Welcome to the Tool army! :-) You hit the nail on the head right away - Tool is one of the only bands I can think of where you actually feel smarter after listening to them. The singer (Maynard James Keenan) loves to write complex esoteric lyrics on bizarre subjects not usually found in rock songs. 46&2 is actually based on a concept conceived by Carl Jung and later expounded upon by esoteric researcher Drunvalo Melchizedek (yeah, I never heard of him either) that the next stage of human evolution will result in the addition of two chromosomes, resulting in the evolved humans having a total of 46 (instead of the current 44) autosomes and 2 sex chromosomes. The "shadow" is also a Jungian concept - the part of the self that one hates, fears and oppresses. Don't worry, most of us don't really understand it either - it just gives us a ton of stuff to think about. And I think Maynard wants it that way - the struggle to understand the meaning in abstractly expressed lyrics is where the art lies.

Played a lot together and I think even a few were even roommates. “Many of the choicest quotes in the passage belong to Morello, who reveals that Tool’s “Part of Me” and Rage’s “Killing in the Name” originated during the same jam session.”
There is a lyric video that also explains the concept of the song during the instrumental parts. It is worth seeking out. This band literally takes you to school.

I'm not sure how many times i have heard these songs but i feel like i get something new from them every time and just love them more and more.

The laughter at the end, after your soul and your mind rejoice in finding the key that unlocks the padded cell room door that has kept your consciousness imprisoned and ignorant of the depth of the unknown that we all know must be there. Now your journey begins, step over the threshold of your limited and stifled misunderstandings. This is no welcome, this is your freedom, this is the universe beyond mortal existence. Your soul has been screaming to you about his world, your mind heard it but could not understand the screams. Tool is the key. Step through the doorway, leave the asylum behind you, take your soul’s hand and walk, question, listen. Now, you have learned to swim.
Appreciate it! There's a track called "Know your enemy" by Rage against the machine with Tool's vocalist Maynard. You gotta do the live version of that track to watch Zack and Maynard tear the place down! Cheers!!
Live at the Olympic (know your enemy) is one of my favorite rage tunes, don't guess I've ever heard Maynard heading it up. Even after all this time, 46 and 2 still still just ahead of me
Tool released 46 & 2 in 1998. It's been some time! I get chills every time I listen to the song. I'm a Tool fan and 46 &2 is one of my faves... so that's a lot of listens and this song still has the same effect. There's a beautiful power in music. Also, I know everyone recommends stuff and I probably did on your Pot reaction but check Reflection, Pneuma and Lateralus.
Amazing song. The meaning behind the lyrics is thought provoking, at a minimum. It's fun to ponder on it for a while. What's better is understanding the meaning and assimilating that. Than you'll be that much closer to 46&2.
If you love to think and not have stuff spelled out, you will love TOOL. Also the long intros will grow on you. Seeing how your face changed and about 2/3 of the way through with the look of astonishment is awesome. Never gets old watching people discover TOOL. Spiral out!
"Thats going to be my favorite tool song" Ha, we'll see about that. Theres more than one masterpiece in their collection Ive been a tool song for a long time and this is one of those songs I still don't really get completely.
I can listen to instrumental all day, I used to love lyrics but when tool can play a riff that sounds like words then Maynard comes in with some words rhythmically matched perfectly its soul epic. Tool has always taken me to a place beyond words, a roller coaster of synesthesia!
Dude, TOOL rules!! These guys are in their late 50s and the drummer Danny Carey, is 60!!! They've been killing it since 1990!! Rage Against the Machine rocks but nothing like TOOL does!! It's so entertaining to watch someone who didn't grow up listening to stuff like Tool ! Your reactions are stellar! So glad to see someone change right in front of your eyes!! Awesome!
man i remember watching the music videos for Sober and Schisim on MTV when i was a teenager god the sense of dread and foreboding those gave me instantly got me hooked on Tool. Because of what i was feeling at the time as an Outsider. I also loved RATM as a teen but never had the albums.
This will be your favorite tool song until the next one. You react just like I did when I first heard this song. It captivated me in ways I never thought possible.
