@ThecardoctorTV Hello i have a 1999 gmc sierra 1500. My transfer case shift motor keeps failing ive gone through 4 of them in the last year. Any ideas. ?
Good point about that ground. On my 2000 that ground bolt is threaded into sheet steel, easily stripped out. I put a nut on the back so it couldn't move, when diagnosing an ABS code. You also make a good point about the cost of parts. However we who drive old cars save thousands of dollars per year from less depreciation and less insurance compared to newer vehicles! So, we shouldn't complain too much about the cost of parts. New vehicles built today are much more likely to fall apart before their time.
I just fixed my service 4wd light tonight. The 30 amp TREC fuse under the hood was blown. I didn't find it untill after cleaning the ground wires and changing the push button panel. Great video. Thanks!!!
Solved this problem by getting rid of the np246 boat anchor in an '03 Tahoe. It's been almost 4 years since I pulled it and swapped it for an np241c with a 4x4 PosiLok for the front diff. Still works exactly how it should.
This man knows what he's doing and he knows what he's talking about I really enjoyed your presentation I don't see how anyone can go wrong having you work on their vehicle thank you
At least you have a heart Tim. There are some of these millennials, er new technicians who want to get rich quick with the don't care how attitude. You obviously are not from that generation. By the way that Trailblazer AC pulley bypass belt trick worked spot on for my moms truck. Many thanks for showing us all that
Body still looks clean / solid... so worth putting money into it. A lot of people drive vehicles that are too big / not really needed... or simply don't have the funds to keep up with repairs. It's a wakeup call for some.
If you ever need a replacement body this is where to look, no rust around here. Sadly they steal these GM trucks of this vintage so you can find any body parts you need on ebay from the crack heads that part them out. I hope this one gets him a few more years of good service.
Hey, I watch lots of videos...but when I see one from you about a certain problem yours is always the one I watch. Common sense, right to the point...you have helped me out many many times. Thank you so much for posting your videos...you are much appreciated!!!

I replace the rear shocks in my 97 GMC 1500 four-wheel-drive. And I noticed shortly there after that it felt like the brakes were engaging possibly the emergency brake and I looked around tapped around sprayed some PB blaster applied the emergency brake and released and all that seemed fine it didn’t correct the issue it was like my tires were skidding and I couldn’t tell if it were brakes or something else. Anyway, after watching your video I remember that I was playing with the four-wheel-drive buttons on the dashboard and I usually have a light indicator showing which setting that it’s in, but sometimes that light isn’t displayed. No worries but I decided to double check that indicator on the dashboard and realize that it said 4HI. Once I pressed the button to put it in 2 Wheel Dr. the problem seem to go away. Which leads me to a new issue then I’ll probably run into win the snow hits here in the Midwest as to why the 4HI Doesn’t seem to be functioning properly as I hear the tire skid and squeak especially in reverse turning the wheel so somethings not engaging properly but I have not yet even looked into that. I’m wondering if it’s possibly a stuck switch because when I do press the button to switch it I hear it engage so I’m not sure sorry to make this a long story. Thank you.

In the telecom world we use this stuff called no-ox. It prevents oxidation on 48v dc power connections. Also works great on that ground connection to prevent future corrosion.
That’s a great tip for the ground on the frame. That’s awesome that you helped the guy out. Quick question, I’m planning on replacing my Transfer Case how do you know what position the transfer case is in when actuator motor is off and you turn it with Chanellocks. Also can you plug in the actuator when not installed on TC and run it with buttons to check it.

We have a 2000 Yukon XL SLT and lately it's a random ticking sound by driver's side lower windshield and now it's reading service 4WD and all the lights are lit up and will not let us switch to 2Hi
my switch started randomly lighting up on 2wd/4wd/neutral/4 on the fly/ or not at all. So I changed the switch out. When I first put the other one in, the encoder motor responded fine, so I thought I fixed it. However, next day I drove it, it went back to doing the same thing again with the service 4wd on the cluster again.
Hi what's your experience with this? 2005 Yukon, 5.3L 4x4, 223,000 miles, all stock, daily driver. I can just hear a clicking sound that varies with wheel speed (not rpms) when all else is quiet in cab and windows are down, driving next to a wall or barrier, at 10/15 mph or faster. But ONLY under load with accelerator pressed. Does not click when coasting, or not moving. Comes from under vehicle. I figure either driveshaft u-joint or rear wheel bearing, or maybe parking brake hardware (park brake is out of adjustment), but what do you think? U-joints look ok. A smidgen of play that I can feel but not really see, by hand, same on both ends. Not tight or blown out. Sealed type. Thank ya!
