I have a 05 chevy Silverado and my four wheel drive keeps engaging itself. Which is weird because I have to manually put it in four wheel drive. What can this possibly be? Transfer case maybe?
9 out of 10 times I personally have changed any seal on any part of a vehicle transmission transfer case engine it doesn't matter what, if the seal is leaking just changing it is not usually the case. If the vehicle has sat a long time or is old maybe, but if the seal goes bad it's usually because whatever it is sealing is moving around from a bearing or bushing that has gone bad. Always always check that before just tossing in a seal and save yourself a major headache from doing things twice and possibly looking like an ass in front of a customer also. Again that is just in my experience so others may have a different option but it's always better to check something and make sure rather then just throwing new seals in things.
Great video. Folks this video covers EVERYTHING readily serviceable on the transfer case, short of internal component failure such as bearings or the clutch pack. Good stuff. The current problem I have on my 07 Tahoe is the "service 4wd" light and the Tcase acting weird occasionally. I am 99% sure it is the encoder ring in the Tcase shifting motor. A $60 part and about 1.5 hour of simple DIY job in the home garage.
My 98 K1500 is actually "like a rock". Manual 4wd shift, linkage was gettin funky, slipping it into nuetral by itself. Well had low fluid, topped it up, runnin "like a rock"
Very helpful. Mine in my 2006 Silverado had a pin hole leak and a local shop said "replace the whole thing for $4000" said no. Glad i know what to do if my backyard fix doesnt hold.
Good educational video, I have a 1997 Chevrolet Silverado 4x4. I know the actuator needs to be replaced, the transfer case stopped working and had it overhauled and still won't work. The actuator didn't get replaced so I assume that's what needs to be replaced. Thanks for the great videos you post, keep up with the good work.
About the pump rub issue. It's not an IF but a WHEN problem. My dad's 02 GMC had the pump rub failure and ended up having to replace the entire t-case because it had leaked all the fluid out and was ruined. I have an 06 Chevy and after seeing what my dad went through I decided I better pull my t-case and fix it before it did the same as my dad's. My t-case had about 90K less miles than my dad's but the rear case hslf was definitely showing considerable amounts of wear in the pump housing and would've eventually been a hole or holes 100%. MA auto (Merchant Auto) builds and sells a "pump rub kit" that totally elimates any adverse wearing effects from the fluid pump to the rear case half. The tiny steel plate GM "bandaided" in the later model cases will also fail (mine was broken and was stuck to the debris magnet) so that is not recommended. The MA Auto kit was about $80 which is WAY less than a $2500 t-case!
Love watching the motivation man. Every video saving my life from all the bad things happening in my life for the last 2 years now and still continuing everyday sometimes. Especially the last years. A car accident in my Yukon Denali and I shattered my left leg shen bone that morning at 6:am ( January 3th 2018 )and then now to finding out my wife of 7 years now has been cheating on me for awhile. So I'm starting the process to start be a parts. I have a 10 yr old son from my first x, a 4 yr old daughter with my soon to be x , and now we separating she saying she is carrying again. So much fun in life lol . Keeping the up beat emotions bout every thing will get better soon.
Been through pretty much everything you spoke of. It can always be worse my friend. Remembering that at the right time can get you out of bed. You are now free to complete the things for yourself that you never had time for. Dig deep, be stoic and grind. Good luck.... Also, don't know how much residual pain you have but I'm mostly metal from my hips down so I have a fair amount of pain on a regular. I take Kratom instead of narcotics and my quality of life is much better than it was with pain meds. Takes a bit to get used to/good at but has been totally worth it.
Hands down the biggest issue is the drain plug hole cracking. I did a standard fluid drain and fill and when torquing back down to factory specs, I watched the case crack. Major failure on GMs part. Cheapest fix is JB weld for aluminum. The right fix is a $170 back half case on the cheapest end. GM cases are $400+
Thanks for the informative video. i noticed a minor leak for the tail shaft seal area. Is it something that requires immediate action of the car can be used to next service
My encoder motor failed. TIP- When you get a new encoder motor to replace it DO NOT plug the harness in and push any of the 4x4 buttons before you mount the motor onto the transfer case. I had a hell of a time getting it clocked correctly again👍🇺🇲
