Every song by Tool is a journey into the psyche. Very much appreciate the time you take to break down your take on it. Complete instrumental genius at work they are.
The goal of integrating the shadow is to realize you are the cause of all of your suffering. Your shadow is evil, and you must accept it, or you will push the evil onto others. Before you can be good, you must know the evil you are capable of.
@@kristinadk as a thought exercise I've imagined a torture scenario to surpass anything I've ever heard of. It was fueled by anger but, driven by reason. The result is something I've told very few people because, as is increasingly apparent, one must be very careful with whom we share. Regardless, it's always been shocking and horrifying and, comes with the same admonishment "you would never do that, would you." To which I first point out the obvious, I don't have the skills necessary to attempt such a thing and, secondly I can't imagine devoting the years required to carry it out. And after many years of contemplation, I've come the conclusion that true evil is more than a random act of violence or, even a deliberate act of violence. It is a very calculated and patient action designed for maximum suffering. The suffering can include death but, death can never be the goal because death is inevitable and how can the dead continue to suffer? We must be weary that in our efforts to prolong life, we don't unwittingly enable suffering. Right to die comes to mind. The debate seems never ending yet, I've known few who said they would gladly live as a vegetable on life support with the hope of medicine someday being able to heal them.
Imo the whole “shadow integration” thing is really hard because it involves being brutally honest with yourself about the times you’re a hypocrite and project on to others
I am completely in awww by this reaction.. he was soooo in tune with the lyrics, the break down and understanding of the meaning while behind an amazing beat most people just nod their heads to the beat never bothering to understand or appreciate the full song.. meaning, lyrics, instruments, harmony. Thank you so much for this. Much Love. ❤
The Tool Army welcomes you brother. The beautiful thing about this band is that no matter what they are singing about, you can interpret the meaning of the song in your own way. There’s no right answer. So in fact, no, you don’t sound stupid. Also, don’t focus too hard on the lyrics. The musicianship is also 10/10
You sir, got it. I wrote a paper in a psych class on this song in college. To understand who you truly are, you must uncover and expose your baser and subconscious self. For those will influence and partially make up your "seven layers of identity." You're not dumb, you're learning. It's a tough concept for some to grasp. I spent years in school trying to understand it all... Never got it all, but enough to realize what makes others act the way they do.
One of the keys to moving through is to understand the fragile child we all have within us, that traumatized child who tries to protect itself from being hurt again. This is where we find ourselves triggered emotionally, like a tone rising up and causing us to react to whatever it is that's re-creating those fears from long ago. People layer themselves with protection in order to keep that inner child safe, but in the process, all kinds of negative behaviours can come through, like violence, verbal abuse, running away, etc., etc. Really, we're all just trying to find love and be accepted so we can feel safe and secure. Knowing we have this fragile inner child, being aware when it starts to try to control our "true" selves, is the key to healing and being able to function as an adult. Tool is amazing and they've helped me see my shadow, as well as that little abandoned boy. All music is a form of healing in some way and protection as well. Great reactions! Peace.
I've seen Tool live three times, listen to them regularly, but never dove into the lyrics of this song. Thank you for giving me a whole new appreciation and understanding.

I’ve been a huge tool fan for twenty + years. Maynard is a genius. Have been to six concerts. The stage is typically very dark. In fact one show you could only see a silhouette of Maynard the entire concert. So naturally you can’t see the band you watch the a art on the screens.Deep lyrics + amazing instrumentals+ weed+ what ever the continuous never ending shifting shit on the screens= mind fuck.
Aenima has to be next!!! There is so much music and different genres that all have their place! Please keep going! If you do you will see what I mean! Never limit yourself to one style or you will miss out on so much!
If you can ever go to a tool concert, do it!!! I went to one about 15 years ago, and I can still remember how it made me feel. The whole stage is dark. The whole arena is dark except for giant screens that play all those trippy images that you see if their videos and album covers. Hearing the music live is incredible!!
....as a long time fan, I'm glad you liked it brother. I've heard that song thousands of times and it still hits me exactly as it did the first time. They truly are on another level musically/ artistically and I am grateful to those guys for giving me such a powerful outlet in my life. This particular song is a masterpiece in my opinion.
