Regarding rods: I highly recommend streamer specific rods. With "normal" trout or salt water rods it´s no fun throwing heavy sink tips and full sinking lines. Streamer rods have a slower taper so the whole blank loads up. Not only the upper section of the rod. And they are shorter. Around 8´8". That means less swing weight and easier casting.

    Another cool video!
Down here in NZ I use a 7 or 8 weight rod when streaming as the fish tend to be bit larger and more grunty than their overseas cuzzies especially during the winter rainbow trout runs in the central north island.
It also helps to land them quicker so is more humane when practicing catch and release.
Love the vids keep up the great work.

Off the subject some, but I bass fish and you mentioned that. I always consider the fly first. If I'm throwing a crawfish for example, in the summer I may use a floating line to lift it off the bottom and skitter like they do, same with a shrimp. If it is winter, I may use full sink and drag the bottom with it like it is slowly crawling. Point is, no matter what you throw make sure the line and the fly match the natural action of the animal you are imitating.

    Hi Dan,
Really like your explanation on how to read the environment you are choosing to fish in.
I spend a lot time in small shallow creeks and wider deeper faster running larger creeks.
The 5 works well most of the time. However I have found the 3 seems to work very well with floating line in the shallow narrow creeks. Even when I know the fish are in deep holes.
Just fishing in north central Pa. Beautiful rugged mountain streams & creeks

Thank you, glad to have helped. I have used my three on small creeks myself. Hope you got into some fish in PA!

Just got home from an afternoon on a local river. Wish I saw this before I went out. Didn’t loose any streamers but was using 5x on my 9’ 5wt. I was struggling to get it to turn over. Lots of slams and splashes. Still super fun. I’m new to fly fishing, couple months, now I’m armed with some good streamer knowledge for tomorrow. Love the content, keep it up!!!

Hey dan if I'm using a floating line do I need to worry about using a sinking leader? or will the streamer just sink on its own

Another great video. Do you find your Lamson remix better and more durable than the liquid?

    • @FlyFishDan
      @FlyFishDan  7 месяцев назад

Thanks! The Liquid has been a good reel, but the Remix is just much better. More solid, better looking and great drag system.

fluoro="low stretch" well it doesn't stretch AS QUICKLY as nylon mono. Plus almost all fly lines are stretchy as hell. You feel this when you grab 4 or 5 foot sections to "stretch" out the reel memory before fishing. Why nobody ever mentions this is beyond me. If you've got a nine-ish foot less stretchy leader and you're setting the hook with 40 feet of fly line out plus nine feet of line on the rod, you're setting a giant rubber band. Keeping your hooks very sharp is way more important than the amount of stretch between fluoro and nylon leaders.

FFD, you still don't sound as good as AI Morgan Freeman. Hope that you get your voice completely back soon. Interesting how we all approach fly fishing just a little differently - but these differences probably don't amount to much. What's your go-to for casting streamers with a Spey rod? Mine is my 11' 4wt. and I use it all winter (normally), unless I'm on small water and not swinging. Thanks for another great video 🎣🐟🐟🙃. ☮ from Idaho.

Thanks Justal - it's been a rough few weeks for sure! I use an 11' 3/4 trout spey...still need a lot of work on the cast!
