- Dock skipping lures is a must-know technique for all serious bass anglers. Gerald “GMAN” Swindle is a master among masters. He teaches the art of dock skipping in this ultra-informative video covering proper form and body mechanics, rod setup and tackle considerations, and boat positioning guidance.

1. Don't rush the process. Focus on taking it slow and easy, especially if you're new to dock skipping. Deliberate focus on improving your hand and eye coordination comes with practice. Don't get "flustered"ated," as you'll backlash more and bail on the technique.
2. Learn to skip with a 7-foot medium-heavy rod. The 7-foot length is the best starting all-arounder due to reduced weight (less fatigue), while a medium-heavy provides the optimal blend of power and the rod tip flex to sling baits accurately. You sacrifice feel and accuracy while increasing backlashing with a stiffer heavy-power rod.
3. Use a casting reel with a 6.8:1 gear ratio. Swindle admits this is controversial, but he feels that the bigger gears in high-speed reels aren't as smooth, are less accurate, and seem to backlash more.
4. Tuck your shirt in. Yes, you read correctly -- doing so reduces your rod butt getting caught in the shirt, so it's about fewer headaches than winning fashion contests.
5. Don't leave too much line hanging. Swindle's #1 no-no is starting your cast with too much line hanging; doing so causes your bait to slap the water at the start of the cast. Ten to 14-inches is optimal, in Swindle's opinion.
6. Stop your rod where you want the bait to go -- like a firearm, where the rod tip points is where the lure flies. Focus on releasing your cast when your rod tip is pointed at the target. Similarly, keep your eyes on the mark to increase accuracy. Wondering eyes usually send your bait off-target.
7. Resist setting your casting reel brake and tension dial too tight. Overtightening these settings causes most anglers to cast with more force, resulting in more backlashes and casting high and left (for right-handers).
8. Master your sidearm skip first. Sidearm casting with your dominant arm is the easiest skip to develop, which boosts confidence and success. Once proficiency is gained, start working on your backhand cast next.
9. Minimize body movement. You usually don't have a lot of space, so use your wrist and good form while keeping overall body movement to a minimum.
10. Avoid unnecessary skipping. Swindle casts the lure as far as possible before the initial skip. You usually have more skipping latitude in dirty water (it can even be an attractant), but day in, day out, less commotion is better.
11. Don't forget to work the bait. Let the bait sink, then work it deliberately back to the edge of the dock. Doing so generates more bites and can reveal a bass positioning pattern.
12. Always watch your line. Cross members, cables, brush -- you name it, a hooked bass will wrap you under a dock. Get on it after a bite and clear the bass from the cover.
13. Repeat productive casts. Where there's one, there's often more. Get your bait back in there after you hook or catch a bass.
14. Don't get too close or far away from your work (dock). In both instances, casting is more complicated. With the former, you risk spooking fish with boat noise and shadows. It's also hard to line up and follow through on casts. Casting accuracy and hook setting strength are reduced if you're too far away. You'll find that sweet spot with practice.
15. Use fluorocarbon line exclusively around wooden docks (and metal too). Braid is prone to digging in, catching, adhering, and wrapping around wood and metal. The inherent springiness of fluorocarbon reducing hanging up.
16. Adjust line size to the water clarity. Swindle favors skipping with 16- to 18-pound line most of the year - especially when the water is clear. He won't hesitate to go with 20 or even 22-pound test in dirty water.
17. Stock an assortment of 3/8- and 1/2-ounce jigs, with a 3/8-ounce being the 90% lure. Choose a jig with a smaller hook to improve skipping distance, accuracy, and hook setting power.
18. Know when to bail on docks. Too much wind makes skipping docks a real challenge. When you start fighting it too much, consider pivoting to a different technique or pattern.
Don't get flushrated
Can we get the “yer just smokin crack” on a t-shirt? 🤣🙌🙌🙌
“Ma’am I pooped my britches” - Gerald Swindle
Try starting with a spinning reel then graduating to a bait caster.
I could listen to GMAN talk all day , good stuff!!
Gerald thanks for the info. Has anyone ever said you and Matthew McConaughey sound similar?
They oughta have G-Man start doing Toyota ads like the Mathew McConaughey Lincoln ads...
