Carl Jung; a Swiss psychiatrist, had a theory about human evolution by using our "shadow" or unconscious selves to promote growth by learning from and adapting our positive and negative tendencies. The "Forty Six & 2" part comes from human chromosomes where it was theorized that early man had 44 chromosomes (42 autosomes and 2 sex chromosomes), modern man has 46 chromosomes (44 autosomes and 2 sex chromosomes) but in order for human beings to grow and become one with each other, we would need to evolve further to 48 chromosomes (46 autosomes and 2 sex chromosomes). Tool uses a lot of metaphors and double entendres in their writing, especially in their middle two albums; Aenima and Lateralus.

DMT helps understand this. I always thught it was about the breakdown of the ego and the greater understanding of the collective conciesness. Our dna is but a vibration and the way we think and understand can help the structure of our dna.

This song is about change. Embracing your 'shadow self' is basically confronting yourself and reconciling all the bad shit you've witnessed or done yourself. You can't move forward until you deal with your own past type of thing.

Adam Jones on guitar, Justin Chancellor on bass, Danny Carey on drums/percussion, Maynard James Keenan on vocals... this has been the Tool line-up since 1996 (Bassist Paul D'amour left around 1994/'95)
Yes to much emphasis is put on Danny when they are all amazing and should be recognized as such.

Fun fact: Paul had some contributions on the bass parts for Æ! Justin wrote only a couple bass parts. I forget which one's off the top but look it up:/

@@usefulidiot3776 D'amour was credited for some songs, yes... but the album was recorded entirely by bassist Justin Chancellor.
The issue was that Paul D'Amour was frustrated w/ the intricate arrangements that Tool was creating in rehearsals (he was more of a punk rock guy, and wanted simplicity) so he quit. Justin Chancellor joined and completed the writing sessions for 'Aenima' and recorded the album in 1996.
@@sumonjamal1653 Despite Paul's unwillingness to commit to the band, we still need to appreciate him for what he has given us. I didn't mean it as if he recorded them but just pointing out that he had more to do with the album then is on the surface. 💕

It's about owning the ugly bits of yourself. It's about knowing what you are. Both good and bad. As most will readily own the good they do, they will also tend to find ways to distance or minimize the bad they do. Own both. That is the only way to come to terms with everything and decide what you can live with, and what you can never live with. Otherwise, you float like a balloon, carried on whatever currents happen to come your way.
It’s about evolving, specifically adding 2 more chomosomes to our DNA. I think the evolution involves obtaining one’s 3rd eye too. My favorite song on this album is “push it” (put sh!t) One of their top 8 songs to me.

This song has a very deep psychological meaning. It’s based off of a theory about how we can evolve our brains. It’s based on Carl Jung’s theory that humans are currently made of 44 autonomies and two sex genes. The next step on evolution he said would be 46 autonomies and 2 sex genes. He’s singing about the changes he’s making to evolve. He’s crawling on his belly.
The song is about evolving into a higher state of being.
The song uses the framework of some of Carl Jung's theories on human nature to paint a picture of someone going through a profound moment of self-growth.... Jung was into psychiatry and philosophy. Some of his ideas worked, and some of his ideas didn't pan-out, similar to how Sigmund Freud's theories partly worked and partly washed-out. Out of the two, Carl Jungs ideas incorporated a bit more of the 'metaphysical' stuff. Cheers to you and fam. Grat reac. =D

Him saying "...46 & 2 just ahead of me" is evolution (change) is in my future. The theory 46 & 2 is a suggestive next state or theory of human evolution. Human DNA is currently 44 autosomes (22 pairs both man and women have) and the 2 (1 pair) sex chromosomes being xx(female) or xy(male). 46 (23 pairs) & 2 will be some sort of mutation (evolution). Fun stuff that. But Maynard once said; "it is 46, and the 2 are an 'x' or a 'y'." What the H377 that would turn out to be? Who the FUKK knows...and is not even likely possible.
The major underlying principles here relate to chromosomes and Jungian theory. Some of the ideas behind this song are based on the teachings of the spiritual explorer Drunvalo Melchizedek. Here's a snip of an interview with him (Leading Edge, 12/95): "There are three totally different kinds of humans on the Earth, meaning that they perceive the One reality in three different ways, interpreted differently. The first kind of human has a chromosome composition of 42+2. They comprise a unity consciousness that does not see anything outside themselves as being separate from themselves. To them, there is only one energy - one life, one beingness that moves everywhere. Anything happening anywhere is within them, as well. They are like cells in the body. They are all connected to a single consciousness that moves through all of them. These are the aboriginals in Australia. There might be a few African tribes left like this. Then, there is our level, comprising 44+2 chromosomes. We are a disharmonic level of consciousness that is used as a steppingstone from the 42+2 level to the next level, 46+2...These two additional chromosomes change everything."
According to Melchizedek, our planet is covered with geometrically constructed "morpho genetic grids" that extend from about 60 feet under the Earth's surface to about 60 miles above the Earth, arranged in geometric patterns (see "Sacred Geometry"). Each species has its own grid that supports life and connects the consciousness of its particular species. Before any species can come into existence or make an evolutionary step, a new grid must be completed. When a species becomes extinct, that particular species' grid dissolves.
A new grid was completed in 1989 - the "Christ-consciousness" grid. This grid will allow humans to evolve into our next version. We'll develop two additional chromosomes (which are really "geometrical images" designed to resonate with our specific grid) for a total or 46 + 2.
The main change will be a shift to the "unity consciousness." Every cell in your body has its own consciousness and memory. You, the higher being that occupies your body, make the millions of different consciousnesses in your body work together as one being. How does this relate to this grid? Think of yourself as a cell and the grid as the higher being. We will still have individual consciousness, but will be united in the form of a higher being in order to work as one entity

46 & 2 refers to chromosomes. A regular human has 46. Someone who has 46 & 2 reaches the Christ Consciousness. Essentially it is a sort of enlighten state.
