I'm glad you get into the technical aspects of fly fishing. It's not all rocket science, but there are many factors, depending on so many things. I have spent many years and a lot of money doing things wrong, dealing with frustrations, and almost gave up Fly Fishing a few times because of bad information. You hit the nail on the head with this video, and until everyone learns how to get to your target, and present to your target properly, unfortunately you will probably be frustrated. I change my leader and set up, sometimes a few different ways within 100 feet on the same river. It's all about conditions, and how I need to get to my target. Figure out easy systems on the river to help change out quick, but also saying that, don't get frustrated. River therapy is part of the experience. When changing things up, take it all in. Don't forget to look up. It's an amazing hobby/sport. Thanks for all you do Brian, we need more like you in the business.

@@Madriveroutfitters I thought I figured it out lmao, I guess I'm still over thinking it. When it comes to dry flys and small jig streamers I understand but throwing heavy flys and big streamers I'm slightly lost. I think where I'm going wrong is trying to use pre tapered leaders with the tippet being too thin. I measured some 20 pound mono and it sits around .016" I guess I should float it down from 20lb, 15lb, then 10lb for the taper. I'm probably best just to email him huh 🤣

In my view, leaders are the actual part of the fly line system that delivers the fly at the end of the cast. Yet, of the components (rod, reel, fly line, leader) of the casting process it seems leaders are the least understood. Your videos have been my go to for information regarding the use of the leader and has greatly improved my casting and fish catching abilities. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

I agree mostly with the "double tippet " thing. If you understand the taper of the tapered leader you can continue the taper from a 2x to a 3x or 4x or whatever. Its a good idea to know how to do this if you find yourself in a situation where you dont have the right leader and you want a longer lower diameter leader for spooky fish. Or maybe you find yourself nymphing unexpectedly. There are a number of different situations where you might want manipulate a ready made tapered leader actually. It would be nice to have a ready made for every situation, but it doesn't always work out that way. Which after watching the whole video you covered perfectly in the last few minutes haha