I hear you Mr Miller that Guy is just awesome. Hey Mr Miller is really funny he's got an excellent personality. GOD bless you and your family your pal fisherman Mike from Missouri. Ps hey Mr Miller I'm moving to Texas in two months you think I'm going to catch a big bass.
God, the more I watch and hear this guy....the more I like him. He is growing to be my favorite pro
Hold my 🍺 you don’t want it G
“If you go skipping docks and think your not gonna hang, you’re smoking crack”- The G man.
"Respect my Autoritay!!!!" Great thing about G-Man, he is an excellent speaker and is hilarious to boot. Love to watch him!
The best in depth full explanation of skipping ever. He covered ALL aspects of skipping as only the G-Man can. Thanks!
Great video & Matthew McConaughey did an awesome job with the voice over!
LOL, I just noticed the similarities in their voices.
hahahaha
Nobody gonna comment on the subtle Stevie wonder joke?
Gettin “flustrated” learnin. Gonna keep practicing. Great video
It’s like mcconaughey took up fishing..
Very folksy.
He's the Matthew McConaughey of fishing
i'm high and to the left every time. so what should i loosen? spool tension, knob on cover, or internaml breaks on spool under cover?
Watched Him back hand skip under the dock and realized I have no clue what I’m doing
Great tips Gerald is a legend 👏
If you cant skip a rock you'll never skip a dock
This information is immensely useful. I'm joining my high school fishing team this year and one of our lakes will be cedar creek reservoir and if you can't skip boat docks you're at a disadvantage! I just tried this for the first time on a small stock tank with modest success. Yeah, it's on my channel! I appreciate all the tips. Have a great week!
Congratulations on getting up and running with high school angling, and thanks for checking out this content. It's an excellent tutorial for sure. Keep at it on all fronts Connor -- fishing, RUclips, etc.!
It’s hard to watch some videos because people aren’t talking to educate, they’re talking to show off how much they know. It’s easy to watch your vids. Thanks, bro
That was an incredibly useful video, thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Simply amazing. This takes skill not spotlighting
It took me a long time to figure out how to skip properly. Most importantly, I had to find what works for me. It's not about showboating, it's about putting your bait back farther than other baits have been. I started with a worm and worked from there. I suggest if you're new to skipping, go out on a body of water, any water, and practice. Use a fluke or a wacky rig to start. Don't have 30,000 feet of line hanging off the end. Keep the line kind of close until you figure out the mechanics and then back it off slowly. Think slingshot.
Why would gear ratio have anything to do with accuracy and backlashing. The gears have nothing to do with the spool during a free spool cast. After you engage the handle after the cast to start the retrieve, only then do the gears go into effect. He'd have to explain that one to me.
Totally agree. I netiher can understand why he says that...
Even of what you say is true which makes since, its his way of explaining why he prefers the 6.8.
@@corysturgis6660 there’s a lot better ways of explaining why you like a certain gear ratio than something that makes no sense. I can think of many reasons.
And who’s the pro here the keyboard warrior or the guy in the video …. Leave it at that he’s just a southern boy
@@NateAndSons91 I’m just a southern man 60 years old and used to guide for a living. You explain it then. He’s one of my favorite bass pros because he’s the funniest of the bunch. I share his stuff on my Facebook but what he said makes no sense.
It’s probably not perfect for beginners but my absolute favorite skipping rod is my conquest 844c (the 844c isn’t just a $700 conquest taper/power…loomis offers it in a few of their lines). But that mbr taper allows you to absolutely rocket your jig, etc. with minimal effort. What everyone says about your brakes is 100% true…don’t max out your brakes. Treat it like any other casting technique and just use your thumb for control, that’s all. It’s not that difficult…if an idiot like me can do it, *anyone* can do it.
I tried to backhand like that once...
Then I threw my rod in the water🤣
Me too! And I'm a big guy. I'm like, how weak am I lol?
@@stuartcarter944 exactly🤣
It's mostly about coordination
He is the Matthew Mcconnaughey of fishing lol
I yell at fish too. It’s usually when I’ve got them 3 feet from the boat and they jump off the hook. I’ve cussed out many a fish in my day.
