Me again. To those who feel the Krk-5 are to boomy (100hz-300hz) and are down in the midrange. Yes it does sound that way but allow me to clarify. The boom in the midbass ( I believe mastering engineers called this the cloud) is not really there...Because as I've mentioned already there is no low bass in the krk-5 making the mid and upper bass stand out giving the illusion of boomy bass. There does seem to be an annoying drop in the 2 to 3khz range. Adjust the high frequency setting at the back of your monitor. But that's for highs not mid frequency. It miss-named. In the manual it's states that it's a shelving eq that starts at 2khz! It is better for adjusting mids. For more midrange turn the "high frequency" dial back to - 2db. That should fix the problem. No 2 rooms are alike. The lack of midrange is not the fault of the monitor but are rooms; most of which I"m guessing are not acoustically treated.
Yo Brotherman, first time landing on one of your vids. I did a quick search on KRK 5" and you popped up. I have KRK 8's but the 5's are just supreme on a desk studio set up. I have a powered 10" sub that completely complements the 5's I watched your vid and gotta say EXCELLENT presentation, practical advice and smooth delivery ! I subscribed.
I was not paid or compensated in any way for this review. I've owned these speakers for a few months and wanted to offer a review since I think they represent a great value and option for the home/project studio owner.
The bass on those speakers is just amazing! I was shocked when I've first time heared them in my friends' studio...With good mixing console they produce enough bass needed for quality music production. Amazing how good they are and how celar and natural sound they produce...Best value for buck for sure...
I got my pair last Thursday, wow they are heavy and insane with quality sounds 👌 🔥 😍 👏 the best studio monitors so far ,I bought 3 monitors before and the rest cannot compare
Here's a review from Amazon may be found interesting: "Overall, I think these are really nice monitors for the price and are the perfect size for my home studio. They sound good, look good, come with all the connection options you would expect from studio monitors and the low frequency, high frequency and volume trim pots on the rear are a nice addition. I would have given these 5 stars if it weren't for one "feature", the built-in 30 min. auto standby function. I gather this is KRK trying to be green and help you save power but I see this as a nuisance and completely unnecessary. Not only do I use these for home recording but I also use them to listen to music at low volume while at work during the week. Herein lies the problem, if the monitors do not detect an audio signal of what KRK considers sufficient strength, they will shut off on their own after ~30 minutes. I note that even though the sound shuts off, KRK thought it would be ok to keep their logo illuminated (don't want to save too much, do we?). Annoying at best. I am more than capable of turning them off when not in use to save power when I decide it's time, not when some electrical/audio engineer, focus group or corporate clown sees fit. The least they could have done was give the end user the ability to either adjust the standby signal threshold or disable the auto standby completely, maybe via a potentiometer or dip switch on the rear of the monitor. Honestly, I've considered returning these monitors numerous times because of this single "feature"."
Man I just wanna say thank you and happy new year :) Yours tutorials helped me solving my recording issues and much more. keep up the great work greets from Austria
After realizing I was sorely in need of monitors that offered far better clarity than what I had, I stumbled across KRK Rokits and started watching numerous reviews. I ended up getting the 6" G3 -- a decision based significantly on this review together with updated specs of the G3. The moment I had them set-up with levels and eqs set for my room, sitting in the sweet spot was utopia for my ears, and still is. Can't wait to get started on the next project from scratch to put these things to use. Now I'm leaning toward a new set of ear cans ... errr, monitors wit a set of KRK. I've been using MDR-7506 with Sonarworks' Reference 3 plugin. Thanks for this review, Graham!
One of the best reviews i've seen on youtube, Actually know what your talking about. "300" bucks in the U.S, they're $500 in Australia. Worth it though, good speakers.
