This feels like our older cousin or brother is explaining the game and we just watch and follow his instructions
Do you mean when he says something like "This guy hit me BUT we have to roll again because something something"?
I thought the same thing
@@fosty. if you learned at 60% of how the rounds go, then its excellent. after a couple of games you are set
Great breakdown for beginners! Def a good call to not mention more complex things like strategems and command points. A lot of videos targeted at beginners still delve into this stuff which is fine, but it's nice to have something like this which really makes the ultra basics highly digestible.
David Ma thank you! That was the idea behind this video :)
couldn't agree more. My brother and I are playing 300 point games and simply sticking to the game that was described above. Basic rules and we are having a blast.
What are command points
@@rookhousestudios3686 Your army starts with a certain number of Command Points (CP, small games usually have 3), and you can spend CP to use Stratagems which add another layer of tactical depth to the game.
Perhaps you failed an important armour save, you could spend a Command Point to reroll that save, there's also a Stratagem called Fire Overwatch which lets you shoot at an enemy unit when it tries to charge you. Every different faction has their own unique list of Stratagems available too.
Fresh this is complex. Of course I’ve been gaming for decades. But this is crazy. How about an App that you just input attacker defender and get immediate result?
"Sacrificed their human form" oh the lore snob in me wants to explode right now.
@@superfluous9726 nah 1-1 I’d say necron weapons are insane but marines resilience balances it out imo
So what’s the truth then….?
@@FrancisSpaghetti Necrons are very scary space terminators, but they aren't 'insanely' powerful and can still be beaten with a good'ol marine (or 2, or 3), guardsmen drop like flies against them though
@@FrancisSpaghetti so before they were transferred into their necrodermis bodies, Necrons were a fleshy race called the Necrontyr. Necrontyr aren't humans
I don't think he meant literally human but rather still biological. Unless you take issue with the word sacrifice, then I can see your point as the term implies choice when most Necron'tyr had none/did so under false pretenses not knowing the C'tan would slurp their souls, if I'm remembering correctly.
Amazing video. As someone who was intimidated by the scale of 40k, seeing there was a 10 min video I watched it and at the end went "Huh, at its core I guess 40k isn't that complicated after all". Just wanted you to know that you've brought another player into 40k and you'll probably bring in many more
I’ve been collecting for 10+ years and have a ridiculous amount of models but never played. I haven’t really tried at my local store either because no one really wants to take that much time to teach from ground zero. Your intro was by far the easiest to understand compared to many others and I have a good basic grasp now. Thank you.
Sorry to hear that you never got play mate. Just be bold and go for it, you're missing out on tons of fun (though the painting is fun too :-) ) If you dont feel you are ready to go up against other players yet in your local GS then just take a few hours a week or less or however much time you are willing to invest, sit yourself down with the rules and play a few games by yourself (or with some friends or family) until you get a bit of grasp on the basic game. I promise you, you wont be dissapointed once you get the hang of it. It's a great game. Good Luck mate.
@Simple Jack yeah it can be like that sometimes I apologize for them
cant you just find a buddy and play? what i see is you just need few dices stat cards and the models and a piece of board to play on a table or floor. game shops may offer cool backgrounds but thats about it? do they have a host that does all the calculation to make it easier?
@@TomatoTomato911 oh this was a long time ago. I’m part of a whole community now.
I found game shops outside of big towns to be more inviting for new players in everything. Look up game shops in small towns and I'm sure they'll look after you :)
This is one of the best vids I've seen gets you involved without getting bogged down.
Xile79 thank you! That’s the whole idea for this!
Agreed!
This video is perfect! Easy to understand, easy to follow and the instructors are enthusiastic to be teaching. Thank you!!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it
You've played for 31 years?! Necron players and their Reanimation Protocols man...
Yep
Pretty nice, just like as if you walked into a Games Workshop for a demo...
Thank you!
This makes me want to buy a shop and sell warhammer stuff. This dude does such a good job introducing the game.
@@redzeroluevont138I'd buy your stuff lol
2:00 they move 5 inches, wow that is a pretty far movement, it’s actually incredible how LARGE the movement area of the Necron units are. Way above average I would say.
For real. I remember the first time I got to use my “long range” weapons on my guard tanks. You don’t think 36/48/72 inches is very much, until you look at it compared to the table and models.
First apocalypse size game, Baneblade spent the whole game taking shots at Tyranid heavy units from across the table, supported by a Russ squad from the other side of the table.
@@CMTechnica I feel like the joke may have flown over your head here, I wish I knew more about playing warhammer 40k but I have yet to get into it.