I'll be subscribing for two reasons. #1 because I love Tool and I'm here to support anyone who also appreciates their talent. #2 because I live the fact you really like to dive deep into lyrics and meaning. Tool is one of the best bands to do this with because Maynard is very exacting with everything he does, so every single lyric has a meaning and purpose in the song. Unlike many other bands who either sing complete nonsense or have "filler" lyrics that just go to the beat when they can't bring their message across. Everything Tool does has a purpose, that's why their lyrics are so fun to dig into. This song has a lot of psychology and biology references. 46 and 2 is a reference to our chromosomes, and in my way of looking at it, when he says they are "just ahead" of him, I think that's a reference to him feeling like a new person once he works through all his shit. The "shadow" is a psychology term for the repressed parts of our subconscious. It's what holds all the parts of us that we can't accept or that we reject. We all aim to see ourselves as good or at the very least, right, so our mind has a natural defence of repressing anything that challenges that. Our shadow is where you will see the worst of ourselves. So Maynard is singing about going through all of it, accepting it as part of him, and using it as a catalyst for change. The metamorphosis. I love the line "contemplate what I've been clinging to" because it really illustrates exactly what he is doing, a deep dive into his own identity and coming to terms with who he is and why he does the things he does. I think this is something we should all strive for as human beings. We do spring clean outs of our homes, but we should also be doing some self "cleaning". Let go of all the things holding us back, accept the parts of ourselves that we try so hard to deny, evaluate our priorities and position in life, and come out the other side of this fresh and clean. A rebirth.
Been a tool fan since 96 and they're just amazing. Everything is cerebral and takes a lot to digest. Look up the studies of carl jung, the ego, and the shadow self. Think of a Caterpillar becoming a butterfly.
You're going to have to have patience with Tool's intros, because they can be quite long but make no mistake that each song is meant to be interpretated by each listener separately in their own perspective! Welcome to "The Rabbit Hole"! The only thing left is to "Spiral Out"! Love your reaction!
if he's hard to hear lyrically no shame in doing lyric videos, he tends to treat his vocals like just another instrument so they can get mix in a bit especially with all the polyrhythms going on. great reaction though, cant wait for more.
It's not about being like everyone else but giving it a try and that's what you did. The long instrumentals are my favorite part. They build up, tear it apart, rebuild, tear apart and leave in an epic way. It's a journey. With the right mindset, you'll go in and enjoy it more. One thing I've learned is to manage expectations. And as you give any music more listens and time, it grows on you. Almost always. I've done this and grown to like other genres. I grew up mainly Hip-Hop with some Rock here and there but mainstream stuff. When I started listening to more Rock and then delve in Metal... That was it. I started getting into Metal so much more. I then go into some electronic music too! Now I listening to classic bands I never listened to. Soon gonna start with Jazz. Too much to learn and take away as a Hip-Hop, I know that much. This is why I gotta get into it.
I grew up listening to a lot of types of music and I still do. Tool's music was something I immediately liked after the first time I listened to it. Yeah, the lyrics are cryptic as hell on a lot of their songs lol, but they get you thinking and pondering wtf they are really trying to say.
Welcome bro haha mystery-filled, awesome journey ahead! I was introduced to Tool when I was 16, a cook at work asked if I listened to Tool, I said "no", and he dropped his pan, ran out to his car, came back with the CD for Lateralus and said "just keep listening." I did not get it at first, but after about the third or fourth listen, the epiphany happened and it all clicked. They have been my favorite band since that day. Pleased to have you in Tool Army (you're in it already, you just don't know it yet.) BTW in RATM's song "Know Your Enemy" the singer for Tool (Maynard James Keenan, the two bands have always been friends, they came up together) sings an awesome part in it. Excited to see you explore.
I loved your reaction! At first I was thinking, Ok, he is doubting Tool even though you’ve reacted to another song of theirs. Then you started in on the long intro, but then… it clicked! You understand there is something incredible here and you’ve barely scratched the surface. One of my favorite Tool reactions so far!