Whaay would anyone want to even try that. You're supposed to put the tcase in 4 hi before you start. It it won't work you have to do it by hand. The instructions already say not to alter the position of the motor
I have an issue with my 1997 k2500 where it will engage into 2 high and 4 high with no issue but when I put it in 4 low it tries to engage but it will make a clank noise while trying to engage and then go into 4 high
Awesome video, although I didn’t see anything about a output shaft bearing… where can I get those little individual parts and is it possible to just replace that without wrecking anything else in the tcase? I have a new one from Gm waiting at the stealership for 2750 cad$ but really don’t want to spend all that.
So I’m getting my transfer case replaced the transfer case has 53,000 miles, After replacement will my car mileage change or how would I know that my mechanic put in my transfer case with the 53k miles on it ?
I have a99gmc suburban with 246 transfer case .auto 4 wheel drive push button.it was leaking fluid.internal pump wore a pin hole in rear transfer case.i got a rebuild kit an back half of case.friend of mind and owns trans shop.we rebuilt it an need chain installed .no more leaks.this is common on246 new process t cases.99 to 07 246 t cases.my other friend has a2002gmc 1500 pickup with same t case.his son ran the truck out of transfer case fluid by detroit it smoke t case.case was not salavagable.!
I have a '01 Durango that my wife picked up for me. Just wondering if I can drive it around with the transfer case being bad in it without replacing it as long as they keep it in two-wheel drive and maybe take out CB axle going to the front wheels meaning drive shaft going to the front wheels. Can I still drive it?
So what I just collected from this is if your going to just completely pull the transfer case out just replace it and the connectors. As long as it’s within budget of course.
I just got a 2003 Yukon and the front drive shaft boot is completely rotted away. I can get a new boot back on but do I need ot worry about damage to the shaft or transfer case, since theres no way to know how long its been off?
I have a 07 Escalade EXT AWD and when i put it in reverse or drive the transfer case makes a loud grind or rattle sound. I know its the transfer case cuz i went under there and put my hand on the transfer case while it was in gear and i can feel something wrong going on inside. My question is would my truck still drive from the rear wheels if the transfer case went out and if the rear wheels dont operate can that be a transmission issues?
O7 YUKON 5.3 4X4. Has a code service 4 wheel drive. Indicator light works some times. Every once in a while on start up it is in 4 wheel drive. Takes a while to get to 45mph with a hard shift into 2nd gear. After that, it will go to 70mph no problem. But if I slow down or come to a full stop, I have to start the whole process all over again. Is there away to disconnect the 4 wheel drive all together? Maybe pull a fuse? It seems to be getting worse as it gets colder.
Love your videos! Always well informed after watching them. I have a question today about my 2001 Chevy Silverado 2500HD . Previous owner had the split driveshaft bushing go out. It went long enough to wear out the rear transfer case bushing and gall up the slip yoke. Where can I purchase just the bushing? And, do I have to remove the whole transfer case to do this? Or can the rear housing be removed while the transfer case is still in the truck? Thank you greatly for any information. Mike
A couple years ago, mine transfer case grenaded. Luckily I pulled over right away. Bad thing is I was in 2wd, on the highway. Had it fixed, now I'm having some whining coming from the front end, when in 4wd. Trying to find out what it is. Maybe a bad pinion or hub assembly. Really only does it at low speeds and declaration.
I have a 01 Tahoe 4 wd mine won’t go in to low four after you drive it but when the truck cools off after one hr then the transfer case will go in to low four I replaced the switch in the dash the computer behind the dash the actuator and the coda motor and put a new plug on the wires and it is full and is full of fluid
Hello and thxs for your info. I have a question. My four wheel Chevy after a few weeks gets stuck into four wheel high. The shifter is on the floor. It's a 2009 2500 HD with 6.0 engine. I took it to one shop and the guy said the seal was rusted and needed replacing. Depending on what he sees inside will determine on weather I need a new transfer case. My thing is this. I only use four wheel high in the winter months. That's from December to March. Afterwards my shifter won't shift out of four wheel high. Can that be the shifter or the transfer case itself. The shop wants to charge me $1600 to fix whatever it is. I'm thinking that's way to high. Should I get a second opinion.
I think my t case is growling on my 99 Sierra. I guess it could be the front diff growling for all know. Did it get any better after adding fluid? Good luck ✌️

