hey mk its me cess again 😊 its my first time to try a luster dust on butter cream and ive been usjn veg. oil too great thing ive seen ur video it makes me feel more confident now☺
This looks amazing, thank you ever so much for uploading. Just a quick question, would this work with non-alcoholic vodka? Happy to try it if you haven't, but thought I'd ask first if you know if it would work.
Thank you for this test!! I have just one question, did you taste all 4 of them? When i want to paint a whole cake with (for example) vegetable oil, will this make my buttercream taste different?..
You're welcome Daphne! Hmmm good question - in all honesty I've never painted an entire cake using the vegetable oil. I know when painted on a drip it's okay because you're only using a small amount and the chocolate itself has oil in it, but I'm not so sure about when painting an entire buttercream cake. Sorry about that!!
Very informative video,as Muslim we don't use alcohol, but vegetable oil does not dry. Vanilla essence is too bitter, I will go for lemon juice. Thank you for sharing 😊❤️
Thanks Kathleen! :) The vanilla essence I used in this video was a flavoured vanilla essence so didn't contain alcohol, but yes the non-alcoholic versions can be harder to find, and like you said - more expensive than other options. I loved how the vegetable oil came out too! :)
Hi there! :) Hmm you can try this, but I don't think the colour of the lustre dust will come through very well with whipped cream. Would love to hear how you go if you try it out :)
i guess in the end it would be a matter of how they'd taste? water wld be neutral. lemon would be sourish while oil would taste richer? but thanks for the experiment & review :)
Hi there! :) Yes absolutely - though the amount of lemon juice/oil is quite minimal so it doesn't affect the taste too much. And you're welcome, hope it was helpful!
Hi MK can you please tell me I want to paint some sea shells in gold lustre dust do I need to seal it with anything cause I noticed when I handle them the gold is coming of on my fingers. This is my first time using this is it normal for the gold to come of on your fingers? Thank you in advance
Hi Deb! So when painting objects or chocolates, it's best to use a non-oil based mixture (in case you are using the oil) as the oil won't dry completely. When using say water or lemon juice, then what you need to do is paint one side, let it dry then paint the other side. Sometimes you may also need a double coat. Once dried it shouldn't really stick to your fingers (there may be some residue but it shouldn't come off what you've painted on if that makes sense). Hope that helps and good luck :)
Heyy!! Thankyou soo much for such an informative video.. one question.. can i apple luster dust mixed with oil on royal icing? Will it dry easily? If not what to use on royal icing for gold color
Hi there! So although oil works really well, it won't dry compared to say using water or lemon juice :) I haven't painted on royal icing myself but maybe try the water or lemon juice as a trial and see how you go :)
Thanks so much! :) And it takes about half an hour or so depending on the climate :). The oil one doesn't really dry because of the oil base. Hope that helps!
Hi MK!😃 Thanks for explaining and giving these alternatives🥰 Just a quick question, if you are doing a design where you have to paint a major part of the cake with the gold paint and you end up using veg oil, will it not affect the smell and taste as veg oil has its own taste and odour. Really really appreciate if you can give some advice on that! Thanks!🥰
Love the video! I recently came across this product called "Rolkem Quick Dry Essence" and just got it in the mail today. It's non-alcoholic and I'm eager to see if it works well with painting with luster dust! Although, I'm glad there are other options I can try as well! Would the vegetable oil leave a greasy mouthfeel on the cake?
Thanks Ayesha! :) Ohh interesting thanks for sharing - would love to hear how it goes! And hmmm good question. I am not too sure to be honest, but when making the gold paint you only need a really small amount of oil - so I think it should be okay if you're only painting small areas of a cake :)
Very well explained .I have gold dust which is not exactly in power form I mean like dust ,it bit flaky type so can I use it to paint drip on cake n chocolate sail?plz do reply
Thanks Vandana! Hmmm I am not so sure as it may not dissolve into the liquid properly. You could always try a little bit and if it does dissolve well then it should be fine to paint with :)
Hello!! Thank you so much, really appreciate it. I really love your videos, I get to learn so many things here. One question though can we use lemon juice, water or oil to make the luster dust color for a manual airbrush??
Coconut oil is solid at room temperature, which complicates things. If you live in a very hot place where coconut oil is liquid at room temp, then it would probably work. Any oil labeled canola, corn, peanut, soybean, or vegetable is liquid at all temperatures (hot & cold), which eliminates the temperature variable. And unless someone has an allergy, those oils are all neutral in flavor and are almost always interchangeable in recipes. Tl;dr: you can experiment with coconut oil and it should work. But any other neutral oil is basically guaranteed to work, no experimenting necessary.
Hi Seireen! As the other user has kindly mentioned, if the coconut oil is liquid at room temperature then it should be okay. Just be mindful of the taste :)
Glad you found it helpful! :D And it's best not to use oil when painting chocolate as it won't dry, but I do have a neat trick to colour strawberries with lustre dust in the following video if you want to check it out :) ruclips.net/video/PdooJnzu0Fg/видео.html
I really like this, but I do worry about the taste. What do you think the main difference would be if you did something like maybe coconut oil instead of the vegetable oil??
Hi there! Yes it can, but I imagine it would only work on a stable whipped cream frosting that sets slightly firmly, otherwise when trying to paint on the whipped cream the paint won't stick. Hope that helps :)
Thank you! :) And hmmm you may need to use a dropper or very gently add a drop or so of the rose spirit at a time and keep mixing it in until the clumps disappear :)
Hi there! :) Hmm good question - I've never really done lettering before so I'm not so sure sorry! I imagine the consistency of the paint would be a big factor for this. Maybe other users who have tried this can help :)
Thanks Janani! :). Yes it can be used to paint the tops. I wouldn't paint the entire sugar sheet though as you want to try and keep moisture away from the sugar sheet. Hope that helps! :)
So glad to hear you found this helpful! :) Yes you can if the whipped cream is stable and sets relatively firmly. And hmm good question! I guess it could be haha I usually just use the gel colours like that or with a little water but never though to try anything else :)
