As an absolute beginner, this is just what I was after. Having gone out just once so far, I want to improve my presentation of my nymph and this tutorial will definitely help me do that. Subbed!
Just bought my first kit yesterday, and started watching videos and found this one… Now I’m a pro!! lol No, but seriously this was amazingly helpful for something that seems so intimidating (like golf) Thank you so much!
You guys have been awesome with your videos, and podcast's! bought a starter pack before i leave for poland, and going to use the time away to get really good Fly fishing! I'll have to leave another review when i get everything and catch my first fish!
I've watched several videos before this one and created a list of questions as I watched. This ANSWERED sooo many questions. I'll honestly watch it a few times this week, and take notes. Saving and downloading for future use.
Just watched your video and subscribed as your content is brilliant for those of all experience , who are just learning or getting back into it after time off ,thanks 🤝
Thank you for the content. I am just getting started and your videos have been my go to. It’s awesome how welcoming and encouraging the fly community is.
Hi Alex and Spencer Love the videos you put out without getting to tangled up in the weeds. I did buy your VFC starter set however have not used it yet. I guess I live vicariously on you tube That and I live in So Cal and will have to drive to far and stay in a motel to find any decent fly fishing rivers. Please keep up your podcast they are very much appreciated!
agree,, I had tried over and under for my 4wt qnd 5 wt forward rigs and it's true can use a wt one over or under but yes albeit stay with recommended specs set up line set up this is a solid understanding ty for both of you here terrific presentations enjoying the site
I have been known to skip the backing on my river rigs... I've never cast further than 50 feet, and not even the pb of 22 inches pulled out much more than 20 feet. My reel drys faster and doesn't freeze up in the winter, or stay we long enough to grow something smelly. That said I have also put simple kite string on as backing. And am also experiencing with tarred bank line as backing. Thoughts?
Hey guys. Another great video. Have a question that has nothing to do with any of this 😂. Having a background in bass and panfish, I've always watched the barometer religiously. Falling barometer, front moving in. Great fish bite. Rising barometer, post frontal conditions. Really tuff bite. In all my research, videos watched, have never heard any mention of the effects of barometer on trout. Are there any effects? Thanks in advance
Appreciate it! 😎👍🏽 Ummmm. No. To be honest, I had to look up what exactly you were talking about. Haha. But after reading an article or two, it might have some merit for trout fishing. But like you, I’ve never seen a video or read an article about it.
I usually recommend just starting with a 4x leader. Gets the job done in most situations. But if you decide you want to start fishing with streamers more, I would get some 3x. Or if you are wanting to fish smaller dry flies (sizes 16+) I would get some 5x.
I’ve always heard that mono is also abrasion resistant and has more stretch, that’s why catfish guys will use a mono leader compared to braid. But I’m not sure if that’s applicable for these really light test lines.
Or you can get a loop that you can attach to the fly line...i bought one at the fly shop. And they helped me to put that onto my line too. My fly line had a loop originally, but i caught a catfish when i was asp fishing on the river, and it broke my fly line at the loop. So i had too cut it back an inch.
The tippet gets shorter and shorter when you start tying another fly or nymph. The leader will also become shorter when attaching a tippet with the surgeons knot. Isn’t it better to use a tippet ring??? Thanks for info!!!
Good point. Personal preference on that one. Some people don’t like tippet rings because of drag (dry fly situations mostly) and being difficult to see/attach cause they are so dang small. Lol.
Question, I just bought a rod and reel, had green line on it already, but I think it’s just got green fly line on it. Is that possible. How long does back need rob, fly line and the leader.
Hey Aaron. Not super familiar with float fishing. But would be happy to chat about it. Go fill out the contact us page on our website and we can get it figured out. 😎👍🏽 www.venturesflyco.com
Good video. Does the Butt diameter of the leader vs the diameter of the fly line make a difference? Can I have a 4wt leader attached to a 6wt fly line?
I am a newbie to fly fishing. I bought a random box of flies from Amazon.. how can I figure out what size the flies are to be able to make the calculation? Appreciate any help, I am guessing I need to buy different sized hooks and match them up?
Hey! Good question. Might be worth buying a couple of size 10, 12, 14, & 16 flies so you can compare. They also have “hook gauges” that you help get a ball park number. Hope this helps. 😎👍🏽
That means it can fish with either line, so you can pick your line based on the size of flies you're going to throw/fish you're targeting. 6wt is better for trout and bass, a 7wt is better for larger flies, some pike fishing, bass, and it's a bit too heavy for most trout.
I find it frustrating that, even though I'm an amateur caster, my line never, ever *EVER* lands in a straight line. NOT at least, like the instructors here on YT. There is ALWAYS some sort of curve, bend or wrinkle in the line. It's RIO line and man, it's frustrating!!
Hey! Thanks for sharing. Definitely think it’s something we can figure out. Would love to chat about it. Reach out via DM (Instagram, Tiktok) or Email (livereellife@venturesflyco.com) and we can get it figured out. 😎🤙🏽
We’ll only use tippet if we … 1.) need to extend the leader or replace the thin end after cutting it off throughout the rig changes 2.) Set up different rigs (like you said, on a dry dropper) A fresh 9 ft leader straight out of the package is ready to fish. 😎🤙🏽

