"Don't trust that pilot for a second. You point this at his head if he fucks around." This comes to my head every time I remember about this movie. Genuine words.
Forget the superb acting, the great writing only the background music alone should have won this film so many awards. By far the most moving background music I've ever heard in a movie.
The key in understanding this movie is that Danny Archer is African - as much as Solomon is. A Rhodesian, living his whole life in civil wars, since birth, losing parents to rebels, going through most things black Africans go through. Fighting in a war since he was 19, first soldier later mercenary, then smuggler. As he dies, he tells the american girl ''I am exactly where i'm supposed to be'' - in Africa. T.I.A.
Not only that, but also that he served with the South African armed forces in Angola against an imaginary communist threat, military conflict in which some hypocritical countries such as Cuba were supposed to go to fight in order to suport the communist ideals, but at the end as Danny Archer said earlier in the movie, "everybody was looking to gain some profit and they were fighting for the same reasons (to obtain diamonds, gold, petrolium, etc). So Danny was a mercenary because he lived in a material, violent, selfish and cruel world, but a moment of true love changed his point of view.
I love Archer's realization when he looks at the diamond. He starts laughing because of the irony that he risked (or gave) his life for a stone that big. Great job improvising.
Basically he gains the clairvoyance at the end to see how he is going to die a painful death over a fuckin rock. Then he looks at Solomon & his son & finally sees there was always so much more. & he’d rather die for that. Crazy movie
His blood spills onto the dirt, onto the land of the continent he sought so dearly to leave. A pained childhood in Rhodesia, a tainted view of his true native land was all that was left of it. But now as he lay dying, he finally accepts his place in the world. It was in Africa. He'd spent so much time trying to escape, but he loves his real home. He died a son of Africa. Right where he was supposed to be.
much better. and so was his performance in the departed and wolf of wall street. all of those films were Oscar worthy performances, but the academy failed to recognize that. the only reason he got an Oscar for the revenant was as a reimbursement for his other performances.
Leo should've gotten an Oscar for this film. I cried during this scene. He nailed the accent and conveyed such powerful emotion. He doesn't get the girl or the diamond but is at peace knowing that Solomon can take his son home and is truly an African. He crosses over the line from being a self-seeking cynic to a man of compassion.
That's why his death left me so angry. This isn't just about a conflict where innocent children are kidnapped and killed. It's also about a man trying to find and forge his own path. I'm glad he felt he had done the right thing but the price he paid was his life.
His death made me so sad man. Especially when he said “you take your boy home huh, you take him home huh” i felt like here they really had like a friendship moment where they both didnt care about anything like the diamond and all and just having a talk as finally becoming friends after danny only using him for that diamond all the way to the end. Sad movie alright
Incredible how real Di Caprio makes the pain look. It might seem simple but trust me, its hard as hell to make it look this realistic. But in terms of Di Caprio, just another one of his amazing talents. One of the few "pretty-boy" actors i actually respect
The part where Archer looks at the diamond and laughs is so meaningful. To have given so much, to have risked so much for this tiny material possesion under the guise of an escape. Life's greatest ironic mystery that you only unravel at the very end of your journey...
They had to re-shoot the scene of Solomon carrying Danny like 12 times before the director told Solomon to act like he was struggling (because of how strong he actually is in real life)
DiCaprio was great in Revenant. He was really good in Shutter Island too and Wolf of Wall Street. But this and the Rhodesian accent he put on deserved him an Oscar. This is his best film imo.
Probably one of the best scenes in movie history, two terrific actors and such an emotional and dramatic way to conclude the characters of Danny Archer and Solomon Vandi, couldn't be more perfect.
He has been acting for a long time. It's so hard to pin down what his greatest performance was. I LOVED many of his movies: Titanic, Inception, Blood Diamond, Shutter Island, The quick and the dead, and the Wolf of Wall Street
If one bad man has the potential to change, then maybe the neighborhood can change.....that kind of change can spread throughout the city....and finally back to me. I know I am fighting a war I can never truly hope to win, but if can save but one soul, I know my work is done. - Batman
Perhaps, but considering all the times along the way he bonded with Solo, I kind of doubt it. I like to think that he would have tried to reunite Solo with his family and later get together with maggie
Probably, but take into account all the changes he went through, especially meeting maddy, there were several hints that he would have probably at least help Solo to get on the plane. He was going to take the Diamond anyway in return for Giving Solomon what he wanted.
***** im srry but i agree with JAKphoenixify only because i watch the whole movie just hours ago....yes Danny did say he didn't give a shit about Solo.....but that was at the beginning and Danny not out of desperation and spite gave the diamond to Solo but because seeing that he wouldn't make it...he gave the rock to Solo to help him which meant he care for Solo. Bottom line is Danny changed after all.
i love this part from blood diamond. i can watch the movie anytime at home and it never fails me to enjoy and watch leonardo dicaprio bond with djimon houson:')
Such a fantastic movie DiCaprio lived and died as archer The way he hands over the diamond and saying take it take it with that troubled breath is some kind of splendid acting
Movies that carry a message often drown the story with preaching that destroys both the movie and whatever they're trying to communicate. But Blood Diamond does it perfectly. It doesn't harp on the diamond issue, it only shows the horrors of Africa and places references to it with subtlety. It could have ruined the movie for Solomon to be standing over his dead family screaming "WHY! Diamonds!" THANK YOU movie! Fantastic job!
I love it how he carry him up the hill. It takes inmense strength and love to do that for other full grown man! And the fact that they are from different ras makes it even greater!