It sounds like that owner hasn't had much luck, we all have to pay for things but some people don't seem to get a break :-(. Sometimes i wonder if we should go back to basic rods and levers for basic stuff, overboard electronic controls are a problem just ready to fail. But if i had my way, there would be an engine computer only, everything else would be basic direct power switching. Too many computers for a tin box on wheels.
Tim, 03’; start the truck in the morning and the 4L push button light is on. I can shift into neutral and push 2H and it will Switch. From then on it will work properly until I turn off the truck. Hello, my motor was out so I was unable to put it into neutral before putting the new motor on. After connecting the wiring for the new motor, I turned the key to the on position and press the 2hi button to get it to match the tc. 2hi blinks for a minute and then goes back to neutral. Not sure why it won’t switch to 2hi. If I use channel locks to rotate it in the tc, how do I know when it’s in the right position? Thank you!

Agreed, its not like a gave away half my day on something, its just a small gesture to help our customers. I probably get more out of it th=an them anyway but you know how that is im sure. Blessings!
@ThecardoctorTV Hello i have a 1999 gmc sierra 1500. My transfer case shift motor keeps failing ive gone through 4 of them in the last year. Any ideas.
?
Thanks for your time to help people with your expertise. @75 percent of the electrical problems can be bad grounds
New vehicles built today are much more likely to fall apart before their time.
agreed, so sad we live in such a disposable time. I love these old trucks. Worth fixing for sure.
I just fixed my service 4wd light tonight. The 30 amp TREC fuse under the hood was blown. I didn't find it untill after cleaning the ground wires and changing the push button panel. Great video. Thanks!!!
4 years later you helped someone get back on the road, thanks to both.
Solved this problem by getting rid of the np246 boat anchor in an '03 Tahoe. It's been almost 4 years since I pulled it and swapped it for an np241c with a 4x4 PosiLok for the front diff. Still works exactly how it should.
Many thanks your a good dude. Having a vehicle stolen he's on hard times. You are commended for your service for him.
Many thanks for showing us all that
Thanks man, glad to help!
Hey bud I owe you a beer I changed that part out and now it works great thanks for you video
Hey, I watch lots of videos...but when I see one from you about a certain problem yours is always the one I watch. Common sense, right to the point...you have helped me out many many times. Thank you so much for posting your videos...you are much appreciated!!!
Thank you so much. You made my day.
Thanks Tim, that was very helpful. Quite an act of kindness you did as well. More than once I've been in these predicaments. Its very rewarding to be able to help out.
Right on. It is always better than to receive. Blessings.
@@ThecardoctorTV also only see lights on my 4wd switch when I first turn truck on. Then no lights
Need more mechanics like you buddy! Always good to help people out who are on hard times.
Your a good guy Tim. It's nice to see people helping those durring rough times.
Thank you Phil
Thanks, your suggestion about the ground wire fixed my 2003 4WD Chevy Suburban. Also, the ABS system wasn't working and fixing the ground wire fixed that as well.
Thank you sir. Great to meet someone who is always out to help a person in need and short on funding Very nicely done video. Have a great day. Looking forward to your next video
Thank you, I certainly didn't do the job for free but its very satisfying to help people when we can. Blessings to you!
You are awesome guy. For helping people don't have alot . God bless u sir.
Thanks for helping out the poor man. Sounds like he has hit some hard times. Everyone should have compassion for his fellow man. Especially when you know what their circumstances are. It's not always about the almighty dollar. God will repay those who do right by their fellow men. God bless you and your family!
Thanks Tim! Always good to see a GM truck video seeing that I own two of them.
We seem to have no shortage of them here. Take care
@@ThecardoctorTV man,. I just want to say thank you. You're a very good teacher. I remember when I was a kid you had to go to the library for the knowledge or at least have a set of encyclopedias. My kids look at me funny when I try to explain how amazing it is you have all the answers in your pocket
Great video! My '08 2500 wouldn't go into 4 low and got service 4x4 warning. My local shop, which is usually pretty good, told me I needed a new TC. I was suspicious and decided to hold off as I didn't use 4x4 low much. Now it won't go into 4 high and get same message. I will check the ground and then the TC motor. I don't think the shop checked either of them.
May I ask did it let you go into 2hi
thank you ...i had mine go out this morning...stopped to put in 4x4 so i could pull it back into the yard after taking it out so i could plow around it...and all i got was a clunk and now no gears...i think that neutral switch is gonna get me rolling again at least until i can get it in for the actuator motor to be replaced....
outstanding! Rare to see some good guys you can trust. Thank you for sharing.