Best comment ever
Which ironically is not lore accurate at all, Necrons move about 6 pixels an Hour in all games, slowest ships and HORRIBLE movement penalties. However, if you're close enough that Necrons can see you, you're dead anyways
Never played 40k but the video has triggered a question in me. I guess it was done to show how close combat works, but would it strategically make sense for the Necrons to use their movement to get away from the marines instead of walking towards them?
This was the most "Welcome to the game, get f*cked by dice!" intro to the game I've ever seen and I love it. Lol Didn't touch on placing models for larger battles or picking game modes/ missions, but probably the best bare bones intro there is for the time.
I was expecting it to be more complicated but you actually broke it down pretty well!
So what I've learned from this so far is that whoever goes first gets a huge advantage
Most confusing tabletop game
Agreed
This is the most understandable video
Every other is much confusing
@@SCM-DARSHANDASHRATHPADVEKAR yes the video is good, it’s the game that I can’t get into
It’ll be less confusing if they use a better unit of measurement.
The pc games version is more understandable.
Thats an amazing explanation TY, living in latam I always asked myself how do you play.
This video should get 40k likes. 🙋🏻♂️
Poor James, the dice really did hate him :(
Good, typical video of NaTGT - short, punchy and to the point, keeps you interested. I am not so much a fan of the newer live battle reports though of late. And really cool shirt Adam.
Thank you! We’ve had to get creative with battle reports thanks to Covid.
We’re fine tuning it more and more.
Me, a teenager, finding another hobby that will drain even more money from my non-existent wallet:
Just get tabletop simulator, for like 20$ you can play this along with any other board game. Or make your own board gsmes
@@FinalCountdown-oz8pc I had it for like 2 years atp. I wanted to play irl, because painting and collecting mini's is a very big part of the hobby
Anyone else here because Space Marine 2 made them equally curious? Lol
Necrons had a human form?
First necron move breaks unit coherency (just sayin)
Yes, This was designed for absolute beginners to get the basics down. Didn't want to bog it down with things like coherency, command points, and other topics when we have plenty of short videos that touch on those.
I'm getting the game soon and have been doing Research on the rules to be prepared, but all of the guides were very complicated. I got your video suggested, and honestly didn't think one could explain everything in 10 minutes, but wow! You did it! I understood everything on the first time, and now I'm even more motivated to get into WH. Thank you so much! You got yourself a new subscriber
ngl that guy on the left looks like he could show me how to dismember a body in 10 minutes.
I'm about to head into my first ever game -- thanks for this intro and, especially, thanks for the 'gate's open come on in' approach. I get the feeling that some are intimidated by the fact that folks have been playing for decades and don't feel 'qualified' to start. It's always a good thing to share what you love.
I was a D&D/MTG/arcade kid (GenX). Always found this game fascinating, but until my sons started asking questions, I never attempted to learn. Thanks for the intro. It really helped me wrap my brain around what we might be getting into...even if this is only the tip of the iceberg. Cheers!
My only question after watching this is once a number of wounds are determined, who decides how they are distributed between the models? The attacker or defender?
You made him shoot the bolt pistols at the necrons first but gave him the AP advantage of the plasma pistol... either way glad this video has taught me to notice things like that for myself 😁
i'm not trying to sound dumb but why cant you have a computer do all the number steps and tell you the outcome in one second? It's just seems unnecessarily tedious to roll the dice and keep track of everything when a program could do it better and faster.
Omg wtf I’m an MTG player, but fuck that. I have to convert to this. Why haven I heard of this beforehand 😮😮😮😢
I can see why people are more interested in showing off their figures than showing the game actually being played. It's interesting though. Definitely requires your imagination to bring the battle to life.
Im convinced that either James is a dice wizard and manipulating them for the vid using BS magic...... or this vid was ordained to happen this way.lol
Late 70s to early 80s... Oh Emprah, why you allow such blasphemy. Down-vote-inatus!
hi just a question about 2:58, why is it 9 straight shots (9 dice)? cheers!
I really wanted to get into table top war games but after two minutes watching the video. I must say no thank you. Seems like to much work just to have fun.
4:20 But like, more than half of those Necrons are using Gauss Flayers, not Reapers.
He’s running them all as reapers for ease of use
I guess this would work but WTF? Measuring shot length with a measuring tape???
"Hello 🤗 guys today i'll show you how get in to crippling debt in 10 minutes
Perfect way to explain everything. Its not for me tho, I already think monopoly is too long lol but this is still cool I like it
I really like this but I wanna know where the strategy is if it’s just dice throws?
I still think I need 3 PHDs of Warhammer studies to even start the game.
