Easily my favorite shoe to run in this year and I have a bunch of them (luckily I work at a place that allows me to get these). I always respect when people don’t go with the wave and give out their own feel for the shoe and it works for them. That’s why we’re here in the first place, to have some dialogue. Appreciate the honest review! I’m a big fan of the Superblast 2 after about 100 km, but your points are valid - it doesn’t really do it as a daily trainer, at least for me. But it’s ideal for marathons and tempo runs.

Thank you for producing the best running content currently online. I absolutely love the honesty. My take on the SB2; definite break-in period required. Miles 0-75 were filled with buyer’s remorse. Miles 76 - present (150-ish) are much more pleasant, but just…. Ok. The bulk and stack disappears around 7:20-7:30 mins/mile for me, but still feels clunky moving any slower or faster. The rocker definitely needs to be moved farther back. Just too much foam for the toes to work through. I wore it for 20 miles last weekend and just could not stop taking my mind of the shoes.

Regarding the skipping to the breakdown: Not all people want to see a 70minute movie about this shoe, they probably watch different people review the same shoes to get different opinions. I use it as a more durable workout & longrun shoe (if I have pace in my longrun) and this shoe instead of 100-300 will do 500-600 miles and the this price point is actually completely justified! :))

Have really enjoyed my pair. There is a break-in period though which I didn’t mind. They have started to soften up considerably about 60 miles in. Whether or not you think a $200 shoe should have a 50-100 mile break-in period is a personal question.
It’s also the first “super trainer” I’ve ran in so grain of salt. The guy banging out 100+ mile weeks and trying every shoe on the market probably has a good feel so I still enjoyed the review.

It's important that we get impartial and honest reviews. Oftentimes, I feel that reviewers are not harsh enough and tend to shy away from saying too many criticisms that might cause them to get fewer shoes to review or make sponsors or shoe companies irritated. Sometimes, they might become ambassadors then most impartiality is gone. Thanks for painting an honest picture and how you experienced it.
I don't think this line will get discounted with how popular it is. My fav is still the novablast 3 for long runs and it has some resilience and bounce for my strike and weight.

The ride on the NB4, ES3, SCT2, AP3 and even the hoka clifton (shoes I currently run in) are much better. I think asics could make this shoe much better if they put more of the FF blast foam in the shoe.

  • @tomrichardson5433
    @tomrichardson5433 4 месяца назад

I agree with your description of how the shoe feels. It did feel clunky when new, no roll, and doesn't feel very soft. For me however, it has been a versatile shoe however. I have 600 miles on my SB1. I used it as a long run and marathon race shoe for the first 100 miles, then it was my long run and every day shoe to about 500 miles, and has been my recovery/easy shoe for the last 100 miles. It still feels like I could do a 20 mile long run in it comfortably. So durable as well as versatile IMO.
For me, the clunky feel went away after 70-ish miles, and it started to feel smoother than when new. And while I wouldn't say it's soft, I still feel bounce in the forefoot, and that makes it protective for long runs.
To me it's a very useful shoe, but like most shoes, it's not for everyone.

  • @hernangeles

You might be too fast? LOL. I have the SB1’s. I think “cloggy” = extra stability for me. My ankle, knees etc are staying where they should. I’m 215 pds and I’m using that cushion. You are right though, it comes alive on the slight downhill AND it ran big. I have about 350 miles on my SB1’s.

I love my superblast but im heavier so i can compress the foam and get the performance out of it. The higher stack softer shoes give me 5th metatarsal pain. The stiff superblast foam protects my legs without bottoming out. They did take about 50 miles to break in though. im excited to try version 2 when my ogs die.

At 213 pounds, I am with you on this shoe feeling great. Getting solid compliance without it feeling too firm at all. Just springy, fast, and with enough compliance to be comfy. Perfect companion to the Skyward X, which I am in love with. 2 pairs of each will make for a great year of running!

    • @smcapp
      @smcapp 4 месяца назад +2

I’m 235. It took about 30 miles to soften up with my extra weight and at 50 miles they felt really good. At first they did push me to run faster and were a little slappy at slow speeds but now I can even do easy paces in them. My easy day shoe is the kayano 30 and the stiffer super blast are much more comfortable to me. I prefer the Mach x over both though, so that might be a good option too.

The SB2 did not work for me either. Perhaps I got a faulty pair - the foam underneath my big toe on the left shoe feels like it collapses at a much faster rate than the rest of the foam. Noticed it the first time I put them on and walked around. On my first run in them, I got a weird pain in my hip after 5 miles. Switched shoes mid run and the pain immediately went away. Not willing to spend another $200 to see if another pair would be different.

This confirmed some of my suspicions about Asics road shoes. I tried the Trabucos early this year for trails and holy moly were they firm. They seemed like theyd get the job done but they were zero fun. I hear great things about their road shoes but it sounds like that Asics foam is just as firm as ever.
I kinda think the Novablast might serve a good purpose in my rotation but I definitely wouldnt pay a premium.

I'm currently in the Topo Cyclone 2, and I'm loving them! There's something to be said about a flexible, streamlined feeling shoe. I love the Saucony Triumph 20s, and they have a high stack, but don't feel clunky at all.

Always interesting how shoes and people can get along so differently. I just got my pair of SB2's and I use them for my road race day shoe. Last year I used the SB1's as my road race day shoe. I like the update to the upper, the grip is far better and the foam does seem to have a little bit more feedback, but I had no issues in the first one. My 1's are now my long run shoe for training and it does all paces well. I don't see myself as a heavier runner (6 foot, 180), but I do have harsh mechanics. I also don't get along with plates, they cause pain in my feet (multiple plated shoes), so this shoe is awesome for me.

