- Опубликовано: 3 янв 2017
- Thank you to everyone who supported and encouraged us in this project! We are very happy with the end result, and are finding it to be a nice cozy full time home on wheels. Feel free to comment any questions regarding the build and I will do my best to answer!
FAQ's answered:
Regarding the high top: It is a fiberglass aftermarket high top, that was on the van when we bought it. It was 6'5 interior height pre-build, it is 6'2-3 post-build
Regarding Cost: The Van (2005 Chevy Express 3500 w/ high top, 110,000 km) was 10,000 CAD and the build cost was 6,500 CAD for all materials. We found many parts used or free which cut the build cost substantially, but added time and effort in sourcing and cleaning parts.
Regarding Van Life:
Showers can be found at rec centers, gyms, pools, and hotels.
Toilets can be found at all of the above plus any restaurant or large store... Pretty much anywhere you are, there is toilet very close by.
Wifi can be found at coffee shops, restaurants, outside large stores, and at the houses of charitable friends :)
I really like the idea of a folding [hideaway] table. Great job!
Pullup bar.. Brilliant! Thanks for sharing.
It's great how you get straight to the point without a long winded introduction. So refreshing. Thanks!
And then the fireplace. Great job dude!
The magnetic cabinet door idea is brilliant 😁
I literally got do happy bc of that
I've been trying to figure out simple lift cabinets and the magnet idea solved a major problem I've been having. Thank you!
the best. thanks for sharing
Your Van modiifications look very functional and very cozy. Great job.
Simplicity !! "MAGNETS" Great job on the build.
Extremely nice. Thnx for sharing.
Nice work Phillip and Amy! You really utilized the space well.
Great work, I really like the up-cycle paneling and the solar panel.
awesome build! those magnets were a great idea!
Very nice van well done! Thanks for sharing.
Loved the van and loved that you have a heater!
Yeah, going to be real happy to have it in a month!
Awesome setup! I added this to one of my playlists for cool van builds!
Of all the van designs I've seen this one is best.
Thank you very much! 'best' is relative to who it's for, but for us it's perfect :)
I LOVE the fireplace! Definitely something I was curious about. Love the shelf in the back. Also, girlfriend is a lucky lady.
Great looking build-out!!!
I love you Phil, continually surprising and impressing me. Nice travel pad/love nest/home away from home!
Thank you Liz! Although, it is in fact both of our full time homes... everything both of us owns fits in there :)
Really like the van buddy. Keep it up.
supper cool van. Looks super cool. Keep it up man!!!

Very very nice !!!
You guys did a great job.
Nicely done....
Wow, really awesome build... 🌞🌞🌞
Very well done. Nice job.
Beautiful van build
Cool van dude and FairPlay to you doing it yourself as I know how difficult it is ,especially not being square anywhere I completely know what you mean! I’m in the process of doing my own van conversion right now🚌👍
Great personality and liked that stove. You didn't mention the toilet options.
very nice!
I love your set-up dude
I love it!
Awesome van Build I love the set up the garage at the back and the magnets one the ceiling and your subbed
Thank you! Very happy with the result of both concepts :)
Dude!....Awesome rig!
Catan? Take my upvote.TAKE IT!
Great conversion! Perfect mobile ski chalet, love the fireplace/heater! Some details I especially appreciate: Coping the T&G up under the cabinets so you don't have the edge hanging there to whack your forehead... Garage BIG gear drawer and ski storage cubbies... the "mud room" rubber floor at the entry (smart!)... swivel seats and multipurpose recycle/ottoman/step-stool. Remarkably good job for beginners, you clearly invested a lot of time into planning and thinking thru what you wanted.
Hi Billder, thanks for the kind words! Indeed each of these things were planned and were a pain in the ass to implement (as novice builders) haha. All the best!
Good work ( Go Dad ) very good van camper tour.
You guys did a Great Job!
Nice
Thanks for the video. Any Social media links to follow you?
Hi Phillip, really great job y'all did on your home! I like it. No potty? Take care and stay strong!
