I’ve heard and enjoyed a smattering of Genesis’ music from the early 1970s to the point of Mr. Collins’ departure. Ever since I first heard this song in this video on MTV back in 1983, it has been my hands-down favorite. It’s not of any style for which the band is known, but they created a perfect storm of a song: Mr. Banks’ haunting keyboard passages and riffs, Mr. Rutherford’s subdued yet roaring guitar chords and tremolo effects, Mr. Collins’ intense and punctuative drumming, and Mr. Collins’ heart-rending vocals and sinister vocalizations. I consider this song to be the band’s magnum opus.
There has always been something Extremely Special about this song...in my mind at least! Since i first heard it back in 1985, i hold this album up to any in the last 40 years!! MTV sank with popular culture. I remember the moment MTV turned into dog dung. In the mid 90s, they dedicated a whole weekend to green screen scrolling names of hate crime victims. After that it was Road Rules, Teen Mom, and other vomit bag fodder.

When I was a kid I asked my mom to give Phil Collins a call because I wanted to sing with him. I was always harmonizing with everything Genesis since I was 5. I ate, lived and breathed Phil Collins. She said we can't call him and I cried LOLOLOL
I have a huge respect for Phil. He's been through some shit. He sings what's in many of our hearts. It was taboo to talk about abuse in that Era. But here we are, us survivors.
Exactly, I use to listen a lot this music when I was more than 10 years old, I think it was a strong music, give strenght, but now I think it was too strong for my age, very lucky to hear, understand the lyrics and sing. My relationship with my mother was a stress, abusive 💪a lot of people had bad experiences, thank you for your comment
@@docsavage8640 I disagree..this song has Phil's fingerprints all over it. Its a lo-fi drum loop track from Phil's Linn Drum machine (we all know Phil LOVES his drum machines)...with a fairly simple keyboard riff on top. Now..Tony definitely added a lil spice to it, for sure..but that's a Phil chord progression. This song also has an eerie similar keyboard feel like "I Don't Care Anymore" and "I Can Hear Through These Walls" has as well.
This type of music it doesn’t exist anymore unfortunately. Phil Collins to me one of the best with amazing songs and the tune it’s so good. If you agreed with me just like. 🙏🏽🙏🏽👌🏾💖👏👏🏴🇵🇹
Thanks for posting this. The "gated reverb" effect on the drums was invented by Phil and producer Hugh Padgham, and used first on 'Intruder' by Peter Gabriel on his third solo album.
I remember buying both the Peter Gabriel "Melt" album that had 'Intruder' on it as well as the "Genesis" album with 'Mama' at uni. People into music at the time knew Phil Collins was the drummer that invented gated reverb 'by accident'. Genesis, Phil Collins, and Peter Gabriel had a huge impact on my music collection, from HS into my early 30's.
I’ve been a Genesis fan since the late 70s (since ‘And then there were three’) and vividly remember hearing this song premiering for the first time on ‘Friday Night Videos’ in late 1983- also saw Genesis at MSG in NYC that tour; not a bad way to grow up 😊

It most reminds me of how cool MTV used to be, used to see this a lot back then..
MTV sank with popular culture. I remember the moment MTV turned into dog dung. In the mid 90s, they dedicated a whole weekend to green screen scrolling names of hate crime victims. After that it was Road Rules, Teen Mom, and other vomit bag fodder.
I remember listening to this album over & over again as a kid. Very powerful lyrics !!!