Thank you Graham for being one of the only people to have the common sense and honesty to state that giving a demo of a speaker in a RUclips video is useless. I see so often other people giving sound comparison of speakers and I just have to laugh. What they're really hearing is the speaker filtered through a microphone and through their own speaker or headset. Kudos for you for being honest. As for the Krk 5, G3 - I must agree. Great speaker for the price and one of the best you can get for home studio budgets. I started out by getting a JBL used speaker off of Ebay, nice speaker and it lasted me a few years. But older speakers are potted with a compound that is susceptible to moisture, and as such they tend to break down with age. The early KRK speakers had the same issue. But these newer ones use a different compound. Great info, keep up the good work.
Not only did i think that this was a very informative review. But you also touched base on many factors going into sound, I personalty am not doing mixing but I am in a audio production course learning a variety of things and how you explained the difference in room corner to car subject made a lot of sense. Also THANK YOU for explaining to people how a demo of how they sound on a video would serve no purpose.
What up fam! Thank you for sharing! Today I was in a gear store looking at these monitors, and got a bit tempted to buy them. Good to see some professional's opinion as well.
ive got the rokit 8s and they are GREAT for their price range. i find what you get for your money is far beyond what most companies will do for that price. im in a much bigger room so the extra bass of the 8s is needed, but for smaller rooms the 5s or 6s are plenty good enough, and much cheaper. and @ whoever asked for audio examples, you do not need monitors yet.
I have a pair of Rokit 6 G2 mated with a JBL LSR2310SP sub running through an old M-Audio Delta 66 and Omni i/o setup. I have been using this configuration for a few years now and I absolutely love the sound quality of it. I've considered the Yamaha and, while they are quite good and seem to enjoy their fair share of "industry standard," I find them to be a bit on the bright side for my tastes. The silk dome tweeters take that 'bite' down a notch for me and the overall sound with the right tune playing sends me into multiple eargasm! I totally recommend the Rocket 6 (the 5 was a bit small for my particular requirements as I had a little bit more area to fill with sound but should work great for the bedroom studio!). Don't lay too much faith in the haters because krk does make some serious bang for your buck!
Thank F someone said that recording audio samples of speakers makes no sense. I have no idea how people are not aware of that they're still not listening to the speaker from the review, that's literally impossible.
Yeah I've got these too. Great bang for the buck. I used to have the RP6's but like he said it was a bit too much sound for my room. I just got Sonarworks speaker calibration software which makes a big improvement seeing as I have no room acoustic treatment.
Great review Graham. Glad you mentioned about audio demo's and why you don't include them in your reviews. Honestly can people not understand that what they hear will not be a representation of the speaker your reviewing but rather, more of what they already know i.e how their own set up sounds. Common sense prevails so well done for that. Great speakers by the way. Been considering these for a while now.
I got KRK Rokit 5 Studio Monitors, to me its awesome, prior to this pair, got others but didn't get the same vibes. My mind truly absorbs your Musical Guidance, happy anticipation with Videos I understand with clarity. Forward in successful achievement. Thank You again
Excellent straight forward and honest review. I like how you subtly in the nicest way possible say that demoing the speakers thru microphone thru video thru youtube is basically pointless. I absolutely annoys me when I see reviews and they actually try to demo the speakers.
I've got the old (original?) Rokit 5s and had them for about a decade and they've done me proud that whole time. Saying that, that one nugget of info about small rooms being over bright suddenly has made it all click into place! I was finding it impossible to get the balance right when moving from studio to headphones, car, etc. for testing and would always get way too much top and bass, despite having moved the speakers in towards the middle of the room, played with the HF knob on the speakers, etc. I knew about bass traps, but not about excess HF - this should make a massive difference to getting the sound right :) On a more negative note, however, I can't help but notice those diamonds of foam on the back wall form little black swastikas either side of your console!!!!
It's not a dumb question at all. Some places sell each speaker separately while others sell them as a pair. usually its cheaper buying them as a pair rather than individually. Hope that helps :)
I have and used these speakers for my bed room stereo . when my other speakers blew out , and used these in the meantime . they are more than great and for the money you cannot beat these speakers . also the KRK head phone mentioned are great
Great review! I have a pair of Rokit 5's and they sound great. The forward firing bass ports are better because you don't rely on what is behind the speaker.
