- In this video I outline possible causes including diagnosis and repair of common issues effecting Chevy, GMC and Cadillac trucks and SUV’s such as Chevy Silverado, Tahoe, GMC Sierra, Yukon, Cadillac Escalade and others with a symptom of no 4X4 operation, the transfer case range switch buttons won’t illuminate and/or there is a service 4X4 message displayed on the drivers information display. This video also contains helpful information for those replacing the transfer case shift (encoder) motor. Watch this video for more information.

Believe it or not I actually had my truck serviced in your shop when I was stationed at Ft. Richardson... great guys
We need more mechanics like you. Back in the day when I worked on cars I didn’t want to be a millionaire at all and helped people out.
You’re a saint.
I wish i had you as my mechanic man. Also wish every mechanic had the same integrity and morals as you.
Thank you!
Add that to your top 10 list of reasons to move to Anchorage, Alaska.
@@ThecardoctorTV how do you get rid of a falty service brake booster light on a 04 tahoe 5.3?
@@ThecardoctorTV if my truck was in 2H which way do you move the selector manually on the transfer case to get to the neutral position? I do not own the digital code reader like you do. Appreciate all the help.
@@82thetots i believe it would be counter clockwise in that case but also you can tell by looking at the splines on the replacement motor and just mirroring it on the transfer case side. I look at the mounting bolt locations to determine the spline clock positioning. Hope this helps. Good luck and thanks for watching my vids.
as an "old soul" and american, also veteran, i salute you, you represent the helpful spirit. that i believe ths U.S stands for. thank you! from a persian gulf veteran.
Thank you for your service!
You are one in a million helping customers get their vehicles repaired. Love the videos and learned much along the way. Thank you.
Thank you for your kindness Tim, you will be blessed along with your business.
We seem to be blessed way beyond what we deserve for sure! Blessings to you as well!
I ran out of gas on a steep downhill grade in my 99 Blazer. AAA guy brought me some and said when an older Blazer is below a quarter tank it can stop reaching the gas that flowed forward. It was a 16% grade. By the time I got down to the bottom (no place to stop) I had driven about 3 or 4 miles with no power steering or brakes. It was a relief to be sure. But I had driven up to the ski area in 4WD and by the time I got down the fuse was blown from me trying to start it a few times. So the first thing I checked, as you suggested was that fuse. I put in a new one and it works again...thank you for saving me hundreds at the dealer.
Excellent video! Honest, down to earth, knowledgeable, step by step! Need more mechanics like you Tim!
I seen that light come on this morning service four-wheel-drive. All I could think about was every dollar. I had gone out of the bank to fix it.
I can’t stand all this new shit they put on these trucks what happened to the days when you put it in two higher or four high and then when you’re done you take it out of four-wheel-drive everything‘s just fine no lights no nothing to aggravate the shit out of you
This man knows what he's doing and he knows what he's talking about I really enjoyed your presentation I don't see how anyone can go wrong having you work on their vehicle thank you
Thanks for helping out your friend, when his luck ran out. One day the sun will shine again and the clouds will only be a memory. God bless all the good people in Anchorage, Alaska.
Tom, that's really cool what you said. I agree completely. Blessings to you!
Only 152296 miles, it's not broken in yet. In my company I buy used Duramax GMC or Chevy. Usually they have around 120K miles. I tend to pay cash, usually less than 25% of the price of a new truck. My theory is that small businesses like mine have good months and bad months but payments go on and on and on regardless of the bank account. Most often a $700 repair bill (or even higher) is less than a single payment for a new truck. I pay someone else to do the truck work while I keep at my company's job. Some self anointed business-men say it's better to work from borrowed money rather than cash. I prefer to be debt free and drive a 15 year old truck. There are five other people in my company who do our field work and I keep my eye on the trucks they use. After all, the trucks belong to my company.
Excellent video.
Tim is an awesome mechanic. He knows exactly what to check- real quick. I did a rear main seal changeout and didn't ensure the wiring harness to the transfer case was properly secured. Just like Tim said in the video, if this harness falls down, it will rub against the driveshaft. In our case, it wore through the insulation. Initially it was an intermittent SERVICE 4WD light but then it was constant. After I shotgunned the selector switch and the front axle actuator, the lights on the selector switch went out. Tim was able to isolate the problem within a few minutes. Found the blown fuse that caused a no comm to transfer case control module code... Then he was able to pull the codes off the transfer case control module... Looking it up in an online database, there were a number of possibilities. The problem became immediately apparent upon inspection of the transfer case. Don't be like Charlie- Watch the video! I highly recommend Doner Automotive in Anchorage, Alaska if you are lucky enough to live here.
