Tool Army Here,( H ) is not about drugs it is about the birth of Maynard's son and his fear of passing on the cycle of abuse. He is trying to be a better person/father by not allowing the past to not color the Man/Father he wants to be. The snake is the past. I think you would like TOOL (Parabol/Parabola) this is another beautiful song.
The first time I heard this song (back in 2003), the line "What's holding up is a mirror" always bothered me 'cause I could not relate that to something real... until I read your explanation. It makes sense now, so thanks!
When has Maynard ever said his father abused him?? My impression was always that he attributes his good work ethic to his father and thanks him for that. They are not that close but their relationship has been far from abusive.
This could have been titled "H" because Maynard's son Devo has the middle name of H (not an initial - that's the whole middle name). He talks of how his son and his wife have no hate but he wants to lash out at them because he has been abused. He speaks of how he refuses to give into these temptations. One of the deepest songs ever written.
Agreed . Love this Tool trip but I'm thinking a flip to Steely Dan the album Aja in it's entirety . Ive had people listen to it and be like why haven't I been listening to this!?!
H is a homage to his son. Maynard's dad was a dick. A monster. Maynard is afraid that monster lives within him. When he saw his son, his snake was drowned. He, truly, loved for the first time when he saw his son born.
Down the rabbit hole she goes. Welcome ! It's fun watching reactions to what the tool army has been listening to for years. Right in two is a must listen!!!!
My dear there is absolutely no need to apologize for wishing to listen to more Tool. The yearning is understandable and expected. Nice hearing it through a fresh set of ears...thank you. PEACE
I love your reactions. You're a very analytical and intelligent person, I can tell. I can offer a little insight as to what the general consensus is on the meaning of H., if you will. H. is the middle name (not initial, but actual name) of Maynard James Keenan's (singer) son and lyrically the song revolves around Maynard's emotions about becoming a father. The great thing about how he writes this song, though, is how it can be open to any meaningful interpretation. As for Forty Six & Two, you pretty much hit the nail on the head regarding it's meaning and usage of Jungian psychology. I'm going to sub to you two and I look forward to some more Tool reactions. Cheers!
Right in two!! You'll love it! I love watching your reactions! It is like falling in love with Tool all over again!! Keep going... do more and the Tool Army will follow. Good video! A million thumbs up!!
First time I heard tool I was 14 years old, was undertow, didn't sleep all night. Jammed on headphones til daylight. They changed my life. Made me a thinker that watches the envelope bend.
"As I look in your eyes My fear begins to fade Recalling all of the times I have died And will die It's all right I don't mind" It is definitely about the birth of a child and the fear of becoming a father figure. Snake - fear, old personality.
H is about his son, and his own abuse as a child, “what’s holding up is a mirror” (being his own child held up in front of him, and being a mirror of himself) “the snake behind me hisses” (being his own old self and not wanting to be like the person that abused him and that cycle) “days away I still feel you touching me changing me” (the touch from his own child effecting him and changing him for the better and killing his old self) amazing song.
There is a well done lyric video that intersperses the Jungian ideas as well as an explanation of the meaning of 46 & 2 . Great reactions. You got my subscription.
I've heard that Useful Idiot was a joke they put on there to make it sound like you're supposed to turn the record over - when you could still get vinyl. Love this band and your reactions.
There are no better reactions than to watch someone become a Tool fan and reinforce what you knew for so many years. Can't wait to watch the rest of your videos. Well done.
Wings for Marie 1 & 2. Extremely powerful and emotional songs about the journey of his mothers death and his journey through his emotions. Tool is just on another level. Listen to all their music in your off time. Truely one of the greatest bands ever
All their song are open to interpretation...could be about relationships...religion...society...personal experiences...addiction...anything and everything...that's the beauty of tool...been a huge tool fan for 25 years...looking forward to see your journey!! Subbed for this!
Tool is music that brings on and lends it self to introspection. When I feel I'm not acting right I put Tool on and inevitably I find myself thinking and seeing that maybe I am not the easiest person to get along with and looking at things through others point if view and I truly think it's made me a better and more understanding person!
It’s December of 2022 and I just want you to know that a couple of years ago you guys helped me through Covid more than you know just want to say y’all deserve more subscribers and thank you so much
Loved your reaction there is something so satisfing to watching someone new to TOOL enjoying them for the very first time,i can already see their growing on you too so welcome to the TOOL army Initum.