So I’m just rolling dice and doing lots of reading and math and maybe move some guys once or twice… not sure if it’s for me
I just want to buy them as collection. It too much math for my brain.
how t
do you choose how many of each race you can place on the battleflied in each army
Oh god, why did I watch this. I don't need another damn hobby.
Cameraman is unlucky with those dices
My cousin bought me this box gonna be fun actually being able to play the game..... poor James that's how my rolling tends to work
This is a great video, and a very good way to show the basic loop every turn between two armies. It's the best time ever to learn 40K, as 9th edition is the best balanced edition yet, pretty much every race can be made into a dangerous army! If you worry about how the Necrons fared in this fight, keep in mind the host, for the sake of brevity, didn't mention a major rule the Necrons have in their favor: every time they lose any models, they repair themselves (a rule called Reanimator protocol). Basic necron warriors in particular are amazing at it: they succeed on a 5+ roll and reroll all 1s. A nearly 50% chance of reviving each model! The fight would have been much fairer in reality.
I kinda knew how to play but this made understanding the game so much easier
nice and fast(also dizzy) tour for beginers
Amazing how many in the hobby don't play the game but just love the amazing miniatures, thanks for putting this together for those trying to get up and running!
I am limited to buy print and paint where I live no one is into this
Unless I'm not understanding something, it seems like this would be a massive pay to win game. Someone could just buy a ton of models and kick my ass. Is there some rule about playing against someone with a substantially smaller army than you? Like you're limited to a certain number of points or units?
I was wondering the same
"Mmm actually its 12 minutes"🤓
Hi there, I noticed that you have painted your SM green, can we paint them any color that we wish? Not too keen on the Blue! Not played yet, hope to get a starter box soon :)
Yes. You are paying for YOUR plastic little soldiers. The only person that dictates what they should look like is YOU. While they are 'meant' to look a certain way because of the lore nothing stops you from painting them any other color if that is what you prefer. Especially with Space Marines you will also find that there are a lot of different chapters(all allied to eachother so you can think of them as allied countries if you'd like) who all use a different color scheme. As long as you don't paint anything offensive on them it should never be a problem.
can't wait for the 10th edition in 10 minutes
Im here to learn cause Henry Cavill said something about this. Anyone else?
He's making a WARHAMMER show
It’s like the easiest hardest game I’ve ever seen. I don’t even know if I wanna play anymore. I was thinking about buying a set and playing, but I don’t know what the hell is going on and I’m pretty good at following instructions.
That was great, highly informative if a bit too fast-paced, but I clicked on it because it was short so that kinda comes with the territory. I actually feel like I can play basic 40k right now. Thanks!
How did he kill 3 necrons with 2 wounds and no reanimation protocol?
no hate but sucks to not be able to turn off cc
That really helped man thanks for teaching in /10/ minutes I just got Warhammer and it’s really fun! I just played with my brother and he liked it he said,” necron warriors are good because of there sweet guns and equipment.
guy on the right looks like hes been to snake way and met the grand kai 0:02
So in the Necton turn could they move back 5inches and hope to shoot the marines again or is just simply close combat till someone is dead
I think that move is called fall back and if they fall back then they cannot shoot in the same battle round
And I thought women where difficult to grasp
Lol
I had been watching video how to play and you explained better just actually playing 10min 😂 I’m jumping back to 40k used yo play when I was 16 now I’m 33 just bought the command edition 🔥I used to had the Chaos Space Marine
Let me start out by saying, great video. Really concise and easy to understand demonstration of the state of gameplay.
Rules critique:
I feel like the "saving throw" is redundant, and doesn't really make sense. If you roll to hit, then roll to wound, why roll for armor saves?
Also, should the defender should be able to allocate wounds? It's like magic the gathering, with the defender being able to determine who takes the damage. It makes combat more interactive, at the cost of taking some initiative away from the player. The result would be all 5 SM's alive, but 4 of them wounded. It makes more sense, because it allows the player to shoot back more effectively.
I feel like on a bigger scale it would be harder to track ig.
Awesome I'm gonna send this to my friends and make them start collecting 40K!
kokevinny nice! Did you sign up to get our emails? If you do you get entered into a drawing to receive a start collecting box!
Where can a buy the unit book
12 minutes actually
I finally understand WH40k. Always thought it was some needlessly complex RTS game and I couldn't figure out how that would translate to dice rolls. Video really made everything click into place. Now I want to play it.
It was cause of this video I got back into 40k
What determines which warriors are taken off the board? It can't be just random, i reckon.