That was an awesome review, Graham. I'm thinking about buying them for a couple of days now and I think you convinced me to order them. I will try them out and I will tell you, what I think about it. Thanks again, Graham, for that clear, precise and wonderful review.
Lol when i watched this video years ago, i didn't understand most of the things, but watching it again: i understand hell of a lot now growing with your channel.
I checked out a pair once (the $199 pair). Then the GF said , what about those Yamahas? So we listened to the M80 HS's. Big difference (but $299 each). I bought the Yamahas and I been told by people that studied audio production that they are what they learned on. Love them.
the explanation at 7:20 its just amazing, it should be in any tutorials. people just dont get, its the same when they used to put comercials of dvd video quality on vcr movies...
no you're cool, you are on the right track. Mixing on those is fine for the time being. Like I said, every studio will always have a set of 5's in them so you really cant go wrong starting there. The problem with movie speakers though is they are usually not "flat" so they may boost your sound in certain areas. When you take your mix somewhere else it could sound extremely different. That's why you want "flat" reference monitors. but go for it, get some 5's and use the sub you got.
Most people think they need to get the biggest, most powerful monitors when they're first shopping for a pair. This size of speaker is perfect for a bedroom studio! I got a pair of the Rokit 8s and they were too much for my room (10X14). A 5 or 6 inch setup is definitely the way to go.
I have a pair of RP5s. After two years I just purchased a sub, the KRK 10s. I would not recommend getting the RP5s without a sub. Even with the sub, I consider upgrading to RP6s or VXT-6. I love KRK in general. However, the 5" diameter comes at a cost - zero low end and not too much low mid either. No issues with the volume though. These speakers are loud but for precise music production and mixing in the lower range this size of speakers will not do the job alone. Thanks for your review btw!
Graham your video's on RUclips have meant so much to me. I'm sure that you get that a lot. However each time I am worn out in my studio (bedroom), I check your RUclips video's and find myself able to rekindle my available euphoria of music creation.
tehpeasant They are flat...Down to 90hz. I have had them for years and in an untreated room they produce no low bass (20-80hz).. All monitors are tested in lab perfect conditions - here is where they live up to their spec of being flat down to 52hz. So unless you have a dead (known as a Zero room - zero reflections) flat room you are out of luck. You can for under $400 U.S. buy a pair of active monitors that will be flat to 60hz but they often sacrifice midrange detail. The KRK monitor is more balanced than any other monitor in it's price range. If they sound boomy it is because in most rooms the lower mid-bass of the KRK-5'S is the last octave you will hear. This gives the illusion of a boomy speaker, because there is no low bass to anchor them. Just pretend the low bass doesn't exist....Most of the bass detail is in the cloud (90-250hz) anyway. So just mix your bass tracks like normal. If you get the cloud right then the low bass will follow. Assuming it hasn't been touched. Remember, you can't mix what you can't here. TIP: When you mix with these don't use any additive EQ below 150hz and that will solve the problem. Once you are aware that they produce nothing below 90hz you will know longer be pushing out globs of low Eq to get a decent low end out of the KRK-5'S. All those great Beatle songs were mixed on the Infamous Altec 540A. The company claimed that the combined frequency response of 540A driver's were 20 - 20 000hz +- 2db. But the audio engineers that use them heard something like: 100 - 12 000hz and yet those Beatle albums sound amazing. Especially all that detail in those multilayered mono mixes. Most rooms are way too bright. turn that hi-frequency trim down to -2db. Footnote: The "so called" Hi-frequency trim is misnamed since it has a shelving eq that starts at 2Khz which as we know is in the midrange. Actually the trim alters the midrange and High frequency response of the monitor. So the trim will help with the mids/highs being too laid back in the mix. I hope I have helped and not confused you.
I got the rokit5s and think they're great. One warning, if you're making dubstep, get a bigger cone. The 8 particularly. Great for everything else, though.
