"don't just call me pessimist, try and read between the lines..." is probably the most important line in the song. Not so much hate as it is frustration and a hope for change, like a parent with their child.

    • @PrimePhilosophy
      @PrimePhilosophy 2 года назад +21

I agree on it being the most important line.. here's my take on it copy pasted from my comment above.
What I see between the lines is Maynard projecting his own internal conflicts and self pity under the guise of hatred for his observable reality. When you start hating so many things you're seeing, you gotta realise at some stage that you're the common denominator.
As an artist, by putting his name on this expression he can attribute this reality as his own creation and therefore acknowledge the expression as a projection of himself, allowing him to more objectively use it to reflect on himself, and in turn understand/control his internal conflicts better.
Observable reality is after all just an illusionary manifestation of ones own consciousness. And Maynard is pretty switched on to that kind of stuff.
The title of the song also correlates with this analysis, derived from the words anima, meaning soul, and enema, being a procedure for flushing out and cleansing internal blockages or irritatioNs, with the extraction sometimes being analysed to determine a course of better health.
Considering all that, it makes me wonder if he was really insecure or nervous about swimming at some stage of his life, as he seems to be telling himself to learn how to swim over and over.

the real genius of the world's greatest painters was in their ability to convey meaning beyond words. that's all art, but theirs was particularly "high". holographic. psychedelic. sacred. visuals that "cut" through the consciousness of a collective, like no "thing" else. this was such a powerful achievement (esp at the time) bc most of the world's population was illiterate.
this is how tool makes their music. accessible invitation. uninitiateds welcomed. TOOL does not require twelve years straw sweeping tibetan temples before imparting their message. there is no "word to guide me in". there is no spoon. the map is not the territory. it is infinitely more likely that we are in fact over-thinking, over-analyzing ...everything. all we think we know, but absolutely do not.
("to think for yourself you must question authority and learn how to put yourself in a state of vulnerable, open-mindedness; chaotic, confused, vulnerability, to inform yourself.") we need to question "authority". esp of mind. watch "things" die. long-short: words get in the way. the real !@#$ is in the music. TOOL themselves have said as much.

The whole album is full of hard goodbyes; to places, friends, drugs, and heroes. They all become effigies to sacrifice. And, like the feelings evoked during the final track 3rd Eye hints toward, its only after you have experienced that sacrifice that the reward may come. You’ll see a ton of support on any tool reaction you do cause all us tool fans are chasing the dragon. Just went through the reactions you did and it was pretty fun to see your progression of “how do I even bob my head to this” to “fuck it I’m a fan.” Happens to most people who listen to it with an open mind and it’s nice to see someone doing that. Good shit my man.

He also says not to call him a pessimist and to read between the lines..

Nothing to do with swimming, it’s about not drowning in mediocrity. That’s probably the single most hated attribute Maynard and Hicks have awoken me to when I found them. I knew Tool since the first LP in the 90s, but didn’t discover Bill till a decade after he’d passed on. That’s when I revisited what Tool really was contributing.

Check out their song Lateralus from their album of the same name. It’s one of the most creative songs ever made and my favorite of all time by any band. It implements the Fibonacci sequence, which is a mathematical pattern found in nature in how spirals form in plants and animals and even the Milky Way galaxy. The song uses that metaphor for growth and even implements that pattern in the syllables used and in the time signatures and more. One, one, two, three, five, eight, thirteen, and so on. Spiral out! I’m loving your Tool journey so far 🌀

Yeah, he is saying "fuck LA". He hated the city so much he moved to Arizona. But he also says "don't just call me pessimist, try and read between the lines", so while he's pointing out all the bad shit about LA, he wants to see things get better.
Your next Tool song reaction should be Lateralus ☺️👍

  • @oler00

Tool is legit as fuck man, it's a "thinking man's" kinda band and I know you had mentioned you liked lyrics that make you think. You should check out the song Right In Two next I feel. Absolutely use lyric videos if you can or have the lyrics up so you can follow along with the song. I was never super into Tool when I was younger because I was so angry I got into Slipknot and "heavier" shit first. As I've gotten older my musical tastes have shifted and over the past few years I jam to them all the time!!! If you're a cannabis user like myself, you should just listen to the whole Lateralus album from start to finish in a dimly lit room with some headphones on and something to smoke on. My GF and I recently did that with edibles and she was blown away. She's from India so she had no idea what to expect given all the shit I've had her listen to haha. Great reaction bud, and you got a new sub from me today. Have a great day and thanks for sharing!!

This was back in the day when MJK was pretty angry about a lot of things - shifty and underhanded LA business people in the recording industry being one. Tool puts their stuff together in a way that's meant to be listened to in the order they put it on the CD.
It's hard to listen to a whole album when you're doing a reaction of one song at a time...
But there's a "next level" when you can listen to the whole CD at once.
Their transitions from song to song are a whole new level of art.

It’s cool that people make reaction videos because it introduces people to new music. Just remember to sit back and listen. Don’t talk. Just listen and let the music take you on a journey. Ride the spiral till the end. It may just go where no one’s been.

This is the same reaction I had when I heard this song at 16 in the back of my friend's car. They played it and I honestly feel like that's when I became an actual, real life person. I asked them to play it again, they did, and I've never stopped listening to it. I'm 36 now, I took my 15 year old son to his first concert last Friday, Tool. He says he's a fan now. I only hope I did for him what was done for me twenty years ago, opened up a world of music with meaning and such a deep, deep sense of human that wakes me up, shakes me up, and never fully lets me rest on this mortal coil. Spiral out.

This song is a tribute to the Late comedian Bill Hicks who died in 1994 from Cancer at a young age. He had a bit called Arizona Bay, where he talked about the shitty things of living in LA. Maynard, the singer of Tool, also feels the same about the LA and wrote this song.