Tool’s catalog is quite broad. You can go as deep as you want. A little something for everyone. I understand the trepidation with their longer intros but they really set the mood to take you on a journey, and yes headphones. I would suggest Right in Two or Reflection if you’re looking for something chill.
Everything from Tool is going to be a masterpiece. I missed their last show on Halloween a few years ago. They still a band as far as i know. Been listening since mid 90s.

Dude. Watching your expressions was amazing. I have been listening to them since undertow came out. Been wondering about the meaning of some of their songs for like 20 years. Mad respect for you not going straight in a short cutting the meanings. You may need to cheat on this one though. BTW, most Tool Army is Rage Army too. I was exposed to both bands around the same time and they each have their own place in my soul.
My guy I'm a lifelong Tool fan and this was the realest reaction on YT. I love seeing people's face when they hear Tool for the first time, they all make the same face lol. Peace ✌
Prepare to have your mind expanded by us rock fans man. “Long intros”, the movement and detail of the instrumentation, and the depth of the actual music itself, not just the words, is what we’re all about. I love lyrics and bars too but the music is a whole world in itself.
You don't like long intros. That's cool. Thanks for being honest. I like them sometimes, but I need lyrics too. I am a huge Tool fan and I don't mind as much when they do it.
It's about literally evolving as he's still alive. 'Forty-Six & Two' refers to the number of human chromosomes plus two more, which would make him something "more" human. Or not human at all. But that's what the lyrics make the song about; Shedding skin, searching for clues, the change consume him, etc... He's basically slowly changing into something else
It’s actually an homage to Karl Jung. 46 and 2 being a representation of our human nature plus the extra two “ chromosomes “ which represent our greed, and malicious nature that comes about from the external world. The shadow was a cornerstone of Junganian philosophy, whereas one cannot truly know one’s self without accepting all the greed malice selfishness and violence. The best man is one that knows he is capable of murder but also knows those are negative traits that should not be acted upon. So it’s a double metaphor because Maynard is a puzzle maker. Lol

Little concerned with your dislike of long intros because they have a lot of those. I think the more you get into their sound and appreciate the music, you'll enjoy the long intros. I honestly didn’t know this! I’m glad they rock with each other
They both came out as something unique after a time of stagnation in music.
Fun fact, Maynard sings in a Rage Song, Know your enemy. The band members have several connections between them
There is a lyric video that also explains the concept of the song during the instrumental parts. It is worth seeking out. This band literally takes you to school.
46 & 2. We have 46 chromosomes. The plus 2 chromosomes is the next evolution of consciousness and understanding of yourself.
Loved seeing your facial expressions as Tool flowed through you at the end. I saw the moment you were hooked. Tool Army for life.
Yea this one got me
TOOL= PHILOSOPHY
The thing with tool, atleast for me is that I only liked a few songs right off the bat. The more you listen to it, the more you hear, and the more you really start to enjoy and appreciate it. I'm not sure how many times i have heard these songs but i feel like i get something new from them every time and just love them more and more.
Definitely true. I'm a couple months into discovering Tool for the first time, and my "playlist" number of Tool tracks has quadrupled in that time.
yup, went from completley oblivious to super fan over the course of a few months. Once you start to jive with the complex rhythms it just starts to sound amazing
Make sense
@@jakefromstatefarm1405 a few months from now you’ll look back and realize how much more you not only enjoy their music, but understand it as well. Tool is a band that grows on you the more you listen.
The only problem is that they’ll eventually consume you.
I totally understand this comment. Almost without fail, any Tool song gets better with subsequent listens. I wasn't a big fan of 46 and 2 at first, but I still continue to like it more even after dozens of times hearing it.
In the beginning when you say "let's see what they saying..." I'm all oh shit. I'm about to see someone's mind get blown the fuck up.
Danny Carey got in his head when the breakdown started. One of the best rock drummers ever.
Ima have to remember that name
Danny Carey is now the best living drummer.
Watch Danny movie lay Pneuma, live. Intricate , majestic and incomparable
You have something a lot of other reactors don't have, you are REAL. It is refreshing on a platform of dollar store clones. Thank you for the content, hope you hit a million soon.
“Oh my god! I think listening to tool is gonna make me smarter”
This statement alone got me exited to see you react to the rest of their discography. Let’s goooo 👽
I can listen to tool songs 1000s of times and every time it still hits the same.
"In humans, each cell normally contains 23 pairs of chromosomes, for a total of 46."
Humans are 23 x 2. 46 x 2 represents evolving to me.
Exactly right. This is referencing Timothy Leary's concept of "futants" (future mutant). Source: album liner notes.
@@audreyabbey6605 I thought it was a Drunvalo Melchizedeck concept.
Dam no wonder I was lost, that’s deep as hell
I think the chromosome theory is silly but the self growth stuff is profound
It's from Carl Jung the great psychologist
Cheers!!
No way! I thought I reacted to that song but either way I gotta do that live show ASAP
@@MichelleShow So glad to hear that bro'!
Live at the Olympic (know your enemy) is one of my favorite rage tunes, don't guess I've ever heard Maynard heading it up.
Even after all this time, 46 and 2 still still just ahead of me