Take me back to the 80s so I can have my MTV!!😭😭😎
You got that right Ken .MTV back in the 80's was awesome!!
This is my 23rd favorite song!
Don't Go! Mama, Mama please don't go!
I wanted to sing this at my Mother's Funeral last month but I was too choked up
I shed tears 😢. I lost mine last month
My favorite song 🎵 Phil sings
@carlwhite3634 my condolences
Genesis - Mama
A masterpiece - what a voice
ya autumn 1983..this song plus a few others seem to fit into the short dark days of November 83
blink your eyes ...boom its 2024...you aged 40 years all your friends have grown old....it went so fast..happy others from that time can come and reminisce here
hugs to you all
we are all in this together 😊😊
When I was a kid I asked my mom to give Phil Collins a call because I wanted to sing with him. I was always harmonizing with everything Genesis since I was 5. I ate, lived and breathed Phil Collins. She said we can't call him and I cried LOLOLOL
haha, What a SILLY/CUTE/FUNNY Story, LOL! 😝 😂
Precious story, wish you could have met him ... and sang with him.
@@tammyovering4752 I know. For real lol
@@Military450Veteran Thank you for your service sir 🗽

This song is the definition of a true 80s banger.❤❤❤
I have a huge respect for Phil. He's been through some shit. He sings what's in many of our hearts. It was taboo to talk about abuse in that Era. But here we are, us survivors.
Exactly, I use to listen a lot this music when I was more than 10 years old, I think it was a strong music, give strenght, but now I think it was too strong for my age, very lucky to hear, understand the lyrics and sing.
My relationship with my mother was a stress, abusive 💪a lot of people had bad experiences, thank you for your comment
@ivanadias1210 same here. 10 years as well. Abuse from mom is not talked about enough...you're here and I hope you are doing ok❤
This is THE Phil Collins! Mama, In The Air Tonight and I Don't Care Anymore! Creative dark? I love it!
Another outstanding masterpiece!!! ❤️❤️❤️🎵🎵🎶🎶🎶

Phil Collins and Genesis hits are timeless, unique and unforgettable!!! I love them!😍🎶💓
Such an epic song...Phil Collins always had a genius knack for taking a fairly simple melody and turning it into big sound.
You’re right about that!!!
This is a Genesis song.
Another example is «That’s all». A simple song kept simple. Genious!
Except he's only 1/3 of what made this song
@@docsavage8640 I disagree..this song has Phil's fingerprints all over it. Its a lo-fi drum loop track from Phil's Linn Drum machine (we all know Phil LOVES his drum machines)...with a fairly simple keyboard riff on top.
Now..Tony definitely added a lil spice to it, for sure..but that's a Phil chord progression.
This song also has an eerie similar keyboard feel like "I Don't Care Anymore" and "I Can Hear Through These Walls" has as well.
Man am I psyched that these videos are available.
Great stuff
Oh yeah!

Why wouldn't they be ?
HAA HAA-He-ooooohhhh!
Same, I now have a greater appreciation for Classic Rock
Omg! Yes! I miss good music and musicians who played instruments, wrote songs and sang them!!! Real musicians
So much emotion on his face.....I am a forever fan 💗
I know Right!!!
This type of music it doesn’t exist anymore unfortunately. Phil Collins to me one of the best with amazing songs and the tune it’s so good. If you agreed with me just like. 🙏🏽🙏🏽👌🏾💖👏👏🏴🇵🇹
Talent has the right to shout.
Thanks for posting this. The "gated reverb" effect on the drums was invented by Phil and producer Hugh Padgham, and used first on 'Intruder' by Peter Gabriel on his third solo album.
Thanks for this info. So interesting!
adamtzsch love Peter Gabirel. Games without frontiers.
STILL one of their best hits!! 💙
True!!!
I’ve been a Genesis fan since the late 70s (since ‘And then there were three’) and vividly remember hearing this song premiering for the first time on ‘Friday Night Videos’ in late 1983- also saw Genesis at MSG in NYC that tour; not a bad way to grow up 😊
this was the coolest song in history when it came out. unexpected, uncharacteristic and eerie. what a sound!
An episode of the original Magnum PI brought me here again🌺
I was just looking for that episode.
Death and taxes was the name of the episode.....@@tracybosworth1033
Miami Vice...In the air tonight...Phil Collins
@@tracybosworth1033 Death and Taxes
When I was a kid this song gave me the willies seeing the video . But today I can say it is nothing less than pure musical genius.
After I heard this record I was never the same again!!! My brains did pirouettes. I love this band.