I'm pretty sure I just found a dude I could consider a favorite fisherman. Good explanation of the mechanics of the cast or technique. And the commentary is hilarious with the Southpark references in the McConnaughy voice!
I think the biggest thing you said in the entire video was, "Skipping is an entire technique. It's not just one cast."
That's game folks! 😎🇺🇸🤙
@14:02 are we just hoping we’re not smacking ppl’s boats? 😂😂 with my luck I’d skip directly into someone’s gel coat
My top 5 fav anglers and I could listen to him talk all day dude just a trip 😆 he seem to keep it 💯
GMAN always giving up the juice!! 🥤
And this is why Gerald Swindle is the best at what he does. The devil is in the details and he is spot on.
That's just experienced talkin and no substitute
Yeah, he shared the goods in this vid. Thanks for watching.
Da skip-to-mie-Lou legend. I saw one of his skippin vid a few yrs ago. Got motivated and made it out to the lake. 1st cast skippin: POOF massive bird nest. Spent 10 mins fixin da nest. That was da last time I tried skippin.
By far the best skipping video I have ever seen g is the man and tells it like it is! A lot goes into this technique awesome video G
We appreciate it Chad. He managed to go steady for 25 minutes straight! Just a GMAN brain dump, but he just keeps dropping nuggets.
Lol that flustrated gets me every time
Excellent G-Man Tutorial.
That lake looks so beautiful and peaceful….and very expensive!
Hell, I’d be happy living in one of those 2-story the boathouses!
Any idea which lake this video was filmed on?
Be well.
great info on this topic i learned alot by this video...so what do u think about a 6;4;1 ratio reel for skipping? thanks gerald gman...
Excellent advice. The one tip Gerald mentioned, that I cannot figure is “the gear ratio of 6.8”? Gerald says he has tried all the ratios and 6.8 ratio casts/skips best. 17:12. I don’t doubt his advice, I just can’t see how a gear ratio affects the dynamics of a skip cast. Thanks.
Love these video's, i could watch and learn all day. Unfortunately With FFS taking over, these kinds of instructional videos will be irrelevant if you plan on being super competitive at tournament fishing.
Dude, shut up!!! TMI!!! Awesome 20 minute clinic for greenhorns. You just dissiminated 5 years of info in less than half an hour🙊
No
Just start skipping with spinning setup, way more controll and u don't get back lash, problem is everyone watches the pros and they don't use spinning
But now r finally Startin to use more spinning set ups but nor for skipping
I would out skip 90% of these pros, I fished discovery bay in California
Yo Gman, the only thing moving on a cast is the spool. The gears have absolutely nothing to do with the cast only when reeling. The Spool "Free Spools" on a cast, meaning it is free to spin on it own. You still Da Man man tho Brotha!!!
he is the Matthew McConaughey of the fishing world, Alright, Alright, Alright....
Ok just wondering about the rod. I know he said 7’3 med heavy with a shorter butt on it. So I see the rod bending like a whip with a 3/8 oz jig on it. I guess the action and the lure weight for the rod would be a major factor as well.
Awesome video guys a badass.
Sound like me skipping docks with a whopper plopper yes its possible and u can also skip a dropshot with a flatworm you just need to go down to 8 inch leader 1/8th oz tungsten just make sure its the tear drop not stick all 3 of my PBs on my lake came from the same dock in the fall largemouth smallmouth and a spot clear water highland reservoir no grass so docks are there favorite year round and hes right summer there in the backs and the spring there lined up under the front its easy pickings if u have a real open dock that u can get away flipping a dropshot under but if you know how to roll cast u can almost skip any bait under 3/8ths 7 foot medium heavy and im using a baitcaster have only fished for 4 years and skipping docks has become my favorite thing to do. 2nd bait 1/8oz texas rigged hit worm 4.25 and a weightless texas rigged 4 inch senko green pumpkin dip the tail chartruese and its the king under a dock even if there on the bottom ive caught way more on a senko under docks than i ever have with a jig
GMAN IS AN ICON! Love this guys energy and enthusiasm!
Is that Matthew McConaughey?!?!?!?!?! Sure sounds like it!
They oughta have G-Man start doing Toyota ads like the Mathew McConaughey Lincoln ads...