Matter of fact I do thanks for the recommendation
Good video ,what about when all the lights are on the switch I replaced the switch but didn't help ,all lights still on the 2,4 lo,high wheel switch I saw a lot videos but no one has that issue I guess ,any thoughts??
GREAT JOB TIM. LOVE YOUR HELPFUL, KNOWLEDGEABLE VIDEOS! BEEN WORKING ON CARS SINCE 1978 AS A MECHANIC, BUT I STILL NEED HELP OCCASSIONALLY.
Today you earned my subscription to your channel after your showing of compassion for the man that had very little money. God bless you and your family!
Thank you for sharing your operational expertise. You do a great job. That was really kind of you to offer your service for free. Hard to make a living when you're not charging, though. You are a decent human being!
Wow I know exactly how he feels. As a mechanic myself sometimes I find myself helping out people that you know are going through hard times. Weather it's towing a car or sometimes fixing it if it's possible. Their gratitude and appreciation is endless.

I know just what to look for now, thanks. I have a 2003 Tahoe and a 2003 suburban. This problem must be common among Chevy's of that era. Great job 👍 👍 love your channel!

Thanks for your time to help people with your expertise. @75 percent of the electrical problems can be bad grounds
Hey, I watch lots of videos...but when I see one from you about a certain problem yours is always the one I watch. Common sense, right to the point...you have helped me out many many times. Thank you so much for posting your videos...you are much appreciated!!!
Thank you so much. You made my day.
Thanks Tim, that was very helpful. Quite an act of kindness you did as well. More than once I've been in these predicaments. Its very rewarding to be able to help out.
Right on. It is always better than to receive. Blessings.
outstanding! Rare to see some good guys you can trust. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks brother. I must have watched 15 videos trying to locate the ID of the fuse to check. All of them said a 30amp fuse named teck, well my Tahoe does not have this fuse so I was frustrated because I couldn't reset my 4wd system without this. Until I came across this video giving me the correct ID and location of the fuse I needed to replace. And I'm finally back on the road again. Many thanks
Your a good guy Tim. It's nice to see people helping those durring rough times.
Thank you Phil
Thank you sir. Great to meet someone who is always out to help a person in need and short on funding Very nicely done video. Have a great day. Looking forward to your next video
Thank you, I certainly didn't do the job for free but its very satisfying to help people when we can. Blessings to you!
Thank you, Doc. You always provid great refreshing clean vids with very informative info.
Thanks Tim, my kids don't know how close they came to not having much of a Christmas, Christmas-lite so to speak, because those transfer case motors are not cheap, but I have to have 4WD this time of year, so thankful my problem was the ground wires, even though it didn't look very corroded, cleaned wires and frame rail, now have full functioning 4WD. I appreciate what you do, Thank you Tim, I'm subscribing !
Thank you for helping this man. You help restore my faith in humanity. God Bless you sir!

Dorman means do it twice, I understand Tim, you are a great tech with a big heart. We do what we have to for our very loyal customers, this guy will fall on better times and you will have helped
Agreed, its not like a gave away half my day on something, its just a small gesture to help our customers. I probably get more out of it th=an them anyway but you know how that is im sure. Blessings!
Many thanks your a good dude. Having a vehicle stolen he's on hard times. You are commended for your service for him.
At least you have a heart Tim. There are some of these millennials, er new technicians who want to get rich quick with the don't care how attitude. You obviously are not from that generation. By the way that Trailblazer AC pulley bypass belt trick worked spot on for my moms truck. Many thanks for showing us all that
Thanks man, glad to help!
Awesome thank you! My 4x4 was acting weird and not wanting to switch, you said the ground wire was the first thing to check, that did the trick.
Very good
Thanks Tim! Always good to see a GM truck video seeing that I own two of them.
We seem to have no shortage of them here. Take care
@@ThecardoctorTV man,. I just want to say thank you. You're a very good teacher. I remember when I was a kid you had to go to the library for the knowledge or at least have a set of encyclopedias. bro?! way ta' go man! makes me want to drive to Anchorage so you could work on my truck.
Watching you do the actual work was very helpful
Great video. Your easy to understand and good clear video on what to do!! Thank you
We need more mechanics like u for sure. The ones around here charge an arm and leg most of the time or half ass get the job done right. Hell i had one wanna charge me $20 just to drive a car i use to have just to listen to a noise it was making. 🤦🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️
Nice to watch a video and actually learn something. Great work Tim, it’s nice to see an honest man making his money the old fashioned way-good hard work!
Take care Tim and thanks so much for taking the time to produce the video’s, it’s much appreciated.
