Brian, as a newcomer to fly fishing, i have immersed myself in introductory videos, but yours is, hands down, the best I have found. It is superbly produced, and your instruction is crystal clear. You are clearly an excellent teacher, and I genuinely have a better understanding of the basic cast technique. I look forward to watching all of your materials. Thank you for a great product.

Brian. Can't thank you enough!!! As previously mentioned by so many others , the way you break it down is absolutely amazing. I watched and took notes, and gradually bought my rod, reel and line when I was confident enough after watching and re-watching, and moved forward from there. I'm still learning so much and I will definitely keep watching to learn more. I'm from South Africa, so I was one of those who believed it was an expensive sport but with your guidance, learnt how to approach looking and buying the right equipment. I can't thank you enough!!!!

I live in New Zealand, and have been fly fishing for over 45 years, after being taught by a late friend who was one of the best guides in the country. I've even tried to teach a few friends how to cast, some with success, and others not so good. With all my experience, I must say that this is THE BEST explanation and demonstration of the mechanics of fly fishing I've EVER seen!! Thanks Brian, even I got quite a bit out of this video!! Sometimes, early in the season, my casting can be a bit crappy, so I'll look at your videos and be instantly cured!! GREAT video!!

I always explain it as 11 and 2....11 is the back (up cast) and 2 is the front cast...makes sense to me as an observer, but not so much as the caster I suppose.
This is another example of two different types of brains...like map reading, there's "north up" folks and there's "direction up" folks.

So I last week I went to Colorado outside of Estes Park to go fishing with some friends. They were going to fly fish and I had never cast a fly rod. So I went and bought a cheap Shakespeare combo kit. I searched RUclips and found your lessons and watched the 1st 14 videos and then practiced your casting techniques for about 30 minutes in my front yard.
Long story short, I had an amazing time fishing and my friends didn't believe I had never cast a fly rob before! Thank you for taking the time to post these videos. I'm a fan.

Brian.... You are the BEST instructor I have seen on RUclips - this video and the content is the BEST ever - I am taking two old University friends (we are all 62 now..) who want to develop their fly fishing skills (as both are novices) away for a weekend to trout lakes I am a member at here in North Yorkshire (England), and I have sent both the link to this video, and told them "STOP watching all the other instructional videos on how to cast, and WATCH this over and over again... THEN get out and practice!" It is simply the gold standard for me - each morning before we set out to the lakes, I'm going to show this video over breakfast as a recap. I'm no genius myself, but I've fly fished regularly for 4 years now, and I wish I'd seen THIS video when I started... Absolutely fantastic! And your accent is great too - very easy to listen to... THANK YOU!!

Brian - For a long time I’ve wanted to go fly fishing but was intimidated when going into a fishing shop… not just from price but for guys talking down or being pushy with the $400 plus half and full day “experiences.” I just wanted to start and try it on my own first. So… I went fly fishing for the first time yesterday with my brand new TFO 5wt/9ft combo outfit. Within 15 minutes I caught my first fish ever! I didn’t catch another fish but that’s OK. No pun intended but I’m hooked! I have enjoyed your series a great deal and it has been very helpful. I did in fact lose two flies yesterday and after watching this video I bet I know why. So, I’m going to go out and try again today while making the local retailer that much more financially successful in my purchase of a few additional flies! Thanks again for your help in me getting started in fly fishing and also not solving the national debt in the process! I now have something I can do with my sons that they enjoy so much as well. Your videos are better than all the rest of them out there put together! 🎣

I just bought a couple of fly rods last year, and due to knee and hip surgery, didn't get to fish with them much. I did get to practice out in the yard, but was very inconsistent, which is very frustrating. Started practicing recently with the same old issues until I heard something in this video that made all the difference in the world. You have to raise the rod and get as much of the fly line off the water/ground before starting the back cast. What a difference this has made. Just this simple adjustment that I missed watching this video in the past has given me more confidence and I can't wait to get to the water now and try it out.

Fly fishing can get very complicated discussing different advanced techniques, but you do a great job keeping it to a few critical points, and stressing ‘no stress’. Simple is easy. It’s all timing and not raw power. Looking forwarded watching more of your videos, you are never too old to pick up a gem or two, or knock the rust off of an aspect learned long ago. Thanks!

Fly Fishing is something I have always wanted to learn. My wife bought me a fly fishing combo from one of the big stores for Christmas. She asked a salesman for help, but the guy at the store said bigger is better and she came home with an 8 wt rod. I found your You Tube Channel and have watched the entire 14 part "Getting Started in Fly Fishing" series, and now know that I probably shouldn't be starting out with an 8 wt rod. We talked and I will be returning my fly fishing combo. We are in Dayton but will be north of Columbus for a couple days and are planning to swing by your shop either Jan 3, or Jan 4, to let you help in the selection of a rod and reel or one of your combo sets. Your series has helped de-mystify Fly Fishing for me and I feel I am in a much better place of understanding what to ask as much as what to do. Looking forward to my visit.

ok... here is a question, in the 29:37 minute, when you say don't let the line (...) asummin don't let the line throw fly free because the reels stop it (not like spinning reel obviously) then, if I need to do a cast farther than the previous throw, what I have to do? take out more line backing from the reel before the cast?

Thanks, Brian! planning a big trip with some experienced fly fisherman next month to Montana! Went up to the AuSable River in MI today and dropped a pretty penny on an outfit... rod, reel, waders, boots, front vest sling & some tools & fly's... then hit the river for some practice, and not since I was 15yrs old... (now a young 56) and was doing a lot of the mistakes you mention here like 'snapping' my upcast too quick and overcompensating on my downcast... I can clearly see through your vid here when the camera was aways back the shape of your loops compared to what mine prob were. Very helpful, & clearly stated/filmed. I'll be out in my backyard tomorrow, and the next, and next, and... lol. :Excellent teacher, this one is." (says Yoda) where do i send my check?! ;) thanx bunches ~

Brian, thank you so much for Fly Casting 101. I haven't been an active fly fisherman in over fifteen years and decided that my hiatus was over. I appreciate being a D+ student and you have helped reinvigorate how important the basics really are. I've been out a few times this year, but I am nothing compared to what I used to be and realized that I needed help. Your instructional video and explanations inspired me to subscribe, something I rarely do. I look forward to more of your instruction and putting this into play, getting outdoors, and exploring the rivers and lakes that my area of Western Washington has to offer, thanks again!

Brian, I scored a good deal on some pretty decent fly fishing equipment over five years ago, and ever since I've been casting wide loops, cracking whips and just generally getting frustrated with the sport.
After 34 minutes of your video, I went to bed (it was late) excited and confident that I'd be able to throw a friggin' line the next day. My daughter and I went out (I wanted to see if it really was easy to teach a kid), and after giving her a few minutes of reiteration of your instructions, we were both throwing line, and nailing something that'd been elusive to me for years: having the fly line tip touch the water (ok ok, my yard's grass, but still) before the rest of the line did. And best of all, I'm so relaxed now my hand doesn't hurt while doing it. Looking forward to hitting the water next week when my trailer park opens! Thanks for the down-to-earth and simple instruction that's cemented my addiction to the sport! Oh, and through relaxing my grip, relaxing my cast, etc., I was even able to experience that ellusive feeling of the "rod loading". That was awesome, too!
