I'm so happy Forty Six & 2 beat out 7empest, and here's why: You guys are brand new to Tool. Take in all their older stuff first (I know you did Invincible and loved it) that will be the best way to get to know them. 7empest is a 15 minute long insanity that weaves through their entire discography. Having a grasp of their older stuff will give you a much deeper appreciation of their new album, I believe. This is my favorite thing about Tool. I had listened to tempest 100 tones before I stumble across your comment and I had never looked at the song ad being the sum of bits and pieces from the rest of the entire catalogue and now tempest feels like a completely different song and it's like hearing it for the first time again. I have friends that will winter how I can listen to nothing but tool and I always tell them that as soon as it gets old or i feel like one extracted everything I could, I will love on. Seriously , Willie for President! Ticks and Leeches is all time great Drumming song.. even voted up really high on the Rolling Stone list of the same name.
this song refers to one of carl jung's concepts, the shadow. jung reckoned that when we're being brought up and we're taught which of our behaviours are socially acceptable and which aren't we suppress one side and nurture the other and they become our shadow and our persona. the shadow's still always there and it still runs our behaviour as much as the above ground part. jung thought that through dreaming and bringing dreams into reality with art and rituals we can take control of our selves and be what we were meant to be
This song is about introspection. This song is about digging through old memories, the negative side of your psyche that you bury and repress and ultimately harms your life in ways you don’t consciously perceive. The “shadow” is a term from Jungian psychology. It is one of the many Jungian archetypes. It is the opposite of the ego. It is all the negative aspects and self-deprecating parts of your self-perception. It can really be seen in any way that you personally interpret of discovering those buried parts of yourself that consist of your shadow... so your interpretation of these negative aspects coming up through a withdrawal experience is valid. However, I always saw this song as explaining the experience of coming through a very intense and negative bad trip on a very heavy dose of psychedelics... 6 hits of strong acid or 6 grams of strong mushrooms... one might think they’ll have an intensely beautiful experience, when suddenly the paranoia and fear hits once... and as soon as it does, it snowballs into a personal first-class trip straight to death and hell. A terrifying and dark bad trio into ego-death territory will send you STRAIGHT into your “shadow” and the only option at that point is to maintain and come out the other side, hopefully learning some profound truths about yourself. And in my experience, it’s actually these challenging, hard, negative trips, marinated in fear are the ones you actually learn the most about yourself from, and grown the most from. That’s how I view the lyrics of this song. (I see it sort of serving as a companion piece to Third Eye, the final, epic track from this album, which is blatantly about psychedelics.... where that song is about having a more positive intense psychedelic experience, this song is about the other fork in the road that you can go down after ingesting some of that sacrament.) Though like I said, it’s open to interpretation... all tool songs are very much open to interpretation... they have a basic meaning which is on the surface, but they leave it up to the listener to let themselves attach their own personal experience and meaning into that framework to really be a more personal experience to that listener... so if someone has experienced what Maynard is singing about in this song by going through a withdrawal episode (and I can personally vouch that that is surely a possibility) then that is a completely valid interpretation of this song. Also, many people will say that this song is ABOUT the evolution of man from having “44+2” chromosomes to having “46+2” chromosomes... what some people call “Christ consciousness”... our supposed next step in human evolution... but the song is not ABOUT that... it merely uses that theory to say “46+2 is just ahead of me” meaning that by going through this experience of sifting through his shadow-self, a personal evolution is ahead of him... that his consciousness is on a path to expansion, and this shadow-experience is a step on that journey.
mpd370... I actually really love that that verse happens to be describing some sort of cataclysm... but it’s only a coincidence... the 46+2 chromosome thing aka “Christ consciousness” in new age terminology has been well established as the meaning (or more specifically the inspiration) of the song title for a long long time... since the 90s... interesting verse though. (Also, I would say the video definitely aligns with the idea that it’s based on a psychedelic spiritual experience... particularly the last bit with the leaf and the Alex Grey collaboration bit)
@@teamfingahs4907 well... technically, this was before we were actually people.... in fact, it was before we separated from chimps and gorillas actually... the whole content of that song is retarded.... it's just that the song is amazing
@@notimportant3686 They are painting a metaphorical picture. It's not necessarily to be taken literally and does not rely on scientific accuracy if that would oppose the intuitive understanding. In that sense, the interpretation of it being about withdrawal/beating an addiction is just as valid as an evolutionary one or one of general self-improvement.
