CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Danny (Leonardo DiCaprio) tells Maddy (Jennifer Connelly) about life in Africa and the death of his parents.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
A South African mercenary and a Mende fisherman find their fates forever intertwined as they embark on a quest to obtain a rare and highly coveted pink diamond in director Edward Zwick's frantic adventure drama. Ripped from his family farm and forced to toil away in the sweltering South African diamond fields, Solomon Vandy (Djimon Hounsou) discovered an extraordinary rough stone of immeasurable value. Danny Archer (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a hired gun who specializes in the sale of so-called "blood diamonds" that are used to finance rebellions and terrorist organizations, and is currently serving time for smuggling. As a bloody civil war rages in Sierra Leone and Archer learns that Vandy has safely hidden the diamond in a place where no one would ever suspect, the pair enlist the aid of disillusioned American journalist Maddy Bowen (Jennifer Connelly) in recovering the treasure that has the power to save Vandy's family and provide the desperate Archer with a much-needed chance for redemption.

At first I thought Leonardo Di Caprio was more of a pretty boy actor as in he got most jobs for his looks, but I must say....he shut me the hell up

And just because people attend a church doesn't mean they're Christians. anyone can go to a building every Sunday and Wednesday, doesn't mean they're Christians, Jesus said: "If you love me you will keep my commandments".

Having grown up in South Africa as someone who isn't white (Lebanese Heritage) when he says "That diamond is my ticket is my out of this God forsaken continent" I get what he means! South Africa was my home for 23 years, but it is such a rough and brutal place.
Whats crazy is most people feel trapped, they just live in it. Here in the states I see so many people living in slums in places like Chicago or Detroit. If they just grabbed their clothes and threw them in their car and drove away. A few tanks of gas later they would be in a better place where they could find a job and start a better life.

There are many great scenes but for some reason this scene really gets me. I don't know how he did not win an Oscar for his performance because this scene is fabulous. Just heart wrenching.

this movie has always stood out as an eminently re watchable movie. I revisit it every couple years or so.

Everyone talks about Romeo & Juliette/Titanic being Leo's breakout films. In my view this was his breakout film! The heart he poured into this part was unreal. I always thought of De Caprio as a pretty boy, until I saw this movie. Man has heart. Heart n soul..
nobody on the planet thinks blood diamond is leo's break-out film. 2006? Come on. He was the lead in the biggest movie of all time a decade earlier, and you're gonna sit here and say blood diamond was his break-out - it's not even that good, not that it matters in this context

“God left this place a long time ago”. He’s not wrong. The death, manslaughter, and brutal corruption we’ve caused. How could we possibly be forgiven for what we’ve done to each other.

That's why they spoke English and why White Rhodesian culture was/is distinct from both Boer/Voortrekker culture and Anglo South African culture (often descended from middle or officer class English, like White Kenyans). You don't get De Klerks you get Smiths. You don't get Bloemfontein you get Salisbury.

This scene resonated with me so much even when I was a kid. Ever since, I couldn't help but think that if there is a God, we can pray all we want, he will never forgive us for what we did to his creation.

Having worked in diamond sales myself for years certainly the customers need to insist products are ethically sourced but many have no conscious about it same as all the ivory from slaughtered elephants left to rot for years etc.

Incredible scene. He went through the nightmare of Mugabes terror brigade, who butchered farmers, like Danny’s parents, before it became Zimbabwe. He saw the killings as a boy, and was reared in South Africa, after he was orphaned