Two different live with Maynard.
Tool in a good set of earphones is a damn near a full sensory experience.

Anytime an artist makes you think and reflect, any genre, deserves flowers. That's why we listen. That's what it's about. ART
Spiral out!
Welcome to the TOOL Army my man. That moment when you realized just how amazing the instrumentation is.
"Thats going to be my favorite tool song"
Ha, we'll see about that. Theres more than one masterpiece in their collection
Ive been a tool song for a long time and this is one of those songs I still don't really get completely.
I saw it happen. The tingle in the brain. It still gets me every time on this song. Keep up the good work brother!
Your Tool reactions are so good, I really wish you would do more. They've got so much excellent music.
The depths of this song is unreal. Literally everytime I think I've got it figured out there's just more layers.
This will be your favorite tool song until the next one. You react just like I did when I first heard this song. It captivated me in ways I never thought possible.
Old Tool fan here! You rock brother!
If you like metaphors and meaning you found the right band. 👀🔥🔥
Love it
Yes the pot by tool is metaphor plus metaphor multiplied by proverbs
Ima look that up
YES...shadow attributes, dark night of the soul, archetypes. They are genius
Tool songs are like listening to stories. The landscape is often set out for you first before you get acquainted with the plot.
You're going to have to have patience with Tool's intros, because they can be quite long but make no mistake that each song is meant to be interpretated by each listener separately in their own perspective! Welcome to "The Rabbit Hole"! The only thing left is to "Spiral Out"! Love your reaction!
Let’s get it I’m ready to hear more
Yessss!!! Lateralus is a must with it's Fibonacci sequences. A masterpiece among many by tool
@@MichelleShow dude you gotta listen to lateralus
He might really like A Perfect Circle if he wants to jump right into the grove.
46 protein strands in DNA.
From that you can piece together everything else.
if he's hard to hear lyrically no shame in doing lyric videos, he tends to treat his vocals like just another instrument so they can get mix in a bit especially with all the polyrhythms going on. great reaction though, cant wait for more.
Yeah that's what i was think. MichelleShow probably won't look up the lyrics but i probably will
I tried to find the lyric vid but couldn’t for this one, I had no problem hearing this one though I caught every word.
The texts of tool are deep af. But the music I can only describe as funky metal, all over the place and perfectly executed.
You are a perfect candidate fot TOOL thank you so much for opening yourself up to TOOL !!!! C ant wait til l a new one !
You better keep that TOOL up!! You reactions are awesome, especially when it’s something as iconic as TOOL, AND it’s outside your wheelhouse 🔥👍💪🍻
Yessirrr I got u
I loved your reaction! At first I was thinking, Ok, he is doubting Tool even though you’ve reacted to another song of theirs. Then you started in on the long intro, but then… it clicked! You understand there is something incredible here and you’ve barely scratched the surface. One of my favorite Tool reactions so far!
This was a dope reaction. I love how real you are about your feelings about the music you come across. I’m not going to explain anything to you and let you figure it out on your own, I can tell you have that sort of curious mind.
I can’t wait for your next reaction to them. Take it easy.