Love how rappers always pay attention to the lyrics, not that I should be surprised of course. Maynard is definitely the best lyricist I’ve ever heard.
The song in general is all about self-improvement and reflecting on yourself to evolve and be a better person. You can view it through the lens of overcoming addiction if that's how it hits you. The great thing with alot of Tool songs is that the specifics of song meanings can always come down to the person listening. The songs are what you want them to be to work for you.
The shadow refers to jungian philosophy. Carl jung believed that you need to embrace the shadow ( the darkest part of yourself) to fully grow as a person. And if you ignore it, or fight it, it will consume you from within. If you can embrace it, and pull it into the light of consciousnesses, one can live in harmony (balance). At least that's my take on it. Also 46+2 is the number of chromosomes needed for unity consciousnesses. All in all, this song is about growing into the next stage of existence.

Since I 1st heard Tool in 1991, I've always said that Tool is the Pink Floyd of our generation. Both bands blew music outta the water, made their own genre, & they both pushed the limits farther than any other musicians. What Floyd was to ppl in the 70's-80's, Tool is that to us now. & They pushed it even more than Floyd did. That's why they're the greatest band of all
Been doing tool Tuesday at work for 15 or so years. Only way I could get people to jam out my kind of music. Glad you guys are doing it also. Dont forget about salival!! Good stuff!

When bands like Tool, SOAD, Deftones, etc are so talented it doesn’t matter who hears them the first time or the millionth time every single person is blown away. I think it’s bada$$
Nice 👍 tool Tuesday ftw. DUDE i about shit myself when you said “withdrawal”. Wow that hit home. Think recovery, getting better. Making the changes to better yourself and throwing away the bad.
It always makes me laugh when people listen to this for the first time and say "I'm going to have to look into this.." This song alone sucked me so far down the rabbit hole. I am still learning years later.

Believe it or not this song got me out of that hole.i am forever thankful to Tool and this song. Now I have a good life. Now when the demons come, I fight back with a vengeance. A lot of this album was based on California pop new age stuff at the time, mostly condensed in the book "Nothing in This Book is True, But Its Exactly How Things Are" by Bob Frissell. 46+2, Merkabah, Third Eye stuff, almost all the 'new age' ideas on Aenema and the Salival live album that came out of that tour seem to be right out of the book. Maynard spins and gives his own interpretation on it, but its pretty clear he was reading the book or thinking about it when he wrote out some of these ideas.

You MUST see them live!! I've been listening since the beginning, and finally saw them live at The Gorge in George, WA on 17JUN2017. It was like hearing them for the first time all over again :)
I like the Pink Floyd comparison. Certainly different, but I agree a similar vibe, and structure.
I've said that for years it's diffi but there.
I hope yalls channel blows up huge man y’all got such good energy and it’s awesome watching people enjoy tool as much as I do. Too much negativity and sadness in 2020 and y’all bring light to it!
That's why they're the greatest band of all
I got to watch them live in Sacramento and it was one of the best concerts ive ever been to and ive been to a lot.
Been doing tool Tuesday at work for 15 or so years. Only way I could get people to jam out my kind of music. Glad you guys are doing it also. Dont forget about salival!! Good stuff!
Awesome stuff guys! Keep it up. Wish it was Tuesday every day lol. Cheers!