MORE TOOL! Let's fucking go. There are no bands like Tool. The whole catalogue, every song, is excellent. Also check out System of a Down. Serj has some bars too (and awesome harmonies).
@@bosnow9221 I mean, yeah, but my comment was specifically referring to the song to which MJK lends vocals, because it was relevant to the comment and video. But yes. White Pony was phenomenal, especially when you look at older albums like Adrenaline or Around the Fur and you see how their sound has consistently graduated. Not changed, but aged like wine. Deftones is definitely one of those bands for me.
"The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek." ~Joseph Campbell To integrate the darker parts of yourself, your shadow, you have to get super honest, and be willing to feel all the feels you're too afraid to experience because they're overwhelming. Too powerful. If you can tap into that power - accept it, respect it, and learn to harness it - you can use it to embody your full potential, and propel your life into the stratosphere. The purpose of stepping into your shadow is to step into wholeness.
@@TheTurinturumbar this is why it's important to integrate the shadow, not reject it. I can tell the three of us understand the cost of that. As Horus and Odin did as well.
For someone's first time listening to a Tool track - you Sir truly did a nice job articulating and expressing your thoughts. Now. enjoy the Tool rollercoaster.
I love that you were able to interpret and articulate my primordial feelings for this song into words. Great Zen for me this morning. Thanks my friend.
This is one of the main reasons rock is one of my favorite genres. Just all the obscure messages that you have to really take the time to think about. Knowing that some of my favorite bands can speak to the way I'm feeling or put words to it in the way I can't articulate makes me feel seen and appreciated. I love most genres but rock, for the most part, makes me go "yes, that's it! That's what I'm trying to say. And you feel, hear, see, think it too."
Maynard is a lyrical genius. He gives the the information and it’s up to you to figure it out. TOOL does not take you by the hand. They fly by and the listener has to hang on
I just gotta say that if you're gonna go down the tool rabbit hole, be ready and be strapped in. Because the ride ahead will most likely change your view on music forever
regarding shadow intergration, its about learning to be in charge of your own negatives as well as positives , the goal being a more positive interaction with reality. The shadow is all our own crap and is projected onto others in negative ways
This made my day! I was nervous by the thumbnail that you didn't like it. Tool is a Master Class in psychology and humanities wrapped in a shroud of dope music.
As someone who was deep into esoteric subjects before hearing this song I’d say it’s a pretty “standard” explanation of difference in the conscious and subconscious, but for a band to express it and make it sound good is definitely on another level.
I've been a Tool fan for ages and even now, after too many times to count hearing their songs, I still often times get different vibes and interpretations. Excellent reaction! Excited to see this expanding of your horizons. Love it! ✌️
Tools music goes beyond deep, lol. It’s hard to wrap your mind around it at first, lmao! I had the chance to see them live back in 2019 and they put on a very visual show. It’s amazing! Not to mention the music itself. Danny, the drummer is incredible. I would definitely recommend once you’re done listening to the lyric side of it, going back and just listening to the music itself.
Glad more people are starting to appreciate TOOL.. I Think you would like "Vicarious" By them, it's about how people love to watch horrible stuff as long as it's not happening to them.

When all knowing of yourself there are many benefits, it’s a constant struggle to hold and is never really a destination but in moments of my own mental clarity and subconscious I honestly was able to predict future events wether through dreams or through feeling. Might sound weird but the world of possibilities become minimal and narrowed down and opened up at the same time.

Ehh he did a lot of acid man back in the day
@@bosnow9221 he used to trip thou hardcore
@@mwaters421 really? I never heard or read that he ever did. Said he sinker a little pot and drinks a little wine. But maybe he did.
Your showing some good consciousness admitting you’re mostly unaware of what he’s writing about, but you can feel the energy he’s talking about as it makes you want to learn more.
Great reaction!
The artwork is done by Alex Grey, he's an amazing artist
Every song by Tool is a journey into the psyche. Very much appreciate the time you take to break down your take on it. Complete instrumental genius at work they are.
Anytime the song, makes you do research 7 seconds in, it's LIT.
