I just got studio monitors and when I got everything hooked up, I got this awful crackling, electrical interference. When I played my guitar or keyboard, I could hear them but still got the interference. I learned that this is actually a common issue with a custom built computer. The usb cable transfers the sound from inside the computer to the speakers. I found something called IDefender that actually cancels the ground loop which causes the interference. I ordered it and it's supposed to be in today. I'm really hoping this solves my problem. I'm ready to do some recording again.

What is the difference between balanced or unbalanced?
Balanced audio uses three conductors to carry the audio signal. Two of the conductors carry negative and positive signals (audio is an AC signal), and the third is used for grounding. With an unbalanced signal, there are only two conductors. One carries positive, the carries negative and is also used for ground. The advantage of a balanced signal is that because the ground is seperate from the negative conductor, there is less chance that radio frequency interferance will get into the audio signal.
Generally, +4 db, balanced signal are the way to go for long cable runs. The high gain and isolated ground make for a cleaner, noise-free signal. If cable runs are shorter, there should be no problem with RF interferance or noise on unbalanced, -10 db signals. If you have RF problems in your studio, you probably have some kind of ground fault, and it's a good idea to have it checked out by an electrician. Typical studios have both +4 and -10 db gear, so the important thing there is to make sure gain stages match all the way through the signal chain. The biggest cause of noise and distortion in audio is mismatched gain.

    • @dbmdrums1105
      @dbmdrums1105 2 года назад +1

      Two guesses brother.
1:- You might be using TS Cables.
As he mentioned in the video . TRS cables and XLR cables are usually preferred for audio production work as these are of "Balanced Line" .
So maybe you should try using a TRS 1/4inch cable or XLR cables .
2:- Incase you have a TS cable (Tip and Sleeve) you might want to check the length of the cable. The longer the length of the cable higher are the chances for it to pick up" electronic interferences". So do check the length of the cable it should be within 15ft anything more than that would give you those "hisss sounds". Usually guitar cables are TS Cables thus when recording electric guitar, you use shorter cables (8ft) and sit a little closer to the interface to avoid any audio interferences.
I think you should use TRS cables those usually do the trick ....👌.
You might also want to check the inputs of the audio interface itself. If those ports are damaged then you could still get those weird farting noises while you record😅 ( This happened with my Focusrite interface ).
Last but not the least don't keep any electronic devices near your monitors again thank to "Electro Magnetism" monitors tend to even pick those up 😟😟.

I really appreciate the fact that you´re doing this for dummies. Because I am a dummy.

I have to laugh and now understand why the music technology industry is not as big as it can be.....Because everything is mad unnecessarily complex.

If this isn't working for you on Mac try going to System Preferences > Sound > Output and make sure your audio interface is selected

Thanks Matthew, exactly the info I was looking for and explained in terms that even a non-techie like myself can get. Very useful emphasis on balanced, unbalanced. Great video.

Great explanation of balanced vs unbalanced - thanks!. I have a semi-related question: I have a Scarlett Solo and use it to connect my guitar to my PC for use with Amplitube 4. I am getting tired of having to use headphones while playing (I rarely record - I just like to play using the amp variety and options in Amplitube). I would like to know if I can use studio monitors while playing (BTW - I do not play loud - usually.... ;). Can I use monitors (instead of headphones) and if so, are there any you recommend (under $300 for the pair)? Thanks!

Yes, you can. It's how i have been playing bass. Though idk of a good sub 300$ pair, as it'a hard to find such things. I guess any monitor with a 5 or 6 inch sub would work great with eletric guitar.

ok so i downloaded the user manual of the subwoofer, and jack outputs from the audio interfaces goes to jack input from the subwoofer. then i need different cables, because subwoofer output are only xlr, as left and right monitor speakers. but still don't know if the cables will matche the "balanced" attribute of the system. this is the trickist part of the procedure i guess. i will watch again your video to see if it helps. i downloaded the audio interface manual and output is actually balanced. but in french we say "symetrical" instead, and that's super-confusing 😂
