Truly this channel is a Godsend. I haven't seen any other fly fishing channels that go into such great detail about the nuance of the sport. Huge fan, and thank you for all of your hard work further educating the world about the hobby we all love. Thinking I might have to plan a fishing trip down to Ohio some time in the future
This is the first time I ever heard someone who is knowledge bowl in the fly fishing industry explain leaders and the live leaders the difference between contact and noncontact fishing. Great video - a must save and a must share.
"Good leaders start with the butt." Probably not an ideal shirt to wear in a corporate environment, but it would be SO fun before being walked out with the dreaded white box. 😀
This is such great information. I never thought to use different leader stiffness for contact/non-contact fishing. I always just matched the stiffness to my fly line for everything.
I'd still like to see "The End of The Line" book published because I can read it on the stream bank when I'm taking a break from fishing. But until that comes along these videos are great. Keep the good stuff coming guys.
This is a brilliant channel! I'm a dry fly aficionado from Sweden who never really got into streamer fishing. Even if I know that most big Browns are caught by streamer anglers, I just kept waiting for the hatch. 😊 But after watching your tutorials on streamer fishing - and the leader discussions in particular - I've changed my mind. My streamer fishing was basically a random streamer attached to my floating line and a looooong leader! Failure!!! I can't wait to get a decent sink/tip line and a short leader like you advise. And a bunch of modern streamer of course. Thank you for an outstanding channel and your friendly, informativ approach. ❤️ You have many subscribors I noticed, not surprised!
Thank you, Brian, and Crew. This is what you do best...experience, understanding, re-examining, sharing wisdom and thoughts about casting physics. The most helpful instruction in my "DIY in the fly fishing boonies" experience. When is the "Leader Book" going to be published? I'd pre-order even the roughest version of that cookbook. Thanks again.
Brian, you are the Walter Cronkite of fly fishing tutorials - if not fly fishing itself. Thank you and welcome to our living room. Now everybody be quiet, Brian's on. And pay attention.
Good one. A possible suggestion for a future video - I learn well from a troubleshooting type instruction. "Is this thing happening? You are either doing a, b or c". Show me more screw ups. 😊
NB: For us UK anglers the sizes of diameter lines need converting to mm thickness. So a conversion chart would be useful to convert the sizes thus making the detail add up in these superb video guides. ( The principles are obviously the same however)
Your guy's videos are stellar! I have learned so much from them - thanks for the content. General question - would you recommend your nymph leader formula across the board -- for trout in big Montana water to say trout in smaller eastern creeks? Assume yes just wondering if you would make any adjustments?
When you are using Amnesia and Maxima for the nymph leaders, what knot are you using from the Amnesia to say...the 12lb mid section?....is it a blood knot, or surgeon's?
I have listened and searched your leader videos but have not found a discussion on wet fly leaders. Is that because you do not typically fish wet flies? Thanks I have learned a tremendous amount.
@@lylefinger315 Wet fly leaders are either contact or non-contact. He has discussed at length actually. Feel free to call him or email him with any further questions. He’s always happy to help.
Hello! Great info here. I’m curious on the reasoning behind never using flouro except for a few inches of tippet material? I have various diameters of flouro at home I was going to use to build some deep water pike leaders, but now I am questioning their effectiveness.
in he video you did not mention what mono you use for the Nymph leader. You like Maxima Clear for the contact leader is that what you use or is it Ultragreen ? thanks again
Buy a set of digital calipers and scientifically measure the leader components!!! I know, everyone is against this idea. We are so precise with everything else in fly fishing, why not be able to measure the leader diameters? Thanks, I appreciate the video!!!
@@Madriveroutfitters correct, but when it’s time to add a new section or tippet, people seem to get confused. For beginners, I always recommend them purchasing a set of digital calipers so they can get use to seeing what a 4x looks like, just one example. Ok, no big deal, thanks.
Watched a lot of your vids, and the double haul is my favorite. However, how about a salt water leader; cold water for northerners and warm water for Florida or the Gulf, for us snow birds?
