My mind is blown. I remember watching Tim in his first videos, all nervous. Now look at him! Truly amazing Tim, thanks! What a bad ass video this is and so helpful. Skipping like that, smooth as butter! Once again, thanks Tactical Bassin for the awesome videos and making my life just that much better!!
I just learned to skip lures a few weeks ago. The biggest help for me I only saw mentioned once in all the different videos I've watched on skipping. Leave about 2 to 2.5 feet of line out between your lure and the rod tip. It's sounds and looks like too much, but it's not. Try in a few times and see if it works, it made all the difference for me.
I skip docks a lot here in Tennessee. I had two custom spinning rods built that their whole purpose is skipping. Both are 7 foot medium action rods, one has an extremely fast tip because I like to skip a variety of Baits weightless ( worms, creatures and crawls) the second is just a fast tip for skipping jigs and swimbaits. In Tournaments I can move a lot quicker with the spinning rods and no worries of a backlash if I make a bad skip. I use Lew’s 30 Crush Mach spinning reels on both. Spinning rods may not be everyone’s choice but they work well for me for both speed and accuracy especially when you’re searching for that last good cull late in a Tournament.
Wow Tim, mind blown! This video is heads and shoulders above any other video on the subject of skippin docks! Tactical Bassin has definitely become my #1 source for fishing info, and for good reason....you and Matt are the best fishing instructors on RUclips. That being said...one view and this is already my favorite video from Tactical Bassin! Your technique, instruction skills and technical prowess makes me want to drop what I am doing and go skip some docks! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Thanks Tim. Never done it. Still learning some other techniques and I don't have a boat. I watch you guys a lot. You-all taught me to fish. I have about 75 days of real studious fishing experience. My PB is my profile picture.
Finally a video on skipping!!! I am going to practice this till I get it now. Very interesting on which baits you mentioned skip better than others, I would have though a stick bait would be harder to skip being that it’s pretty floppy. I will use the tape method till I get it down pretty good. Great idea by the way, who would have thought there would be training wheels in bass fishing!!
Great video Tim with good info as always. Those shots with the camera at water level, under the dock were so cool. More importantly, to me they showed better than the camera shots from behind you, that your bait was hitting the water well in front of the dock and skipping 2 or 3 times before finally going under the dock. Really well done. And as has already been mentioned I appreciate the tip about adding tape to the spool at a normal cast distance to keep from messing up all your line when learning to skip.
Remarkable! Tim you are awesome at skipping. Thanks for the electrical tape suggestion, that's worth two thumbs up! Great information, love this video!
Phenomenal!!! What an incredible shot from the dock skipping all the different lures. I can not say it enough. You guys are great and Thank you for all you do.
Dammit Tim you make this technique look so easy. I know when I practice on the driveway at my house with my baitcaster I'll prolly make a temporary home for the Bald Eagle pair that live in my neighborhood with the huge bird nest I know I'm getting. Wifey just bought me a brand new Shimano Curado DC yesterday and I hope that will minimize the bird nesting.
YES IVE BEEN ASKING FOR THIS!!! I’ve known you guys have been skipping swimbaits and just didn’t know in what instances you would! Great video guys, best fishing page on RUclips BY FAR!
Great video Tim !! Been looking at a lot of videos on this technique and after years of fishing, I need to put this in my arsenal of "moves." This is one of the best I've seen on RUclips so far. You keep it really simple. Practice is key on anything. BTW .... look at the homes with ramps right to the lake !!! How cool is that?! :-)
These videos are super excellent ,Great for the fisherman ! I’m like all the other people that follow you guys ,super great videos excellent knowledge you guys are awesome!
i needed this tip 3 years ago. lol. was fishing some docks with a ton of fish and i couldn't get in to them...Of course thatschanged now, but Im sure it's be helpful to many anglers, new and experienced. Awesome job!
My problem is i'm short. So I have to use shorter rods than most people do just so I can get a good angle to start skipping. I'm still learning it and you video is great! Part of my problem is I am trying to start my skip to far out. I'll start practicing beginning the skip closer to my boat. Thanks for taking time to show us this!
Bad ass video. I loved the slow mo skipping. Skipping docks with a spinning rod is something I do on the regular being a saltwater angler. But a baitcaster has been difficult. Did it couple times without trying then was able to replicate with a chatterbait. But I will definitely be using the tape trick. Again, awesome video
This is definitely something I need to work on. I could've skipped on some big bed fish this year that were in tight spots. Thinking about getting a curado DC just for skipping.
Daiwa Tatula hands down. The Mag Force Z magnet is killer for skipping. You can dial it in so fine, it's amazing. You can get the previous model 100HS on eBay for less than $100 now.
I skip pretty well, but no where near as well as Tim! Excellent video! Practice Practice Practice! Its all time on the water. Thanks for the great videos, keep it up
Skirtless buzzbaits and GMan Ballin Out jig, set up the way the man himself fishes, are what I would recommend to learn on using a baitcaster. They've been some of the easiest lures to skip.
I’ve always wanted to master skipping a bait caster but was always worried of bird nesting the reel but ima try it with the electrical tape tip and see how things go
Good stuff. Watching another video on skipping they mentioned slightly raising the rod tip as the bait begins to skip. Looked like that was happening here to, right? Also, no mention of how close the bait should be to the rod (doubt you want a foot+ of line hanging off the tip)... thoughts?
Great how to video. Well done. Do you think you could do a video on pitching and flipping? Found a few, but the person casting wasn't in the video -- pretty useless.
Great video. Going to start trying to skip. You and Allen should come to Los Banos since your in California. There's lots of water and different conditions. The bass are different in each one. I've caught 7lbs but the locals say there are double digit beasts out here.
Question. Are you thumbing the cast the whole time or just when you need it to stop. My problem is getting it to skip so many times before it stops. Am I over thumbing the spool or what?
I'm not good at skipping. I've been successful a few times but mostly not. I'm going to put your tip on the electrical tape to use. Thanks for the instruction, Tim!
Can you talk about etiquette. Dock snags. Rules of the water/shore. As a cottage owner , hate finding lures and hooks in harms way of grandkids and bass skippers long gone . Four tourneys a week gets real old on our lake.
Mad skills, loved watching this. Quick quesion, I am in the market for a swimbait rod for my 8" Hudds and the like and was curious if you would recommend the Dobyns champion XP 806 or 807? Thanks!
Loved the video! You guys should try the googan baits and give your opinion on them, I'm curious about these baits and wonder what you guys would think.
Great job! Your a dead aim and called those shots...wow. I need to get some practice in on this. I've done it but I'm not even close to that good..lol. I just use the few rods I already have 7'6 for everything but plan on getting more stuff soon.
Tim, you guys always say let it fall on a semi slack line. What specifically does that mean? How do you know you aren't altering the bait when you start picking up slack?
The semi slack line is so the bait falls straight down where it landed. Tension in the line will cause it to fall at an angle towards your rod, taking you away from the location you were casting at.
I understand that any tension on the line alters the fall. I guess what I'm having an issue with is immediately after the bait enters the water, I want to keep contact with the bait. In order to do that I either have to raise my rod tip or peal line off the real. This is in hopes of getting the bait to fall naturally without a pendulum motion. I always either end up with slack line or too much contact with the bait altering the fall.
Your goal is to "keep contact withthe bait" so are you wanting to keep contact with the bait specifically for the falls presentation or to feel a bite during the fall? Honestly either one is just gonna take more practice brother. Every cast for me doesnt work out Every time either. Good luck!
What are the buzzbaits and trailers you can skip? I already throw the Zorro Headknocker on your recommendation. That buzzbait puts fish in my kayak. Period! Thanks Tim and Matt! Tight lines!!!
Any of the skirtless variants with a keitech or horny toad. They seriously fly; the hardest part is making sure you're accounting to make it out the other side of the dock and not to hit it on a float or post on the way.

