How to back up straight along a curb is a requirement for the driver's test in California and elsewhere.
The reason that backing up along a curb is challenging, is because the passenger side of the vehicle is what's often referred to as "the blind side" of the vehicle.
The second biggest blind area is on the passenger side of the vehicle.
Most new drivers find this exercise difficult because they don't take the time to work with pylons and get a sense of where the right side of the vehicle is in space and place. In other words, where the passenger side of the vehicle is in relation to the curb.
In 3 easy steps, we'll show you how to go in a straight line in reverse.
For the first exercise, work with both tall and short pylons in the parking lot.
In the second exercise, work on a road where there's a shoulder and not a curb.
And finally, move to the curb and back up successfully along the curb to pass your driver's test in the state of California.

all good information, but the real secret to backing up along a curb...adjust your side mirror to see along the side of your vehicle and also adjust it as far down to the ground as possible. You will be able to literally see the curb - no guessing, no reference points.

when I first took my drivers test I had to redo the reversing in a straight line like four times because no one told me I was supposed to know how to do that😭😭 so I did it with absolutely no clue what I was doing
100% the same thing, never did it and that was my FIRST time.. during the test 😫 failed it but my test is legit tomorrow morning so we will see how I do !! Nervous a lil aha

update: i failed my first time because of an unprotected left turn and i didn’t know what to do but i passed my second time !!
excellent tip here from what I am seeing some states are actually doing this to replace parallel parking.

Hi Rick, the four-way flasher here is the emergency lights? In another video about backing along a curb, the left signal indicating arrow of your car can not be seen, just look like the right turn signal light.
are you able to look at side mirror when backing up along curb?
can you adjust your mirror when asked to do reverse park near the curb during the test or will you get marked down or automatically fail?
I have my test this Friday. Do I need to have the hazard lights on during the test or just the right side blinker ?

It’s connected to your scanning pattern. You should be looking at your instrument panel every 8-15 seconds & should be adjusting your speed accordingly. Cheers
very informative video. coming here because i just failed my test in Maine (we have to do parallel parking plus straight line backing) due to this maneuver. can't take driver's ed and my ability to get practice in is limited at the moment. hoping i pass next time.

Easier said than done! Not sure if it's allowed, but rolling my front windows down helps... along with much practice! 😉💯

Dumb question but when reversing do you always have to put one hand behind the passenger seat and the other on the wheel? I see some people who have both hands on the wheel while reversing but still looking everywhere
For me, personally, putting one hand on the seat makes it easier to turn my head around to see through the back window. I don’t know if it’s required during the test but I still did it to be safe lol

i saw in the dmv driving test book that i have to be within 3 feet from the curb but other people and sites have said to be 6-18inch from it during the backing portion. do you happen to know which is correct for the test?

My examiner covered mines in the state of Florida.
Rick will probably answer this himself soon but as someone who has watched most of his videos, I would say no. I believe only New Jersey allows you to use it.

@@smartdrivetest so I’ve been working a little on the reverse by the curb it’s going okay I just have issues with the correction of the wheel not bad which I barely have practice parking but it’s getting better
What am I suppose to be looking at to focus on while looking out the back window if I can't really use side or rearview mirrors to often? I can't see the curb on the street. But I do, do better on hills because I can see the whole road. And are we allowed to lift up a bit from the driver's seat while reversing or do I have to stay completely sitting down? Hope these questions make sense.

Side view mirrors are the only things you need. Crinking your head backwards is unreliable at best
If you were building a house, would you just use a hammer and some nails? No, you'd use a level and a square too. Use all your tools to keep both yourself and other safe when you're reversing. All the best, Cheers Rick