Tool is what transient you bro
The goal of integrating the shadow is to realize you are the cause of all of your suffering. Your shadow is evil, and you must accept it, or you will push the evil onto others. Before you can be good, you must know the evil you are capable of.
It is that denial that is driving the cancel culture as it exists today.
Then you find out your shadow is your inner child.
Yes! acknowledge it, but don't let it win.
There is no band on Earth like Tool........ Absolutely incredible
The musicianship is also 10/10
I didn't know how to say this but yes, exactly. Well said.
Well said.
could we change that name? The "tool Army" gives me a lot of cringe, the same band ends up making fun of that name.
For real!!! Greatest drummer to EVER grace a drum set.
@@felipemaification to be fair, much of the Tool Army makes fun of it, too.
Scabs heal over old wounds. He picks to see the damaged part. He wants to heal that part. His shadow self.
You sir, got it. I wrote a paper in a psych class on this song in college. To understand who you truly are, you must uncover and expose your baser and subconscious self. For those will influence and partially make up your "seven layers of identity."
You're not dumb, you're learning.
Tool is my favorite band of all time 🖤
And you definitely don’t sound like an idiot!
their entire library is a meditation. I'll join the chorus of old tool heads in welcoming you aboard the spiral.
As someone who’s been on a spiritual journey of trying to be the best version of myself on the highest of levels, I think you did a flawless job understanding and really dissecting the complex topic he talks about through his lyrics. I’m fairly new to the channel but you’ve really earned a lot of my respect with this reaction. Much love brother ✊🏽
His goal is to do exactly what you did. Question everything and learn about everything. You have a deeper understanding than most.
"Think for yourself and question authority."
Wish he did more tool breakdowns. Love the excitement that he’s discovering with tool
I love how you are not afraid to try and interpret the lyrics meaning for your own self. Make it what you want to make it, especially if it helps contribute to growth in any way. Life is an internal journey. This is what Tool is!
Meanwhile here's Tool over here writing songs about Jungian theories of consciousness.
"This shit hit different, bruh". Lmao. Straight up best band ever.
lol Awesome. I remember feeling that way when I first them when I was a kid. I had been looking for something new that hit on every note for me and all we were getting was Nirvana and Pearl Jam, whom I also love, but they were quite it. Then found TOOL and was satiated. They've been my fav since. Always will be. Best band ever....
Tool is its own Genre
Brooooo, Stevie, you have to roll down the TOOL rabbit hole, it will inadvertently increase your consciousness..also, the band doesnt do drugs and they dont explain the music, all lyric videos are fan made, they are super deep and amazing, the entire discography, please please please start doing tool, like tool tuesday or whatever, you will thank us for suggesting it bc its that good, get it done son, lets go on this journey homie, giddiup
Awesome reaction man, been listening to Tool since I was 14, Aenima came out in 96 when I was 12, owned every single CD, definitely up there in my top 5 musical artists ever, amazing band, glad you enjoyed it, all their songs are on another level man, layers upon layers.
I agree a hundred percent with them being top five. But I'd say that they are top five of my favorites, but with that said.... BEST band of all time hands down. And they aren't my favorite, but if you put everything they do into consideration. And how effortless they do it, who else is even close. GREATEST ROCK BAND!!
First Metallica then Tool?
Damn dude, I already liked your channel and your selections, but now I'm committed lol
I truly think you'd like metal as a genre once you break the ice, it's very lyrical (the good one obviously), and I can tell the ice is starting to crack!
Want some cool Bad-ass sound and Bad-ass lyrics hit Pantera my guy, maybe start with Walk or even Cemetery Gates!
Or 5 minutes alone
I watch THIS video every couple months with Stevie's commentary. It's cleansing and humbling and unifying all at once. What a beautiful song.
Keep in mind there's hundreds or thousands of requests, and only so much as 24 hours in a day .. :)
Yup
If you can ever go to a tool concert, do it!!! I went to one about 15 years ago, and I can still remember how it made me feel. The whole stage is dark. The whole arena is dark except for giant screens that play all those trippy images that you see if their videos and album covers. Hearing the music live is incredible!!
Doesn’t matter what kind of music you listen to, or hell if you’ve never heard music at all. Tool hits you on a primal level
You have the best breakdown reaction for this song period.! You were definitely dialed in listening to this.
