    Thanks for this video man. I've been a baitcaster/spinner fisherman my entire life. The fly fishing bug got ahold of me and I picked up my first setup yesterday. Been absorbing RUclips videos like crazy. Definitely one of the better ones! And great catch btw. This is the way.

    Wanting to get into Fly fishing and been watching beginner casting videos for days and some that was 30 mins long and never got to the point, would also assume the people watching knew how much line to pull out etc. you got to the point and actually went step by step. Just a great video easy to follow. Some people just don’t know how to teach others. You did so good. Thank you! New sub!

    Very good tutorial Dan. Fly fishing has really evolved since I started 50 years ago. Even casting techniques have changed. You have condensed the basics for newbies and provided some reminders for us "set in our ways" older dudes.

    About to open a pkg this week with my first fly rod kit - Been watching fly stuff for couple months. This is by far, the best quicky on getting the line out, one of the things I was most confused about. I've had all the other basics drilled into my brain it's become instinctive. 10 and 2, that's not hard to remember as I'll date myself, those numbers were also important in our youth for another reason in high school.
    This filled in some big holes. I'm sure there's other great ones out there, but I just haven't seen them. Learned a lot across a broad range, but not getting the line out, the way you explained it. Sometimes, it just takes the right version to click I guess. I feel I'll be pretty decent off the go with the amount of time I've spent going to RUclips Fly Fishing school. Great job man!

    Excellent presentation! Well explained. Dan, do you fish with other techniques besides fly fishing? I am asking about using spin reel, bait casting or closed reel fishing? Was told that one may catch more fish and a lot more easily using these other techniques……that fly fishing was too slow and too difficult a technique (I.e. getting line caught in trees often. Does not happen with the other techniques.). Any thoughts would be appreciated! Thank you.

    • @FlyFishDan
      @FlyFishDan  11 месяцев назад

      Thanks! I used a spinning rod from about age 3 to 16...once I moved to fly fishing, I've never looked back. If you put some time into learning, it far more fulfilling than any other type of fishing. Cheers!

    • @Eclipse1988
      @Eclipse1988 4 месяца назад +1

      Yep! And I've commented about this on other videos, myself. A big BIG tip is to get over the "whip". As spinners, we're used to using speed and strength to load the rod and sent it way out there (at least I was). It's about going nice and easy. I forced myself to slow down and relax with it. And wait for that line to load behind you. The line itself will carry the fly out, not your force. In my opinion, it feels like the physics really takes place between your rod and fly line itself, and not you trying to launch a lure 80 feet. Keep it up. I literally put all my gear down and exclusively fly fished for a week and the progress is beautiful

  • @FlyFishDan

      How much of the fly line is hanging from the rod when you cast? Do you have the leader dragging in/touching the water?

    • @FlyFishDan
      @FlyFishDan  Год назад

      You typically want to have a full length of floating line past the tip of your rod - your entire tapered leader should be in the water prior to picking up and casting. Hope that helps!

    I like to false cast a few times to better aim my distance I want to place my fly. I like to work sideways with the floats and just shooting a bunch of line out is not going to get my fly to land at the exact distance my target is. So false casting and slowly feeding line out with each cast works best for me on rivers with precise landing zones.

    Wow! Beautiful fish. Your teaching technique is fantastic. Where are you located? I've never seen a cutthroat trout.

    Thanks for the tips! Question, How do you manage the line when the are weeds and brash grabbing your line when you on the bank?

    • @FlyFishDan
      @FlyFishDan  Год назад

      That is just part of fly fishing I'm afraid - try not to 'yank' the line, easy to damage your expensive investment (fly line). They do make stripping baskets to keep that from happening...there are just bulky.

    Oh wow I been out here casting like crazy and putting my line on the water then full casting again. I didn’t even know about false casting .

    • @FlyFishDan
      @FlyFishDan  3 месяца назад

      What you are doing is water loading, and that is actually easier than trying to false cast a bunch. Once you start to perfect your personal cast, you'll only false cast maybe once or twice during any fly cast. Cheers!

    Nice vid, great tips here. Any tips/guidance on shooting the line? I'm familiar with the double-haul technique, but actually putting it into practice is another thing..

    Awesome video as always Dan! I'm getting into fly fishing now and was curious if you recommend any fly box starter kits for trout?

    I have a 9ft 5wt rod with 7”5 ft 5x leader. What size fly should I use?. I put on a fly and didn’t get far “distance”. I’m a super beginner… thanks.

      I would check out Redds Flies - they have built fly boxes for trout and have a lot of great patterns to try. I also built a box of my own favorite trout flies on fishonrods.com

    Good job. I was skeptical
    I've come across too many pretentious, blowhard fly fishing pedants who pretend it's as complex as nuclear physics
    Good introduction without any excessive jargon or nonsense
    Thumbs up!
