    I have seen many people on RUclips doing the same set up. But your one of the first I actually seen doing it correctly. A big mistake allot of people make when the put the backing and fly line on, they take it off the top of the spool. It’s should always be bottom to bottom. Good job brother. The line always gets spooled on from the bottom of the reel so it needs to come off the bottom of the spool. Believe it or not. 4” crane wire have the same principle. 👍🏻

    Okay after your leader is it okay to put a dry fly on, or do I have to attach a tippet as well?

    • @patrickhelmuth3111
      @patrickhelmuth3111 11 месяцев назад +3

      You can put a fly straight on your leader, tippet is simply used to extend your leader as it gets shorter over time

    I’m just getting into fly fishing. Will the “backend” line hold up if I hook into a big fish??

    • @PatrickBlackdale
      @PatrickBlackdale 2 месяца назад

      The 'backing' will hold up as long as your connection to your fly line is solid and you are using the appropriate strength backing for the type of fishing you're doing.

      For subsurface fishing like nymphing or streamers, you can use weights/split shot.

    Why don't we have backing and fly line all in one?

    • @gregkosinski2303
      @gregkosinski2303 4 месяца назад

      For one, the manufacturer doesn’t know what size reel you’re going to put this on. But also your expensive fly line is fully sealed. Why penetrate that coating with some cheap ass Dacron backing?

    My brother got me Sage a fly rod kit for Christmas... I messed up putting the line on the reel, knotted it all up, and had to cut the line off the reel... went down to the shop the rod was bought at and they said $100-$120 for new line and for them to spool it correctly on the reel... I started laughing and walked out... said I don't wanna try fishing that bad if fishing line is $100+ a pop... pretty sure I offended them but the feeling is mutual... 😂
    Anyone wanna buy a brand new,never used, Sage fishing rod kit, minus the line? If the line was $100, it must be an expensive kit! Haha

      It’s a shop. The we’re trying to sell you the most expensive fly line they had. $120 is high-end fly line. You can get fishing with $40 line just fine. Yeah, fly line is expensive but you don’t need the most expensive spool in the shop. For what it’s worth, I work in a fairly large family owned outdoor store and almost nobody buys the super expensive stuff. Having said that, as a retail associate, the employee probably seen that you had a Sage and made some incorrect assumptions about your budget. No matter the customer, my first question is always “do you have a budget you’d like to stay under?”. It sets the pace for the rest of the sale. I’m glad to hear that you got set up for a decent price somewhere else!

    The thumb nail photo shows the fly line not being on a plastic spool , my Cortland fly line didn’t have the plastic spool if you put it on a stick through the middle it jams up , 🫲🏼😳🫱🏼

      If you don't have a spindle that fits through the fly line spool, you can simply leave the spool on the floor while you wind the line onto your reel. It's not the most ideal situation but I've done it hundreds of times and it works in a pinch. The fly line spool just spins and dances around the floor as you wind.