Big Man with a Big Heart. Great job Tim.
Thanks, maybe ill use that as my new motto. haha
@@ThecardoctorTV I need your help and advice asap it's a 2003 tahoe. And I can't switch on the 4wd buttons. And it switch on its on. At times when I go from truck off. To truck on and I can't get it back to 2wd now. And I can't get my truck in drive or Rev and when switch back to park it makes a grind noise now.
Thanks Tim, my kids don't know how close they came to not having much of a Christmas, Christmas-lite so to speak, because those transfer case motors are not cheap, but I have to have 4WD this time of year, so thankful my problem was the ground wires, even though it didn't look very corroded, cleaned wires and frame rail, now have full functioning 4WD. I appreciate what you do, Thank you Tim, I'm subscribing !
Nice video! My 04 suburban goes right into 4 low, then I put it in neutral, and switch it to 2 high, will switching actuator out fix problem? thanks
I’m having this exact issue but intermittently. Did you ever figure it out?
@@DaveMBrown still doing same thing, when it gets warmer outside to work on it
@@lancemiller6039 I reseated the connectors on my switch and it hasn't happened again. The button illumination on the switch is gone too so I think the switch is just going bad. Takes a few minutes to take the switch out if you haven't yet.
Thanks saved me a trip to the shop. My 05 TAHOE has a fuse in the panel & found a 15A fuse, wasnt blown but changed it anyway & it started working. We'll see if it blows this one
Hey man, thanks for posting these vids. Was able to save $400 by servicing my ball joints myself.
I m super glad I was able to help. Thank you for watching my vids.
Thank you.
I've spent days working on this 02 Tahoe with 344,000 miles. Mostly drive train related repairs.
Well done, Tim. You have a big heart.
Thank you, its fun being a mechanic!
Bro could u help me figure my problem out I would really appreciate it thank u
I took my vehicle for inspection 97 Lincoln Town Car after 20 years in North Carolina is a visual inspection shot put it on the lift told me I needed a rear main seal in the back and set alarm in the front which I already had replaced two years ago we want to charge me $575 took it to another shop my friend says there's nothing wrong with your car took it somewhere else to get it inspected flying colors
bro?! way ta' go man! makes me want to drive to Anchorage so you could work on my truck.
What does it mean when the 4wd lights just flash when you press them?
In the telecom world we use this stuff called no-ox. It prevents oxidation on 48v dc power connections. Also works great on that ground connection to prevent future corrosion.
Watching you do the actual work was very helpful
That’s a great tip for the ground on the frame. That’s awesome that you helped the guy out. Quick question, I’m planning on replacing my Transfer Case how do you know what position the transfer case is in when actuator motor is off and you turn it with Chanellocks. Also can you plug in the actuator when not installed on TC and run it with buttons to check it.
Your a good man for helping folks in need. God Bless :)
Thank you so much!! Turns out all I had to do was clean the ground wires!
Excellent
Yeah I wish you had you as my mechanic to you just bought make me want to drive from Alabama to Alaska do work on my truck good man! Honest as the day is long in the summertime in Alaska!
haha, ill give you a discount if you make the trip. Take care
Hey brother i live in anchorage too. I have the exact truck you just did the thrust washer on except mines a 2011. Guess what? i got all the way up to Clear space force station and yep..I'm having the same issue and when i got under the extension tube i could actually pull my 1/2 shaft out about an inch! I have the new washer and retainer at will-call in town "dealer only" part. I'm having them 2nd day aired to a buddy's p.o box and will be fixing it this Sunday if the parts get here. either way I'll be getting er done soon and ill let you know if you want how it shakes out. Thanks for the how to video, I appreciate it. Seems like an eazy fix no doubt!
Great video. My 2004 GMC Sierra 1500 4wd with the 5.3 L makes a groaning noise when I turn to the left. You hear it inside the cab but not outside. Any idea what that is? Thx.
... thank you for busting knuckles.. on the west coast USA.. I appreciate your work on RUclips as well peace.. from Chico CA..
Great video, I have an 06 tahoe with the same problem but I also have my traction control light on would that be caused by the tc motor?
We need more mechanics like u for sure. The ones around here charge an arm and leg most of the time or half ass get the job done right. Hell i had one wanna charge me $20 just to drive a car i use to have just to listen to a noise it was making. 🤦🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️
Thanks, I am also rewinding to check the fuse mentioned, but mine has been going off and on in this similar manor with traction control turning off.
Good video ,what about when all lights are light up on the switch ,i thought it was the switch are replaced it but didn't any thoughts i would really appreciate it thanks.