My favorite scene in this movie and one of my favorite scenes of Leonardo Dicaprio. He is a genius actor- the best in my opinion. Hopefully he will finally win an Oscar this year!

kolisionn If anything Djimon Honsou deserved something for this... The scene in the prison, the scene at the fence in Guinea and ESPECIALLY the scene with the shovel - i mean those eyes and that expression... it was absurd how real and powerful it felt!
I like how the film leaves it open-ended about what Leo would've done had he not been shot. Would he still have been so noble and helped Solomon and his son? But it doesn't matter because he was shot and came to accept not only the situation but who he was and he was at peace.
The only movie I have ever cried.. Amazing film! The main character gave everything for this Diamond and in the end became a good person and helped the weaker and the other guy's more meaningful life.
He got Scorsese'd that's why I mean shit he only won for the Revenant because it became so goddamn obvious that beyond a shadow of doubt the academy seemingly enjoyed fucking him out of an Oscar (it wasn't until his 6th nomination that he won.) I believe that he was up until that point the most nominated actor without a win - 1 for best supporting actor 1 for best producer and 4 for best actor (his 4th being the Revenant) also it's good to point out that he was also looking at 2 best actor nominations in one year with blood diamond and for the departed however he asked to be pulled out of the nomination list for the departed because he wanted another deserving hard working actor to get the recognition for their talent and further proof that he's not a selfish greedy prick but instead a man with both class and genuine selflessness. He also chose the departed to be his choice to pull out vs blood diamond because he wanted the attention to go towards a story that few knew of and exposing how horribly corrupt and greedy these powerful douchebags were/are shining light on a story based on facts correctly aiming to have an impact on any diamonds sold being under the microscope by both consumer and government. I worked for a jewelry store for about a year and about 90% of the people I sold any type of diamond to requested proof of it's origin. Many would only purchase Canadian mined diamonds because they new for a fact that nobody lost a hand or their life for that diamond.

Ethan Roe I Know Right! >.
Ethan Roe Forest Whittaker..."The Last King of Scotland"...both arguably great acts imo
P. Charmin and he made the departed in the same year but you can’t get nominated twice for the same category twice in one year
Even Djimon lost out the Supporting Oscar! I am more awestruck by him than Leo here...
Hell naw. He deserved to win for Calvin Candy. That was an epic role
"Arche, you're a dead man!" "Yeah, yeah." Most badass reply back to the enemy

Leo and djimon hounsou both deserved the Oscar. Thumbs up if you agree.
