times when the world needs her the most. At the time cryogenic freezing was a new science so the cryo sleep pods were lined with asbestos that gave her cancer.

Not only did this woman commit stolen valor, she committed fraud for her own personal gain. She lied about having cancer, which in itself is a slap in the face of people who actually have cancer. She crafted a story and basically manufactured a military background so that she could reap the benefits. She definitely deserves a lengthy sentence for her actions.

My wife died from cancer, I now have cancer. For her to claim she has cancer is beyond insulting.

This makes me mad! My husband is an air force vet he won't even apply for any benefits because he is afraid he's taking away from a vet that needs them and he doesn't want delay or hurt another vet. How someone can do this is terrible
My Uncle Served in the Air Force he was 20 when he got deployed and turned 21 overseas (he is 33 now Married and has a daughter) how do people do something like this to other people and steal the Uniforms that people died in and pretend that they served in the military and earned those stars i have a great idea the ones who pose as a fake veteran should get deployed without any training so they can see what it feels like to lose people they care about 😡😡

The most surprising thing of all is that she was performing this "Combat Veteran" charade in her own backyard, where she grew up. She was even the local VFW commander? Someone in that community had to know that she never spent one day in the military! Beyond that, this woman has a family. I simply can't believe that no one was aware that she was pulling this despicable stunt.
No parents? No siblings? No classmates? Seems weird but maybe she was a loner/loser and this was her life.
This highlights the need for Americans to become more engaged with true veterans, family members, old friends, new friends as was once part of American culture.
One thing that's not American is social distancing which merely encourages more con artists to ply their dispicable trade.

@@choreomaniac Actually, she received a MSW degree and was employed by the VA, in Providence, as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. She was working as a professional? That is how she was able to obtain a real Marine's DD214 information.
For those that aren’t aware. The paperwork she used and forged to legitimize her service were taken from various real veterans and active service members including DD-214s. Hence why she was charged with identity theft.

So many negative emotions bubble up from seeing this. The lies, the deception, the grift and the absolute gall to “collect donations” from people who genuinely believed she was a Combat veteran. Seems elaborate, well thought out and lots of planning and “keeping a story” straight, whilst wearing a uniform and Purple Heart, - knowing she hadn’t done those things. Just blows my mind. She got 6 yrs in jail and has to pay back $300K. She's such a loser that her lawyer asked if she could see her psychiatrist before she was taken into custody, the Judge said no.

Yeah, that "for actions in Afghanistan" immediately stood out to me. A purple heart isn't awarded for actions, and no one that legitimately received a purple heart would ever phrase it like that.
That one got me as well. All it takes to get a purple heart is to get hurt in combat. It's something that happens to many soldiers who experience combat. You don't see people going around bragging about how great they were at there fast food job, because they burned themselves on the grill. There's no shame in getting a purple heart, but its not something to brag about, and hype up like it's some kind of achievement. If I served in the military, and got a purple heart, I would probably be very bitter about it. I'm bitter about all work related injuries I received in my life.

I've become quite jaded with this country's direction and focus since I got out in '86. Seek veteran's groups in your area/region or support from your closest VA. Other vets can offer guidance and a caring ear.

My boyfriend was a veteran. He served in the US Marine Corps. He came home with PTSD. I knew him almost his entire life, since kindergarten. He completely changed when he got back. He took over a handful of different prescriptions daily. Some that caused him to become addicted to like Xanax, due to his PTSD. Less than a decade after completing his service, he was found dead in his bathtub. That in itself is a long story. I think he was murdered. But because of all the prescriptions in his system, he was labeled a drug addict. Screw anyone who pretends to have served for our country

My Brother seen action in Vietnam, he handled the radio, seen his best friend killed. He came home and wasn't the same. I cannot imagine what he seen or others have seen during wars. Some came home some didn't. I'm proud of him and so many others who actually served and serving. This was definitely stolen Valor. My Brother is so much better,loving, kind,generous, a good provider and volunteers at the only VA hospital for several states, Albuquerque NM. He is the youngest vet,75. Thank you again

Yeah…. my new roommate claims he served in the military. But he applied for a job and failed his background check. Apparently his high school has no record of him even graduating. He supposedly has a HS diploma though? Forged?? Now I don’t even know if he even served in the military…
her medals were wrong. the ira medal had no stars. 1 deployment to iraq/afghanistan = 1 medal and 1 star. 2 deployments is 2 stars. you get a star for each deployment/campaign

I had a grandpa who served in Vietnam as a nurse, (he quickly had to serve on the front lines after recruitment) and he was injured from a shot to the foot. He didn’t get a Purple Heart and didn’t want to bring it up as he called it a sissy wound. Overall he was a good guy and I hate that anyone would steal valor.
And to make his story more heroic, Purple Hearts weren’t handed out as easily during WW2 and the Vietnam/Korean war

I know a combat wounded Marine that told me the Purple Heart is the only medal he never wanted to get, because of what is involved. He wears his medals with deserved pride.

