Used this method to setup my new 8wt. I used my shop vise with a bolt and washer to hold the fly and backing spools. Using the drill to pull the line off the reel was super easy. Awesome method. Thanks!
This is excellent. Good information delivered without a lot of yackety-yack.
Absolutely fantastic method so simple but by far the best way to spool any fly reel i stripped my 4 reels down and spooled all new backing and line to them all this method works absolutely perfectly every time thank you so much i subscribed
Thank you for this. Brand new to fly fishing. Excellent video for me showing how to put backing and fly line on a reel and how to attach them.
This is genius! Thank you for sharing, I'm definitely going to start using this method! It's the worst not having a proportionate amount of line/ backing on a reel.
This is awesome… haha that drill trick is great!
5:20 bookmarked because i just did this the wrong way. great video.
thanks for the video. Even though I only used the drill with the plastic spool step, the process was pretty quick and easy. Plus I got the right amount of backing on my reel the first time I ever setup a new fly reel.
Surprised how long it took for you make such an essential video. As always, these how to videos are well done along with some great expertise / pro-tips behind it. Great video!
Best explanation and visual for me. The tape idea perfect, I have a roll of blue tape in front of me now.
Very nice, you make some of the best fly fishing videos ,thanks!
Great info - well done and just in time for new reel ordered today! Thanks!
Thanks for this video! So much helpful information. I like to sit with a glass of wine and wind my lines by hand. Very meditative.
I see you post on other videos. You must be a fly fisher. Do you fish much? I just started fly.
@@onemorething100 Yes, sorry I missed your reply. I do fly fish. I've been doing it for 7 seasons now and I love it. I am a member of the Ottawa Fly Fishing Society. How are you enjoying fishing on the fly?
@@nicolelewis1828 Started last year and it's been a wonderful Obsession. Thank You.
@@onemorething100 Where do you fish?
@@nicolelewis1828 Pennsylvania. How about you?
WOW !!! Awesome video !! You should sell that cup kit ! I have multiple brand fly reels ( and cordless drills, LOL ) and this video made my YEAR ! This is one great video in every way!
Thanks!
Wow, that is so simple and I never thought of it 😁 thanks for sharing this technique
Great video I've watched so my spooling videos but everyone does it differently
That method looks so easy, thanks!
Excellent tutorial, I do a very similar method on my spinning reels, I join the backing to the topshot and wind it onto an empty spool, and then onto a second empty spool and then onto the reel, always a perfect amount.
Ive been doing this for years, I never thought about using a drill though, that's a great idea
Nice idea about Cup. I did not think about that cup. I use drill and different diameter of nuts to fit different spool and had Japanese made spool adapter to wind the thread with tension. You learn something everyday
Fantastic video, will definitely use this method! Cheers!
Thank you for this video
I've never been fly fishing but I'm going to start this spring. I know absolutely nothing about it and this explained a lot to me. Thank you SO much!
Ralph, I haven't been out for years so I took a class for beginners to prepare you to be out fishing on your own and it was great. Highly recommended if you can find it. Check out Trout Unlimited. Fantastic organization and you'll receive a heads up on Fly Fishing clubs, groups, and other events. They also sell a small selection of high quality gear and are affiliated with the best of the Fly Fishing businesses.
This is so helpful. Thanks!
Super helpful tips as usual. Thanks.
During coronavirus lockdown, I have enough time on my hands to just reel it manually 😉
Great job Sir. very informative
06:12 is genius...Thank you
Great video!
Great idea !!!!
Very nice ,thanks!
Wow great vid thanks
thanks great vid Kudos
Great video bruh! I had the same thought with reversing the order and putting on the reel and you confimred it! Brilliant minds think alike. Great idea with the drill and all the accessories man. Thank you!
I spot the winner of the 5wt reel shootout 👀
Nice tricks 😁😁😁👍
CAN i just use braided line for the backing
Genius
Ya! I have a Galvan T-8
This is a good one. Good job.
Let ‘er rip.
What guy doesn't have a hand drill????
Yup. What they all said. Lp
That's a pretty easy way to measure out your backing.
Damn. I thought I invented this! Lol.
Why are there 3 different color lines on that reel?
What I learned from this is to just buy it with line on it
Does the fly line have loops on both sides just curious
Hunter Cano , it really depends on the manufacturer. I have just purchased a Greys platinum stealth line which has no loops either end, they do however supply 2 braided loops for you to fit. Being really new to fly fishing I’m so thankful for all the information and instructional videos available on RUclips! Hope that helps. Regards Clive from Dorset UK.
Can I use 40lb braid for backing?
Yes you can but it is very thin and tough on hands when reeling in. Dacron is larger in diameter, softer and definitely more friendly on the hands.
@@tightlinevideo okay. Thanks for your input
@@Wyatt_Olson Dacron will rot over time and must be replaced. Because it is more expensive than monofilament, it can get expensive. To get the most life out of your Dacron line, rinse your reel in tap water when you get home and make sure you let it dry thoroughly before putting it away.
Dacron is also susceptible to what is referred to as "braid bite" or sinking into itself. If not wound tight, the Dacron will sink into itself on the reel and cause your reel to lock up. This makes the drag ineffective and puts a lot of pressure on your line. The end result is usually the line breaking.
Another disadvantage to Dacron is that many anglers complain that it is difficult to tie knots with. Certain knots do not ever seem to get tight and stay tight which can result in losing tackle if you are not careful.
Braided Dacron is also known to have very little resistance to abrasion. It has been known to break if it rubs against anything jagged or rough.
@@Puckerization yeah I just got some and it feels similar to braid. And it seems like it could dig in to the spool like braid.
I'm new to fly fishing watch the video twice still don't understand the two types of line borrow one just to check it out nothing like this
3:29
Having a hard time understanding the part about the backing diameter from the frame 3:00
666 th like
why does he have 4 different lines on a single rod
Burnt fingers.
I do all that with a pencil..... over complicating a simple thing.
Jesus. but why do we have to do it this way?
Then why don't you figure out another way. Yes this method sucks. It takes lots of time. It requires tools. The whole process is major pain. But, I don't believe there is another method that insures you get the proper amount of backing on the reel.
Wtf? This is dumb. I can't imagine fly fisherman 50 years ago making it this complicated. Can anyone direct me to a basic tutorial. I don't need the wheel reinvented.
I tell you what genius. Do a little web search and see what you find. If you really want the correct amount of backing on your reel there aren't many other ways to do it. In fact, if you find one, I will post the link right here for all to see. Just guessing how much backing to put on doesn't count.
@@tightlinevideo Im assuming everything you're saying is correct. I am such a beginner, when you pulled out the drill I got confused. I had taken your advice prior to your offer and found a video that explained it better for me. It also put your video more into focus. Im not denying your knowledge, I just struggled with your technique. Ta Fisher was the channel. Thanks for the reply. I think, in time, your way will be a timesaver so I'll return when I get a better understanding.
