You seem like such a down to Earth, great guy. I've learned a lot from watching your videos/tutorials. I caught my first Big SH a few months ago on the fly and it was one of the best moments in my life. Such a great feeling! Thanks for all the awesome information and helpful tips. I hope only great things for you moving forward.
Crazy how different a Great Lake steelheader's bag is compared to coastal! Looks more like my trout bag. Would love to get inland one day and see what it's like out there. Thanks for the video!
some areas are very trout like for sure. Where I live in the GL we have large rivers where I bet you'd be more at home with two handed rods and skagit heads being the norm.
Completely agree with budget gear being effective. I believe I payed around $100 for a 9’ 3 wt rod reel and line combo just to have a super light rod for panfish and it’s just been working well for me. Don’t get much trout fishing done out here, but it’s worked great for panfish and probably have gotten around 1,000 or so bluegill and crappie on it since I got it. I’m sure a more expensive rod would work better, but I simply don’t have the money for a $250 rod and a $60 reel and $60 flyline, and I think a lot of people are in the same position as me. Never stopped me from getting out there and catching fish though.
Always great videos. I'd really love it if you'd do one specifically about fishing/swinging soft hackles. For steelhead and for trout.....Leaders.... All that jazz.
@@Madriveroutfitters that's great news.... I've been shopping around for books about fishing soft hackles... Also I always feel like my leader game is weak sauce. You do a good job of explaining leaders....I keep a leader journal, and try to make them ahead of time....because my memory doesn't get any better every year on my birthday. I have anticipated your "end of the line" book for some time now. I hope we get to see that soon too 😉
as far as cheap rods go, I have rods from 2 all the way to 10 wt and have never paid more than $100 for a rod. Cast before you buy if possible, if not then scour the internet for reviews or ask around. A lot of times you can get some dang good rods for dang good prices!
Wish you would have done this a month ago. Clearly California on the American River is well ahead of Ohio. But this info should help for the remainder of our steelhead season. Great content and detail on what works in Ohio and some that should work anywhere. Ps love your videos and have purchased product from your store online it's been spot on.
Thanks for watching and thanks for the support. He actually DID this back in the nineties. See the series "Steelheading Made Simple" that he mentions here. Same stuff.....20 years later.
I live in the PNW on the west side of the cascades and I’ve been steelheading for over a year now on spey rods and I’ve caught a grand total of zero. I’m going to try high sticking for them. I catch a ton of trout using that method so it stands to reason that I should do this method for PNW steelhead as well despite all the cool kids swinging.
Thanks for watching. Please send any and all questions directly to Brian or the folks at the shop. You can e-mail them or call them. They do not monitor comments here but of course work in the shop every day! Thanks.
Question on your Leader section. The leader seems relatively close to the rio euro nymphing leader. Starts a 0x-2x for 11 feet then a trout tippet ring. Would this work as a decent substitute for a steelhead leader? Thanks for all your great videos. You guys have taught me so much!
Thanks for watching. Please send your questions directly to Brian at the shop and he’ll be happy to help. You can email him or give him a call. He doesn’t come around here much but he’s in the shop 6 days a week!
Hey Brian, love the videos. I have a versa tip attached to the end of my #7 weight fly line, would you use the same formula as a sink tip. Thanks Wayne.
I’m confused about the leader being composed of all the different types of line. What’s the difference between that and having a leader that is all just one piece that’s tapered?
Basically you can buy them (knotless) or tie them (knotted with different pieces). Feel free to call or e-mail the folks at the shop if any other questions or to discuss further.
@@Madriveroutfitters right, I was meaning that 4x in Cortland has an 8.5 lb breaking strength. Both at .007 but to get 8.5 lb in SA we would have to go up to 3x at .008 diameter. My point being I get greater performance out of cortland in strength and in a smaller diameter.
Thanks for the vid. Fishing for Lake Ontario lake run trout, I often have to use 3x and even 4x due to low clear water. How you you think this formula would work if my tippet section to the ring was that small? Any adjustments recommended?
As far as Nymphing from a boat goes, yes it does, but the topography and terrain of our rivers are just different, and the gear adjusts accordingly, most of us also swing at this point because if there’s no fish to catch anyways I may as well have fun casting a Spey rod all day.
Hi Brian, I was looking to pick up a Redington Path combo on sale at a local store. The only length/wt available is the 9ft. 8wt. I've been researching and most people say it's important for the length rod to be 9.5 to 10 ft. for more comfortable casting, and easier time mending the line. Is the length important here?
Ok, now that I’ve finished the video, I have no excuses not to start nymphing for steelhead. Well... you forgot to suggest waders and shoes 😂 Just kidding, thank you for sharing your expertise, it’s steelhead time!
When you say high stick you mean euro nymphing technich? Cause seems to me that for euronymphing technic most people use 2 and 3 weight fly rod . Can you clarify and thanks for the information.
No, it does not necessarily mean euro. High-sticking usually refers to an indicator technique. Feel free to contact Brain at the shop for further clarification. Thanks.
Crazy watching fly fishing shops in the United States..in Norway we have to settle for the most part with “sporting good stores “ with maybe half a shelf dedicated to fly fishing and they’re still trying to sell the neoprene waders that’s been hanging on the wall for the last 15 year’s
