Thankyou so much for showing & telling us all about the equipment/products you use. So many videos show us how to do something but not what to do it with. ❤️ from England
With the final brushing, with the very light brush, are you applying it with a dry brush or damp like the others? Also, are you able to use a different alcohol if you can't find ever clear? For example, vodka? Or another thigh alcohol content liquid like that? Thank you :)
Hi Minette! I know it's been a while since this video was published, but if you're still reading comments, I have a question for you. Do you think I could use this technique with a stencil? As in, painting on the cake with the lustre dust/alcohol paint like one might do with royal icing over the stencil. I thought it might be a lovely multi tier cake idea to have some tiers completely covered in gold and some just with images stenciled in gold.
Zahraa Mostafa lemon extract is alcohol. Any extract has an alcohol content. I have never come across a way to work with fondant detailing that doesn’t include alcohol. I think it important to remember that the whole idea of using alcohol here is that it evaporates very quickly and so won’t turn your fondant to mush like water will. Any alcohol content left on the cake would be virtually nothing.
Hun can I put the meringue in the fridge with the mixing bowl to cool down before I add the butter to make Swiss meringue buttercream ? I don’t want to over mix the meringue and still the bowl is warm
minetterushingcakes Thank you so much your an amazing woman I’ve added the butter and it’s very running I don’t think I left the meringue in the fridge too long 😫😫😫
Hi I was just wondering if I can use lemon extract instead of vodka, AND, am I able to apply a sugar lace to a cake after this if it dries fairly quickly? Thanks a lot for the video.
+Diatriber Diatriber You are welcome! Yes, you can use lemon extract instead of the Everclear to paint. Lemon extract will dry very quickly, as well. Yes, you can apply sugar lace to the painted cake...just make sure it is good and dry.
minetterushingcakes I can’t believe you replied Thank you so much Do you mind if I can message you when I need some advice as I’m new to baking and I have a wedding cake to do in March next year 😆 I shall definitely try the lemon extract instead of the vanilla By the way I love your videos I came across yesterday and watched afew with delight 🌹♥️
Talithaz1 Barnes thanks for reply. Why you not use the lemon extract? Have always said me that, with luster color, is the best to really make the luster ... is that it?
Thank you so much for this tutorial,I wanted to surprise my son and daughter-in-law to be with a special wedding cake and this is just what I was looking for. What brand of luster dust is that? Iv never seen it sold in such large quantity?
Can I use a pearl luster dust on blue fondant? Or would it cover the color?? I want to make a royal blue pearl cake and I'm not sure if I should maybe mix blue and pearl luster dust?

Hi Minette, Thats really a very good tutorial. I have a question regarding use of Alcohol. Due to religious reason i can't use alcohol. is there any substitute to alcohol? thanks
Good morning! I have a question for you. Have you painted a cake using this method (grain alcohol) with modeling chocolate? If so, what is the reaction? I hate fondant and would like to pearlize a cake that is covered in modeling chocolate. Heeeelp!!
I'm from the UK and a cake decorator too. You can use vodka or gin to mix, you can also buy a dipping alcohol from your nearest cake shop, hope this helps?
tee givens, I buy large containers of pearl dust from CK Products, which is a wholesaler. Check with www.flourconfections.com, they should carry large containers of dust too.
thank you so much for this lesson! i was stumped to know how to show the metallic look. i wanted to ask.. I'm doing a frozen character ombre two tier cake and going to use the airbrush kit for the first time so my question is do i airbrush first then add the lustre dust or do i add the lustre look then airbrush over?
savannahcustomcakes thank you so much for your response, ok i guess i will have to learn it lool.. so how do you make an ombre effect on a cake without using an airbrush?
Tazain, look for the luster dust that is labeled "food safe or edible." Not all luster dusts are made the same. If in doubt, you can always advice the customer to remove the fondant before serving.
Thankyou so much for showing & telling us all about the equipment/products you use. So many videos show us how to do something but not what to do it with.

