Thanks so much for watching!
Hey Brian - I appreciate what you do on your channel to share your knowledge.
Thanks for watching. We appreciate you being here.
This was the video I been waiting for!!!!!
Thanks for watching!
Brian, You love what you do. Keep it up!
Thanks for being here and please stay tuned.
Thank You Sir for Another Awesome & Informative Video 🤙🏼
Thanks for being here.
I've been fishing small to medium sized streamers on a floating line and a sinking tip line for a few years. I tie the streamers myself, and use a 5wt for river small mouth here in Michigan.
Thanks for watching.
Which works better for big fish? Floating line streamer or sinking line streamer
@@samharrington181 I prefer a sinking line but big fish also rise to hit meals on the surface!
@Sam Harrington if your able to pick up a sink line it's worth it forsure, but if you only can choose one stick with a floating line buy some sinking poly leaders. For most of my applications I get by with my sinking polyleaders and floating line I usually use a extra fast sink airflow polyleader I only really crack out the full sink for fishing a lake out of a boat
@Chunder Shredder got 2 rods now, 9 wt with the fathom sinking line and 5 wt with the floating line, caught a beautiful Brookie yesterday on my birthday!
Another great video with leader information for smaller streamers. A must see.
Thanks for being here.
this channel is phenomenal. i have learned so much from ur informational videos. keep doing this for a long time please!
Best regards from sweden.
Thanks for being here. As long as folks keep supporting the shop, we'll keep making videos!!!
Agreed
ditto, but not from Sweden.
@@charlesmurray1220 Thanks to all.
When I started fly fishing a few years back, I sat at home and educated myself with many of his videos while sitting on the couch with a broken leg. I used that knowledge to become a pretty competitive fly fisherman. I never get skunked and impress the old timers at times. Mostly because of these videos and the recommended books.
Awesome channel! just started fly fishing and these videos have been super informative!
Thanks for being here and please stay tuned.
Mega Thx for such an Outstanding Video. Not only does it have tons of info for us new to fly fishing streamers, but most videos do not give such an excellent assortment of what flies that we can use in our presentations but you also help us select which smaller streamers that we can attempt to tie on own as we dabble in fly tying.
Thanks for watching.
Excellent and very informative as usual…
Thanks for being here.
You read my mind today! Thanks for the video! Look forward to more Q&A videos
And don’t forget the white board!!
Thanks for watching.
How fantastic this video came out the same day I cleaned house catching smallies on the Shenandoah River using crayfish patterns (Murray's Crayfish) on a 6 wt floating line. So much fun.
Also, I agree. Strip-Set is a must read. It took me back to the basics and helped me rediscover the joy in fishing with a basic streamer set-up.
Thanks for watching.
I enjoyed this, Brian. Well done. I like the idea of exploring streamers on rigs ranging from #5-#8. It's good to know the appropriate weight and size of fly, rods and lines.
Thanks for watching.
Great job on your videos, very educational...
Greetings from Santiago, Chile 🇨🇱
Thanks for being here.
Just tried using the 7.5’ leader and it made such a difference with my casting! Thanks!
Thanks for watching and happy to help. Stay tuned.
Great!!! Thank You so much for the excellent tutorial!!!
Thanks so much for watching!
Brian really appreciate your insights mate. More power to you from Down Under!
Thanks for being here.
Good info on the small streamers I can add to my fly box. Also good to see some Cortland products on the videos! Hopefully they are getting back in the game!
Thanks for watching.
Love this, thanks Brian
Appreciate you being here.
This video series is awesome. I really appreciate the time you put into them. As a newbie, I’m watching as many as I can and taking notes. I’ll continue buying from your shop now and into the future. I also called your staff before buying my first kit and they were super helpful. Thanks
Thanks for watching and thanks for the support!
I had a lot of fun last week catching fish on a 3 weight with a triple density F/H/I line and bead head wooly buggers, worked great. Worked well for swinging nymphs too.
Thanks for watching.
Great tutorial! Very informative!
Thanks for watching.
Good stuff Brian...Thanks!
Thanks for watching.
You definitely cleared up the leader length. I was ready to put a 4 foot leader on my floating line until I got a sink tip. I will try this formula as soon as I can.
Thanks for watching.
Yesssss I needed this
Appreciate you being here.
Man I must have missed this one, thank for some great information.
Thanks for watching.
Hey Brian, I've got to say thank you so much for this information because you are so spot on. Up here in Cherokee NC, Sylvia, Franklin, Bryson City, all the way down to Murphy and Andrew's I use the muddler minnow, black and red brown would buggers, and any white or grayish minnow colored streamers. All I can say is this info was like butter and I can't wait to use some of your favorite streamer flys.
I meant wolly buggers.
Thanks for watching. Let's go with Wooly Buggers?
Excelente, muy bueno y didactico !!! Abrazo, desde la Patagonia Argentina.
Thanks so much for watching.
what a really cool video so helpful
Thanks for watching. We really appreciate it.
Muddler Minnow for the Win! 🙌 I can't believe the first 3 you mentioned are flies I use! 🥳😎
Thanks for watching!
Nice & informative video Brian 👍. Totally agree on the size of fly patterns 🤘, most large ( Trophy size fish) . Grow to that size, is because. They consume large amounts of smaller food items, blood worms, caronamids, leeches, dapheena, the list is endless.
Thanks for watching.
Thank you for posting this video. I thought I was really handicapped having a 5/6 weight and floating line for smallmouth. I feel more confident I can target smallies with your prescribed setup.
Thanks for watching.
Mr Michael, what do we do? I have a 5 weight with 4x leader. Watched several times but I feel I'm missing something.
Now that I'm wanting to flycast for sea-run cutthroats in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and you're talking about books I'll need to re-read Fly Casting with Lefty Kreh.
I've had you running in the background while bumbling around the house, so i'll have to re-watch these videos again.
Thanks for being here.
Watching from Kentucky my friend,… good information

