• Locate the parking space - is the space legal and is it approximately 1 ½ times the size of your car
• Mirror, signal, shoulder check and ensure that it is safe to stop and that there aren't any vehicles tailgating you
• Pull up beside the car (3 feet from the car-in front of the parking space you wish to back into--and stop
• Line up the rear bumpers-you will be able to see the rear corner of the vehicle through your rear right window
• Put the car into reverse so the reverse lights activate telling traffic that you are going to park
• Put on your right signal to communicate to other traffic that you are going to park
• Locate your 45° degree reference point, which should be straight out form the door post-the reference marker can be any fixed object
• Release the brake pedal and back slowly, steering rapidly all the way to the right without any throttle and backing until your are facing your reference point
• At this point the rear bumper of the stationary car should be in line with your steering wheel
• Straighten the wheels and back until the bumper of the parked car is ½ to 1/3 the way down your hood or the front of your car clears the parked car
• Steer rapidly all the way to the left and back until the car is straight in the space
• Stop
Put the transmission in “Drive” or a forward gear and pull forward
• You should be able to see the top of the rear bumper of the car in front of you
• When park your vehicle should be 6-9” inches from the curb
• Secure your vehicle by applying the parking brake and putting the transmission into park (or a forward gear if you’re driving a manual transmission)
When pulling up to parallel park off the other vehicle, take note of how far the other vehicle is from the curb. If the vehicle is far from the curb, you will have to drive farther into the space. If the vehicle is close to the space, you will have to drive less deep into the space. If it is a wide vehicle, that too will dictate that you drive farther into the space.

@@johnmiranda5115 you're supposed put you're hand behind the passenger seat and look back. In real life I doubt you'd do that but that's the rule.

@@smartdrivetest im a little confused on the 45 degree mark, what I'm used to is using cones and using the cone behind me as a reference point and I found out that I won't have that cone to help, so do I just imagine there is a cone there or how do I approach this? Thanks.

My road test is next week and I'm so nervous about parallel parking
I'm an instructor, too, and determining the 45 degree angle is what my students have the most trouble with. Using a reference point in the car and outside the car to determine the proper angle is genius! Thanks!
I'm one of the 70% that has never parallel parked after my drive test! I had a fear of driving as a teen and didn't get my license until I was 22. My license expired years ago and I haven't had a vehicle for many years. Now, I'm 48 and have to take the drive test again. I have my permit and have been putting off my drive test because of parallel parking! This video really boosted my confidence! Thank You! I'll be scheduling my drive test soon...

My test is Friday, I haven’t parallel parked since I did my 6 hrs for my permit. I’m folding my driving instructor on sight if he doesn’t pass me.

You are doing a great job.
I have a question, when I put the car in reverse and turn the steering wheel to the right while I am backing up, The car is usually too wide from the curb.
Why is that?
@@godiseverything1482 heya! just an opinion here but it seems you arn't turning the wheel as hard or for too short of time when you begin parrallel parking.. aim for around 45 degrees from the other car your parking around then slowly bring your wheel around the other way and when your clear from the back of the car, hard lock around untill you have a straight line from the middle of your car to the middle of the back of the car infront of you... Hope this helps!

Dude, that 45 degree angle trick literally took most of the stress I’ve been getting whenever I practice and tossed it in the trash. Seriously, I was having a really hard time before I watched this. So I would just like to say, thank you for the wonderful advice and directions!