Just found Tool a couple of months ago, first time hearing H. Liked it a lot. Addicted to 46 & 2 for the past couple of weeks especially since seeing the O'Keefe Foundation video.
Hello, this is my first time seeing one of your reactions and I would firstly like to commend you on your production, simple visual, uncomplicated lyric content, and most importantly, top quality sound! And I see to my right that you have a few more reactions, so I look forward to watching your appreciation unfold :)
"Days away I still feel you changing me" - I believe this song named H. is about his first child Devo **H.** Keenan, and was written before he was born. Maynard wrote a similar song in Puscifer about his daughter, Augostina ;)
Here are some epic TOOL songs. Lateralus (Written in Fibonacci sequence), The Grudge, Parabol/Parabola, Jambi, Third Eye, Pnuema, 7emptest, Right in Two, Wings Part 1/Part 2, Swamp Song. Hell just listen to them all. You'll honestly love them all. Most people don't get TOOL. The ones that do join the army.
For those not familiar with listening to vinyl records, at the end of the album, the stylius is stuck in the last groove cut into the vinyl and "bumps" into the uncut vinyl, making the sound you hear ... you have to get up, go to the turntable and lift the stylius arm, flip the record and start the other side of the album. Think of not having a remote control for the television. The title of this song reminds me of when the side of an album was over, we would tell someone to"make yourself useful and flip the album" Hence, an useful idiot!
Two of their best and some of my favorites. I said it after your last vid and I'll say it again, I really think you would like the song You Lied. Looking forward to next video.
If you have the opportunity go see Tool live and you’ll be left utterly amazed and thankful that you did. Over time try to listen to each album and you can clearly hear how the band has evolved from album to album. Tool is a grower and show-er so you get the best of both worlds. The more you listen to them the more they’ll grow on you and their shows will seriously blow your mind. The production is insane and seems like every time I see them live it keeps getting bigger and bigger. Tool is in their own league and there is really no band like them. Do some research on them and youll respect them even more because there is some really cool history. As far as another song, I think Right In Two is a song you’d probably like. Honestly, Tool has so many awesome songs you just gotta start listening and you’ll be part of the fam and a Tool junkie for life!
There is never enough Tool!! I really enjoy your reactions weather you are right or wrong with your interpretations it's how these songs relate to you that counts, I'd like to see the Disposition, Reflection and Triad songs or maybe even 7empest if you crave something more.
As a 25+ year fan and also a frequent viewer of tool reaction videos, this is some absolute grade A sharp deconstruction. Fantastic work. Subscribed and looking forward to your journey.
You are right to keep your perspective open on song meanings because Maynard is a masterful lyricist, second to none. He is very much known for his dry sarcasm within songs, as well as many songs meaning more then one thing loaded with double and even triple entendres. He doesn't like to describe the meaning to most songs because he expects the listener to attempt to dissect it. Also, one more note, it is widely known that 46 and 2 is a reference to dna, we currently have 44 autosomes and 2 sex chromosone, or 44 and 2, where as aboriginal people had 42 and 2 as well as current day monkeys. So its believed that 46 and 2 is in reference to us as humans evolving into a being with 46 and 2 that sees the human race as one, instead of an individual as one. Lastly, Wings of Marie is a masterpiece where you can tell Maynard puts his heart and soul out there (get ready to shed a tear) but it is important that if you do Wings of Marie then the next song 10,000 days is a must because its a 2 part song so you really should listen to them back to back. Best I can describe it is, 'a letter you feel you should not be reading, however, the author wants you to and in the end you feel honored and humbled for the privilege for being allowed to'. If you want the back story, for this, it's about Maynards mom Judith Marie having whats believed to be an aneurysm and becoming paraplegic when Maynard was 11 years old and her being devout Christian that Maynard is trying to come to terms with, and he puts that out there on the song Jimmy (his name is James Maynard Keenan and jimmy is a reference to himself as a kid). So it wouldn't be a bad idea to listen to that one as well. He also does a song in reference to his mother called Judith with his side project band Perfect Circle, it's a good song but doesn't do a whole lot for the back story, as Jimmy really gives you a pretty clear picture if you know what you are listening to.
3 Libra's is one of the greats. That or lateralus please. Enjoy seeing her experience these for the first time helps me remember listening to them for the first time back in the day.