1:43 - engraved brass table top looks Persian. Nice touch. Your girlfriend must be Persian too.
You should explain some of the materials used in countertop, and tell us brand of fridge, how it is powered, thickness of cabinet wood panels, etc. Nice to know how it was built.
The stove looks lovely, and is a high end one. It is however, right up against the bed, 6 inches away from fabric bedding, a serious fire hazard. I would put some insulating material between stove and bed as soon as possible. There should be a hefty clearance around stove. If you choose to bypass this safety zone, then use an effective barrier. Ceramic or firebrick tiles mounted on wood panel should work. My house burned down due to an electrical fire due to negligence by previous owner. Don't underestimate a fire hazard.
You may want to get a Porta-Potty and encase it like a rolling stool for a leg rest. Nice to have one. Put your recycling in garage. Also, get a small solar pump for your sink, it will be so nice to have easy running water.
Well done on the low budget build, very creative and functional. Looks like a cozy travel home for you both! Be sure to visit Big Sur in California, and drive on Pacific Coast Highway all the way from Carmel to Los Angeles. If you head back, take 101 and see all the CA historic old Spanish Missions. Each one gives you a slice of California history. Bon Voyage!
great ideas, good job. you might puts some wood blocks under your sink cover to lock the in place.
Hi Bob, the sink cover is indeed precisely carved to stay in place!
Thanks for sharing your ideas! I would love to know where you got your high top cover. I don't know where to go for that other than a body shop which will install it for you...:-(
Very neat, where is the potty?
Ok, ive been looking for some real insight on the swivel seat. I like dot rated ones. They have a 2" offset. Does this destory the leg room with the engine tunnel? I dont think i could sit in the passenger seat if it was 2in toward van center
The magnets and cabinet door/ table are fantastic! Great work with the build.
I'm still on the fence about spray foam vs foam board... any thoughts or updates you'd like to provide?
Thanks! I would go with spray foam again on every future project. I've heard of people having moisture / mold problems due to using rigid insulation, where spray foam is an all in one insulator and moisture barrier.
I saw BC plates.. say no more, take my subscription
I've got a 97 Chevy Express high top that's been converted also. Where did you get the hardware for the swivel front seats?
Love the van - great inspiration for our own. Thanks for sharing. May I ask which fridge you got? Trying to figure the biggest compressor fridge we can find to fit in between the seat and the wheelwell. b
Its a waeco 12v minifridge bought second hand... came out of a semi truck cab!
Six weeks is a pretty quick turnaround time for redoing the interior of your van given that every piece of wood had to be custom cut, no assembly line type of cutting, since you had no real expertise in construction. It looks like it will be quite comfy, cozy, and snug with the added insulation and the wood and stuff. If I were a high school shop teacher, I'd give you a definite "A"😉
Haha, Thanks!
if you going to live in it 24\7 you need it
Where did you get that top? I have an AWD express that I am fitting out now. Really like that you got rid of the black door cards on the back barn doors.
Nice homey feel all around, you are ready for Baja!
Thank you! Glad to have a woman with me on the project because I was going to leave those on! Have a great day :)
Did the roof come raised or was that done for the camper conversion? I'm hoping to get a similar Chevy Express but don't see much of the taller (standing room) roofs. Thanks.
Thanks for sharing. What are you using for a bed - what is the mattress? Do you have a porto-potty system?
Hi roger. Using an ikea foam mattress and no portopotty system, just a piss jar 👌
Thanks for the great walkthrough! I'm curious: how tall are you, and how much interior standing room do you have? How tall is the extended roof?
Thanks!
Hi Adam, I am 6'1 and the total height is 6'2 and a bit. Not sure the exact height of the pop top as it was already on when we bought it.
What's the height inside? Floor to ceiling. And what size hightop did you get?
Hey Phillip, I love the van build and was looking to do something similar! Is that a standard length or the extended length Express? You were able to do so much with the space! thanks
Hi Benjamin. It is 11'6" from behind the driver seat to the back door. Not sure if that's extended or not. Good luck!
