Dude, you're a life saver! I'm a new asmrtist and I've been hitting my head on my table thinking I spent hundreds of dollars on a wrong mixer with no usb connector. You saved me man, seriously.
You're an awesome human being for doing this as clearly and simply as possible. I'm switching over from using a USB mic to an analog mixer --> PC setup and your video literally walked me step by step. Thanks again man.
Thank you, I just bought this mixer today and needed to connect it to my PC to improve my live stream audio and your description of how to do it has worked perfectly :-)
I can't tell you how much this helped me i always thought having the gain cranked up so high and the volume in windows down so much was wrong you changed my life !!!! thank you
Thanks Matthew, I have a Mackie 402-VLZ3 mixer and I've been trying to figure out how to connect it to my computer. I did download the manual, but it had so much technical jargon, it made me doze off. I just wanted plain and simple English and you did so. I'm good to go now.
Mannn. Thank you, sooooo much for doing this video. I've been having so many problems trying to figure out why I wasn't getting an audio signal from my "Tape Outs". Your video helped me figure out that I needed to plug into the Blue "Line in" on the back of my P.C. I was using the Microphone in, and It wasn't working. And, so many of these other videos failed to explain this; which is asinine to me, seeing as we live in a computer age. Not to mention that they are long winded and repeat themselves too much. You're a good teacher. I wish I could pay you to come to my studio. Thanks. Your knowledge has been invaluable!!!
some video may well be years old but are very useful for folks want to know how to set these devices up Thank you for sharing and keeping these videos up.
So glad I saw this.. I had seen your breakdown of utilizing an interface as well, along with a mixer. I didn't want to have to buy an interface, though. I already have a small Mackie mixer, computer, obviously, and the cables. I'm so glad to know I don't have to spend any money... now to get recording. Thank you!!
Thanyou Mathew. Now I know how to connect mixer into the laptop. have been having trouble connecting and was confused which lines to use. You helped alot.
Thank you for the simple but excellent demonstration on Mic > Mixer > Computer connection. Though I am a newbie to audio stuff, your demo is clearly show how to do it step by step.
Good job. This is all I'm using to make music right now. This would have come in handy but I figured it out on my own. It amazing how much you can do with some basic hardware and one piece of software. I'm a bit in the dark without proper monitors but I'll get those soon.
WOOW, Im So Happy That I Just Found This Video, So Detailed And You Explained Everything And Now I Will be ABle To Make My Mixer Work For Once. Thank You Very Much, You Just Got A New Subscriber Man. Greetings From Latvia :) Have A Beautiful And Loud Day
That was some fantastic info on how to setup the mixer to the computer....I'm sure it's the same setup on a laptop using windows 10 I hope lol....thanks for sharing this to us....🤘🎶🤘
thanks soo much man. i wanna be a pc technician and coder when im older and playing the piano recorded by a camera but with a mixer and stuff like that so people can hear me properly.
My name is Alex am really so grateful about the video you make about connecting audio interface to mixer how I don't know how to connect an audio interface in logic pro settings
Great video. I've watched a good few and this is the first one that made sense. A lot of other videos don't go into the laptop(pc) speaker settings which actually make a huge difference to how things sound and to sometimes getting sound full stop. Thanks.
I use to have mines set up the same way till my computer did a update and everything got screwed up I’m going to try what you showed on this video I had forgot the set up with the line in plus settings in computer but I see you mention it here thanks
Hi Matthew, saw this video as i was looking for tutorial on how to connect Mixer to PC, the question i have is how to OUT it on a speaker when your doing it to a live audience.
Thanks a lot for the tips about mixer (Mine is a xenix 1202FX). I've a mac no so complicated settings but it works very well. So I can use my mic without audio interface. :).
Im planning to have this mixer and hopefully I can record my own music..thanks for this tutorial maybe soon I can mannage to set up if I have those..thanks again
you helped me alot with this tutorial man. the thing that confused me was some people using the first method and some using the other method. thanks for clearing things up!
acutally an update here with a question. did everything as shown in the video. connected the red and white cable to my pc with a 3.5mm jack and my pc sees and hears the mic but the sound is horrible. the mic and mixer are both expensive so im confused. i am very low on volume so to hear myself i have to max out gain and volume level wich makes the audio very bad quality. there is also a loud buzz. can you help me?
What AMS-CSGO said. Are you using a dynamic microphone? If you are using a condenser microphone make sure that you have the 48v phantom power on if that is what it calls for. Is the volume of the mic low when you use the mixer by itself? Like if you use headphones with the mixer? Need a bit more information to answer your question properly.