Thank you , great video

Keep it up BOyz ! I LOve the Channel
Thanks for watching (don't forget the girlz).

Awesome information, smaller streamers are the trick somedays,1 you might add to the mix is a # 10 Kreelex Minnow in black & olive have done quite well with it for local rainbows, keep up the great videos, tight lines & bent rods 🤟
Thanks for watching. So many flies, so little time.
Ialways wondered about Cortland Peach. I’ll check that out!
Thanks for watching.
So helpful. I 've been struggling to have a Micky finn swimming in the correct water column

I am glad you put this video out, you answered a lot of questions for me. Thanks 👍!!!
Glad to help. Thanks for watching.
Yes, yes you can. I have had great success with it.
Thanks for watching.
Bahahaha “A good leader starts in the butt” what a quote! Great video
Thanks for watching!
THANK YOU! (Slammers) I only have a floating fly line and struggle to fish a lot of streamers that are unweighted
Thanks for watching.
Split shot, tiny tiny ones spread before tippet
Or maybe try a sinking tip.
The duck tape, nice touch 👌
Thanks!
This is the best instructional fly fishing channel on you tube. Thank you Brian. This video is particularly helpful to me. I fly fish with a 6wt rod with a floating fly line. Two of my favorite stream/rivers have good populations of both smallmouth and good sized native brown trout so I have always wanted to try using streamers with my set up. My question: Would you use a tippet ring or micro swivel when building a leader as you described in the video and if so at what point in the leader would you put the tippet or micro swivel? Thanks again, Jim
Thanks for watching Jim! Please send your questions over to Brian at the shop via email or give him a call. He’ll be happy to help.
great tutorial .
Thanks for watching.
Great video! Very informational. Just to clarify when getting a leader for my floating fly line for streamers. I should go to a 0x.
Sounds about right! Thanks for watching and always feel free to call or e-mail the folks at the shop with any further questions.
I've fished streamers on floating line for years. The streams are moving pretty quick here in southern oregon yet shallow at the places I fish. Short leader heavy fly usually produces pretty well. Key word is usually..
Thanks for watching.
I run 7-9 ft leaders on 4wt floating line with a size 14 or 12 wooly bugger. Works like a charm
Thanks for watching!
I fish a lot of frog and crawfish patterns. I think the floating line helps make it act like it should.
Thanks for watching.
I've used streamers with floating line and normal leader forever. Worked fine for me for largemouth bass and trout.
Great to hear and thanks for watching.
Love this channel lots of great info. I have a question I am new to fishing with nymphs. Can you do a video on tips on how to use indicators and nymph fishing tips for trout. Jeremy Stiles, NC
Thanks for watching. Please send your requests over to Brian at the shop via e-mail and he will respond there.
My favorite streamer is a dubbed body with about an inch of of zonker fur attached just behind a bead head. Works great on wide variety of species.
Thanks for watching and thanks for sharing.
I get this is mostly aimed at trout river fishing but for coastal seatrout (the brown trout version, not the usa saltwater variant) we almost always use a floating line and at least 9ft leader, most of the time more like 10 to15ft and reasonably small streamers, nymphs an shrimp patterns that also don't weigh much, or have just a little bit of weight added. When there is a lot of wind and waves or some deeper water, maybe a intermediate line is used at most. It works and is a ton of fun, seeing the bow wave of a hungry trout plowing after your fly, or just get that hard take out of nowhere.
Thanks for watching.
I’ve thrown joes fly short strikers and rooster tails with a 5wt fly rod. It works. Use a small split shot on the knot holding the lure.
Thanks for watching.
You have me hooked on howler bros.. my wife thanks you .. 😂😂😂
We are all hooked on howler bros! Easy to do!
Thanks Brian! Another great video. I’m new to fly fishing. My Redington Trout field kit just arrived today. Thanks for your great review on that as well.
My question is regarding the leader for streamers on float line. The tippet you used in the video was .010” or 1x . So my fly size would need to be 5 or 6? If I had a streamer that was smaller do I only need to change the size of the tippet section ?
Thanks for watching and thanks for the support. Please send this question directly to Brian at the shop and he will get back to you there. Send him an e-mail or give him a call and he'll be happy to help/answer.
In Silver Creek Idaho I throw a lot of small unweighted leaches on 4X with leaders up to 14 feet on clear days. On cloudy days with chop I will go to 9 foot 3 or 2x
Thanks for sharing.
I do believe there's a T- shirt or a sticker idea in this video it might be a bit inappropriate I don't know it doesn't bother me . "A good leader always starts in the but." I see a fly line rolling out perfectly and then the saying. I think its a winner. Lol love what you do keep them coming.
Stay tuned....it's in the works.
@@Madriveroutfitters nice
I would buy this shirt in short sleeve and in a wicking long sleeve. Probably a sticker as well.
🤦♂️😂🤣 thanks for the laugh!
You might have to start your own line of clothing 😁
Fly fishing is a very niche sport in my country, and good information is extremely hard to come by, for a beginner like me.
That's why RUclips channels like this one are like gold, to me.
Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge and experience.