Hey guys, DaveyJones here with tactical bassin today we are gonna talk about skipping.
*flings bait into tree*
The production quality of these videos is insane. Really well thought out and executed. And dam you are a ninja skipper!
Damn Tim those were some bad ass skips dude! That swimbait looked super cool sliding across the water like that!
That electrical tape tip is amazing, so simple I can't believe I hadn't thought of it before.. Once again tactical bassin coming through 👍
that under the dock skip slomo camera shot was fire
I love that you hit the camera on that last cast! Awesome video and great tips. Never tried skipping before but I'm definitely gonna practice this.
Love the slow motion video of skipping baits under the dock! One even hit the camera .. a true master angler ... precision at its finest! ;)
Thanks Tim. Never done it. Still learning some other techniques and I don't have a boat. I watch you guys a lot. You-all taught me to fish. I have about 75 days of real studious fishing experience. My PB is my profile picture.

You're guys tips and editing are top notch. My favourite fishing channel on RUclips.
Remarkable! Tim you are awesome at skipping. Thanks for the electrical tape suggestion, that's worth two thumbs up! Great information, love this video!

This is probably hands down the best skipping tutorial you can actually see a proper skip cast
Great video! as a beginner to bass fishing, I have tried skipping a few times (with alot of backlashes) These tips will really help.
Under the dock cam with slow mo shot of stick bait coming at it- sweeeeeet shot!
YES IVE BEEN ASKING FOR THIS!!! I’ve known you guys have been skipping swimbaits and just didn’t know in what instances you would! Great video guys, best fishing page on RUclips BY FAR!

