- In this video, Brian Flechsig from Mad River Outfitters and Kelly Galloup from @TheSlideinn discuss why and when you would use a 6wt streamer rod when fly fishing. Often, folks will shy away from a 6wt, when it might actually be an ideal wt for streamer fishing!

It is interesting to see that people who do understand the physics of fly casting come up with the very logical proposal of overlining a rod to cast heavy streamers in particular when casting smaller distances. Thanks for the video and guiding fly fishers to make the right tackle decision. In the European Alps we fish smaller streamers on 5-weights using 6-weight lines (from Kelly of course)
Thanks for being here.
Very cool! SA sure keep coming out with awesome stuff!
Thanks for watching.
I started fly fishing with a 6wt and to this day it’s still my favorite rod size to use!
Thanks for watching.
Arguably the most versatile. People will say a 5wt but good luck throwing big streamers, but a good 6wt can throw pretty light dries all the way up to meaty streamers. I love my 6!
Excellent video. Enjoyed and learned.
Thanks for watching!
Always learning from your channel- I’ll be trying out these methods on my next fishing trip.
Thanks for being here!
We all know Brian stayed in the back because he wanted a good view of Kelly’s form...
Another great video. As someone who’s done almost no fly fishing but has always been fascinated, you guys produce seriously valuable content.
Actually not....the heater was in the front.
Getting ready to try my first year fly fishing for trout here in southeast PA and I owe you a great deal for the education provided through this channel. Right now using all budget gear from local generic shops. Looking forward to the day when I can step-up to a nice rod and reel outfit and I know I'll be shopping your store when I do. Thanks again, Alec.
Thanks for watching and thanks for the support.
Thank you Brian. I have been wrestling with using a six weight or seven weight for my smallmouth fishing. I love the six weight. Thanks for all the videos.
Thanks for being here!
Great video Brian! I have been fishing the Niagara River (boat) with the StreamerX 8wt and 7wt with the Airflo Streamer Max Long for a year now. Both 250 and 300 grain lines get in the strike zone quick and are effortless to cast with the action of this rod. Thank you for all the insight and great content in your videos. Looks like it’s time to add the StreamerX 6wt to my quiver. Cheers.
Thanks for watching and we'll of course be happy to help with that!
The new Echo 84-B is a sweet rod. Super light. I am throwing big poppers and streamers on the 7wt. Rear back and fire! Can’t wait for bass season. Thanks for another informative video Brian!
The entire staff is in love with this rod! Thanks for watching.
I have been running a 6wt with sink tip for years now. It started because I was new and had a 6wt, it's continued because I LOVE it.
Thanks for watching.
Oh man. I just got my set up yesterday I wish this video was out a week ago before I ordered my 7wt
Thanks for watching.
@@Madriveroutfitters absolutely thank you guys for making awesome content.
what happened to TFO thought they were your fav....Ughhh now I have to go buy an Echo :)
Thanks always love you vid's...
Thanks for watching. We don't discriminate around here. A good rod is a good rod, no matter who makes it.
Brian, the hair looks fabulous! Thanks for the videos!
Thanks....he'll appreciate that. Always worried about the hair.
I started fly fishing a 6 weight. My go to for a long time was a 4wt and recently got another 6. Ironically I don't own, nor ever have owned a 5 wt. I guess if your In dedicated trout country it makes sense but for mostly warm water with the occasional trout trip the 6 is more rounded.
Thanks for being here.
Brian/MRO Team does this same mentality apply to the 84B? Just picked up the 84B 6wt from you guys. I only wade Darby creek, Clear fork, and other similar streams locally for smallies. Should I pickup a 7wt as well? Hahahahaha😂 I love this 84B 6wt tho! Just casting bass flies into a pond it’s simply amazing. I think I’ll
Be super happy with the 6. Thanks for all you guys do. I’ve only been into the shop twice now and was greeted by name my second time last week. Amazing people!
Thanks for watching. Please contact the folks at the shop directly with your questions and they will be happy to help. You can email them or call them. They do not monitor the comments here but of course do monitor the shop!
been a tfo guy but i may add this to my rods, use a 5wt BVK TFO but this might be added in near future.
Thanks for watching and let us know if any questions.
6wt rods are the ultimate wading anglers streamer rod as said by Kelly Galloup himself.
As a wade angler 99% of the time, it's my go to for sure.
What could possibly go wrong?
@@Madriveroutfitters Hook a pike when smallmouth fishing, have it go crazy and break the rod tip. Throw a tight loop with a sculpin helmet fly and crack the rod, have the reel fall of the reel seat into the water......if it COULD happen, it's happened to me
What is the yellow reel handle knob? How does it help? Maybe protect you fingers on a hot run fish?

I wonder how the Hi VS flip line would handle with a 5’ versaleader🎣
Feel free to call or e-mail Brian at the shop with any questions. He knows that line....for sure. Thanks.
Brian, Curious how the 84b compares to the Axiom II for a 6wt for articulated trout streamers mostly
Thanks for watching. Please send any and all questions directly to Brian at the shop and he'll respond there. You can e-mail him or call him. He does not monitor the comments here...but of course works in the shop every day!
The only problem I have is the delivery of a dry fly on a 6 weight. Is it the line I'm using or just me?
Thanks for watching. Feel free to contact the folks at the shop with your questions and they will be happy to help. You can e-mail them or call them.
Perfect example of right tool for the right job.
Thanks for watching.
I’m buying an 8WT for targeting big brown trout with streamers. Might be overkill but idk lol.
Call the shop if you have any questions!
What was the new model of scientific anglers line with the 5 ft head?
Link in the video description. It's called the Titan Sink Tip Mini.
Thanks for being here.
@@Madriveroutfitters Thank you very mutch... have a nice Start of the week.... see you…. Greetings Jörg
I have a TFO rod that says 5/6 weight. Do I only need to change out the line to 6 weight and I am good to go for streamers?
Thanks for watching. Please contact the folks at the shop directly with any and all questions. You can e-mail them or call them and they are always happy to help. That's what they do!!
In dk the 6 wt is the most common
Thanks for being here.
bros got guts... the respectable kind.
Thanks for being here.
I use a 5wt because I’m too cheap to buy a dedicated streamer rod
Thanks for watching.
Appreciate you being here as always.
