First: Don't apologize for sharing your heart. Second: My dad raised me to understand that a song can have different meanings, not only different from the writers intent to the listeners interpretation, but also different from one person to the next and even different meanings for the same person at different times in their lives. Therefore I try to never tie a song down to a specific meaning, I like to leave it open and get every drop of teachings out of it that I can.

When asked about this song in an interview, the only thing Maynard would say is that his son's name is Devo H. So we can assume that the song is about his son (which is also evident by the line "My blood before me begs me open up my heart again"). My interpretation is basically that Maynard is voicing his fears about whether or not he can overcome his past and his current lifestyle in order to become the kind of person that he needs to be in order to be a good father.
But Maynard has also stated that his lyrics don't necessarily determine what their songs are about. He said that his lyrics are basically his own interpretation of the music that the other band members presented to him, and he has encouraged everyone to derive their own meanings from the music, rather than to get too hung up on the intent of his lyrics. So Smokey is onto something as far as that goes.
As far as an Alex Grey tattoo goes, he actually has listed some conditions that you have to follow in order to legally use his artwork in a tattoo, so you should check out his website to learn more about that. But in short, he requires you to find a tattoo artist that can do his art justice, and he requires you to provide him with a photo of the finished product (which he reserves the right to publish or use however he wants).

H is my favorite song from Tool for a variety of reasons. Back when the internet was low key there was no easy interpretation to find about their music, but to me as a young guy in love facing loss, it was about loss of what you are and fear of what you’ll become. This song still makes me tear up thinking about who I was and am and the death of that self that will surely ensue as I change and grow.

Been a Tool fan since 7 years old(thanks to my older brother). This song has always had a special place for me. As with most Tool songs, there are multiple meanings, but it really is your own interpretation. It has always had a feeling about a person to me. A few interviews with him have suggested it may be about his son. Being a dad myself, I can see it and feel it every time I hear this song., which carries even more weight since becoming a dad. I really appreciate your interpretation and feelings on it. I love their new stuff, and have innovative they are, but this song will always be at the top of the list when it comes to Tool.

    It is not about heroin.
    I was told….
Maynard’s first son, Devo H. Keenan was born in 1995, a year before this song was released.
Two years later, during the 1997 Lollapooloza tour Maynard announced "This next song is about having children, do any of you have kids? It is amazing how much they change your life isn't it?" before playing H.
    Lyrics - Interpretation
“Whats coming through is alive” - Giving Birth
“My blood before me begs me open up my heart again” - Devo, his blood, wants to be loved, all children do.
“I feel this coming over like a storm again” - All of the emotions that being a father brings.
“I am too connected to you, slip away to fade away, Days away I still feel you touching me, changing me, and considerately killing me” - Devo is connected to him, days away.. while on tour waiting to come home to see him, killing me.. he misses him so much it is killing him.
“And as the snake is drowned and as i looked in his eyes my fear begins to fade recalling all of the times i could have cried then, I should have cried then” - He has been scared of being a father but as he looks at his son the fear fades, he should of cried when his child was born because he was so happy.
“And as the snake is drowned and as i look in your eyes my fear begins to fade recalling all of the times i have died, and will die its alright i don't mind” - MJK is now speaking to Devo, saying I’m not scared anymore I’m not scared your going to hurt me, and make me die inside, and all the times in the future that you will do it, i don’t mind. I love you. You are my son.

This is my favorite reaction by far. I listened to this song back when the album came out and loved it at 13yrs. old. However it wasn’t till I was in the eye of my addition to meth at 29 that I listened again to H. & I cried and had a deeper connection to the song & lyrics & reacted just like you. I’m on my 3rd year of sobriety and I walk my path of helping others. I want to congratulate you on yours. Lots of love guys and madd blessings to ya! 🙏🏽🕊

I hope you continue well on your journey with sobriety. Maynard's other band A Perfect Circle have several songs about that (their album "Thirteen Steps" is all about it) like "The Outsider" or "The Package". And if you want a truly amazing song regarding addiction, try out "Hurt" by either Nine Inch Nails or Johnny Cash if you haven't. If you really want to cry, listen to the Johnny Cash version.
Tool encourages people to interpret songs as they need/want to fit their own lives. And just from the sound of the song, this one is definitely one of my favorites. At the end of the day, the most general sense of this song is that there is a bad thing in your past that you're trying to move past to become a better person in the future. Despite that, I do want to say what the song most likely means to Maynard, and what it's come to mean to me as a father.
His son's middle name is "H". Maynard also apparently did not have a great relationship with the father he was forced to live with after his mother became paralyzed. It affected who he grew up to become, and likely how he feared he would be as a father. This song is all about the birth of his son and how it made him want to be a better person and father. All the talk about "the snake" is about the venomous relationship with his father and how it poisoned him, and "my blood" in the song is his son, "my blood before me begs me open up my heart again". The metaphor of "considerately killing me" is not a literal death, but a death of who he is as a person. His becoming a father is killing who he used to be to make for a new person, and helped him kill "the snake". I think most people who care for their children experience something similar.

You hear a note you never noticed before or catch a new meaning in a lyric, like Smokey said, layers. Beyond genius! And I absolutely LOVE you guys' reactions to them. Alex Grey sells his own merch on his site. It's mostly to support Alex and Alyssa Grey's creation that is the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors. It's a dope place outside NYC that has nature and rooms to stay in. They don't sell the drugs but people go there to trip and connect with earth and all that spiritual stuff. I need to go one day. Sorry rambling.

What a great reaction!! You guys both hit the nail on the head! Nice to be follow you guys' Tool journey. Hey what would be really cool is if you'd resume the song discussions in the beginning of each video of the next (Tool)song reaction, at that point you might've listened to it few more times and even done some research/googling about it, just a thought. But yeah ofc you're right in that the songs can have different meaning for everyone, that's basically the whole point as to why Maynard traditionally never released official lyrics, he wants his vocals to be received just like another musical instrument, I'd say he's pretty damn successful ✊

Wings for Marie 1 & 2, Pushit (Salival version), as well as a few others. This is one of those rare bands that can elicit that emotional response. different songs hit different people. Do Not Apologize. Be True. Be Honest. And most of all, Enjoy the journey! There is no one like them. There will never be another TOOL. Wings for Marie, and 10,000 Days (Wings Part II), there ate alot of emotions that can be evoked from Tool entirely, but these two, because they were so personal to Maynard, hit incredibly hard. If you guys never knew, his mother Judith passed away in 2003 after being paralyzed for nearly 27 years (10,000 days), so these songs were about her. Over 17 minutes with both songs combined, maybe one day you'll give those two a reaction in succession perhaps. Love the vids, guys.

In regards to Hollywood's comments on this song, I want to mention the title track 'Undertow'. It's a harder hitting song, like much of the Undertow album. From my understanding it's about giving in to the addiction. The final lyric of the track is "Euphoria". If you wanted to continue down this particular rabbit hole.

I was born in 1990, my much older brother was born in 1978 and I remember hearing this on cassette(!) from his room when I was a few years old. I have much of my music to thank him for. I should mention we are from poland, so in like 94-95 you technically could get foreign records, but they were only SOMETIMES in cellar shops. Something as niche as tool? fucking impossible. he got it, he liked it and he transferred it to me. I was like 8 years old and I was a tool fan because in the sea of sound this was something that was recognizably different.