With the final brushing, with the very light brush, are you applying it with a dry brush or damp like the others? Also, are you able to use a different alcohol if you can't find ever clear? For example, vodka? Or another thigh alcohol content liquid like that? Thank you :)
such a beautiful look...my question is, can you eat it, or is it just for looks and you have to peel the fondant off before you eat the cake
Yes, if it's an edible luster dust, you can eat it.
HI, I'm from the Philippines, can I use a substitute for grain alcohol? I have never encounter grain alcohol here in our place.
+Peach Javier Hi Peach! You can use lemon extract or vodka to paint on cake with. Thank you for watching.

is there any other other solution with no alcohol cause i can't drink it or eat it ???
You can use lemon extract

You probably can...I don't have an airbrush.
hi. can this be fine on chocolate covered Oreo?
Thank you for this tutorial Miss Minette! What type of fondant do y'all use? -Cindy Mae
Hi Cindy Mae, currently I use Massa Americana.
Could you use dust/alcohol mixture in an airbrushing tool? Or would it clump up in it..
that will clog up an airbrush.theres white pearl airbrush u can buy if ur just looking for a faint shine and not a color painting.
Hi I was just wondering if I can use lemon extract instead of vodka, AND, am I able to apply a sugar lace to a cake after this if it dries fairly quickly? Thanks a lot for the video.

Many thanks! Lovely demo. I have a cake next month I need to use this technique on and I didn't know how to do it.
what brand of luster dust r u using? and, do u think a certain brand is better than another?
Catherine Miller i
Once the painted cake is dry, can you store it in the refrigerator overnight? Also, do you know about how long it would take to dry?
Do you advise clients to peel off lustered fondant and not to eat it? I see some lusters are food safe and others are not. What would you advise?
This lustre dust is edible and no need to remove.
Can I use the lemon juice or vanilla extract as a substitute of alcohol
Muffins Gow you can use lemon extract but not lemon juice. I think vanilla extract will make the finish look brown.
minetterushingcakes I can’t believe you replied Thank you so much
Do you mind if I can message you when I need some advice as I’m new to baking and I have a wedding cake to do in March next year 😆
I shall definitely try the lemon extract instead of the vanilla

Why you not use the lemon extract?
Have always said me that, with luster color, is the best to really make the luster ... is that it?

Thank you! Lemon extract will work too.
Is it powder dust you used for the final cover
Hi, Is there anyway you can do this with buttercream?
Hi! Greetings from Chile :) one question... Does this alcohol or lemon extract affect the flavor of the cake? Maybe too bitter? Thanks!!
+Fabi Rod Hi! I've never had anyone mention it.
Thanks a lot! I'm trying to look for some strong alcohol here. Have a nice day!
Love this thanks minette
does it have to be lemon extract? can it be any other flavor?
Yolanda Rolle yes it can be almond or vanilla or any flavor you like
buttercream icing then vanilla extract to mix with the luster, wud it be ok?
I've never tried this technique with buttercream. I wouldn't advise using vanilla extract to mix with the luster dust.
Good morning! I have a question for you. Have you painted a cake using this method (grain alcohol) with modeling chocolate? If so, what is the reaction? I hate fondant and would like to pearlize a cake that is covered in modeling chocolate. Heeeelp!!

Can u use water instead of that lemon stuff
Which brush are you using?
can you use this on buttercream icing cakes
What can alcohol be replaced with if someone does not prefer alcohol at all
The alcohol evaporates so you won't be consuming the alcohol. You can use an alcohol based extract if you don't want to be using vodka ect.
Hi Suki, if you prefer, you can use lemon extract instead of alcohol. Thanks for watching!
+savannahcustomcakes ... but lemon extract also contains alcohol!
can we use edible glue and a little water instead of the alcohol?
rose water is better than water
If you don't want to use alcohol, I recommend using lemon extract.
Can you do the same on buttercream?
Can you use vodka as we can't get that brand in the uk
I'm from the UK and a cake decorator too. You can use vodka or gin to mix, you can also buy a dipping alcohol from your nearest cake shop, hope this helps?
Is it powder dust that u used
where did you get your turn table
+Cathy Adams Cathy, my turntable is made by Ateco. I bought it at a restaurant supply store in town.
also if cake has filling can you put in frig afterwards
Yes! We refrigerate all our cakes.
Do you have to remove the fondant before eating
no
I prefer too

+Genine Garcia Hi there...I also have to do a 6 and 10" tiers in gold. Can you tell me how many 2-gram packs you used? Thank you!

Darcy Eddy, you sure can! Make sure the gold is edible and your buttercream is cold!
Where is your dust from???
Is lustre dust edible?
Yes can someone answer? Luster dust , is it edible?
ChezEjay yes, it sure is! you cannot taste it either, once it's on the cake/ edible item.
Tazain, look for the luster dust that is labeled "food safe or edible." Not all luster dusts are made the same. If in doubt, you can always advice the customer to remove the fondant before serving.