God Bless my friend.
Thanks for the video, you are a good honest person.
I hit subscribe just because of your customer service, buddy! I just bought a ‘97 GMC 1500 4x4 step side. I’ll need your help along the way. Keep up the great work my friend.
Good point about that ground. On my 2000 that ground bolt is threaded into sheet steel, easily stripped out. I put a nut on the back so it couldn't move, when diagnosing an ABS code. You also make a good point about the cost of parts. However we who drive old cars save thousands of dollars per year from less depreciation and less insurance compared to newer vehicles! So, we shouldn't complain too much about the cost of parts. New vehicles built today are much more likely to fall apart before their time.
agreed, so sad we live in such a disposable time. I love these old trucks. Worth fixing for sure.
Your a good man for helping folks in need. God Bless :)
Thanks man that ground wire helped get my 4x4 working again. Definitely much appreciated…👍👍
Thanks for helping out the poor man. Sounds like he has hit some hard times. Everyone should have compassion for his fellow man. Especially when you know what their circumstances are. It's not always about the almighty dollar. God will repay those who do right by their fellow men. God bless you and your family!
Thanks, your suggestion about the ground wire fixed my 2003 4WD Chevy Suburban. Also, the ABS system wasn't working and fixing the ground wire fixed that as well.
Great video man! Thanks for your help
I just fixed my service 4wd light tonight. The 30 amp TREC fuse under the hood was blown. I didn't find it untill after cleaning the ground wires and changing the push button panel. Great video. Thanks!!!
4 years later you helped someone get back on the road, thanks to both.
Another great video thanks for sharing. Tim, I hope all is well with you my friend. Stay warm.
Thank you Thomas! Its cold here but we are warm and well fed!
Body still looks clean / solid... so worth putting money into it.
A lot of people drive vehicles that are too big / not really needed... or simply don't have the funds to keep up with repairs. It's a wakeup call for some.
If you ever need a replacement body this is where to look, no rust around here. Sadly they steal these GM trucks of this vintage so you can find any body parts you need on ebay from the crack heads that part them out. I hope this one gets him a few more years of good service.
Great video from Alaska! Good repair. And coudos for helping out your fellow man! Everyone should take that as an example of the right thing to do. Take care. Jpol.
I appreciate the complement. I know there are a lot of really great techs out there. Just a few ding dongs making us all look bad. haha
thank you for the excellent video I am about to be faced with this and found your video tonight very informative.
I hope it helped. Blessings

Thank you very much i been following you on you tube you the best teacher keep it up
Thank you for showing us this. Mine is doing this.
good on you for helping out a fella in need. well done.
Awsome video sir. Thank you for your time and knowledge
Solved this problem by getting rid of the np246 boat anchor in an '03 Tahoe. It's been almost 4 years since I pulled it and swapped it for an np241c with a 4x4 PosiLok for the front diff. Still works exactly how it should.
Thank you so much!! Turns out all I had to do was clean the ground wires!
Excellent
Hello from Michigan thanks for sharing much appreciated 👍
Tim, I'm still driving that 08 Silverado with the weird shifting out of 4x4 issue. I went ahead and threw the front actuator on the front diff and it still does it. Borman says he thinks its a worn out part in the front end and wants me to bring the front diff to him to rebuild. The struggle is real! haha, great video brother!
Have you sampled the fluid in the diff? I’m sure if it has metal flak it probably needs some TLC. Too bad you sold your machine, you could use it to commute while your truck is down.
You are the maaannn!!! This fixed my escalade remote start/regular start issue. Something so simple with the ground on the chassis.. Didn't see any way to donate to ya brotha. Subscribed though. Ty
Yeah I wish you had you as my mechanic to you just bought make me want to drive from Alabama to Alaska do work on my truck good man! Honest as the day is long in the summertime in Alaska!
haha, ill give you a discount if you make the trip. Take care
Thank you for posting this video helped out a lot
You are now my go too guy thanks for the information,
A Wiseman once told me,,never use an impact to install bolts onto a transmission/ transfercase
Thanks saved me a trip to the shop. My 05 TAHOE has a fuse in the panel & found a 15A fuse, wasnt blown but changed it anyway & it started working. We'll see if it blows this one
Thank you sooooooooo much !!!!!!!!!! Thank you thank you!!! I watch your video replaced that exact part and it works!!!
Man thank you for this video needed it. Helped me figure out what’s wrong with the rig!
Glad it helped. Thanks for watching
Thank u for the video !
Your a good guy, for helping that family out. I believe in Karma. Thank you, Good video
Great info thanks for sharing this video 👍
Good info man, thank you!