I left a reply yesterday on a comparison between the HS50's and KRK and recommending the HS50's over the KRK. Until this morning I hadn't demo'd the KRK5 (just 6 and 8) which I didn't rate. Today compare HS50 with KRK5 (and others) the KRK5's won, so I purchased them. The HS50's lacked too much bottom end to me. If I had the space, I would get the HS80's but I don't so the KRK5's fit well. They are better then the KRK6 to my ear, which sounded a little wooly and missing some mids to me.
Quite a few people have noted that these are a bit lighter on the bass. So if that's all you're doing, you might consider other options as well. However, having said that, you could do worse. It's a great entry-point for a small studio, and as Graham notes, it's all about knowing how your mixes sound on these monitors, in your room, and how that translates to real-world listening situations--you're going to want to test-drive your mixes in the real-world anyway (e.g. through a club PA).
I plan on buying the KRKs myself because they seem like the best bang for the buck in monitors. Getting the 6s since they go down a tad lower than the 5s.
I have the HS80Ms and they are absolutely amazing. I have listened to my friend's Rokits and they just don't sound as clear... A bit biased towards the low end. If you look online the general consensus is that the HS80Ms are better.
Hey. Great review! I actually learned a lot more than just about the speakers. Thanks. On the topic of the bass, is the bass on the speakers adequate however ? Or is the sound light ?
For $300 they are not bad. They do color the sound; a lot compared to higher end monitors but for an absolute beginner/someone just testing the waters in recording, the rokits are a good choice. Acoustic treatment is very important too. If you are willing to spend a bit more money, I would go with Yamaha HS50M or HS80M's any day of the week. Brutally honest and very nicely priced.
they are acoustic panels. not for soundproofing. they are used to reduce reflections coming from your speakers. notice how they are behind both speakers. and you will have bass traps in all corners to keep a true bass response. big studios are professionally treated for soundproofing, floating walls ect.. they are just used to control the true audio that will be present in your mix..
I would buy a pair of used HD-600 sennheiser headphones(250-285) before I would buy any low end studio monitors for mixing. I just bought rokit5 pair for DJ monitors and that should be fine but if you are serious about producing, a great pair of headphones will go much further then a low end monitor. Also treatment of your room is KEY before any sort of decision can be made about how your monitors sound. I own a pair of genelec s30d for mixing. Used to use alesis mk2. Night and Day difference.
I have the Krk 5's.. 1st editions. even though they are square, they sound great. I also have a pair of 6's 2g and a pair of 8's g3. They are all great speakers for the money.. I have the 10" sub, also a great compliment to my studio.. No matter what you end up with.. Always think about acoustic treatment. This will help you tune your room, to get the best quality, out of your gear. By now, I am sure most of you know this. Also, I have the KRK ERGO.. Look into this..This is really the best way to know how sound waves, travel in your studio...
Most people who want to start a home studio usually like having two since it'll give more perception when you here your recordings when mixing. That way both ears are actually receiving an equal range... From what I could sum up, but I am still trying to learn myself. haha
I'm looking at the Rokit6 and the similar new Pioneer 6" speakers... the wife said she likes the "not yellow" ones better... would they do the trick as well as the KRK monitors...? I am planning to use them for DJ practice, general listening in my cave, and beginner production. I am looking at a pair of 6" monitors, Maschine Mikro, Scarlett 2i4, Shure mic, and maybe later a full on DAW or another hardware controller, like APC40 and Ableton, or Studio One, etc... am I on the right track? Thanks, hope to get a chance to watch more of your channel soon....
That's a good idea. Yeah, they don't really go that low, but for most people they will be fine. If you're mixing sub frequencies, however, you'll need that sub or the rokit8s.

This was implemented due to new power amp regulations in the EU, not necessarily by the manufacturer's choice.

I checked out a pair once (the $199 pair). Then the GF said , what about those Yamahas? So we listened to the M80 HS's. Big difference (but $299 each). I bought the Yamahas and I been told by people that studied audio production that they are what they learned on. Love them.