G if and when you come back to Lake Champlain let me buy you a drink or a Dew! Bucket list #1, get a picture and have a nice chat with Gman! I will do it before I die!
My only critique would be to use left handed reels. I’m right handed but reacting to a strike or dancing with the cast, why you switching hands?
Thank You, Mr. Swindle!!
Welcome!
I never knew Matthew McConaughey was so knowledgeable about fishing.
Man, I just love learning from the G Man. My new term is "lumpy water". Learned a lot from this and it will be my go-to video for tuning my skipping technique,
Thank man. Real happy to hear this. Swindle is a fishing teaching savant for sure.
Thank you so much. This is really good info. And you hit on things I've done it do. And the reasoning why and why not makes total sense.
Again thank you
"Flustrated" my Gman combo word of the year
Yep, it's a go-to for us now as well! 😂
@@Wired2Fish lol good stuff
WOW! What a fantastic seminar on skipping. Thanks G-Man
I have been practicing skipping for the past month on my pond outside. Ive used my daiwa tatula sv tw on a kaden 713, a curado dc on a st croix mojo bass 7' medium and then a curado bfs on a sierra 700c. From these I really felt the rod speed made so much difference. I will perfectly skip like 6/10 casts on the sierra that has a lot more flex then the mojo bass like 4/10 then the kaden like 2/10. At this point for me the skipping is more dependant on the rod.
Yep, now it is time to try it some more since the ice is thawed. 😛😛
It's all down to how you skip I guess- watch Steve Rogers skip and notice he's using an extra fast rod- which is what he recommends for skipping. He does caution you that you need one with a god flexible, crisp tip but, he likes extra fast.
I swear Gman and Matthew McConaughey sound just alike
Are all of these "congratulations you have been selected..." comments legit or is it a scam. Feels like a scam
This is the single greatest fishing how-to video ever made
Tried to duplicate this man’s skipping and got “Flustrated”
I only made it 7 minutes in…I feel dumber for watching that 7 minutes
I do very much enjoy that left handed hillbilly dialog
What’s wrong with blueberry pie?
Reel gear ratio has nothing to do with skipping accuracy.
I use a spinning reel for or a zebco closed face reel to skip or I can't do it at all
Awesome video! I do wish he went over the step by step mechanics of the cast
I gotta master this. Summer days, hot sun. U gotta skip..
Is there ever a time that you will allow someone to go fishing with you?
Respect my authoritay bish, he is the absolute man
dude,I love this
Thanks. GMAN at his finest.
This guy gotta be Matthew mcconahueys cousin
Great stuff! I’m just a beginner but the information I’ve gained from this video is awesome!
This is what we love hearing. Thanks for watching. You'll be skipping like G in no time!
It can be very flustrating at times😂😂😂
I really appreciate your Video a lot of great information keep them coming 👍
Thanks, will do Malcolm. We appreciate you watching.
Don’t sleep on 11:55… That’s insane.
can you show how to skip docks on the back of the boat i ride with my cousin
I got 5 backlashes watching this 😂😂😂
I can listen to this man talk all day.
I want that hat...G-Man...let a man know where to find one.
Great video. i lost it at youtuber and youguber lol.
Typical combat fisherman throwing fish back in the water without any respect. Knows what he’s doing though but these tournament junkies have no respect for the fish.
I’m 47 and haven’t really bass fished since I was younger. So to say I’ve just really started bass fishing. This is probably the best skipping video I’ve watched. Thanks for all the good info.
I needed to take a knee after that backhand skip G!!!
Respect my authority, Fish.
This was an awesome video. I have noticed the bow of the boat height matters a lot too. It’s way easier when you’re in a fiberglass boat because they sit lower than say the 12 foot vhull i use which sits higher. Keep your trolling motor as close to flush mounted to the boat as you can get too.
Great wisdom Sir!
He should be a coach at a big college somewhere
Why can’t you win a tournament then ?
21:13 Lmbo...I'm dying over here.
If you think you're gonna skip docks and not get hung up or overspool..."you're smokin' crack"...boom. Bwaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Part Cat. Part Mongoose. That's me
Good stuff 🎣
I want to have a beer with this guy.