I don't understand. I parallel roughly 10 times a week. How are you able to avoid it for 20 years? Is it on purpose? Do you go out of your way to avoid it by parking elsewhere? Isn't it a hassle?
This was my situation as well. I got my license in '93 and I still break into sweats everytime I have to parallel park. I used this video to help my 17 yr old son and I think I may now have beat my fear of parallel parking myself. Thanks!
The amount of people who said they fortunately passed here, honestly gives me hope lol. I'm really needing to get my parent/s to take me out for a practice drive because it would help me tremendously more, if I actually was able to be more confident when driving, verses the saying of Point A to Point B. I was relaxed the first day of my road test, but ultimately I felt everything blanked my mind, and I wasn't sure how to handle the situation because of nerves, being scared to hit the cones, ultimately had someone nice that day & she simply said I needed more progress, and wrote me up. 😅
When I write down notes, I completely know how to do so.
When I was with my driving instructors taking practice drives (only way I've driven a car; not with my parents nor friends which lessens the practices), I would always do them nearly perfectly. K-Turn, and Reverse, as well as parallel parking. Day of the test lol I went blank in the mind, in due to being minimally distanced to the cones, feeling the car was crooked- fixed the car, got scared of hitting the cones, and was told to park to be written up, was very quick. Going to watch this video a couple of times & get in some extra practice. May I pass it on my second time. 🙏🏼💯❤❤ lol I needed to be more confident in my ability to drive, look, signal, reverse it to the right, signal, reverse it to the left, straighten the car, drive forward, park it. Have it checked. Then check blind spots, signal, and begin the K-Turn when ready to. Later the reverse, and minimal driving to have aced it. 😂🤣 I got so pissed when I got out of that car & knew I could've made it.

Ellie Hoggard make sure you practice a lot in the car that you’re testing in. Whatever you do, DONT hit the curb! Use the side mirrors to check as you’re backing into the space. Also relax and go as slow as you need to. Let me know how your test goes!
I just got back from my dad teaching me how to parallel park. I’m just crying because it was to hard for me and my dad kept telling me I was doing it wrong and getting mad at me. Hopefully watching this video can help me because I don’t think I can pass my test.

Your instructions are GREAT! I had to teach my daughter parallel parking, and while I have no fear of parallel parking, like you I could NOT explain it. Found your video and tried it out, then had my daughter watch the video before taking her out to practice. We just came back from her FIRST foray into parallel parking...and she NAILED every attempt! The first time I took my road test, I failed it BUT I did great on parallel parking thanks to your advice. I just tested again and did the parallel parking with ease and PASSED. Thanks for not only this video but all of your informative videos.

I still parallel park after driving for 35 years. Never really had any issues doing it. Only time I’ll choose not to it, is in heavy traffic. People don’t seem to want to give you the time or space to get it done. I found your channel, looking for help on teaching my daughter. I have parallel parked everything from a motorcycle to a school bus. But can’t seem to teach my daughter to park a Subaru. Funny how we “people” can perform a complex task with ease but can’t teach it. Thank you. You videos have been a great help.

I parallel park regularly. It is needed in neighborhoods and on city streets all the time. It seems hard to believe that 70 percent of drivers get away with never doing it. I do appreciate this reminder of methods for knowing where to set the vehicle before backing up, how far to turn the wheel, angling to the 45 degree spot, and how far to back up before turning the other way. I usually do it by sight, making visual calculations as I go and relying on a basic understanding of how the car moves,, without such a specific set of instructions to follow. Following the steps laid out in this video should make it super easy. Thanks!

Smart Drive Test I took it at the DMV. it’s by appointment only right now but they’re prioritizing new licenses/ID’s.
For the test itself, I had to do the fast stop (20 mph with out skidding the wheels), parallel parking and then we just drove around a bit for observation. That was pretty much it. I was one point from failing but I know for a fact it’s because I was so nervous. Longest hour and fifteen minutes ever, but I passed and got the parallel parking down pat so I’m gonna hold on to that!
Edit: I also had to back up in a straight line
Thank you for the information. Yes, those pesky nerves can get you every time. Still, you practiced enough that when the nerves kicked in, your skills you practiced took over. The 45 degree mark tip is SO simple and yet so effective. I’ve had my drivers license for 12 years but I never felt comfortable attempting my advanced road test because I’ve never parallel parked since my initial road test! I’ve spent years lurching in and out of spots before giving up for an easier spot! After watching this I tried parallel parking between two vehicles and got it on the second try, and since then I’ve been able to do it in one try. Thanks so much! I wish somehow had explained this to me in drivers ed many years ago.

