    • @SwitchTalkChannel

@@grumbo8634 You're either lying or a confused fearmonger if you think you need to be upper-middle class. Also, studies show that about 40% of people are middle class in England right now. Same for America. Anybody in middle class can easily afford GW. If you adjust for inflation, GW prices are not too far beyond where they should be, if you judge by 2006-ish prices, for example. Depending on how you define 'sustainable', you can create a full army, paints, and PDF file, etc. for 10th edition in just one year, costing about $/£600. That's decent for all middle classes and a fair amount of the working class. Already, average hobbies cost about $/£300 per year if you look at many studies for things like sports clubs and video games. I saw a study that showed the average UK child spends £500 per year on their main hobby. Unless you have many other costs in life, you can easily justify £500 per year if you include Christmas gifts and such, too (which is not uncommon). That only makes it about £30 per month, which is already the standard for things like video games and TV subs across pretty much all society and classes.
Granted, if you cannot do £500 per year, then you will struggle. But, if you just want one army forever, then you only have to do this for one year, not every year. Following this logic, you might just need to spend 2 years building your army, and that's the end of it. That means, you only need about £250 per year. That's easy for almost everybody in the main GW countries (England, America, France, Canada, etc.).
I know this because I spend about £500 per year on my hobbies overall (not just GW, to be clear) and I'm poor. But, I don't have iPhones or anything, nor PS5, etc. So, if you have 2+ hobbies, then you will struggle with GW, but that's your choice/fault, and has nothing to do with GW prices. Clearly, I have a Switch. That's quite costly, but it's decent, over a 12-month period. It's all about where you want to put your money.
If you mean, 2+ big armies, and endless paints, etc., then you're looking at £500+ per year, for sure. 10th edition should be a bit cheaper than 9th, overall, but who knows. Either way, if we just say you want £800 per year, that's still within the range of the middle classes, let alone upper-middle classes. You just proved that you don't know anything about average incomes or UK spending habits. I bet the U.S. is not really any different. The upper-middle classes have like £50,000+ per year. The lower-middle classes have about £30,000. That's actually really good these days. That's many millions of people. 10% of UK have £10,000 per year (lower class, etc.) and 10% have £70,000 (upper class). That itself is millions of people. That means, about 70% of UK population has income between £20,000 and £60,000. That's almost middle class to the very top of upper-middle class. That's like 42 million people.
Note: If you're in AU, CA, or otherwise nation, then you may have issues, almost entirely due to shipment tax, etc. But, if you judge from UK/base prices, it's not too much of an issue. It's no worse than supporting your PS5 collection or Golf club, or even 4k Blu-ray collection.
In short: your statement would be correct if you said, 'anybody in the UK lower-middle class or above has no problem creating a massive GW collection, with only a small percentage (20%?) of the working classes struggling with the hobby'. Of course, a large percentage of them already have their spare income taken care of, but that's a choice they made, and has no bearing on GW prices. You choose to have an iPhone, or a car, or a PS5, or a Netflix sub, or a problem with smoking or drinking, or a costly dog, and/or gym sub. Many GW fans spend ALL their money on GW, so it's a non-issue for them, almost regardless of income.
The only way your comment makes any sense, is if you mean, 'a man with 3 kids, 2 cars, a fairly typical job, dogs, smoking, TV subs, and other hobbies struggles to collect massive amounts of plastic from GW'. Well, you're likely right about that, but that's not what you said. And, that still doesn't prove that GW prices are too high. Nobody ever claimed that you should be able to have 2+ hobbies and still buy Warhammer. Nowhere is that written. GW prices are largely determined by the market, and it seems to be going fine (it is a bit beyond where it should be, once you adjust for inflation, but there are about five reasons for that, only one of them is greed. Of course, it's not a crime for a company to be greedy. It's literally their job, or one of their jobs).
P.S. It's innately a luxury hobby. It's tiny plastic men, which requires great talent and resources, and a lot of spare time on the player's end. Nothing about this screams, 'natural right' or 'working classes'. It's like Golf: it's made for rich people with a lot of free time. There is no reason to assume that the entry should be extremely low. I don't even understand how that could work. Golf doesn't have low entry. It has a club system, it demands certain sportsmanship, and a great deal of support (millions per year at the better courses, which already cost 10+ million to build). On top of that, you have to spend a lot of money on specialised tools (clubs and gear). It's impossible for Warhammer to be much cheaper; otherwise, it would be under the inflation rate, which makes no sense. Following this logic, you think GW prices should have been low from the very beginning. If you look at 2005 prices, they were very high, adjusted for inflation. You have to put it into full context, and also take into account the wider market, and where you're spending your money. You're just demanding that they cut their profits, so you can buy cheaper models. Why would they do that? Ideally, I want the large boxsets to be £40, instead of £100. But, £40 in 2005 would be about £80 today. That means, they wouldn't really see profits, which they require for all their workers, new designs, new games, events, novels/library, moulds, artists, stores, shipment, and otherwise.
Unless you just mean, it should be £80 for a big set instead of £100. That's fair, but it still begs the question: why is £80 acceptable if £100 isn't? It's only £20 extra for an entire hobby/army/game, that can last you years. What people really mean is, 'I want big sets to be £50, like they used to be'. That's just delusional. At best, you can get them for about £60 (which is where they were at in about 2012-ish), which would crush their profits, so you cannot demand they do that. Is it 'too much', though? The market decides that, not me or you. You can only say, 'I'm unwilling to pay for it'. That's fine. Don't buy it, then. You cannot demand they sell it cheaper just because you want to buy it for cheaper. That's not how it works.

I've been familiarising myself with the core rules/indexes of the armies I'll be running, and even had a friend take me through a practice round or two in Tabletop Sim. With that small amount of experience and having played games similar to this in the past (D&D etc.) I'm fairly confident I could carry out a game - with the rules/indexes nearby of course - but it's really nice to see it played out step by step and explained properly in practice.

Awesome video overall! It helps that you explained the rules as you went along. While the energy was pulled back, one could tell that you two were having fun.
    Couple of critiques:
-The AP system feels simple to understand for us veterans of 40k. However, saying “this is AP -2 which makes my 2+ save a 4+ save” confuses those who are new. I know it’s a shorthand we use but for an intro video, you could say something like “AP modifies the dice roll, not the characteristic. Rolling a 2 against an AP -2 weapon turns that save roll into a 0. So I need to roll a 4 or higher to pass my armor save.” You’d only need to mention it once and people would be able to catch on.
-Army rules and stratagems are extra layers that are fun and flavorful but for an intro video, it can create confusion because you’re trying to explain how the game works. I recommend mentioning them but not using them to keep the flow moving from phase to phase.
Keep up the great work and thanks for the content!!

I've customized a few Warhammer figures for friends, but have never learned how to play. Thanks for a great, easy to understand explanation. I can't for the life of me figure out why instead of using tape measures, the game table isn't set up with some kind of grid though, allowing each unit's movement and attack to be based on spaces instead of inches.