Also, is there a grid board of some kind used (akin to chess) or what? Cause it also makes
it unclear when or which units are in range for an attack. As soon as only one figure gets in
range? Two? Five? A certain percentage of the whole squad? Starting distance? Does it even
exist or matter?
This video helped to illustrate the rolling system, and more or less how the battle is going, but
as for the game's rules and procedural cycle - it left me in a grey area between understanding
nothing and having too many unclear things and more questions.
Was given around £300 worth of warhammer 40k stuff by a grateful customer who works at GW Nottingham. I've now gone down the rabbit hole with my eldest son and just trying to learn to play. Great tutorial that.
I dunno... necrons are now in rapid fire range, so that's 14 chances to hit. They dropped 2 Marines at range.. it's very possible they shred those Marines before it goes back to their turn
Granted, had James not gotten cursed with such awful rolls, 5 Marines v 10 necrons would normally be a necron massacre, but that's why we use dice. They are the best way to simulate all of the things that can go sideways in life. Like a bolter jam, just plain having a bad day, etc.
Like the Battle of Midway still being studied and debated nearly 100 years later because some of our brightest tactical minds are not confident they could achieve victory with the same conditions, sometimes everything lines up just right, or just wrong, and the battle turns out vastly different than expected.
If you ever want to convince someone NOT to paly W40k so him this video ...
It literally does not say what the titles says (butvthats understandable) but most important it makes W40k sound/looks something you need to avoid...
Two times i tried to see this video in the last 4 months....both times i stoped at the 4 min mark, digusted and disappointed...
This is an overly complicated version of Star Craft made into a board game.
Just found this video now, as wanting to play.. Looking through your videos... where have you gone?
That’s an absolutely awesome vid. Well done. Super useful
Really want to try playing but living in a third world country makes it hard to buy models or even play with people....so sticking to lore and RUclips videos my bet
“Necrons sacrificed their HUMAN forms”……..he meant their dying necronter flesh
Thank you for this.
I'm looking to build my first army soon, and it's... daunting, to say the least lol. You've made an excellent jump off point for gameplay here!
I learned the lore, enjoyed the hell out of it, but never played with miniatures. I played a campaign of the 40k ttrpg Wrath and glory, and some of the videogames (currently playing Mechanicus, so far my favorite).
The miniatures thing never really caught my attention
Im buying my first car early tomorrow and I'm watching how to play warhammer, ALL MY FRIENDS ARE DIE HARD DND
Love the models, the process of putting them together but eveytime i have try to play with others nobody really want to teach anyone since i don't fully understand how to, it just horrible as a beginner.
I took my kids to the shop to play and build. Hours of fun! It was a sad day once these shops all closed by us. My legion of the damned was painted to perfection and was praised by everyone.
Thanks for the tutorial!! You made a very complex set of rules digestible enough to become one of my new favorite hobbies 😊
“My necrons don’t stand a chance!”…
Reanimation protocol
💀💀💀💀💀💀💀
I've never played the Tabletop version, but I remember from the PC version (Dawn of War) that necrons can reanimate. Did they skip that or is there a rule that they could not do that here?
4:36 "FuCk" XD
Question: How do you determine which units actually take the hits? Why did those two space marines take all four hits, instead of spreading the hits out one per space marine?
Warhammer would be cooler if it was a role playing game like DnD
Wow! I did not know Warhammer 40 000 was such a vast universe! I'm more of a gamer so I'll try out the video games first but this was such an Amazing and informative watch!
Yeah... This is from 2020. My guy, these measuring tapes can get dropped for contact surface touchscreens that automeasure. Tracking dots on terrain and units will reveal angles and line of sight. RFID chips mean you can touch a UI on the screen or on a linked display and get data on anything on the table.
This tech is... rather dated. Measuring tapes? Relying on 2" tall models to tell you their stats based on what they look like? There are so many barriers to this being engaging, and then there's a near-monopoly on minis? I gotta be real, y'all are getting hustled here. The investment in a 3D printer and some PLA would save you 10's of thousands of dollars to just print everything with built-in display features. I'm just gonna get to core rules and run it without all this archaic extra nonsense, I think.
I should not have clicked on this video after a 10-hour workday... lot of numbers, brain not taking info...
I do like that 9th edition is simpler, but wtf is this bullshit??? 5 Astartes would never have a chance against 10 Necrons back in my day! 4th edition is still my favorite. I'll stick with that.
wtf
I had absolutely no idea how on earth would you play this game.
After watching your tutorial. I'm confident I could play a match if I had that book. :D
Great explanation! However, you cut the timer short even though you were still explaining. Next time don't advertise under 10 minutes if you can't provide it.
So its p2w game? Who can buy more and better figures will win? Or there are limits?