Facial expressions are exemplified by your unique video skills creating a mesmerizing effect as you expertly project your inner joy for us all to share. Bravo.
Tool’s catalog is quite broad. You can go as deep as you want. A little something for everyone. I understand the trepidation with their longer intros but they really set the mood to take you on a journey, and yes headphones. I would suggest Right in Two or Reflection if you’re looking for something chill.
Will check those out
I second Right in Two. It’s another journey that the lyrics and the music itself are interwoven and what a story it tells!!
Yaaaaay, how exciting! Always a welcome for new TOOL Army additions 🥰 so fun! I love seeing that joy and surprise again.
Everything from Tool is going to be a masterpiece. I missed their last show on Halloween a few years ago. They still a band as far as i know. Been listening since mid 90s.
RAGE ARMY AND TOOL ARMY ARE HAND IN HAND BRO!
F*#K YES, MORE TOOL!
Something about these videos let’s one re-experience the joy of finding these songs for the first time . Well done sir
So happy to see your reaction. Even when you weren't thrilled with the start, I just smiled...🤓 I knew you would be loving this TOOL tune 🎶🎶🎶. So happy at the end!!!
Your so expressive w/yr facial expressions! I LOVE watching yr face n what u said. Ive watched this DOZENS OF TIMES over the years STILL.........luv u
Dude, love the reaction. I've been a fan a long time and totally wish I could listen for the first time again. Thanks for the great watch!
More comin soon
You're exactly right. The best music makes you think and you come to your own conclusions. This is what great art is all about. I love it👍
It's about literally evolving as he's still alive.
Lol
*Carl Jung. Sorry.
Your smile at the end was worth waiting for... Glad you found Tool.
Vicarious and Descending are worth checking out. Cheers
Just copped Tool tickets for their show in January, I'm hype af, this'll be my 4th time seein em live, shit is like a religious experience

So glad you did this song! I thought it would be in your lane. Sober or Schism would be a good next pick I think.

New subscriber to see more Tool reactions. I appreciate your interest in good lyrics and you'll find that with Tool. Little concerned with your dislike of long intros because they have a lot of those. I think the more you get into their sound and appreciate the music, you'll enjoy the long intros. It builds suspense and normally by the end of the song you wished there was more. Then you'll appreciate the longer intros. Great review!
Aenema!!! Sounds great and the lyrics will hit hard with you. This will be your favorite tool song
The shadow self. Maynard’s affinity with Carl Jung is very prevalent here. Great video brother.

Maaaan!
Forty six & 2 was the first song I ever heard from tool way back in 1995. To this day it has been the greatest moment I’ve ever had…. The instant that sound of the bass line made contact with my eardrums, I knew then I was part of something very special… I became the newest recruit to the TOOLBAND ARMY. Welcome on board my friend, allowing yourself to be vulnerable when listening to tool is where all of the magic happens deep within. It is a pure stimulating incredible sensation that penetrates each and every sense in your body leaving you in a state of euphoria.
This is probably my favorite Tool album. I love them all, but this was my first. Hooker With A Penis and Aenima always make me laugh, Jimmy gets me in the feels, and Pushit with Maynard's soaring vocals. But the whole album is amazing, of course.