Really suprised of your take on these ones. The biggest factor going for the Superblasts are the durability, but also how they continue performing with time. My OG superblasts are at 1200k, Ive had other many other shoes not even last half than that. At that point, its far from being a luxury product, actually being a great deal given how they also protect the legs, the stability, lightness and energy return that doesnt seem to fade away. For high mileage runners, the superblast remains the king

I agree that it´s an elevated DT. I like it, it is very satsifying, like many a slightly firmer shoe. (Puma DN2 is another great example.) SB speed assistance does not feel super trainer level. I compared it to a beat up pair of Endo speed 3´s and that ES3 gave more kick on toe off. But there is something realiable and confidence inspiring about the SB. Maybe it is that u subconsciously compare it to a DT. Anyway, I love it like everybodu but u. My point is, I like that differing opinion. U are consistent!

First run in it was 20mi with mile tempo reps. I didn't love it so much during the initial warmup/easy miles because the stack height made me a little nervous.
Once I hit the tempo reps, and quit worrying about it the shoe started screaming.

I finally figured out how to use the Superblast 1 correctly. It makes an excellent luxury nursing shoe. :)
Of course, today we're starting to see videos trickle out about the Adidas Evo SL, which looks awesome, as does the Glycerin Max. Probably sometime between January and March, my Neo Vistas will be nearing the end of their useful life and I'll be looking for another luxury shoe. However, the Adizero SL2 is still the best ordinary shoe I have and I say ordinary in the best way possible.

Superblast is not one of my favorite shoes ever and I don’t rave about it; however I do use it. I owned the OG (which I liked after 50 miles) and bought the 2 once I hit 350 miles on the OG.
For me, the slow paces feel fine (not amazing) so I haven’t had a bad run in it. Then there are the positives: 1. unmatched protection to weight ratio (my proposed “transcendent quality”), 2. allows me to pick up pace when I want to, and 3. no whammies in upper or grip. I use it for long runs and travel when I can’t bring all my shoes.
One other thing that I think explains the wide appeal / not a banger for Yowana. I think a lot of people just want a shoe that encourages them to run faster or helps them finish runs without sore feet. Just make it seem easier. Yowana wants unique tools for a variety of goals and brings plenty of speed from his own fitness. Fried foods and sweets appeal to more people but a foodie may appreciate more complex and unique flavors. Yowana is a “shoedie.” I might be also but I sometimes chow down with the Superblast too :)

First review I've seen on the SB2 thats negative on it, which isn't a problem I love all your reviews regardless! I'm curious though as to what it is in your running mechanics that doesn't mesh with a shoe that so many other people love. For me personally they've been a game changer for my long runs, although they did take some time to break in (lol) which I do agree isn't ideal but they are in a super sweet spot for me now.

Coming through with the high level perspective and opinion. I think it's beloved because it gives the feel of a carbon shoe but isn't one. People want to feel good about the performance boost without a plate. I agree with you that it's only got 1 gear and I believe is overhyped.

The value for me of the SB2 is the durability. My NB v4 is 200KM in and 50% of the outsole is gone, smooth. It was a nice ride but I'll probably retire it at 400Km or maybe less. My Clifton 8 which I use for slow ploddy runs is 300KM in and outsole is gone and would be retired to walking duty. Now the SB2 is around 150KM but the outsole has very2 minimal wear and only if you look closely. So if the SB2 last say 600KM where people are saying even more, then thats the value for me of not buying a new shoe every 300/400KM. I am a heavy runner so might be why I'm destroying outsoles at a faster rate but it might also be why I really like the feel of the SB2 midsole. Now my Boston12, I should change my car tires to Continental :)

It does surprise me that the majority of people love it and whatever pace people are running in it IMO there would be a better shoe to do it in.

Agreed. I recently ordered Superblast 2 and have run in them less than 80 miles. Well, although there's no magic wand type of running shoes, I am a little disappointed because Superblast 2 needs more miles and time to break in than I had expected. Not bouncy at all. (Yeah...maybe I've been too spoiled by carbon plated shoes.) Hope I'll like it in any time soon. 😑

Excellent review; if I understood Sagasu correctly, he had a very similar take. The shoe is not actually a do-all, versatile shoe, it is super niche, a "super trainer" designed for your long runs specifically; to lock in a threshold pace and throw away the key. He also mentioned due to not being in a marathon block, he would have no need for the shoe until such occasion where long runs are indeed really long (and really dialled in). I could be way off but that seems to translate to your experience, and your experience has receipts (and many bloody miles!) - thanks for this one!

Bro, I am not nearly as fast as you (I am actually a below average runner: 5.30km/min is my half marathon pace) but I´ve got the same experience than you in my SB 2. The fit is not remarkable: way too short in my usual US 8 so I rather use size 8.5 but it is a little bit loose in the heel collar (so once I tied the laces way too tight and experienced pain the bridge of my right foot that keep bothers me everytime I use them now...like a ghost pain) . As for the foam, it seems to be kind of dead in slow paces but, once I start running for a long time I can lock and keep it up in faster paces. I hope they get better with time but everything seems to be the same after my first 120km in them. Now, I only use them for speed workouts and long runs (with faster faces). For recovery and slow runs (most of my millage) I use my beloved NB V4 (with almost 700km of usage). Keep up the good work. Regards.
