When I was a kid, this was my least favorite scene from the movie, because I thought all the talking was boring. Now that I'm older, this is one of my favorite moments from the whole film. Archer might not have liked to admit it at the time, but deep down inside the Colonel was right, and he knew.

It really depends on which Europeans you are talking about, some were persecuted protestants who fled the Catholics. Some were poor migrants who wanted to create a new life for themselves in a new world. Others were just prospectors.

Pure-blooded rhodies are VERY expensive "trophy" dogs for many well financed pet owners, and in conjunction with his massive estate, armed body guards, and personal vineyard, it goes to show just how much money the man has made off of the death and suffering he visits upon his own countrymen. The pure bloodline of the dogs might also be a metaphor as well.

It's based on Executive Outcomes, though a biased take on the company. In the movie, the Colonel from the movie was an ex-SADF 32 Battalion man. Then 32 Battalion disbanded, he took those that were unemployed and started his company, trading military services for concessions. It's just like how things were with the company Executive Outcomes - After the end of Apartheid many units of the SADF disbanded, many professional fighting men were left without a job, so the mining company hired them to be advisors and soldiers for their military branch.

I like the scene where the Rhodesian Ridgeback dog is walking near Arnold Vosloo. Ex Rhodesians to this day still own Rhodesian Ridgebacks. In this scene the dog implies a connection of this people to Rhodesia.
This scene saddens me greatly as several of the men I served with in the Rhodesian army have had their blood seep into the African soil. It chokes me up quite a bit.

I worked at sea with a salmon harvesting company in Scotland and the skipper of a boat that had a harvesting grader on it looked exactly like Mr Vosloo. He was gorgeous and a nice sight at 0600 on a stormy, cold morning!
The acting is so great in this movie, that even the dog knew when to begin walking, and in which direction... I know there's a technical term for that... I'm drawing a blank, I'm sure a film student could suss out what I mean.

You know one of the ridiculous things abou this movie is the whole idea of the diamond being worth millions. Remember, nobody has examined it. One guy saw it and quickly hid it, and the bad guy barely caught a glimpse of it. All they know is- its large, and its pink. They have no clue if its facetable, or how big the largest diamond from it will come out to, how clear it is, how many inclusions are in the facetable portion, or how pink it actually is. So they are going through all this effort for a stone that might wind up being worth anywhere from hundreds of millions to a couple tens of thousands of dollars. or maybe it might even be so heavily fractured and messed up that it turns out to be worthless.
My Chana (not my china) the word Chana comes from Zulu word umshana. I would be surprized if ex white Rhodesians even used the word Chana its more common to be used by white English speaking South Africans from Johannesburg or Durban who learned it from the Zulu people. My Chana (not my china) the word Chana comes from Zulu word umshana. I would be surprized if ex white Rhodesians even used the word Chana its more common to be used by white English speaking South Africans from Johannesburg or Durban who learned it from the Zulu people.