I feel that H is about the transition into Parenthood. The snake being the old habits and the friends that don't want you to change and want you to keep partying. The snake turning his piss to wine would be people encouraging your bad behaviors. The new life/child making him change, to drop his barriers and become connected, effectively killing who he was. Maynard acknowledges that it was fear that was holding him back and that he doesn't mind.
Agostina , Maynards daughter , has a song about her as well . From his other band Puscifer. It’s a fantastic song and a great ice breaker to Puscifer ,give it a look😃 Songs called Agostina

Wonderful watching your journey! If you do Right in Two, I suggest listening to Intension first, to me They go together.. So many songs left! Enjoy yourself.
First off WHAT’S UP TOOL ARMY!!!🤘 Anyway, The Pot would be a good next reaction. Lateralus is a must and parabol/parabola. If you’re gonna do wings for marie then you should dive into Maynards other band, A Perfect Circle, and check out Judith as well as Jimmy by Tool.
@@michaelpritt6358 he was trolling his sheep...he likes evading alot.....especially when Herion has nothing to do with these lyrics...how does lyrics like ...my blood before me begs me open up my heart again...so many lyrics speak to having an offspring while struggling to know how to handle that, but I do agree if you have no children and it feels like it's about addiction or the sensation of it then that's ok too
Well the fact that his son Devo H. Keenan was born in 1995 and Aenima was released in 1996 lines up pretty well with the interpretation that this is indeed about the birth of his son and him becoming a father.
@@hawks7775 absolutely im pretty sure thats what the name tool actually refers too im sure ive heard them say, but i still think hes lyrics refer to something specific in his life or a concept, knowing that still interests me. And ofc i cant KNOW for sure what hes actually talking about but im sure you know what im trying to say
Another great reaction. Tool are masters of progression as well as musical geniuses. More reactions please. Still waiting for Reflection. Maybe something older that shows the band's amazing evolution over time? Like, Undertow or Sober?
This is one of Tool's most amazing songs, and really sums up the entire theme of Aenima. This song is about growing, changing, and moving towards the next level of human evolution and conciousness. It's deeply rooted in Jungian theory. Basically, it's believed that there are three levels of human evolution and each has it's form of conciousness. There's the 1st level with 44 chromosones. These are primitve people's like the aboriginies in Australia who do not percieve anything outside of themselves. They only see one large conciousness with no distinguishment between organisms. Then there's the second level with 46 chromosones. That is us. We are a chaotic disharmonic conciousness that is basically used as a stepping stone between the first and third levels. The third level is 48 chromosones. (Or 46 & 2, with 2 being the sex chromosones x & y). This is the higher level of conciousness. Our destination. But this is where the Jungian theory comes in. It is believed that you can not reach this third level of evolution without first delving into yourself and basically cleansing your conciousness for the next jump. That's where the Shadow comes in. The shadow is basically everything about that is unseen that you are uncomfortable with or hate. This is also known as the Anima (hence the name of the CD). The last part of the song sums all of this up... "See my shadow changing, Stretching up and over me Soften this old armor Hoping I can clear the way By stepping through my shadow, Coming out the other side Step into the shadow Forty six and two are just ahead of me"
If you love Maynard's voice and lyrics you can hear more of him with his other two bands. A Perfect Circle is Maynard's Rock side. Puscifer is Maynard's alternative humorous side.
I know he's written some churlish songs for Puscifer, but there's also some serious songs that he's made with Puscifer. The Humbling River immediately comes to mind.
As I look in your eyes My fear begins to fade Recalling all of the times I have died And will die It's all right I don't mind This verse hits me every time I've heard and will hear it. Too fukn heavy
Yeah, you might be ready for Lateralus after experiencing 46 & 2. Also, Right in Two, The Pot, The Grudge, Jambi, and Schism. I think, once you get a nice feel for early Tool, you can move on to Fear Inoculum. You can really see their musical acumen and spiritual influence grow between albums, with Latertalus, for me being the peak of the band's greatness. You see them go more spiritual after with 10000 days and FI. Still, not a bad album or song in the entire catalog.
Dunno they just went hard as fuck back in the day. 10000 days took multiple listens for me to warm up where listening to the old stuff hit off the jump.
The 'useful idiot' interlude track is the soung of a vinyl record playing nothing the point being if you listen to Ænima on vinyl it becomes an invisible track.