Great video! Camera angle was awesome, bait looked great skipping across the water!
Thanks Tim
These videos are super excellent ,Great for the fisherman ! I’m like all the other people that follow you guys ,super great videos excellent knowledge you guys are awesome!
MAN!! I loved that slow motion under the dock.. ived used something like that in my videos but you took it to another level. Spot on performance.
Talent. Clear results from spending time on the water. Great vid Tim!
i needed this tip 3 years ago. lol. was fishing some docks with a ton of fish and i couldn't get in to them...Of course thatschanged now, but Im sure it's be helpful to many anglers, new and experienced. Awesome job!
Even though i mastered skipping back in the 1990s... This was refreshing to watch :)
Epic surface footage guys. Love that slow-mo.
Thank you for this video. Just started Bass Fishing and trying to learn all the tricks I can.
Just what I needed to see. I'll practice these techniques. Thanks for posting Tim.
Awesome video! One of the rare videos that are epic without any fish being caught! Btw, awesome camera under the dock too!
Some of the coolest footage I've seen and it is just in a tutorial not even some show off highlight compilation
Tim, you are a stud! Great video. I am going to start practicing this.
Thank you very much!
So impressed with the production of this video had to watch it twice ! LOL.. just as impressed the second time around.
Tim you're like a sniper bro! Great vid. Needed this!
This is my favorite channel to watch always such good information
Amazing content and the footage is awesome. Tim you are a skipping master. I frickin love it.
Great video, great information and even better camera shots. Love the reverse angle watching the lure coming at you. Freakin amazing.
Those camera angles were sick Tim, nice skips!
Amazing shot there...like throwing a hardball into the strike zone
That was pretty good Tim, hit the camera with both baits, no better way to drive your point home then that #awesome.....love it
love the close up footage of the skips. nice.
thanks for the tip on not backlashing the whole spool with a piece of tape.
Also a good tip. If you can afford a Curado DC turn it to 4 and go to town. Its changed my fishing for the better.
Great video. Definitely gonna practice skipping docks out my Kayak more.
That first skip was legendary. Wow
@@DrZiggyzoo1 I actually have 3 tats, and 1 ct. They are impressive for 160 and under for sure
Awesome vid! Can y’all make a video on how to skip from all directions? Back hand, and pitch skipping?
Good info I skip docks at lake of the ozarks if you don’t fill your reel up to the top of spool it will help prevent those birds nest
Thanks for this one Tim. Been needing something like this.
Great video, I love skipping docks and these tips will help me perfect it.
skipping is going to be so helpful at the lake i fish at. I shore fish too, so itll help alot!
Awesome slow mo. Nice shooting.
You got mad skills, bro
That tape idea is super smart!
Great video. Ive never heard about that tape trick before. Good stuff.
Great tips Tim. Thanks for the video.
Thank you Tim! Great video that will help me add that to my arsenal!!!
I’ve always wanted to master skipping a bait caster but was always worried of bird nesting the reel but ima try it with the electrical tape tip and see how things go
I have to say that is some impressive skipping! Thanks for the tips! I've been wanting to learn to do this.
Tims got mad skills!!
Just wondering, what gear ratio do you recommend for that size swim bait you were skipping ??? Thanks
Good stuff. Watching another video on skipping they mentioned slightly raising the rod tip as the bait begins to skip. Looked like that was happening here to, right? Also, no mention of how close the bait should be to the rod (doubt you want a foot+ of line hanging off the tip)... thoughts?
Get info as always
Do have any advice on skipping from a kayak
Can you guys do a review on the defiant swimbait
Just sweet Tim all I can say!! And thanks for the tips!
Great how to video. Well done. Do you think you could do a video on pitching and flipping? Found a few, but the person casting wasn't in the video -- pretty useless.
Tim with that HEAVY intro!!!!
Sick camera angle
Awesome skipping tips man!!! Thank you so much!
Dobyns Fury 795 or 806 for huddleston 68 and maybe some 8 inch hudds in the future? but mostly for huddleston 68
Great video. Going to start trying to skip. You and Allen should come to Los Banos since your in California. There's lots of water and different conditions. The bass are different in each one. I've caught 7lbs but the locals say there are double digit beasts out here.
Matt caught a DD out of the creek years ago but havent been back in a long time.
TacticalBassin it would be awesome and a chance to give out some great information.
Question. Are you thumbing the cast the whole time or just when you need it to stop. My problem is getting it to skip so many times before it stops. Am I over thumbing the spool or what?
You're a good teacher bro love you're vids
Excellent Video!! Ninja skippa Tim. 9.8/10 only thing that could've made it better is hooking up with a Donkey or Pig. Great Job
I'm not good at skipping. I've been successful a few times but mostly not. I'm going to put your tip on the electrical tape to use. Thanks for the instruction, Tim!
I was wondering the same thing, how many takes did it take
If only I had dock to skip. Lol I do have over hanging trees which I can apply this. And the tape idea might be useful!
You don't need just docks. I skip into over hanging trees too.
Open water skipping can be good too especially around schooling fish.
Beast mode!!💪
OUTSTANDING FOOTAGE!
Can you talk about etiquette. Dock snags. Rules of the water/shore. As a cottage owner , hate finding lures and hooks in harms way of grandkids and bass skippers long gone . Four tourneys a week gets real old on our lake.
Best Channel out there keep up the great work!

Great video you make it look like there is no pressure when you cast.
Good video Tim. Nice job.

Tim, you guys always say let it fall on a semi slack line. What specifically does that mean? How do you know you aren't altering the bait when you start picking up slack?
Watch your line. It shouldnt have alot of coiling in it but have a slight bow with just enough tension to keep coils/waves out of the line.
The Z-Man Diezel Shad is a good one too. Super soft and durable
Wow, great camera shot at 2:35
Wish I’d seen this yesterday!
Does it matter what line you use such as braid or floro when skipping?