I just purchased the new 'gold' anniversary edition. $109 each at G.C. Picking up on Sat. Can't wait. I really like your vids
Thanks man! I just purchase the G3 version, I'm waiting for delivering. Thanks to you I will Get my firts monitors.
Just got mine and holy I thought they would be like whatever but I was wrong they're amazing
the explanation at 7:20 its just amazing, it should be in any tutorials. people just dont get, its the same when they used to put comercials of dvd video quality on vcr movies...
Pretty comparable sounding in my room. The Truths give me more bass response IMO, but other than that they are both effective. They do as advertised.
That's good to know, especially for those on tight budget. Thanks for the reply, Graham, and keep up the great work.
I've had a pair of Adam A7's for the past 3 years, never gone back, that or a pair of NS10s and you'll be sorted for many years!
no you're cool, you are on the right track. That's why you want "flat" reference monitors. but go for it, get some 5's and use the sub you got.
thanks for the vids.
def a good humble dude that gives honest feedback.
How you know he's humble, how you know he don't rob banks? He might do that then come and make his music....hahahaha
You can use an RCA to 3.5mm cable or adapter. Remember male on both ends.
Thanks for this grounded review. People can learn from your casual professionalism.
Graham your video's on RUclips have meant so much to me. I'm sure that you get that a lot. However each time I am worn out in my studio (bedroom), I check your RUclips video's and find myself able to rekindle my available euphoria of music creation.
They are good but not really flat

AV 40 Active Studio Monitor Speakers (Pair)
+tehpeasant That's kinda the point of studio monitors......
+Alex Fishburn What? the point is to be flat. Dude.. You joking right. :D
They aren't that flat, the sub is cut off a bit
tehpeasant They are flat...Down to 90hz.
This gives the illusion of a
boomy speaker, because there is no low bass to anchor them.
I got a pair at Guitar Center for $150! I never been so happy.
I got the rokit5s and think they're great. One warning, if you're making dubstep, get a bigger cone. The 8 particularly. Great for everything else, though.
I bought them after watching your review. I am happy with it. Thank you!
THANK YOU for explaining why a sound test is a complete waste of time, great review as well
I left a reply yesterday on a comparison between the HS50's and KRK and recommending the HS50's over the KRK.
I love my KRK Rockitts too. Never looked back after getting them.
Love your work, Graham. Very essential und very instructive.
I have the HS80Ms and they are absolutely amazing. I have listened to my friend's Rokits and they just don't sound as clear... A bit biased towards the low end. If you look online the general consensus is that the HS80Ms are better.
You have a soothing voice. Sing us a lullaby.
Hey. Great review! I actually learned a lot more than just about the speakers. Thanks. On the topic of the bass, is the bass on the speakers adequate however ? Or is the sound light ?
What brand/model of speaker stands are you using in the video? Dig em' 👍🏻
I have the KRK R8's, love them. Thanks for the review of these awesome speakers.
nice to see somebody who actually set up the monitors in their proper 60 degree equilateral triangle
Very well articulated. I like to mix on small monitors ,reason being if I can make things sound good on them , it'll be slammin on larger systems.
this video is exactly what i needed to hear to convince me to go and get them thanks man!!
they are acoustic panels. not for soundproofing. they are used to reduce reflections coming from your speakers. notice how they are behind both speakers. and you will have bass traps in all corners to keep a true bass response. big studios are professionally treated for soundproofing, floating walls ect.. they are just used to control the true audio that will be present in your mix..
I got the blue KrK 6's on clearance for 169$ and I LOVE them!
From what I could sum up, but I am still trying to learn myself. haha
Lookin awesome today as usual
good point about the audio.
Another great Review. Thanks Graham!
I have the KRK Rokit 6s and I love them.
This is just… a great video. In so many ways. How refreshing
no they hiss with no cables plugged in, and i've tried several different mains outlets. from what i've read, a bit of hiss is normal for these.
That's a good idea. Yeah, they don't really go that low, but for most people they will be fine. If you're mixing sub frequencies, however, you'll need that sub or the rokit8s.