Stayed up far to late watching your tool vid reactions. They are a band totally of their own category. Funny my first was sober too.. but way back in the early 90's. Better late then never though boys! ;)
This is all from the philosophy of Carl Jung and the “Shadow Self”.
It always makes me laugh when people listen to this for the first time and say "I'm going to have to look into this.." This song alone sucked me so far down the rabbit hole. I am still learning years later.
So cool that you guys are rocking out haha
I know I'm late to comment. This tool song for me saved my life. When I got out of the Army after 10 1/2 years I was in a dark place of mind and soul. Believe it or not this song got me out of that hole.i am forever thankful to Tool and this song. Now I have a good life. Now when the demons come, I fight back with a vengeance. Definitely subscribed to this channel. Watching you guys on your Tool journey is pretty awesome to witness. "Rangers Lead the Way" NEVER give up.
You guys are great! Ticks and leeches, possibly the heaviest Tool song. Something a little different would be Rosetta Stoned, a little goofier side of Tool talking about some guys acid trip
I suggested Tool Tuesday how about a thanks and a shout out!! I recommended it on your Invincible reaction Ænema next!
Can you guys PLEASE react to Tool again?!!!!! What I would give to see you guys experience Tool again. It would be cool to see an update on both of your Tool journeys
.
How have I not watch this one yet. O I can't wait
Aight, that's the fourth tool video, you guys convinced me, imma subscribe
Also, not to crowd comments too much, but I'd happily suggest either a more "ambient" track of theirs (like, Reflection), or the classic Parabol/Parabola combo (have I mentioned I'm a fan of Lateralus?) - here are some links for you guys: Parabola (both songs into one, as meant to be listened to, directly from the band's channel) ruclips.net/video/-_nQhGR0K8M/видео.html and Reflection: ruclips.net/video/4MzVuHqsNoM/видео.html
A perfect circle, 1 of his other bands, lots of great songs, outsider, hour glass, the doomed, etc etc etc. Pick any
Tool has always been like a musical overload for me. So damn good in every aspect.
Ya'll got a good vibe. Subbed.
Epic reaction guys next Tuesday Parabol/Parabola is a must got to react you guys will rock out pls:))
"its like a new pink floyd" - pretty much exactly how my dad, 68, described this band when I introduced him to this song.
Just subbed up guys...love your reactions to Tool. My favorite band since I bought my very 1st Cd, Undertow.
It's awesome watching new fans of Tool evolve with each song...Like watching my kids opening their gifts on Christmas morning!
PLEASE react to the fan made video of my favorite Tool song, "Right in Two".
I'll be looking in on you guys often!
PLEASE
Thanks for the sub bro...glad to have you aboard. And yes we are enjoying our journey into discovering this amazing band
@@Hollywood6IX yeah man, glad to join your family!

This WILL blow your minds, trust me!
Pull the lyrics on your phone at the same time...
You both would really like Ticks & Leeches, awesome mix of that slower, resonate stuff you said you liked in other videos and some harder jams.
also Danny Carey goes absolutely bonkers on this song
The intro is a bass. It has a certain feel to it when you play it. It’s not just hammering on the fretboard. Hard to explain but that’s the best I can do
I loved this album. A friend gave it to me for my 19th birthday. 19 years ago.
Tool Tuesdays? I like. I like. You just earned a sub, guys. Here's to your growing channel. Keep up the great work.
Will do bro thanks for the sub. Stick around and stay tuned for much more. Tool Tuesday is right around the corner.
Interesting you made the Pink Floyd comparison. When I saw them initially in 2001,my first reaction to their concert performance was “damn, they reminded me of Pink Floyd”,which I saw perform as well many years before . Their shows are something otherworldly . That’s all I can say.
Hey dudes, you guys are quite entertaining, I love seeing people really enjoying Tool. You guy really get into it! Your Tool journey has just begun, it's a vast and epic soundscape that has very few capable of rivaling it. Keep digging into it, I'll be there for all your Tool reactions!