In scientific literature, references to species are often by first letter of the genus name, followed by the species and, if applicable, subspecies names, such E. coli for Escherichia coli, or C. lupus rufus for Canis lupus rufus (the red wolf). In the case of humans, we are Homo sapiens sapiens, or H. sapiens sapiens. Thus, it is worth noting that the title of H. includes that period, and given the life cycle description, the Useful Idiot and Forty Six & 2 pieces that follow, as well being preceded by Eulogy, H. must be considered at least partial reference to Homo, the human genus. As for Forty Six & 2, we have twenty three chromosome pairs, but two genders that are often portrayed as at war with each other, or at least in conflict, but still sharing the twenty three pairs and being halves of one species. Much of this album is about the experience of humanity and the human condition.

Wonderful watching your journey! If you do Right in Two, I suggest listening to Intension first, to me They go together.. So many songs left! Enjoy yourself.
Watching this i see Maynard on the shrinks couch and this is her listening to him.
Love your intelligent and emotional reaction.😃
Unbelievable that you caught the beat at first hearing , most reactors try to go 4 * 4 and immediately get lost . born for prog
Gotta do Stinkfist and Eulogy as well. Also No Quarter is similar to pushit, I think you'd enjoy it
I second this!
and H is about maynards son and fatherhood. But there are no wrong interpretations
I have a live bootleg from Houston in 1998 where Maynard says outright that the song is about heroin.
@@schh486 I agree although I believe maynard and tool as a whole want listeners to use the songs in a way that can relate to them
@@hawks7775 absolutely im pretty sure thats what the name tool actually refers too im sure ive heard them say, but i still think hes lyrics refer to something specific in his life or a concept, knowing that still interests me. And ofc i cant KNOW for sure what hes actually talking about but im sure you know what im trying to say
Beautiful
That eargasm after 46 & 2 was insane
tool is my fav. i heard the band every time i was playin diablo2...old memorys
Thanks for the great videos! Just found you guys, will keep checking in!
Best reaction team right here
Another great reaction. Tool are masters of progression as well as musical geniuses. More reactions please. Still waiting for Reflection. Maybe something older that shows the band's amazing evolution over time? Like, Undertow or Sober?
I remember looking up the meaning of 46 + 2 when this came out... pretty interesting stuff...
It's all nonsense. A potato has 48 chromosomes.
@@RyanAcidhedzMurphy Really? A potato? hmmm... that's interesting.
"See my shadow changing,
Stretching up and over me
Soften this old armor
Hoping I can clear the way
By stepping through my shadow,
Coming out the other side
Step into the shadow
Forty six and two are just ahead of me"
Reflection is my favorite song ever, it’s a masterpiece imo. You’ll enjoy the ride.
Tool lyrics are deep....Tool is their own genre
You have to listen to The Grudge. One of their best openers; if not THE best.
Hell yes! That one is epic!
Yes. It is also my favorite opening track from there albums. So tough to pick one favorite tool song. Impossible to pick one
I would love to see Fear Inoculum and Pneuma :D
The interpretation given for H. made me throw my newborn cat out a 20 story window into a vat of every animals tears!
I love that your talking about Ontology
As I look in your eyes
My fear begins to fade
Recalling all of the times
I have died
And will die
It's all right
I don't mind
This verse hits me every time I've heard and will hear it. Too fukn heavy
I wish I could hear Tool for the first time again.
Love your channel
Welcome to the world of Tool!
You picked a great song to get hooked on Tool. Try Schism next!
I recommend listening to the entire album as a single piece of work...the segues are more immersive uninterrupted.
“Stepping through my shadow! Coming out the other-“ *ad*
Great stuff, thank you
Yep, she's a Maynard fan for sure. The music as well of course, but she's in love.
What you just experienced is known as a Toolgasm. Welcome. It just gets better from here.
H is a reference to his son being born and struggling to achieve a father child connection
I bet she just draws a super spiral over and over.....🤙🤘
Yup, got Her!
Fear is an incredible album, just more cerebral/ Pink Floyd-esqe than most people expected I think
H is Maynard's son's middle name. Just the letter. The blood before me opens up my eyes again..100% about his son and how it changed him
And I cannot wait to see your reaction to Tempest
she's hooked folks
96’... I was 19
Sad eyes
I was 4
I was 26 lol
Me too!!
Much of this album is about the experience of humanity and the human condition.
you don't need to ever be sorry for wanting more Tool. i get it.