65 and just bought my first fly rod/reel, can’t wait to learn more
This is by far the best explanation on the internet, you guys have a great way of making things easy to understand. Thanks for a great video
Thanks so much for the kind feedback. Glad you found it helpful. Plenty more coming your way!
It was my understanding that a tapered leader has a section of tippet at the end, no need to add , just replace as necessary.
That is correct. You’ll only need to add tippet as it gets shorter from changing flies or getting snagged. 😎🤙🏽
Leader = butt + tippet.
Some tapered leader is colored. Add clear/transparent tippet to improve stealth
Bro no joke just watch all the master class videos YESTERDAY and was waiting for this to come out. You guys are the best!

Till now, you are the best i have watched. You go to the point and not loose time with lot of details.

Thank you for sharing this information. I’m a beginner and about to purchase my first set up for a trip to 11 mile near lake George in Colorado
I enjoy the content you guys put out! I listen to Untangled all the time and enjoy listening to Spencer! Also Green Tea > Diet Coke 😂

So would it just be best as a beginner to get 3x,4x,5x leader to start for different situations or just for for something in the middle?

Or if you are wanting to fish smaller dry flies (sizes 16+) I would get some 5x.

I have used 8'6" rod and a 10 foot leader 9 foot fly rod 12 foot if general go the 10 foot leader

As a curiosity question, im a float fisherman, looking to get into fly fishing. Could i use normal float fishing line as a tippet?
Hey Aaron. Not super familiar with float fishing. But would be happy to chat about it. Go fill out the contact us page on our website and we can get it figured out. 😎👍🏽 www.venturesflyco.com
what type of line should i use as backing? is there a certain backing line?
This is fantastic!
Appreciate the feedback! 😎🤙🏽
Good video. Does the Butt diameter of the leader vs the diameter of the fly line make a difference? Can I have a 4wt leader attached to a 6wt fly line?
Yup. A 4 wt leader should be plenty thick in the butt section for attachment to a 6 wt line.
I use a 10 foot leader as average it's a general purpose leader for lakes a 12 foot leader
13:11 absolute comedic gold. "hear you get out of the truck" lmao
rude
Yes . Lol

How do you know the size of the fly?
if my rod is 6/7weight which one is better to actually go with?
That means it can fish with either line, so you can pick your line based on the size of flies you're going to throw/fish you're targeting. 6wt is better for trout and bass, a 7wt is better for larger flies, some pike fishing, bass, and it's a bit too heavy for most trout.

Greeeeeeeeat Video😊, guys
Thanks! Appreciate it. 😎🤙🏽
What is The tensile strength on The wf2f line? (Kg)
I just use a 7wt 9ft rod and therefore have a 9th leader 3x and a 3x tippet
why use tippet? why not use regular fishing line?
Tippet is often a lot finer (thinner) than regular fishing line. But if you can find it in the right size, it’s the same thing.
Why has nobody created clear fly line? Just curious if color is such a priority for some to get camouflaged
Clear won’t blend as well
I find it frustrating that, even though I'm an amateur caster, my line never, ever *EVER* lands in a straight line.

Where do I get that hat!?!?
Do I have to use both leaders and tippet? Normally I just use a 9ft leader and it works fine (Ik for a dry dropper I’d need both)
We’ll only use tippet if we …
1.) need to extend the leader or replace the thin end after cutting it off throughout the rig changes
2.) Set up different rigs (like you said, on a dry dropper)
A fresh 9 ft leader straight out of the package is ready to fish. 😎🤙🏽
@@venturesflyco couldn’t you just theoretically make a long tag end and tie a nymph onto that?
BRO I HAVE THE SAME HAT
Its a cool one! 😎👍🏽
I want it! What is it?!
