Incredible tutorial - calming and reassuring, Mr. Rogers could do no better and that's meant as a compliment. Watch this after a stressful day at work (super stressful day, add some bourbon) and you will be totally calm and relaxed at the end.
EXCELLENT! One of the very few of these guys who sticks to the point. (No waste of time listening to him bask in the sound of his own voice.) It would have been better if he gave some advice about How Much backing and Line to use.
You should always test the kind of glue that you're planning to use on an old piece of line both of monofilament and the fly line and the backing to make sure that the glue does not melt any of the fishing lines as this will weaken the rig and cause a break off
I am very interested in flyfishing. I’m going to invest in my first flyfishing rod and reel You are a great teacher. You are making it easier for me to get interested thank you.
Well done! As a newbie, I have had various people show me how to load my reel. By far, this is the best! teaching! I like the hints along the way, in addition to the specific details and demonstrations. Very much appreciated this video!
DH Being a jackass doesn’t make you look better or smarter. First negative comment I seen. For new fly fishing anglers this is a excellent tutorial but most people can spot a jerk without one.
I watched a few of these types of walk through when I took up fly fishing again. I used this when re rigging. Very useful info without anything unnecessary. Nice calm instruction that works well when you need to rewatch a few times while working through it. Thanks for the good work!
This was a great tutorial! I am taking by brother and son out fly fishing for the first time and needed to re-string two reels, this video gave me the confidence to do it. Thank you so much!!!!!!!
Thank you for the informative video I just got my first fly rod for my 21st bday. And was dumbfounded on what to do and how to get started. I'll be trying this out.
You did a great job with this video. Very clear and easy to understand the steps. Attached backing, fly line and leader to my new reel for the first time without a hitch! Thank you!
I like the nail knot better; I have been told it can strip the outer jacket of the fly line and come off. Personally, I have never experienced this issue, then again, I have never had a problem with a welded loop binding either. I also use a bit of UV glue on the nail knot, makes it even smoother.
New Subscriber here , your videos and tutorials are extremely helpful and I've watched a ton of similar vids all over RUclips and I can say without a doubt that you Sir probably have the best, detailed, in depth and overall most helpful videos out there !!! Thank You !!!
guys i have a knot that is simpler that requires no stiffner no peice of tippet and just your fingers and it takes just a couple seconds to do when you learned it well i discovered thos knot on my own when i was a beginer and ive used it now for 4 years and it has always been a good knot for me ill try to do a video to show you guys how to do it in not too long
Thanks for cutting off the loops ! Fly fishers should unit at fly fishing is not to be rushed . Learn the important knots . Needle and nail knots are easy with a bit of practice . If your in such a rush to hit the water ……. Maybe give spin cast / bait casting a try .
Thanks for the great tutorial video, it was very helpful and educational for me and my young son to actually follow and understand with ease.. great job sir thank you.
Thank you for having a perfect, detailed instructions on how to do this. Especially the knotting. I have just started getting in to fly fishing and having this video was extremely helpfuly in getting my reel set up. Now i wait for the rod!
That is one of top informative videos I have ever seen.. Congrats on that. I hope you skills as a fly fisher are also top notch ! Thanks so much ! 😎🇦🇺🇦🇺👍👍🤘🤘
You need - oh well hi - now anyway - I would need backing on every reel. I have fought a lot of big fish - well salmon everywhere - and YOU NEED THE BACKING TO LET THE FISH TIRE OUT BEFORE YOU BRING THEM IN. There is stretch in the line so they can keep from tearing their mouth. But this video is awesome now. : )
Oh - the backing should float so it doesn't tangle on the ground and bottom rocks. That's great. Oh - well that's only a issue if you loose the fish. Well it's just fun to think about fishing. Well what I'm saying is our line stays tight on the whole retrieve and it doesn't just hang out there. But what if there's a problem? Oh - hey it just remembered. It's our long casts that go errant. Great. Thanks. Bye now. : )
One of your Subscribers Bobby Garmon asked you a VERY good question. Would you mind responding to his question. There are amateurs like us who are will to learn. Thank you.
thanks for makeing this when i attach my fly line and start fly fishing i will watch this and follow along because this is really helpful. or mabey my grandpa will show me lol. but for real this is really helpful
What I do is, I feed the end of the leader through one of the holes of the spool, and that way I don't need to fiddle around to find the end of the leader. Because if you just leave it hanging out of the reel, and the spool turns in transport, then you end up with the end of the leader again sticking to the fly line.
Thanks! I got a fly rod for my 15th birthday today and this helped out a lot!
Been fly fishing for ~20 years and I learned a lot from this. Excellent video and great explanations!
Incredible tutorial - calming and reassuring, Mr. Rogers could do no better and that's meant as a compliment. Watch this after a stressful day at work (super stressful day, add some bourbon) and you will be totally calm and relaxed at the end.

Never fly fish before and was giving an old rod and reel this video saved me alot of hassle thank you sir
For my nail knots, I always put on some kind of glue to strengthen the knot and help it run through the guides smother. It really helps me!
You should always test the kind of glue that you're planning to use on an old piece of line both of monofilament and the fly line and the backing to make sure that the glue does not melt any of the fishing lines as this will weaken the rig and cause a break off
I prefer a small dab of epoxy

DH Being a jackass doesn’t make you look better or smarter. First negative comment I seen. For new fly fishing anglers this is a excellent tutorial but most people can spot a jerk without one.
For a start a nail knot isnt required to attach the fly line to backing -overly complicated.
Thank you for the super clear backing knot explanation. I had to back with mono before the backing to stop the backing from slipping around! .....
Easiest instructions I have seen yet. Thanks for posting.
Thank you, very helpful. I have not used my fly rod in many years and needed a refresher. Yours was great!
Awesome job on this video... No other tutorial was this clear and easy to understand. Now fly fishing doesn't seem so intimidating anymore...

Great video! I know what I'm about to share is not liked from a lot of fly fishermen. I really also like using the automatic reel.
I like the nail knot better; I have been told it can strip the outer jacket of the fly line and come off. Personally, I have never experienced this issue, then again, I have never had a problem with a welded loop binding either. I also use a bit of UV glue on the nail knot, makes it even smoother.

The arbor knot he tied sucks.

This was a great video for a beginner. Awesome job!
Excellent. So clear and well paced. :-)
You forgot to mention to make sure your backing and fly line go on evenly very important
I like to use a old empty tube out of a ink pen it acts as a stiffener and you can feed the tag end through pull it out and pull down the knot
Kind of reminded me of Bob Ross-great job.
Seems like a lot of work, glad I watch this before getting into fly fishing
Great tips. Great video. Thank you for sharing.
One of your Subscribers Bobby Garmon asked you a VERY good question. Would you mind responding to his question. There are amateurs like us who are will to learn. Thank you.

Great video! Thank you! Is there a general rule of thumb for how much backing to use?
About to start fly fishing for reds. Great video very instructive
Excellent - thanks for doing this!
great video! just bought a rod, about to get a reel. I would've been scratching my head for awhile!

Superb tutorial, thank you very much.
I have no experience fly fishing and this is a great tutorial. But my first question is how much backing should be on the reel?
Good question. Maybe and hopefully he will respond.
100yards
@@ryanbooth3259 You Have Got to be Kidding.....100 yards?
100 to 300 yds
Most of the time 100 300 is mainly for saltwater
Make sure if you have a center spool groove as this one does - you get the backing into it before starting to reel!!