....as a long time fan, I'm glad you liked it brother.
If your impressed with the Stans just wait for us....TOOL ARMY!
Make sure to check out APC too🎶🤘

On that note, Deftones wouldn't be remiss. Perhaps... "Passenger"?
@@Liannin that whole “ white pony” album is wicked
@@bosnow9221 I mean, yeah, but my comment was specifically referring to the song to which MJK lends vocals, because it was relevant to the comment and video.
But yes. White Pony was phenomenal, especially when you look at older albums like Adrenaline or Around the Fur and you see how their sound has consistently graduated. Not changed, but aged like wine. Deftones is definitely one of those bands for me.
"The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek." ~Joseph Campbell
To integrate the darker parts of yourself, your shadow, you have to get super honest, and be willing to feel all the feels you're too afraid to experience because they're overwhelming. Too powerful. If you can tap into that power - accept it, respect it, and learn to harness it - you can use it to embody your full potential, and propel your life into the stratosphere.
The purpose of stepping into your shadow is to step into wholeness.
But don't do it foolhardy, there's a reason you fear that cave. Myth tells you even gods don't do it safely. Horus lost an eye doing it for example.
Dude you really break things down, this is what reaction channels should be like! Good stuff man!
SO IT BEGINS!!! WELCOME TO OUR WORLD,,,THE TOOL ARMYS WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!
As another discovers Tool, another angel screams to life
YO, don't stress bro. You totally got it. Welcome to Tool man, the more U listen to them, the more you'll love it.
Thanks for actually taking the time to research and understanding the lyrics, that's way more than any other reactors have done, dope reaction
Never clicked so fast in my life! Stevie on Tool?! 😁 💜💜💜
The Tool army is here!!! 🤟🏻
Maynard is a lyrical genius. He gives the the information and it’s up to you to figure it out. TOOL does not take you by the hand. They fly by and the listener has to hang on
I have been listening to tool for over 20 years and I have never see such a great breakdown! 👏
Tool is the best band ever formed
Best drummer.... two of the best guitarist ever and the best lead singer ever..... absolutely amazing band
@Juicey Kisses Adam Jones? Uhhhh 👌
I just gotta say that if you're gonna go down the tool rabbit hole, be ready and be strapped in. Because the ride ahead will most likely change your view on music forever
not just music.
regarding shadow intergration, its about learning to be in charge of your own negatives as well as positives , the goal being a more positive interaction with reality. The shadow is all our own crap and is projected onto others in negative ways
If you liked that one, you should check out parabol/parabola, two songs that flow into each other, then maybe Lateralus.
Ya Fn with TOOL now ......RESPECT BROTHER , every single tool song is like a rollercoaster ride well worth taking
This made my day! I was nervous by the thumbnail that you didn't like it. Tool is a Master Class in psychology and humanities wrapped in a shroud of dope music.
Stevie is over here swingin for the fences with Tool! You picked a hell of a band to start with man... props.
The simplest explanation for this song is evolving. Growing to the next step in our DNA sequence.
Love it! ✌️
To answer your question regarding whether the Tool Army know what he's talking about, the answer is yes. We're an odd kind hardcore nerd.
I'm betting that Stevie would really like a lot of stuff off The Fragile. Both lyrically and musically.
Bro! I am so blessed to find ya channel yo’! Good to see someone who actually listens to bars.
Glad more people are starting to appreciate TOOL.. I Think you would like "Vicarious" By them, it's about how people love to watch horrible stuff as long as it's not happening to them.
Stevie you are on the right track! Glad to see you expanding your music reviews. Man, you have a talent for reading between the lines. You gonna reach that 46+2
There is not a single song by this band that can't teach you something if you look hard enough
Even the hidden tracks?
I'm mostly not being snarky, what do you think?
@@scottmatznick3140 Those have to be an exception lol.

You just opened up the Tool, A Perfect Circle, Puscifer trinity.
You started out perfectly...Headphones and lyric video. A must for first time hearing all of Tool's songs.
Tool was the last band I saw before the pandemic. On every song live (including this one) everyone just sat. And watched. No phones or singing. Just watching them do what they do. They are a genre of their own.