@@MatthewStratton i fixed the problem a few days ago. I was using an xlr to xlr cable wich was the problem. When i switched to a xlr-6.35mm jack cable it sounds perfect. I still dont know why and how that fixed it maybe the xlr to xlr cable was broken i dont know but it worked hahah. Thanks for the response anyway! The video did help alot with the ac cable setup. Have a good one!
@@MatthewStratton Yes thank you. hey, any idea how we can connect our pioneer dj controller, if we can at all, to audacity or another mixing program? we wanna make good use of ours.. we spent a lot on our dj equipment and due to covid.. its just sitting there.. i wanna record some piano music.. and help my friend mix her rap..
this connection is smart but you forgot about latency. Latency is the bigest in this way. Connection with the focusrite is much better but not cheaper. Anyway good video.
Thanks man!! that helped me a lot! I use my YAMAHA MG166CX as a mixer to plug into my pc using the RCA - P2 cable. but when I open the GUITAR RIG app theres that noise coming out of the speaker even tho when I set to listen to my line in device on my pc the sound is clear..cant find a way to fix it :(
Great Video! Unlike the ones that gave me headache for not using camera stand. Question though, if I can plug in my mixer to a computer directly, would I still need USB interface to record guitar insturments or mic audio? I was able to do it and sound is still fine.
Thank you for great videos. I have a request please 🙏🏻. Can you make a video that you are using your digital mixer to mixdown your project through your DAW? Please and explain how you connected or paired your mixer to your daw mixer to control your workflow please. Thank you
Just on levels, in analogue audio, 0 VU (Volume Unit) is about where the analogue signal level needs to be for saturation without clipping. VU metering was designed to provide a level to aim for when setting signal gain. So 0 VU is the industry standard signal level and keeping an audio signal at that level throughout an audio system ensures optimal S/N performance for that system. There are different scales though so here is an equivalence: - VU = +4 dBu = +1.782 dBv = 1.228 V rms = 3.472 V P-P = -18 dBfs dBfs is the scale that all DAW programs use for digital audio where 0 dBfs is Full Signal, meaning the signal is clipping. Digital clipping is very bad, much worse that analogue clipping. So, avoid 0 dBfs at all costs. This is why -18 dBds is pretty much the industry standard digital target level for digital recording. Every +10 dB in any of the dB scales is perceived as twice as loud. I just wanted to say that because it's annoying when RUclips videos have either excessively low or high audio levels.
Thanks for a good video you reminded me about the sound card inputs around the back of the computer I had forgotten they exist I always use the headphones and mic inputs on the front. Unfortunately most laptops do not have line in/out etc and some only have a single shared socket for headphone and mic.
hey! ive been learning more about this stuff also. I found out for laptops you still can do it, but you will need a TRRS cable that separates the mic and audio connections. because i was planning on switching between a second computer(laptop) and my cellphone to take calls. I decided to get something like the iRig 2, which makes it safe to connect your phone to the mixer for input. they are pretty affordable and also work on my laptop!
@@MatthewStratton if you haven’t done a video on the “ground loop isolator” you should ! I had a hum and had to search RUclips to fix my ground loop and that product fixed it! It would probably get a lot of views!
Good plan to get some ground loop buzzing in your recording. Always use a ground loop isolator between computer and mixer. Computers are notoriously bad for ground loop buzzing.

Hello there, nice video. I have a focusrite scarlett 18i20 and I have it connected to my main desktop computer via usb c to usb a. But now I want to be able to make a connection for when I collaborate with another music producer and he or she brings her laptop to playback a project. I would then have to connect a cable from the laptops headphone jack to one of the available inputs of my scarlett interface, right?
If you're just trying to record the raw live sound from a mixer for something like a church service or a house party, this will do just fine. If you're wanting something for more "home studio" style recording and want to mix your stuff, you'd want an audio interface by that point. But if you just want a recording what is happening live on a mixing board, plugging straight into the computer isn't a big deal, just make sure you are using the mixer for your speakers and not the computer, as that's when latency would become an issue.
If you want to record in higher sample rates than 48 kHz, like 96 kHz or 192 kHz, you'll need an audio interface that can do that. Otherwise, if you plug it straight into the line-in jack on your computer's on-board sound card, or use the USB on the mixer, the quality will be 48 kHz, because that is what the ADC (analog-digital converter) in your computer's sound card as well as in the mixer is capable of. Whether or not 48 kHz is enough or you need 96 kHz or 192 kHz is another discussion, and there are videos out there that talk about that, and there are sample audio out there that allow you to hear the difference. Usually 48 kHz is enough for most people, but if you want the highest of quality, more is desired.