Thanks for being here!
Wooly Buggers ,Wooly worms, and Black nose Dace all work well for me on a 5 weight. 7.5 foot leader
Thanks for watching!!!
Correct me if I’m wrong but I feel like large heavy streamers on floating line is the way to go you have really good feel on the takes and it sinks deep no split shot needed
Pretty sure he'd tell you he prefers to fish large heavy streamers on sink tip lines. Quite a few videos recently where he talks about that exact subject. Feel free to call him at the shop though to discuss. He's always happy to chat. Thanks.
I loved this video, so informative. When buying Maxima leader material, I accidentally bought the Chameleon instead of the clear, will that cause any issues? I'm fishing for bass and panfish.
Feel free to contact Brian directly through the shop via e-mail or phone and he'll be happy to help and answer your questions. Thanks.
Mad river outfitters is the best flyshop in the world
Thanks so much!
11:45 I spit out my water. That zoom in was perfect!
Happy to help! Thanks for watching.
I've fished streamers or lures as we call them in the UK, on floating lines for years. But we use smaller flies for Trout here.
Try some bigger ones!
Ireland is same they wont look at them.small flies here is way to go
No stocked rivers here.all natural wild trout.real beautiful brown trout.
Great video for anglers like me! Thank you Madriver outfitters!
Thanks for watching.
i have to say the gray or the black ghost are some of my go to streamers
As they should be! Thanks for watching.
Great Video
I just bought a 4 wt rod and i wanted to cast a smaller weighted leach and everytime the line unrolled it didnt feel good. But i randomly casted it like i would throw a Lasso and it felt just like Butter. But i dont know the Name of the cast to some tips. And another question why don’t you carry guideline fly fish in the shop
Thanks for watching. Please send your questions over to the shop via e-mail or give them a call. They will be happy to help/answer.
Would you add a micro swivel? If so, where would you place the swivel? Between the last section and the tippet? I build my own leaders for sinking fly line and streamers using your previously posted recipe and it works very well.
Please send your questions over to Brian directly via e-mail or give him a call. He'll be happy to help and answer your questions. Thanks.
Ive pretty much only thrown streamers on floating lines or sink tip lines, in fresh water for bass/pike and trout, or salt water fishing the Puget Sound for cutthroat and salmon.
Ive tried sinking lines, and I dont seem to like them as much, and only use them when I absolutely have to. The standard floating line is really versatile stuff.
Thanks for watching.
At 71 my memory may be squirrelly but being new to fly fishing, and fishing in general for that matter, I feel like I’m sitting in my first year Spanish Class. I’m smiling at my pretty teacher and nodding while being totally clueless but fascinated. No, you’re not what I would call a “Pretty teacher” but you definitely hold my interest and make me smile. With any luck one of these days I’ll be a second year Spanish student and have a clue. Lol
Thank you so much for your videos. They are both entertaining and educational. No, they are not “Rocket Science” but definitely educational! 😂👍🏻
Wes
Thanks for watching.
Hi Brian,
I have watched many of your videos regarding leaders , Et Al.
Good stuuff, (thanks) I got it. Now how to set depth to tick the bottom or say you want to be a little higher in the water column?
Could you use your white board and discuss how to set the split shots and indicator placement for proper depth for contact, as well as non contcct?
Regards,
-Eric
Thanks for watching. Please send your questions directly to Brian at the shop via e-mail or give him a call. He’ll be happy to help!
Will my standard 5 weight forward fly line work so I do not have to buy a separate fly line? Thanks for all your videos.
Check the video again at 3:40 and he answers this question. Thanks and always feel free to contact the shop with any further questions.
It's not rocket surgery!! :) (but my head still hurts! LOL) Just started fly fishing this year, but have been watching HOURS of Brian videos...they are great, eventhough a lot goes over my head. Trying to build a starter kit of flies...but, it seems every video has new/different favorite/best flies. Should my starter kit have 100+ flies in it!? LOL
Thanks for watching. Feel free to call the shop with any and all questions. They are always happy to help.
Much of everything we think we need to know (or have) is geekery, as with any topic if you dive deep enough into it. And i think the different fields of fishery cant be fully mastered in a lifetime, even if we tried.
But that doesnt mean you cant get great results fast, even with modest equipment, and some research.
The journey is the goal anyway, not the destination - so, start with the basics, instincts will show you the way and develop with practice.
Expert-Lingo and techniques can be a bit overwhelming, as with most things worth learning - but today we can take shortcuts by using videos like this, saving us years of progress in short order. That is great.
As i said, just start with the basics. The rest will follow.
Enjoy the ride !
Earned a sub from me, because I clearly know nothing about fly fishing
Thanks for being a part of it. Feel free to contact the shop anytime with questions.
can you put a perfection loop in your homemade leader much like a commercial leader has, to help reduce the cost of buying different leaders for the different types or styles of fishing.
You can tie a perfection loop wherever you like:

Is you book, the fly fishing guide to the Mad River available from Mad River Outfitters?

Any advice on how heavy of split shot to use? Thanks!

Hey Brian, you mentioned Maxima clear as another option to the cortland- could you use maxima ultra green instead of maxima clear? I ask because I just went out and bought every diameter of MUG to build my own nymph and streamer leaders using tippet rings and micro swivels for my 5 wt rod based on another video you did 6 months ago. In that video, you were showing how to build 4’ leaders for sinking tip lines. I have decided to just stick to smaller streamer flies on floating line for my 4 wt and 5 wt rods so want to build these longer leaders now. BTW, these leaders have more sections than the sinking tip leaders, where would I attach the micro swivel or tippet ring on these?
Please send your questions over to Brian at the shop directly via e-mail or give him a call and he'll be happy to help. Information on contacting him is in the description of this video. Thanks and he'll be happy to hear from you and glad to assist.
Thinking out of the box here. Can you or have you ever used a lure on a fly rod ,re: spoons or jigs, for fish other than trout ?.
Thanks for watching. Feel free to contact Brian directly with your questions and he’ll be happy to help. Shoot him an email or give him a call.
I really want one of those stickers but it comes out to over $10 with shipping, might have to wait until I need something else too or is there a way around that?
Feel free to contact the shop directly and they may be able to help?
Do you guys fish for shad ? I use a dry line for them as well! 7 feet deep or less.
You'd have to check with Brian and the folks at the shop directly. We don't have that answer for you here. Feel free to e-mail him or call him direct. He's always happy to chat. Thanks for watching.
Amazing video! I have a question, how do I estabilish the butt section diameter for a 7 weight line? Appreciated your help, great chanel !
Thanks for watching. Feel free to call or e-mail Brian at the shop and he'll be happy to help!
Brian, what do you recommend for 8wt or 6wt butt section diameter. I throw 2 1/2 to 4 inch streamers, on hooks or tubes. For Bass and trout.
Thanks for watching. Please send your questions over to Brian directly through the shop. You can e-mail him or give him a call and he'll be happy to help. He works full time in the shop.
After you attach your butt section are you using blood knots to attach the other sections to the butt?
Sorry but Brian does not monitor the comments here. You can e-mail him or call him and he'll be happy to help/answer. Thanks!
The answer to my question.
Thanks for watching. Happy to help!
What is considered, big heavy weighted flies? I throw anything from a 12 dry fly, to a beadhead, to 1/0 clousers. I have a a 5wt and a 8wt fly rods. I love throwing small streamers though. The rivers i fish range from 5" deep to 5 ' holes it, the depth is definitely wide ranged and anything from smallmouth to walleye run in it.
Thanks for watching.
I didn't hear anything about the Clouser Minnow. Do you not recommend these? Thanks!
Please reach out to Brian directly through the shop via email or phone with your questions. He’ll be happy to help and answer.
I swing small to large steamers on rio big nasty floating line. If I need depth I add length and split shot

How about MOW tips. Would you remove the loop and snell on the butt section?
That is a question for the shop. Please send them an e-mail or give them a call and they can help. Thanks!!!
Wouldn't you want flouro leader and tippet since it sinks faster than mono?
