Again, as always, I don't know EVERYTHING, but I know a heck of a lot more than most people, so when I say something, it's probably at least close to correct. Can you skip a spinnerbait? Well, yeah of course, with a swimbait as the trailer. Can you catch big ones on a weightless lure with light line on a spinning rod? Of course. I am just talking about what I THINK is the best dock lure, which is the jig. There ya go
Tyler, I just wanted to say thanks. You probably have the most informative bass fishing channel on RUclips. As a boy from the mountains of Idaho, I didn’t get a lot of bass fishing in my blood early on. now living in Oregon, I’m trying to learn how to bass. I appreciate everything you’re teaching folks and wanted to say thanks.
Should add a disclaimer “i am Not to be held responsible for any and all boats damaged by beginners trying to skip under docked boats” lol best vid ive seen on skippin

Hey Tyler I have the lew's skipping and pitching reel it has a skipping setting on the brake dial so that should help me when I move to table rock lake next month
I was getting skunked today at a local pond so decided practice my skipping. Overall, I had a few minor backlashes, but was successful at getting farther under tree overhangs than in the past. Thanks for the tips.
I like over hanging trees better. When they're like an umbrella over the water, just about six inches from touching the water. Everyone else says, "man I wish I could get a lure under there." And then I just skip one right under.
Your pretty good at skipping docks & good lessons on how to do it, roll casting & lifting up is very important, I will try it next trip, I believe your the 1st person on YT to show how to do it, THANKS👍
I appreciate you showing the backlashes and "bad" skips. So many like to show the "how to", but only show the good ones. It makes it more entertaining, and it helps show people that no one is perfect 100% of the time.
You should try running some top water poppers of of rocky points in mild wind. The bass will go crazy. Also they are good around brushy points as well. Watermelon texas rigged senkos in 8-10ft of water in rocks and ledges are great. Btw surf boat waves make it hard lol. Nice vid
Thanks for the reply dude, my videos aren’t great quality yet but after I can upgrade my equipment hopefully someday I can make videos as high quality as yours.
Tyler, could you please do a comparison of skipping jigs with a curado DC vs a standard baitcaster. This type comparison has not been done and it has never been addressed on you tube. Due to two totally different braking systems, people are confused about the ability of a DC reel to skip as good as a traditional baitcaster brake system.
Hey Tyler can say what kind of lure you use for skipping? I watched the video and I’m going to get the Lews reel but did you say the rod was the Lews 7’4”? I actually just bout one 7’4” and 6’8” Lews tod and a Lews bait caster from Bass Pro Shop. I need a boat lol I’m having a rough time shore fishing. I have two bait casters and neither has caught a fish yet!! Thanks for all your help I’m learning a ton from you!!
I can skip flawlessly on my spinning rods but still having trouble with the baitcasters. Commenting before watching so hopefully I can learn some good stuff.
Hey T, Was just very curious on what settings and spool tension i need to have when trying to skip without having it blow up on me every time. I think you forgot to talk about it in the video. Keep up the good work! I appreciate all the tips and tricks.
Thanks for this vid! I got to try it out this past weekend when I was kayak fishing! I only had one minor backlash (I think that was because I play a lot of disc golf so roll casting was pretty easy), and MAN is skipping fun! Granted, only one dock had a fish hit (2.42 lbs, 19 inches), but I would have NEVER gotten that one if I hadn't skipped it underneath that dock. She was in there super deep!
Great episode 👍👍. I’m motivated now to put in the time to learn to skip well. I expect I’ll be reviewing this video for spot checking my technique. Tight lines.
I would recommend learning to skip with a spinning rod to eliminate backlashes. That’s how I learned how; by skipping mangroves for snook. Now I have learned to skip, jigs, frogs, Texas rigs, etc… and it’s really improved my fishing for many different species
@@TylersReelFishing OK thank you for your reply. What kind are they? Is there a video of you talking bout them? Is there a certain brand that is better than others? Lol. Sorry so many questions. Thanks
I find that braided line is easier to skip, but especially around wood, it gets stuck more (literally digs in). And a lot of the bodies of water that I fish are too clear for braided line to be the most effective. Some people claims it’s easier to skip, and I agree with them in some ways. It does also get worse back lashes though
I have never really learned how to deal with internal centrifugal braking, so I just leave 2 on and 4 off usually lol. I can imagine that centrifugal would kick in faster than magnetic though, so give both a try
I’ve caught some of my biggest bass ever skipping just a wacky rig on 10 lb braid to a flouro leader and never broke off. I’ve caught 5 and 6 pounders and never had an issue.
Mr. Tyler, there is something that I'm doing wrong, I can somehow skip a jig on grass, but I can't figure out how to skip one on the water without a backlash.
flouro is too expensive these days. Never liked how it handled either. I'll use a foot or two as a leader on by braid, but my days to using it as a line to fill up my spool or over.
Hooooollllly butts....... the Frisbee connection just fixed my skipping. I didn't have it down yet but when he made that comment I went out and it just instantly clicked
Line feed off the reel vs preventing backlashes... I can't seem to find the sweet spot that gives me enough free spool to get the lure where I want it, while avoiding bird's nest. MAYNE I am trying to get the lure to far. You are lot closer to the dock, tree, et al than I am.
I’ve skipped walking baits on purpose because if you skip them and then working right over the area you skipped it on it’s the basses attention , or at least it has increased my bites , or its just a coincidence
Bass do not use shade to keep cool or because they have no eyelids they use shade for concealment for ambushing prey and concealment from predators . Most objects that create shade aside from furnishing ambush points also attract minnows and bluegills due to algae or other food for small fish .
I mean I can skip a crank bait(kinda) , a popper (kinda), a football jig ( a mile) , a lizard( pretty good). But I mean skipping is one of my strong suits
TylersReelFishing oh ok thanks! I couldn’t find them anywhere at the moment tho. Why or why not braided line for skipping, or on a baitcaster in general? Thanks! Love the videos

Are you putting a lot of velocity into your roll casts or do you not put as much energy into them?
Excellent content, great instruction. Keep it up!
Thanks Damian!
As always great video. You are my go to once again. Forehand ultimate throw- excellent tip
My forehand needs work, it’s been too long since I played haha
Is braid good to skip with also???
You can yes
Braid is all I've ever used to skip, it works fantastic. The heavier the better. Greg Hackney has a good video about skipping with 65 lb braid.

Do the glasses that you wear help see in or through the water? I noticed you say you got em before you reel in.
They definitely do help, but in this instance, I feel the fish biting, then I set the hook

What would be a good budget reel for a heavy rod
You want a strong reel, so I’d say $150+

Bass liking shade gave me a funny thought while watching this. Just picture a bunch of bass using your boat for shade while you're fishing.
Smallmouth bass are known to do that on northern fisheries!

Correct, with certain trailers and usually easier with the skirt off. Still not the easiest by FAR though, which is the point I was making