Next listen to
Jambi
Intension & Reflection (listen as one song)
Aenima

Peace and love from South Africa
thanks bro were trying to do our best and so glad to have people like you aboard. We have been getting alot of recommendations on this song and im sure it will be coming VERY soon. Please hit that subscribe button bro and join us on our journey into Tool.
Love you guys!! you All Rock!!!
I love your guesses ...no harm to it especially when your willing to find out
Great videos guys. Keep going down the spiral of the path of Tool. Highly recommend "Aenima"would be a great next song. It would be very beneficial to listen to some of the older songs to gain a bigger perspective of where they came from to where they are now. I cant wait for the next reaction.
The meaning about this song is very deep and to much for a comment. Just google 46 & 2 and human dna. Plenty of videos on youtube too.
Ps. The intro is Bass guitar :)
Welcome to Tool 🤘 Lateralus should be your next reaction
Good honest reaction guys. If you're looking for another tool song to react to? Try Jambi from there 10000 days album. You won't be disappointed.🤘
Tool tuesday earned an extra sub. I love this band and one of my favorite things is seeing people experience them for the first time. I wish I could forget everything they have done and hear it all for the first time again.
I love what you guys are doing with Tool. I'm subbed. I would also love to see you react to the band 'Porcupine Tree'. Dark Matter (live in tilburg) is a great first song for that band. Thank you, fellas.
dude thanks for the suggestions. Glad to have you as a fellow Trash Talker
Also I would love to see you guys react to Third Eye next!
What would be cool would be to react to the TOOL music videos...trippy AF
If were talking tool... I'm there...good stuff here. Many layers of understanding to it
My favorite TOOL song is ALWAYS, the one I just listened to!!!
Have you guys done killswitch engage "signal fire" yet? Please do you wont regret it! The instrumentals in it are second to none
Tool has been in my top 5 of all time Favorite band. Been listening to them since I 12 years old and I am 41 now.
It's not just me that thinks the guy on the left looks like a young Lawrence Fishburne right?
Holy sheet, he does!!! Young Morpheus 😄
Bruno Mars on left n random meth addict from Breaking Bad.
Makes coincidental sense, as these guys are getting rapidly red-pilled into the Tool-osophy.
Great one
Love seeing people react to TooL 😍🖤
Tool always takes you on a vibrational roller coaster ride through the cosmos ♡♡♡
Fun Fact: Tool also pretty much puts on a modern-day Pink Floyd style light show man. Go see it if you get a chance. They won't disappoint.
You guys are getting it, tool has depth!
So happy you both are part of the TOOL ARMY
You guys should do a re-listen to Sober and The Pot. I feel like you would appreciate those 2 songs more now! Turned up and with lyrics!!
Shout out to Hotlanta from an upstate South Cack boy. Appreciate what you do. Be safe and Go Braves
Love your stuff guys, my recommendations would be "Sweat" off their first album Opiate....or "Swamp Song" from their second, Undertow
I'm with you on the Opiate EP and freaking Swamp Song all day. They really need to do both. I swear they won't want to stop once they get into those.
React to A Perfect Circle "Judith" please!
Orestes for me. Great song.
@@IronSide_Gamer Orestes is a great (and underrated) song.
Vuldo one of my all time favorite songs! Genius!
They need to understand the meaning of Judith to really appreciate it
"Right in Two" is a great Tool song not a lot people think about. "Prison Sex" is in my opinion, the best of the well known. Subscribed. Also check out the Melvins.
Now you should react to the O'Keefe kids covering this song.
I would love to see that.
Their Sober cover is just as good maybe even better
Absolutely great!! 👍
This song is awesome great pick.
I'll def subscribe to Tool Tuesday's 🤘🤘🤘🤘
You guys rock 🤘🏻
Great video.
Jambi - Tool
Vicarious - Tool
Also... all Tool