Great video! Excellent explanation!
Has always nice job, info thxs Tim...
Thanks Ed!
Yo! Thanks for the video. I replaced my transfer case shift motor. I got a new one at O'Reilly's. Removed and installed it in an hour and 20 minutes, which included messing around with the ramps and getting the vehicle all safe. If viewers don't have a battery operated impact drill, now's the time to buy one, so you can take that gravel guard off in 20 seconds. I have a Rigid I bought at HD. The gravel guard bolts and 3 bolts on the T case motor are 15 mm. You can take the lower bolt out with the battery driven impact, but I used my 3/8" air ratchet for the middle and top bolts. I had to get them started with a long 3/8" ratchet first. They are tight and require some work to get them out, even after you get them started.
Before you line the new one up, put the electrical connector on and turn on your ignition, hold your brake and put the truck in NEUTRAL and select 2 HI on the push button. This will line up the drive key on the T Case Shift Motor. Put it back in PARK and turn off your ignition and resume installation.
PS: The drive shaft has a rubber boot on it with metal tie-wraps. You only need to cut the rear one. I goofed and cut both. I used a nice plastic tie-wrap on both when I put it back together. That boot is a tight fit, so it's not going anywhere.
Thanks again! My 4WD is back in business!
Hey Paul did your check engine light come on after your 4x4 stopped working? If that was the case what code were you getting? Thanks!
@@osvaldo07108 No, I never got a check engine light. I only got the Service 4WD message.
@@paulhowell7482 Hey did you had any indicator lights on the switch before changing the transfer case motor?
@@osvaldo07108 Sometimes I would have no lights. Then days later it would randomly begin working again. Or it would randomly have 4WD Hi selected. I just had a feeling it was the transfer case shift motor. When you push the button to go into auto 4WD, that motor activates to engage the transfer case. If I did that, then put it back to 2WD that's when it would start failing. I figured that had to be the root cause of my problems, so I rolled the dice and changed it. Problem solved.
@@paulhowell7482 Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. I’m having that exact same problem with my 07 Tahoe. I’ll be replacing that transfer case shift motor soon Thanks again!
Thank you for your help!!
well done, good information, thank you.
Thank you for the video. Seriously.
great video helping customer and watching cost good mechanic
Thanks Gary, im pretty sure most techs would do the same. Seems like most mechanics enjoy helping folks. Just a few give us a bad rap. Take care
Did you have any codes? My 4x4 doesn't work and I scanned for codes and I didn't get any codes related to the transfer case. Thank you for taking the time to show us your work!☺️
Awesome !!!!!
Very helpful thanks!!!!!
The fuse it was for me!! Thanks
great info !
I have a similar truck so I'm paying attention Tim!
Got don't pay attention to the part where I install a Dorman encoder motor and youll be ok...hahah, blessings friend. Hope things are good with you and the family.
Thanks for the tips- one of the best step by step videos I’ve seen. You’re on my first out list now!
I’m down the road in Kenai, trying to figure our 2001 GMC Yukon 4WD service light.
Replaced TCCM, cleaned the ground location and added dielectric grease. Replaced ATC fuse, it will switch from 2WD, to 4HI, but when going back to 2WD it blows the ATC fuse and service light comes back on.
Thinking there might be a short somewhere??? Doesn’t seem like the front diff actuator would be the problem.
Nice video.....i wish you have you garage here in Ecuador....God bless you
great video really nice you helping the person out in minnesota more snow not that clod just snow
I watched a video of some parking lot where seemed like twenty people got stuck trying to leave work. Even the plow trucks were getting stuck. Dang, you guys are giving Alaska a run for their money! Stay warm my friend!

Hey brother i live in anchorage too. I have the exact truck you just did the thrust washer on except mines a 2011. Guess what? i got all the way up to Clear space force station and yep..I'm having the same issue and when i got under the extension tube i could actually pull my 1/2 shaft out about an inch! I have the new washer and retainer at will-call in town "dealer only" part. I'm having them 2nd day aired to a buddy's p.o box and will be fixing it this Sunday if the parts get here. either way I'll be getting er done soon and ill let you know if you want how it shakes out. Thanks for the how to video, I appreciate it. Seems like an eazy fix no doubt!
Great video! My '08 2500 wouldn't go into 4 low and got service 4x4 warning. My local shop, which is usually pretty good, told me I needed a new TC. I was suspicious and decided to hold off as I didn't use 4x4 low much. Now it won't go into 4 high and get same message. I will check the ground and then the TC motor. I don't think the shop checked either of them.
May I ask did it let you go into 2hi