Marines aren’t soldiers. Marines serve in the Marine Corps and soldiers serve in the Army.
As a Marine myself, and as ANY Marine could, tell this was fake when they saw the nasty salute. And I’m not even kidding. Marines know what I’m taking about.

You must always trust...but verify. The DD Form 214 issued to every discharged service member lists the medals they have earned during their period of service. Demand to see it before giving anyone that sort of place of honor! And shame on those who didn't bother to check.
As a Marine, and a Vietnam "ERA" veteran, I find this extremely offensive. I knew many Marines during my time who fought in Vietnam. This disgusting excuse for a human being dishonors all who served. She should be made to give back every cent she recieved. What a total low life.

As an ACTUAL Purple Heart recipient, I can say firsthand that the day I received it did change my life forever. It is a constant reminder of loss. And of the guilt I feel daily that I lived and so many of the best friends I have ever had did not. There's not a thing grand or glorious about it. I don't put it on a shelf or in a display case.

Heard or read a story a while back about a old vet that gave his son his purple heart the day he left to join with a message saying "now you have one, see that you don't get another." I'm a US Navy veteran....and as far as I'm concerned is that she needs to be prosecuted... and as part of her punishment make her go to the VA and apologize to all wounded veterans and honorably discharged veterans...

It's sad to think how she put all this immense effort into lying, deceiving and conning everyone around her. If she had put a mere 10% of this effort into trying to live an honest life, she probably could have still made something of herself

I’m not a veteran but my dad was and really suffered as a result of his service in Vietnam and died an early death. Very upsetting that someone would steal the valor of those who served our country and especially that she claimed a Purple Heart. Really upsetting to see this.

I think a lot of times it's a kind of sickness/illness--illusions of grandeur and fame and all that, they get so obsessed with it they start portraying it in real life and fool people into joining them in the fantasy. However when they start taking/making money out of it, that's just straight up fraud. Love how she drove off in a pricey lookin', fairly new Volvo...and allegedly paid off her mortgage like this.

I'm a retired Canadian trucker and most of my loads were to and from all over the USA. I ran into so many ex military people. Truck drivers, cops, DOT guys, mechanics and shippers and receivers etc etc, I never ever heard any of them brag about any medals or being heroes. They would say it really sucked in the middle east. I always considered USA as my second home and had nothing but respect for your military.
I would have no respect at all for someone like that woman or how to even deal with her.
I remember also a while ago, a guy on AGT pulled the same stunt.

Absolutely disgusting. My husband served for 6 years while his former friend dropped out of boot camp after less than a week. His former friend had the nerve to claim he was a veteran and attempt to claim military discounts 😡🤬. Hence why he is a former friend now. None of his friend group speaks to this person anymore many of whom also served.
Well i did my 11month of basic and belong to my nation national guard but i wouldnt compare my service to real war/deployed veterans..

My grandfather was awarded 6 bronze stars by the time he was discharged from the army in world war 2. I love my grandfather to pieces and would proudly display 6 bronze stars in his memory but I would not wear them. I would make sure they were in a frame with his credit added to them.
I know my uncle who served in vietnam and my grandfather both would tell you stories and start off smiling and such but as they got into their stories they would literally turn white and their smile turn to a quiver. Tears filling their eyes and most often unable to finish the story.
They earned their awards and they lost part of their life in their wars. Even despite grandpa returning without any lost limbs they still were never the same.
Seeing them the way they were forever changed they truly deserve the respect of having an award only given to those who truly earned them. Not someone buying them online and pretending to receive what these veterans did. They may only be metal and ribbon but what they represent is something that only those who truly earned one should be able to display.
She said a Purple Heart will change your life forever? I received a Purple Heart in Vietnam in 1968. I put it in a nice shadow box with the certificate and gave it to my mom and dad. Great parents who deserved it. When they passed on our son had just gradated medical school via a Navy scholarship and had five-year payback. When he was leaving, I gave the Purple Heart to him for what he had accomplished. It hangs on the wall of his home office today.
If I got a purple heart. Would it be okay to just safely secure it somewhere ein your house and forget about it, to avoid the content reminder?
Disgusting, I don’t understand why anyone would want to pretend to be a Purple Heart recipient, let alone pretend to be in the military. These recipients have gone through hell and back and continue to struggle from their traumas and injuries. I hope they throw her in the brig instead of prison.

