    All vehicle have blind spots, or more correctly named blind areas. These are areas around the vehicle that cannot be seen by the driver when sitting behind the steering wheel.
    The biggest blind areas on the vehicle are to the passenger's side and to the rear of the vehicle.
    Technology is beginning to help with this limitation of driving with blind spot detectors; however, it is still imperative to employ proper scanning patterns to both pass a road test and drive defensively.
    Shoulder checking 2 times before turning or moving the vehicle sideways will allow you to determine if there are other road users or fixed objects in those areas around your vehicle.
    Convex mirrors to will help with the blind areas around your vehicle. You can find those here: www.amazon.com/shop/smartdriv...
    And keep in mind, the bigger the vehicle, the bigger the blind areas. This applies for SUVs, pulling trailers and other recreational vehicles.
    Good luck on your road test!!

    Last week, I made a right turn, then my instructor told me to change lanes to the left. As I was checking my blind spot, my car went towards the right curb and almost hit another car.. Guess I should’ve moved my head about 90 degrees(let my peripheral vision take care of the rest) & do the check less than a sec.

    Hi Ricky How are u I'm absolutely fascinated about how u Explain All ur videos. I'm going for My advanced Class Five In a couple Weeks And I have A Question.... Wat if the examiner asks Me To parallel park On the street And There Is No Vehicle parked On That Street.... Do I still have to park the same way As I would Park If There was A Vehicle In front of Me or behind Me!!!!

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  6 лет назад

      Hi Jared Adriel - Thank you for your query. If there isn't another car, it's not likely you're going to have to parallel park. They may get you to parked in a closed circuit area with cones. See this video: ruclips.net/video/s-mY5BIQDHI/видео.html&index=4&list=PL0x-bChcUvwFT3AUV-F13kqDUAhieIH2v Also, I would recommend that you take a practice road test with a local driving school before your road test to know if you're prepared for your road test. hi there, are you able to do a video on how to yield right of way to oncoming traffic (ie. residential narrow streets with parked cars on either side) and where to slow down or stop

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  7 лет назад

      Hi Dawn: thank you for your comment. I believe you are looking for this video: ruclips.net/video/dO6rI2no350/видео.html and this video for yield: ruclips.net/video/IX1lym7KbhI/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/qOq_CqYOm5E/видео.html And if you're in the least bit doubt about a traffic situation, or which road user has the right-of-way when driving, simply stop and wait for the other road user to proceed. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

    • @dawnlanthier7206
      @dawnlanthier7206 7 лет назад

      Hi Rick - thanks for writing back but I'm a goof and realized i used the wrong terminology... I live by residential streets where cars park on both sides of the road so driving w an oncoming vehicle can be nerve-wracking when determining who has right of way to pass or where to manoever my car (am i looking for a gap between parked cars to move into?) to give way... is there a right way to do this?

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  7 лет назад

      Hi Dawn - no, there's not really a right way to do that manoeuvre. But as I'm fond of saying, "you can be right, or you can be "dead right." In other words, if you can find a space to pull into and let the other vehicle pass, that's great. Most of the time, other drivers will help you out if you know they too are looking for a spot. I'd try not to get too stressed about it and just see if you can find an spot, and I'm sure the other driver is too looking for a spot. If you're both working, it will work itself out. And if it doesn't, you might meet someone you can go for coffee with. 😀 All the best, Cheers Rick

    In one of your videos you said, that one should see a part of the vehicle while adjusting side mirrors, there are lots of videos where others say that you should not see part of your vehicle while in driving position rather they show some adjustments to the mirrors, your videos are very helpful but i am a bit confused , whom to follow now?

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Saeed Rahman - Thank you for your comment and query. For new drivers I do not recommend the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) method for new drivers. New drivers must learn about the blind spots around their vehicle and know how to shoulder check and do 360° scans for the purposes of passing a road test. As well, I believe that the SAE method only works for highways and freeways and not in the city. If you haven't seen this video have a look on how to set up the vehicle: ruclips.net/video/dJpMKkwEhxI/видео.html If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. Hey, I've also got another question. I was merging onto the highway today while driving with my Grandfather, and when checking my blindspot, I pretty much completely turned my head, enough to see out the back window a little bit, but mostly just looking out the driver-side back seat window.
    He told me that I should just check my mirror, then look out the window directly next to me - not the one behind me.
    Is he right, or should I continue doing what I'm doing? I was always taught just to "check my blindspot", which I was told was just out the window in the seat behind me. Just looking for clarification :)
    Thanks so much for the help!