So I've just had the entire drive train replaced in my 2008 4x4 suburban and when I try to use the 4x4 it says service the system and will not disengage unless I do it manually......Is that the electric motor sensor you showed at the end of the video.....
my engine light lit up on thursday after getting new exhaust since it had a leak and as of yesterday (9/14/24) i have a service 4wd msg on the odometer. according to the shop it's either a rear main seal leak or a transmission leak and won't know till monday 9/16/24
Hello, i just nougjt a 2024 ram 2500 and moticed transmission fluid at the tailshadt seal. Sent pics to dealer and they said ots normal to weep some fluid. Is this true?
I have a rusted out 2004 chevy trailblazer ext 4wd that has a transfer case but it will not shift so not sure if it is the transmission or the transfer case or a solenoid or whatever.

My mom recently hit something on the front passenger side of her 2003 silverado. Now when you put it in 4x4 there is a friction noise coming from the front passenger side. Also doesn't want to go back into 2H. I have to put it in 2nd go up to 15mph and drop it in second for it to go into 2H. Any ideas on what this might be?
I have a 87 K5 Blazer np208 transfer case it jumps out of gear in two-wheel drive makes nothing but grinding sounds have to put it in four-wheel to make it home any idea what my issue is? Thanks for your time
I have an awd trailblazer ss and my trans is slipping and making a ticking whining type of noise. But I don’t have a check engine light on. And sometimes it’s doesn’t slip. Any ideas on what it could be?
I have not got a hold of a Chevy dealer can you tell me what kind of oil goes in the transfer case. Auto parts stores told me 75/195 or they have told me a GM part number
What about a clicking when I’m in 4 high and it won’t go into 4 low, the light just blinks. The clicking sounds like gears now fully connecting. 2012 Chevy Colorado,
My 2007 Avalanche ltz in cold weather says service 4x4 or if indrive it for a while in 2wd (20mins) and the switch it to auto its fine but when i turn on a wet road it feels like the 4x4 is binding. Changed all the fluids with what they spec and still does it. . Like i said when the truck is driven for more than 20 minufes in cold it switches to 4 high and auto but when in auto it feels like its binding. Not sure what it could be.
2012 Acadia w/approx 85K well maintained miles has recently been shifting into 4wd on the fly and randomly. Brought it into one of the few remaining Sears Auto Centers few mos ago where they changed the tranny fluid w/out disturbing filter/pan. Noticeable downshift and "Traction Control Off, Service Stabilitrak, Service Traction Control and Engine Power is Reduced" msgs come on as result. Thoughts please, thanks!

2002 Chevy Silverado 1500HD P0502 CODE I replaced all the speed sensors on the transfer case itself, but still no luck. speedo isnt working and shifts rough. it threw the code when i was on the highway and hit a bumb and made me come out of cruise control and was shifting irratically. would there be another sensor im missing?? or bad wiring? i did notice the face of one of the sensors had been worn. lately i noticed it will work sometimes but when it shifts into 2nd hard i lose speed readings. Ive done my best to try and research what the issue is before i take it to the shop. If anybody might have an idea please comment and it would be much apprecitated!!

Hi, I have an 04 Chevy Avalanche 1500 with a transfer case and I just found out that a Alan bolt had back off , is there anything else behind that bolt ?
So I'm trying to replace my VSS on my 99 silverado 1500 4x4, and I notices I have 2 sensors on the tail end of the transfer case, one on the driver side and one on the passenger side, set about 90 degrees apart from each other, and I have no idea which one is which. Any help would be appreciated.
I Have a 2013 gm 3500 dually. Put truck in reverse no noise at all but will not move, acts like it’s in reverse. Put truck in drive, loud clunk noise, push gas pedal halfway to floor board and barely moves 5mph. Any idea what this could be??? Really could use some advice

Just bought a brand new t-case for my 04 silverado, and its leaking from the gasket from the transmission to the trasfer case. Will it leak into my transfer case or should it be okay for a little bit till i can fix it. I work the night shift so its a little difficult to make time to fix it. The transfer case only has 1,500kms on it and i would really like to avoid blowing it up, any help is appreciated 😅

Is there any different problem with the Sierra Denali 6.0 AWD?
What's the name of part can't find it on 1a parts page?
I have a 05 chevy Silverado and my four wheel drive keeps engaging itself. Which is weird because I have to manually put it in four wheel drive. What can this possibly be? Transfer case maybe?
Done with dealerships. Disgusted with them actually, so this is the info I need to be shop independent. Thanks.
Hands down your channel is the absolute best! And no BS. Thanks a ton. You've made me a "certified RUclips mechanic "😂
This 1A Auto guy has saved me thousands of dollars. They also sell pretty decent parts

Should the drive shaft coming out of the transfer case to the front diff be spinning in 2WD for a 2014 GMC Sierra 1500?
Do you have a video to show how to do the case half replacement
the hole that get's worn into the case is from the fluid pump shucking back & forth ,there is a steel protector plate avallable to prevent this.
My truck sounds like one of the wheels has bad ball bearings. But dang I think it's the transfer case 😵💫

So I've just had the entire drive train replaced in my 2008 4x4 suburban and when I try to use the 4x4 it says service the system and will not disengage unless I do it manually......Is that the electric motor sensor you showed at the end of the video.....
What ended up being the issue?
my engine light lit up on thursday after getting new exhaust since it had a leak and as of yesterday (9/14/24) i have a service 4wd msg on the odometer. according to the shop it's either a rear main seal leak or a transmission leak and won't know till monday 9/16/24

I replaced all the speed sensors on the transfer case itself, but still no luck. speedo isnt working and shifts rough. it threw the code when i was on the highway and hit a bumb and made me come out of cruise control and was shifting irratically. would there be another sensor im missing?? or bad wiring? i did notice the face of one of the sensors had been worn. lately i noticed it will work sometimes but when it shifts into 2nd hard i lose speed readings.
Ive done my best to try and research what the issue is before i take it to the shop. If anybody might have an idea please comment and it would be much apprecitated!!
Nice video, always on point 👌

Just bought a brand new t-case for my 04 silverado, and its leaking from the gasket from the transmission to the trasfer case. Will it leak into my transfer case or should it be okay for a little bit till i can fix it. I work the night shift so its a little difficult to make time to fix it. The transfer case only has 1,500kms on it and i would really like to avoid blowing it up, any help is appreciated 😅
The oil is from the transmission, keep an eye on the tranny oil level. The oil isn't pressurized so the transfer case seal should keep it out.
So this point I just wanna turn my 1999 GMC Yukon 4x4 into a rear wheel drive. How would I go by doing that