20+ years ago a friend of mine started telling girls he was a marine and he'd seen action in Bosnia. I pulled him aside and set him straight. We were teenagers back then but I knew some things you just don't do.
I can’t believe someone would do that to our vets! She literally took things that weren’t even hers to begin with & made it so much worse. I hope she gets what’s coming to her.

I had 2 tours in theatre but often I go shopping etc with loads of stuff that makes me look like a stolen valor guy and when I am confronted I just make a big scene and try to escelate it as much as possible.
She got 6 years in prison, 3 years probation and she has to pay back the almost $300,000 that she grifted.
I’m watching this as a cancer survivor and before they even said anything about cancer I was like “wow that’s more screwed up than pretending to have survived cancer or something” and then BAM 😂😂 what she did is so terrible but I love seeing justice served after the fact. I’m a retired USAF veteran. I was never deployed to a combat area. Was almost deployed for Desert Shield/Storm but it ended before I was to be deployed. I did however support the USMC that went into Beirut. I’m proud of my 21 year career and am appalled by those that think it is ok to steal valor. Glad she was caught.

His wife thought he was just a drunk. My brothers and I went through his things after he died. We found he had a bronze star for bravery. He was infantry and never a cook. His own wife of 53 years never knew he saw combat.
I didn't even know my father had medals from Vietnam.
We found them in a dusty old box under his bed after he passed.

I served in Iraq in 2005 with B co. 3/7 Infantry 3rd ID. Six men from my company recieved purple hearts. And 5 of them were killed. This woman infuriates me.

Sometimes family isn't that close. It took my friend years, during her relationship to put the pieces together that her boyfriend had stolen valor. He didn't let my friend really interact with his family, she's a veteran, And he claimed to be but could never produce any documents. She couldn't find anything publicly informative for her. I think a very sick person has to impersonate.

As a Marine veteran who did two tours in Iraq, this is disgusting what she did and I hope she spends years in prison for her disgraceful actions. I do know that the military is not for everyone and that you may not have been able to serve for a variety of reasons, but if you still can serve your country in many other ways like volunteering at the VA, sending care packages to deployed service members, help rase funds for the USO, etc. You can serve your country in many ways but pretending to be something you're not is disgraceful and stealing money from the veteran's is criminal and I would be fine with her being held accountable as any other Marine would be, since she wants to be one. Unbelievable!! I am a veteran, and living with one kidney after a very rare cancer took my left one. Secondary infection almost did me in. I have a truly devoted and loving family that saw me through. The betrayal you feel and disgust for someone who can do this kind of thing. I hope she’s put in prison for this maybe she’ll learn not to tell lies after some real punishment. That and dumping some bed pans at the VA.

My grandfather served in World War 2 and he was at Normandy on D day. That night he was in a foxhole with another soldier. The other soldier lit a cigarette and that gave the Germans a target. They were hit with a mortar shell, killing the other soldier instantly and wounding my grandfather. He was in a coma for 3 months and he died with shrapnel still in his arm from that mortar at the age of 82. I don't know why, but my grandfather never received a purple heart. I know this happened a while ago, but it's infuriating that someone would parade around with a store bought purple heart, but my grandfather never got his. RIP PawPaw. Staff Sgt. Being a vet and deployed, there’s a lot that goes on with stress and other things we see. I didn’t receive a Purple Heart or other high ranking medals but for someone to do this is too much. On top of that she received donations for falsified claims. What a shame! Hope everyone has a good Memorial weekend.
Yes most of us just did our jobs but the heroic thing is we were WILLING to lie down our lives for our country. My husband served 25 years USN and post 9/11, he was deployed constantly!! Sarah never knew what any of that life was about. Sarah also gave benefits to her wife, travel etc. She should be prosecuted too! God bless you and America 🇺🇸

So much has changed. My Dad fought with the 2nd Division thru France, Belguim, and Germany....ran over by a tank, spent 6 months in hospital. His purple heart was never sent due to an error. He never even thought about challenging the government for it. He was just thankful to be home and alive. We, kids, encouraged him to get it but he never cared.
Even more brazenly, Cavanaugh exploited her purported experiences to assume leadership roles in the veteran community, including as commander of a VFW Post in North Kingstown, RI; gave public speeches while dressed in full U.S. Marine uniform, complete with a Purple Heart and Bronze Star that she purchased on the internet; and secured a spot in an arts program at the University of Southern California, a program she described to a U.S. Army veteran she met through the Wounded Warrior Program who was later accepted into the program. In a letter to the court, the Army veteran faulted Cavanaugh for taking “a spot [in the program] from another veteran who could have participated in the program and, ultimately, may not have committed suicide.”