      Hi ORI RA - thank you for your comment and query. Your local rental shop should have those. If you wanted to send me the city you're in, I could have a quick look for you. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

    Rick would you recommend Wide Rear View Mirror?

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  5 лет назад +1

      Hi cherry tree - Thank you for your comment and query. I don't think that would give as much benefit as the small convex mirrors on your wing mirrors. Those give you another way to check the blind areas around your vehicle because you're never going to completely eliminate blind areas. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

    how can i make out blind spots on semi trailers

  • @SternDrive
    @SternDrive 6 лет назад +3

    As a 43 year veteran pro driver I would like to blow the "blind spot" myth out of the water. When I am driving my late model fully equipped Pete I never shoulder check when changing lanes and I have never crushed a little car into the curb. I have NO BLIND spots to the right or the left. Blind spots in modern trucks were common in 1955, but we have come along way since then, and I can see everything on both sides of my rig. I would love to prove it to you. Try to hide your smallest car on the right side or the left side of my rig, and I will sit in the drivers seat and take a picture of it in my mirrors. My camera with one "eye" can see the so called hidden car, and I will assure you that I have two eyes, and I can see that car, as well as a kid on a bicycle. I am a driver trainer and if you have blind spots, I will be glad to show you how to eliminate them. Call me, I'd love to help.

      Hi Doug - thanks for your comment. What about behind the trailer within one vehicle length? All the best, Cheers Rick

    • @SternDrive
      @SternDrive 6 лет назад +3

      Yes, a car can hide behind your trailer, but when you are going forward it is not your concern. It is their problem real quick if they are tailgating and you hit the brakes for a deer. They may not be wise following a truck so close, but they don't deserve to have their heads chopped off from climbing under my rig. I try not to stop fast for their sake, but for the most part I ignore them. Now when it comes time to back up, it is my problem, and what I always do while pulling into the yard or docking area, is swing right in a big arc and look in my right mirrors. Then I'll swing left and look in my left mirrors. I then know that no car is behind me. Our company has a policy as an extra precaution to always honk the horn before backing. In all my years of driving I have never backed into a car, so it is for the most part not a big issue. The big concern is all the guys driving on our streets and highways with huge blind spots because of a lack of correct training on proper mirror adjustment. I do not have any blind spots so I can maneuver right or left without ever worrying about squashing a car into the curb. When I talk to safety "experts" at insurance companies about correct mirror adjustment their eyes glaze over. They have no idea what I'm talking about and they continue to perpetuate the nonsense of the "no zone". When I train a student he will never ever need to worry about crushing a car on the right or left side. I have laid out correct mirror adjustment elsewhere on RUclips. Thanks Rick, for asking. I am always glad to help when it comes to safety on our streets and highways.

      By the way, why would a 45 year old "pro veteran" driver watch a video about learning about blind spots?
      But yeah, just share that tip on how to eliminate blind spots and I'm sure you'll save lives!

      Hi Purple Cod - Thank you for your comment and query. You can rent them from a local rental shop: 4 delineators for about 10 or $15 for the day. If that doesn't work, do down to Walmart and buy 4 or 5 short pylons and put sticks in them. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

    Hey Rick 😅 so I took a professional driving lesson today & my instructor got on my butt for shoulder checking to the left & right before making a LEFT turn. She sternly (more like scolding) said: "You dont look to the right when turning left. YOU ONLY LOOK TO THE LEFT!" So my question is: Arent you supposed to check both ways no matter which way youre turning? Thanks in advance

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  7 лет назад +2

      Hi SodASierraMist - thank you for your comment query. Yes, you only have to shoulder check in the direction you turning, merging or moving the vehicle laterally. See the shoulder checking video: ruclips.net/video/uJ4w63wZyFQ/видео.html You do however have to scan the intersection in both directions--left and right--before proceeding. Let me know how it goes. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