I had to parallel park between two cars in a very tight spot on my road test in Pittsfield, MA today. Am still very grateful for your videos, above all for the encouragement and moral support. I just kept in mind what you said in your other video: your one job is to take away the examiner's right to fail you- nothing more, nothing less. It was a tight squeeze with a lot of back and forth in the spot, but I managed to get lined up close to the curb and get back out without hitting anything. Passed!

Rick, I passed my road test today ( Long Island, New York) on my second try. I want to thank you for helping me learn how to pass my road test ( your 45 degree angle tip is amazing for parallel parking).
There was a lot of self study for me to prepare for the test as my parents did not always have the time to teach me. There was also a lot of pressure for me to learn to drive and pass the road test in a hurry as I am going to medical school in 3 months. Your videos helped this future doctor achieve his goals and learn how to drive safely. For that, I am deeply grateful.
To anyone reading, confidence is key for the road test. Be confident in yourself. When the instructor asks you to do something on the test, do not be a mute and do not speak in a silent voice. Reply in the confident voice that you were born with that you understand the instruction. It will keep you focused and remind you that you are in charge and can win this. Practice this in your head and room before the test. It will help you when you are alone in the car with the instructor. Best of luck, everyone.

My driving instructor actually made me street park most days that we were out on the road (I took the test near a major city where street parking is the norm). By the time I took the test, I'd done it at least 20-30 times. Once you understand the process and know the references, parallel parking a sedan or smart car is pretty easy. SUVs and pick-ups are more difficult just due to size, but it's the same idea.
I've actually done it twice after I got my license and did alright both times. I surprised even myself..haha!

I'm 58 and teaching my 20 year old how to parallel park for her drivers test when truth be told I'm not that great at it myself. I always joke that I was absent the day it was taught. In those days we had the high school teachers teach us and literally did miss that lesson. You're explanation was so good that I'm feeling confident about doing it myself. Normally it would take 3 or four attempts but now understand the 3' and 45 degree thing. Thanks so much and hoping tomorrow goes better while teaching my daughter. I'm currently taking driving lessons. The driving school arranged my road test on December 17th, which is next week. When making parallel park to the right, my driving instructor tells me to line up the car mirror to mirror, turn the wheel 1 full turn to the right, back up until the top left corner of the license plate is in line with the face, stop, then turn all the way to the left and reverse in. The method works but recently I realized there's a major flaw to this technique that they're teaching me. So this method teaches me to get the car directly behind the car in front of me, and the flaw is if the car in front is parked far from the curb, I'll also be far from the curb, sometimes even farther than the car in front. But when the car is close to the curb, it is perfect parking though.
I passed my first ever road test a couple hours ago because of this video! I watched it last night, and today. I also used the technique in your uphill parking video in my test today, too. Thank you so much for making these videos, you help so many people to get their licenses!

Excellent video instruction. I used this with someone who was very nervous about learning to parallel park. She learned and practiced the steps, and then passed the driving test perfectly, no issues.
I am a recent immigrant to Canada who is studying for the licence plate test. Thank you for your video teaching, which has given me a lot of motivation to drive and practise.

I wish you were my driving instructor in driver's ed, mine has this thick irish accent so he's hard to understand and he grabs the wheel alot so he scares me

Hey JokerTV - that's great that your Dad's helping out. Ask you Dad if he could make some time for you to practice what you're--hopefully--learning in driver's ed. I had to retake my driving test because I went too long without renewing my license ( 4 years ). Here I am 4 years after retaking my permit and road test and I have had my license since that test. This video out of the tons that our out there is what helped me pass the parallel park with ease. The guy testing me even commented how easy I made the parallel park look. All because of this video. I'm up for my renewal in June which I will absolutely be doing and I just wanted to thank the guy that made this video. Best parallel park video hands down!!
