Back in the 50's my Dad taught me how to fly cast. I wanted to use my whole arm ( Like using a bull whip ). He took a belt ( placed around my chest ) and fastened my upper arm against my side so it would not move. This made me only use the lower part of my arm and wrist. I was ready to use a fly rod when I could cast a fly without using the upper portion of my arm. I also had to have the fly land on a paper plate sized target for lure placement. Same thing when using a casting rod , proper lure placement was expected. Just some of his teachings which has stuck with me to these 77 years.
There's something about Flip telling you something vs. anybody else telling you, that just makes sense. I honestly believe that we sometimes overlook how good of a teacher he actually is. And so is Brian, his instructional videos are by far some of my favorites and I revisit them regularly. Thanks for this.
Now that life has finally slowed down for me, its time to get back to learning to fly fish again. Probably gonna start getting a vise and tools together too. I'll have to watch the fly casting series again. Another inspiring video thanks guys.
I just want to say a big thank you for all the help you've done. I watched all your "learn to fly" videos before I started fly fishing. It helped me a lot getting started. But the magic happend when I re-watched them a bit later, and saw the details in the videos instead of the general idea. It took me to the next level. So thanks again! Kings regards from Sweden 🇸🇪🙏
Being a fly angler out of south Florida I’ve watched the walkers Kay chronicles growing up ,and I could not imagine not doing so, he had taught so much throughout the series aswell as his videos and they have taught me everything I know as a fly angler. This man will live on a legacy for ever, absolute legend! Thank you for the video and I hope to see more!
Any time you get Brian and Flip together it is fantastic. So much respect for each other and the amount that we all gain is immeasurable. Thanks for making content like this.
There is no other fisherman on the planet I would more rather spend time fishing with than Flip. Thank you Flip. You have enriched my life on the water...and in general.
I am a beginning beginner. This lesson on casting was great! Thank you. I never understood why some said, don’t break your wrist. That doesn’t make sense to me. Now I know about the full cast! Thank you for sharing this wisdom!
This was an eye opener. I’ve been taught to basically not move my wrist at all. Coming from spin fishing, it has always felt unnatural. I’ll make sure to break my wrist from now on without thinking it makes me a worse caster. Thanks Flip and Brian!
Inter generational respect on display. A master and student sharing knowledge with us all. I am enjoying watching the student well down the road in becoming the master in their own right, while humbling acknowledging we never stop learning. Well done gentlemen.
One of the best episodes! Fly fishing is up there with golf; many ways to do it but some methods are preferred by the great teachers, and they are both crazy hard, difficult but I love the challenge.
Flip just gets fly casting on such a different level that he can distill it down so simply. Growing up in Florida has always been my idol. He's just such a gem of a human.
Flip is a national treasure. I do the same thing forget saying things that come naturally after so many years experience. It’s just how it is it’s something that you just know in the moment.
Yep 👍.sounds & vibration travels 3 times faster , in water than air. This is the reason we walk softly along stems & under cut backs. Especially if you are stalking cruising fish.
Thank you very much for sharing this beautiful conversation with your friend ! I love It so much! I wait next episode ! Greetings from North west of Italy
As a lefty (who certainly would prefer any cat in the oven) with all this wonderful advice, I was almost as confused as Flip when confronted with all the things he didn't remember saying in the past (sort of like my morning conversations with my wife...). Great video, great advice, and much appreciated!
Have you ever thrown a Frisbee? Forehand or backhand your upper and lower arm give you some forward speed and once your arm is forward of your body and pointing at your target you break your wrist with a snap which spins the disc increasing speed again and adds accuracy in flight.
Cast the moment, it's not always perfect, but it's the moment have. Simple if you stop thinking, best when you try the least. It's a great problem to have, thanks.
Doesn’t get much better than Flip! Great session, Thanks MRO! 👍 Loved the cat in the oven comment! 🤔😂 Whenever I ask my buddy “What do ya think”? He replies “I think it takes a pretty big dog to weigh a hundred pounds”. I don’t ask him much after all these years.🙂Have a great one guys!🎣
I hope he comes back to Cbus soon. I loved his casting class and got so much out of it. I still think about his casting instruction every time I hold a rod.
I’m 14 and now learning golf from my pap and I’m going to be starting fly fishing early next year if I get a rod for Christmas The breaking of the wrist in golf hopefully will help me keep in mind to break my wrist while fly casting Thanks y’all!
U can do no better than to listen to Flip and Lefty. I sure wished i had access to them when i was starting into fly fishing in the 1960s. The moderately priced gear is so much better today as well. Invest wisely and you will be set for life. I still use my Pfleuger reels of the 60s and 70s.
I was fortunate to start watching the Walkers Cay C about 1970 and that made this Indiana boy a dedicated salt fisher though i seldom have the opportunity to taste the salt. The other thing the first started my salt desire was an article in one of the Garcia annuals in the late 60s that showed this gill fisher that flies for salt were available. I could go on but these 2 things are what opened my horizens.

The more movement of the arm, the less accurate the cast. Simple. Thanks for sharing.
That’s a great story, a practical lesson learned from a very wise man…
You had me slightly concerned at "he took a belt..." but I'm glad it went the other way. 😅 Anyway, good way to think about accurate casting.

You are all brain washed.... Flip may be a good fisherman but he's a lousy teacher!
Can never have enough of Flip or Lefty.
This is very true. Absolute legends.