Nice build. Any before pictures?
Yup! It's just an empty cargo van though.
Nice job! Question: What did you use for the front seat swivel? I have a similar van and am looking for a good option. Thanks.
I got mine from shop4seats.com. I do not reccomend this option though as their service was terrible. Good luck!
Thanks for the reply and the link. I've seen other reports from people who've used the same swivel base, but from different suppliers. All of which had similarly bad service. But as far as how well it works, what's your report? From what I understand, the base raises the seat 2" and moves it inboard by 2". I'm just wondering how that is for passenger riding comfort.
Awesome job. Does the heater work well? curious because I would like to buy one.
Yes, the heater keeps the place warm enough down to -10c for sure. Only downside is everything below the unit stays alot colder. A forced air unit could be on floor level and have a thermostat, but no fireplace...
great custom build but what do u do for shower and toilet? 12volt water sink pump would be better and heater stove is ok but no thermostat huh? poor mike from livingfree is freezing.
Showers at pools, climbing gyms, rec centers. Toilets in every building in North America. Hand pump helps conserve water. Heater is warm in sub 0 and great ambiance!
Awesome build, did you guys get the hightop put on there, and if so I was wondering what company you used or did you buy it with the hightop installed already?
Already installed. Good luck!
Is the box where your deep cycle batteries installed vented? idk but I have heard that they need to be, but I have no knowledge of that, so I'm just curious
Hi Patricia, Good question!
I have AGM batteries, which do not off gas when charging and do not need to be vented. Normal flooded batteries would need to be vented though.
Fantastic build . what is the name of your furnace?
dickinson marine p12000
I've been researching spray foam insulation to use for my high top van as well, some say that over time, the spray foam's adhesive will break away from the fiberglass top, thus leaving an air gap and will cause condensation in between it. Did the company that did the job tell you anything about that being an issue?
They didn't mention anything about that, but good to know!
Cool mini fridge. What kind is it?
Older Waeco 12v minifride pulled out of a semi truck
Can you tell me which type of seat swivel base you used? I am searching for one for my '05 Express 3500, and I'm not sure which one to go with.
Hi there, I got mine from shop4seats .com. Make sure you get the right bolt pattern. I wouldn't recommend buying from them though because the service was terrible and it didn't come for 2 months. Good luck!
Somebody needs to come up with a light substitute for wood paneling on the walls. The warmth of wood has no equal. The weight must kill gas millage,
I was thinking 1/4 inch masonite paneling would work. I am not convinced that the wood cladding has all that much insulation by itself.
How high is yer high-top?
Guessing you've found showers at truckstops since posting this. Little handheld CB and some trucker will always have a shower on their card if ya just ask. For free.
Cooldealdude but spray foam is a big no for this type
hows the fuel efficiency on that van fully loaded?
Its brutal! Expensive road trips. Haha
How much was the spray foam job?
200. great deal!
hi, where did u get the fireplace?
they are boat heaters, kimberlys are nice as well a lot of van dwellers use them
Dickinson Marine is the company that makes them (it's a P12000), but I found this one used on craigslist :)
Why no bathroom?
Would love one! Just not sure where it would go...
Great video!!! when is the first trip? just sub'd you looking forward to more God Bless
Thank you! Been on the road since november now :)
Nice van, PLEASE dispose of your gray water properly.
sorry I have to disagree with the others who said great video, it left more questions than answers. Solar system, what is that you have, what controller and why, batteries series or parallel why, inverter?, toilet shower bed size chairs for table fire extinguisher carbon monoxide detector new/old van raised roof water proofing roof exhaust pipe through roof how do you get on the roof is the fire place rated for a van. you started with pulling out the the drawer part way closing it and shutting the back doors wow, I learned zero, of course I learned something, and I thank you, but you didn't really do your van Justice, so much not said that an update would be in order, not trying to be mean but keeping it real
Because you need a fireplace in California
Needs a lot more work
