  • If you're practising the Primary Series of Ashtanga Yoga you'll definitely have come across this challenging posture!
Utthita Hasta Padangusthasana is a challenging standing pose that asks you to balance on one leg whilst doing some funky stuff with your other leg. It requires strength, flexibility and balance but is very approachable when broken down into a few different modifications and progressions.
In this video I'll show you a few ways you can approach the posture as a beginner, how to progress to the full version and some different ways of challenging yourself even further once you're comfortable.

First I thought I could not do this pose. But after watching your video, I am confident that I can do it. I like very much your step by step approach. This approach is very effective for beginners. Can I ask you a favor? I am 65 years old and trying to learn dance moves. can you please list me and show me the yoga poses that would help me in learning the dance moves especially the poses for balancing the body. I am hoping to hear from you soon. Thank you sooooo much😃

hello! I am and always have really struggled to lift the leg just on its own. I never improve this... I don't think it's hamstring flexibility as i can keep my leg straight sitting or laying with my leg up. Its the strength i think, I would be interested in a sort of exercise i can do to strengthen the muscles to lift the leg higher while standing.

Hello. Thank you for the wonderful tutorial. Just wished to know that in the first variation, where we are lifting up the leg straight without hand support, while the leg is up ,do you recommend keeping the pelvic position neutral or going into a posterior pelvic tilt? Thank you again.