Tim, I'm still driving that 08 Silverado with the weird shifting out of 4x4 issue. I went ahead and threw the front actuator on the front diff and it still does it. Borman says he thinks its a worn out part in the front end and wants me to bring the front diff to him to rebuild. The struggle is real! haha, great video brother!
Have you sampled the fluid in the diff? I’m sure if it has metal flak it probably needs some TLC. Too bad you sold your machine, you could use it to commute while your truck is down.
I hit subscribe just because of your customer service, buddy! I just bought a ‘97 GMC 1500 4x4 step side. I’ll need your help along the way. Keep up the great work my friend.
I am having this problem with my GMC 1500 .I looked up the pages in the manual for that fuse and cant find the ATC fuse that you talked about is it called by an other name for it .Thanks your video is very help full .
I know just what to look for now, thanks. I have a 2003 Tahoe and a 2003 suburban. This problem must be common among Chevy's of that era. Great job 👍 👍 love your channel!
However, next day I drove it, it went back to doing the same thing again with the service 4wd on the cluster again.
good on you for helping out a fella in need. well done.
We should go back to dogsleds!
Yes but where would you shove the diagnostic tool on a faulty husky, no no i don't want to know :-D
Tim, 03’; start the truck in the morning and the 4L push button light is on. I can shift into neutral and push 2H and it will
Switch. From then on it will work properly until I turn off the truck. Then back through the cycle. Nine times out of ten this is standard procedure. Any ideas for me? I’ve changed the switch twice.
A Wiseman once told me,,never use an impact to install bolts onto a transmission/ transfercase
The start in neutral tip got me back into two wheel drive! 🙏 🙏 🙏
Thank you!
Hey Tim was the check engine light on and if it was, what was the code you were getting? Thanks!
I have a 98 Chevy Silverado mine had a green ground wire that was on the frame that has corroded and broke off my four-wheel-drive doesn’t operate right every time I try to splice the wire to reconnect the wire where does that green wire run to from where it’s supposed to attach to the frame where does it go to the transfer case? Or where
I had to get my motor replaced for my 2007 Chevy Silverado classic replaced; however, after replacement I still couldn't use my 4x4 system? the message still occurs. The system worked find for a day and then it stopped? Could this be from a blown fuse now?
You are the maaannn!!! This fixed my escalade remote start/regular start issue. Something so simple with the ground on the chassis.. Didn't see any way to donate to ya brotha. Subscribed though. Ty
Hello, do you have any idea what could be the problem here....05 Silverado, push button 4x4 works great in Auto mode. All others sound like they're engaging but don't...also sound like they disengage but no 4 wheel drive?? Thank you , John.
Nice to watch a video and actually learn something. Great work Tim, it’s nice to see an honest man making his money the old fashioned way-good hard work!
Take care Tim and thanks so much for taking the time to produce the video’s, it’s much appreciated.
God Bless my friend.
I am thinking this could be my problem. Could this also be causing me rear wheels to skip when in 4wd?
Question if you can answer it .. I have a 04 chevy tahoe z71 5.3 , Everything works perfect BUT when I turned my truck ON and OFF the lights on the switch will jump to Neutral or 4x4 high or 4x4 low but it never activates the lights only changes is rear when it happens.. The switch is new I follow all the steps to clean the components for the 4x4 everything check up good but I can't figure out what is causing the lights to change to High, Low, Auto 4x4.. if you can answer that question I will appreciate thanks for those amazing videos
Thank you sooooooooo much !!!!!!!!!! Thank you thank you!!! I watch your video replaced that exact part and it works!!!
The morality of the working man. Very worthy. Working сlass)
If you dont have the tool to put the tcase motor in neutral, after you remove the drive line, how do you know what the neutral position is by looking at it?
What do I do if I don’t have a scan tool to put it in neutral like you did?
great video really nice you helping the person out in minnesota more snow not that clod just snow
I watched a video of some parking lot where seemed like twenty people got stuck trying to leave work. Even the plow trucks were getting stuck. Dang, you guys are giving Alaska a run for their money! Stay warm my friend!

OH, did you have a driveshaft rub through the harness? lame, good advice.
I have a 2003 gmc yukon xl 2500 so i turn the 4hi on and turn the steering wheel to the end. The car does not move and stops and there is something stuck. Is this considered misuse or perhaps a malfunction?
2006 sierra 1500 . My 4x4 push button works except for 4low. I press 4L and i hear a noise underneath as if the 4low is trying to engage, it does it every few seconds until i press 2h or 4h. Sometimes when driving it when i come to a stop the truck goes to AWD mode on its own. What can it be????? appreciate all the help i can get. Thanks
